City Cast Portland captures the one-of-a-kind creative spirit of this place and tackles who we are and where we’re going — from big deals, like equity and livability, to tiny delights, like the city's most wonderful doughnut. Our home is teeming with creativity and controversy, natural beauty and impossibly good food and drink.
Host Claudia Meza is so over the notion that ‘Portland is over.’ On the show, she’ll revive your civic pride and stir you to help create local change — through conversations with neighbors, newsmakers, artists and entrepreneurs about our ever-changing city.

Why East Portland Is Built Different — Literally
Thursday, October 3, 2024 • Duration 28:46
If you spend any time in East Portland, you might notice how the region lacks the parks and sidewalks common in the rest of our city. The lack of city infrastructure is mirrored by the fact that East Portland residents also feel perennially underrepresented by city government — but that’s about to change. Today we’re talking with one of the city’s East Portland experts: Randy Leonard. He’s a former state legislator and Portland commissioner who first moved to East Portland in the ’80’s. Leonard is here to talk about the history of that area, the politics that led to its lack of infrastructure, and how those issues might factor into the coming election.

Have we reached a tipping point with tipping? Today, we’re asking: what are the new rules of tipping? Helping host Claudia Meza find the answer are City Cast director of digital strategy Bryan Vance, our very own producer, Giulia Fiaoni, and you — our readers and listeners.

The Portland Doctors Earning Less than an Average High School Grad
Tuesday, September 24, 2024 • Duration 25:05
Until recently, Portland was home to two of the country’s most prestigious alternative medical schools. But they’ve been on the radar of consumer-protection watchdogs, because students routinely take on hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, but then earn a sliver of what they’d need to pay back those loans upon graduation. OPB higher education reporter Tiffany Camhi talks about the financial challenges facing these graduates, why some are accusing the schools of predatory behavior, and what it says about the state of naturopathic medicine.
Mentioned in this episode:
With Deep Debt and Low-Paying Jobs, Portland Alternative Medicine Graduates Say Their Degrees Will Never Pay Off [OPB]
Oregon Alternative Medicine Students Face a Long Road to Loan Forgiveness [OPB]
