Episode 214: CAT CHASER (89), NIGHT EYES (90) W/ EVAN VELLELA08 Apr 202601:39:20

CUE THE SEXY SAXAMAPHONE, CINEPUNX IS BACK WITH THEIR OLD FRIEND EVAN VELLELA TO TALK ABOUT SOME DANG EROTIC THRILLERS!
It is good to be back. Apologies again for the delay but Josh is a wild man and I was supporting my pastor wife getting ready for the Easter festivities and just life, yah know? Anyway, love you all, and so excited to be back with you, joined by my Ghoul Summer co-host Evan Vellela to discuss two erotic thriller of his choosing: Cat Chaser and Night Eyes.   We are so grateful Evan was able to join us and, spoiler, I really enjoyed one of these movies.

Look, even if I didn’t love both of these films, it was cool to finally dip out toe into the erotic thriller world and we do discuss some other movies I am hoping to catch up with soon. We also do our usual gimmick of Wack and on Track, and I am not sure anything some up we need to link to but off mic Josh did mention he was playing this PLOW UNITED GIG IN SEPTEMBER, I dunno if it is sold out or not so go check and maybe get a ticket off the dark web. Hey, have you thought about supporting our patreon? I would love it if you did!

Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.

Episode 213: RAD & GLEAMING THE CUBE w/ Reject25 Feb 202601:51:25

I know, I know, you are asking your podcast player of choice out loud, right now, “WHY IS CHRIS REJECT BACK?”

Well, it is simply because we love him. Also, LVAC is having some cool sales right now, so get some stuff printed, will yah??

On this extreme sport filled episode, Reject joins us to discuss two tubular films, Rad and Gleaming the Cube.

Look, as much as we like to bust on Chris, the reality is he is a great dude who does great work, and you should make him feel cool by checking out LVAC, or DRYROTT, or SQUARE OF OPPOSITION, or whatever.

It was actually pretty fun to talk to Chris again; even if he is a giant asshat, he is also pretty great. Kinda. On this episode, we do our usual Wack and On Track and we spend a bit more time discussing the ways DHS is being used to terrorize innocent people. I want to link to a charity, or a community organization, or an ICE WATCH group, but you should probably find a local one to you. I know things are hard right now; do not give up, we can do this together. Like I said, patronize any one of Chris’s scams — I mean, businesses — and let him know we sent yah so he stops harassing us all the time. Thanks friends, love you.

Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.

CINEPUNX Episode 115: KILLER WORKOUT and DROP, DEAD, GORGEOUS with Justin Nordell09 Jul 202001:57:30

OH OUR DEAR, DEAR FRIENDS, GREETINGS AND BLESSINGS UPON YOU FOR RETURNING TO THIS, THE ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEENTH EPISODE OF THE WORLDS MOST JIM JAMMY PODCAST, CINEPUNX!

Your two brown heroes are joined by the amazing Executive Director of the Philadelphia Folksong Society, Justin Nordell!!

We first met Justin when he was the only friendly person who worked for the Philadelphia Film Society (from PFS to PFS is kinda ridiculous btw) back around 2010-2011 and we have tried to keep up with him ever since. Just the best!

Justin chose two truly ridiculous films for us to discuss, Killer Workout and Drop, Dead, Gorgeous

Justin is the best and he does a stellar job with the Philadelphia Folk Festival which is entirely online this year. Check it out here!

You can also find the man on twitter here

Thanks so much to him for being on the show, and thanks to YOU for listening and for your support!

Please tell a friend, rate review and subscribe, and maybe hit us up on socials to let us know you enjoyed the episode or hated it. whichever

Ok love y’all, stay safe

CINEPUNX Episode 114: Z and THE PARALLAX VIEW aka: The Paranoia Episode23 Jun 202001:33:28

FRIENDS FAMILY COMRADES

We are so blessed that you have decided to join us for yet another episode of Cinepunx, the premiere podcast about films featuring brown punx of questionable pedigree. On this amazing episode we cover to political thrillers focused on paranoia and conspiracy

THE PARALLAX VIEW and Z

We hope you had time to check these films out before listening as we freely spoil them, though in case you were ignorant like me, is based off a true story in Greece so a little lesson in Greek history could easily spoil that film for you. Still, the destination is not the point, but the journey, and we hope you will join us on this one!

Of course we do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick though there is simply not that much going on to discuss. Still some cool stuff.

We hope you are out in the streets making your voice heard if you can, or online if you can’t, but whatever you are doing be sure to also stay safe and take care of each other. You can’t change the world if you do not care for yourself too.

On a selfish note, please tell a friend about the show. We can only grow if you share us with your friends. Much love

CINEPUNX Episode 113: SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL and EXTRACTION Feat. Andrew Wellbrock09 Jun 202001:33:49

HEY THERE STREET WARRIORS, WELCOME BACK TO A NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!

Big apologies for the delay in release of this episode friends, but this will be no surprise to you that we recorded this episode prior to the the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent uprisings across the country. So, even though the episode was edited and finished in a bout a week, the day it was ready was the day we all took to the street or to the internet in outrage. When I first decided to hold it, I figured the delay would be a few days at most. Unfortunately, each new day has brought new outrages as well as new triumphs obviously, but all of it felt too important to distract from by releasing this episode.

Not that the episode is bad, it is a great one. It just feels like a document from ANOTHER WORLD! This was created in a time when we all knew that the world was unjust and that the carceral state needed to be dismantled, we just had no idea the whole world was ready to have that conversation.

So here we are, recording with  A PUBLIC DEFENDER IN THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, and yet we never talk about this broken system which now it feels like we are ALL talking about.

It is a big bummer in retrospect, but oh well.

So here it is, a bit of a time capsule. I considered holding it even longer but eventually we wanna release new episodes so please forgive us for being in a world that it turns out was not so different but is also so different from now.

Ok so the episode is actually a lot of fun, and we have to give a big THANK YOU to Andrew for joining us. These movies were not great but they were fun to discuss and I am glad he suggested them. Andrew plays in CROSSED KEYS with Josh, so you know, check that out as usual.

Crossed keys has also partnered with Black Shirt Music to do a benefit shirt as well as some other great bands!

Probably a ton of other stuff we could link to right now but we will simply do these

CINEPUNX Episode 112: CLOSENESS (16) and BEANPOLE (19) or Streaming the Darkness19 May 202001:14:09

LOOK AT US DOING ANOTHER EPISODE IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME, WHAT THE HECK IS EVEN GOING ON?

Welcome to Episode 112 of Cinepunx, your favorite degenerate movie podcast! On this episode Josh chose two very depressing Russian films for us to discuss, though mostly they just bummed us out, 2016’s Closeness and 2019’s Beanpole both directed by the young Kantemir Balagov

This episode is a bit short because we found ourselves without a TON to say about these films, especially because we did not want to spoil Beanpole which you can still catch online streaming now on various platforms that support independent theaters.

We do of course do the WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and here is some of what we discussed

We’re Here

Cinepunx Episode 111: WAR (2019) with Robert Newsome of The Atomic Elbow07 May 202001:48:21

EPISODE 111 IS HERE FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE!!

We were so excited and blessed to discuss 2019’s Bollywood action spectacular, and homerotic nationalistic propoganda, WAR with the man Robert Newsome. Besides hosting a real life internet radio show, Robert is the creator and proprietor of THE ATOMIC ELBOW, the first wrestling zine I ever checked out.

This film is crazy and we definitely spoil it hard so I would recommend watching before you listen.

We had a ton of fun talking with Robert, go ahead and follow him on the gram!

There is, as always, a ton of things I could be linking too. Let me just go ahead and do the obvious jawns

CINEPUNX Episode 110: BACURAU and NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS ( or New On Streaming)21 Apr 202001:37:33

RING AROUND THE ROSEY, POCKET FULL OF POSEY, ASHES, ASHES, HERE IS A NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!

On this, our greatest pandemic episode TO DATE, we discuss two new films to streaming which you can watch right now and support independent theaters. BACURAU is a Brazilian film about a community harassed by rich monsters looking to hunt humans, and NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS is a contemplative and heart wrenching film about a girl and her cousin traveling to find access to abortion. Both films are amazing and touching, but really the only things they share is that you can check them out right now online

You can catch BACURAU here

and you can see NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS here

Otherwise we also cover our usual gimmicks, Josh discusses how hard this time is for him as a healthcare worker, we share what limited good things have enjoyed. I forgot to mention how happy I am that BROAD STREET BREAKDOWN is back.

Shout out to this record which I really like.

CINEPUNX Episode 109: BIG NIGHT & THE LEGEND OF 1900- Our Feel Good Episode09 Apr 202001:36:35

AHOY THERE!

I am sure I have used that one before, sorry y’all.

WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS CINEPUNX PODCASTING PRODUCTION!

On this episode Josh has decided to introduce us to two films he refers to as “Ivo Movies”, films he would watch with friend of the show Ivo Tomas again and again. This walk down cinema as comfort and nostalgia is, we hope, as distracting for you as it is for us! There is still a ton of talk about our current pandemic, so hopefully that does not bring you down too much.

Of course we engage in our usual gimmicks though to be sure, there is far more WACK to discuss than ON TRACK

Still, we manage to find the joy both in our time together and in the films Josh has chosen for us to discuss. If you haven’t seen them, we do engage in spoilers, so be forewarned.

Ok basically not much else to say then be safe, we love you, watch out for each other, and please even in this time check out the network and tell people about the show. Thanks and know we are thinking about you all.

CINEPUNX

CINEPUNX

CINEPUNX

HEY there weary traveler, come in and rest your bones to a brand new episode of Cinepunx! We are very likely the only brown, punk, film podcast in the world and if we are not, we challenge whoever you are to a dance off.

On this plague season episode we are paying tribute to the work of the incomprable Max von Sydow by discussing two films of his we were previously unfamiliar with: The Night Visitor & Three Days of the Condor!

Before that we discuss the insanity of our lives, our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick, and some other delights. Do us a favor, and tell a friend. No links cause I dunno what to link to. I will say we are doing a fundraiser over at

https://www.roughcutshirts.com/

To help folks during this tough time, we released Shivers and The Crazies designs. All proceeds go to charity.

Other then that all we can say is a giant THANK YOU for listening. Please stay safe, wash your hands, keep your distance, and do NOT GIVE UP HOPE!!

Do us a favor during these turbulent times, tell a friend about our show and all the shows on the network, and if you are one of the few people not financially wrecked right now, check out our patreon. Much love friends

HELLO FRIEND, SO GLAD YOU COULD JOIN US FOR ANOTHER SPECTACULAR ADVENTURE WITH CINEPUNX!

On this, our 107th episode we decided to spend some time with one of the greats of action cinema, JOHN WOO!

We talk about all of his movies and our history with them, but spend most of our time two of his later Hong Kong films before he broke through in the US, The Killer and Bullet in the Head.

We would love to say more, but that is about it. Some links of things we think you should care about

Cinepunx Episode 106: BULLITT (68), and THE CONVERSATION (74) or Liam Misses San Francisco12 Feb 202001:31:03

AND WE ARE BACK, THIS TIME WITH FLOWERS IN OUR HAIR, IT IS EPISODE 106 OF THE GREATEST FILM PODCAST TO EVER HAVE DONE OR DONE DID IT, CINEPUNX!!!!

Hi friends, thanks for joining us. I have returned from San Francisco ready to discuss films with my bestest of bestie Josh Alvarez, and he decided we should celebrate my recent trip by discussing two CLASSIC films based in the City on the Bay (?), The Conversation and Bullit!

We do not stop there though, no we do not! We do our usual Wack and On Track gimmick, talk about some recent films and shows we have enjoyed, and I personally spend more time then maybe is warranted discussing films I did NOT enjoy. Sorry y’all. Anyway, songs on this episode relate to San Francisco. Thanks to all of our Patreon Supporters, the homies at LVAC

and of course all of YOU for listening!

Cinepunx Episode 203: SINNERS (25) Or Talking About What Everyone is Talking About05 May 202501:16:54

HAPPY 11 YEARS TO US AND WELCOME TO OUR NEW EPISODE!

I am posting this on May 5th, the day AFTER our 11th birthday but it still counts. In this episode we do something we honestly almost never do, we discuss a movie a lot of people are currently discussing, even on this very podcast network. Look, this discussing current films thing, let alone films that are relevant to culture thing, is not a new trend for us. However, yet another new film has come out that we are both really passionate about so we figured let’s jump on that opportunity. This episode was edited in time for this to come out BEFORE May 4th and the ERO GURO zine release at PhilaMOCA but I didn’t have time to post it. My bad. However, let’s get into this SINNERS discussion.

Be forewarned, this is not a spoiler free discussion. We do avoid spoilers initially but it was too difficult to get at what we wanted without at least acknowledging the whole narrative. I think listening after seeing the movie is recommended. It is really great though so def go see it. Also, there are a bunch of things available over at ROUGH CUT FAN CLUB so go order stuff please. OK love you.

Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.

CINEPUNX Episode 105: 2019 YEAR IN REVIEW FEATURING JUSTIN LORE OF HORROR BUSINESS09 Jan 202002:02:14

HERE WE ARE AT THE END OF FUCKED UP YEAR, AND THERE IS ANOTHER ONE COMING!

Welcome one and all you our 2019 year end review, featuring our partner in crime and honored guest, one Mr. Justin Lore of our esteemed sister podcast, Horror Business! Justin joins us for a brief excursion through some of our favorite things from this past year in Film, Music, Tv, and Book form.

There is a lot to love from 2019 even as there is a lot that was hard and sad and tragic. Still, we have a lot of hope for 2020 despite the rough circumstances that have begun it.

Thank you to all our listeners, our amazing Patreon supporters, our sponsors at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations

A huge huge huge thank you to all the folks who contributed their time and talents to the Cinepunx Podcasting Group in 2019. Folks did art for us, guested on our shows, spread the word, attended our events, shared their podcasts with us, and wrote about the stuf they loved and hated. It was a hard year, but even in the darkest of years the light of those we love shines through. Thanks for being awesome. See you again real soon.

CINEPUNX Episode 104: ALMODOVAR! (PAIN & GLORY, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN)30 Dec 201901:27:17

Hola mi companeros, and welcome to a piping hot and sexy new episode of Cinepunx, this one featuring our very special surprise guest Dana Belletiere!

Dana is one of my oldest friends, and Josh is pretty sure he met her at a show in like 00 so like, that is a long time too.

Dana joined us as a surprise friend hang out, and so did not have much to add to our discussion of the films because she had never seen them. However, we will definitely have her on again as a regular guest to discuss something she loves and she promised me it will not be NOFX- Punk in Drublic.

On this episode we spent some time discussing two randomly chosen Pedro Almodovar films: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Pain & Glory. I say random but really I just wanted to discuss the new film, and I picked one of the few other Almodovar films I had seen and enjoyed. It should be obvious but in case it is not, we are not experts on this director nor do we pretend to be. However, I think we both felt this was a good first step into his films and we hope to do a follow up episode on more of his movies and having a little more knowledge of the scholarly work around his movies. Anyway, the episode was a lot of fun and so many many thanks to Dana for hanging out with us!

Hey as usual thanks to all our patreon supporters

Please tell folks about the show

CINEPUNX Episode 102: Ari Aster Double Feature w/ Dustin Johnson (HEREDITARY, MIDSOMMAR)30 Sep 201901:58:07

EPISODE 102 UP IN YOUR FACE! We decided to start the horror discussion off right away, or rather our illustrious guest DUSTIN JOHNSON did, and so here we are with an Ari Aster double feature of HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMAR! YAY!

You may remember Dustin from our 100th episode spectacular (if not go listen ASAP) AND you may know him from twitter where he is one of my favorite mutuals. Regardless, now you will know him as one of the best guests we have ever had. We discuss not only these two truly upsetting films, but our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick.

THUS DAWNS THE NEW ERA OF CINEPUNX, ALL TIME SHALL HENCE BE MARKED ANNO CINEPUNXI!

Oh, hi friends, we finally have Episode 101 for you. WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT!

We want to start with a HUGE thank you to all the awesome folks who participated in our HUNDREDTH episode, as well as those of you who shared it with your friends. It is one we pretty proud of and we are so thankful folks were willing to participate at all.

So the genesis of this new episode is pretty simple. If you listen back to our LADY SNOWBLOOD  episode you will hear us promise to cover more Meiko Kaji on future episodes. Well, we would love to say we conceived of this as a fitting follow up, but in reality we stumbled into it a little. Basically I was curious to do some Pinky Violence films, and only once we started researching options did we discover that two great choices featured the amazing Kaji and we remembered our promise.  So here we are.

We discuss a lot, and I mean A LOT of stuff before getting to the meat, but the only links I think need to be given are

CINEPUNX Episode 97: CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, also JOHN WICK/EX-FEST/NITRATE PICTURE SHOW20 May 201901:27:12

WELL, WHAT DO YOU KNOW? THE CINEPUNX ARE BACK, AND READY FOR TROUBLE!

This episode is jam packed with cinema action! First off, we decide to start a conversation we surely continue into the future about the films of Agnes Varda who recently passed away. Varda was an essential part of the French New Wave and continued to make films long after that movement ended, including some highly praised documentaries. She was largely unfamiliar to us when she passed, and we decided this was a pretty large gap in our film knowledge and expertise. Thus, we started with one of her best known films, currently available from Criterion, Cleo from 5 To 7!

That is not all though! We also have our world famous segment WACK AND ON TRACK!

During this we chat about JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM as well as Exhumed Films EX-FEST IV and The 5th Annual Nitrate Picture Show!

As always thanks to YOU for listening, to our Patreon supporters for being awesome, and to LVAC for being our official sponsor.

As always there is more to say but who has time? Please tell all your friends about us, post us on all the message boards, and let us know if you have feedback. We wanna interact! Find us on all social media platforms, CINEPUNX

Episode 96 is here, and for this truly blood boiling episode we welcome co-host of the Whine & Cheese podcast

and killer band sun god who you probably know, IF YOU ARE COOL! Mike had the great idea to talk about Joe Swanberg, whose films are seen as ground zero for mumble-core and whose tv work has been ground breaking of late.

I have been a pretty big Swanberg fan since I first saw him beat the crap out of Devin Faraci at Fantastic Fest, but I also have loved his movies for some time and his show Easy is super brilliant. Josh had never seen any of his films before, and so our conversation touched not just on these two important films but on who he is as a figure and how his work has impacted the perception of “mumble-core” films as an idea. I also tell the story of seeing him in the Fantastic Debates.

Anyway it was a very fun episode, I think we covered a lot of ground, and our wack and on track was pretty great except for when I cut Josh off by mistake before he could share his wack.

Here is the place where I should link to things we mentioned so you can find them but honestly I don’t have the patience. How about this, you listen to the episode, you write down everything worth linking to, you post it in our facebook group? sound good?

CINEPUNX Episode 202: FREAKY TALES (25)24 Apr 202501:06:34

CINEPUNX IS HERE TO ROCK IT! Oh, hey, it’s you and it’s us! Welcome to a new episode of CINEPUNX! Sometimes we get excited about a new movie and have to spend a whole episode gushing about it! Well we hope you like that cause not only did we do it this episode for FREAKY TALES, we did it for the next episode about SINNERS, so there is that. Hey, thanks for coming!

We do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and I am yet again on record gushing about anime like some sort of weirdo. Do I need to start a podcast about anime from an outsiders perspective? I dunno, but this obsession is actually weird.

Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.

CINEPUNX PHILLY BACK AGAIN, DOING A LITTLE EAST COAST SWING!

Hey friends, we have finally returned to you after far too long away to bring you another fantastic episode of your favorite semi-regular podcast, CINEPUNX!

On this episode Josh and I decided to talk about one of our favorite genre directors in the wake of his passing, Larry Cohen. We spend some time discussing which of his films we encountered first, what we love about his movies, and then get down to it with two specific films

That is right, we are talking 1973’s Black Caesar and 1976’s God Told Me To

We also spend time on our usual gimmicks, including WACK AND ON TRACK!

We have started adding content to our Patreon, for patrons only, so check that out.

HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER SICK ROUND OF CINEPUNX!

We hope you are as unbelievably excited as we are to bring this action packed episode! On this contentious installment we get INTO IT talking about French provocateur Gaspar Noe. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he a misunderstood artist, an annoying edge Lord, or a gimmick utilizing scammer or ALL OF THE ABOVE? Get ready for a ton of opinions and almost no answer here on our 94th episode!

We spend a chunk of time gushing about our awesome listeners and supporters, as well as asking you to come to and tell people about our film event on March 18th!

SOUND NOTES: Haven’t had to do this in awhile, but something went wrong with Josh’s sound on his side. So, while my sound is buttery smooth, Josh’s is a little rough. Honestly, you might not notice his is a little rough if not for the fact that mine turned out so seriously good. Anyway, it is listenable, and we will figure it out for our next episode. Honestly, I only make not of it so you all don’t feel obligated to let me know on Twitter. Thanks tho!

CINEPUNX Episode 93: HORROR NOIRE and BLACK WAX12 Feb 201901:18:36

AIN’T NO STOPPING WHAT CAN’T BE STOPPED, NO KILLING WHAT CAN’T BE KILLED, ESPECIALLY EPISODE 93 OF CINEPUNX!

We are so glad you have joined us for this spectacular and timely episode. Recently, both Josh and I were able to catch premiere screenings of the new amazing horror documentary Horror Noire and we both felt extremely compelled to cover it. The timing of the film could not be better, as February is both Black Heritage Month and Women in Horror Month, and this film is an exploration of the history of Black presence and representation in horror, and features the powerful voices of many women, including huge friend of the show Ashlee Blackwell We are so proud of her and our other friends involved in the project like Phile Nobile Jr and others! The movie is fantastic! To continue our discussion but moving unto another black produced, non-fiction film, we decided to cover the 1983 Gil Scott-Heron concert film Black Wax

As usual we also do our patented WACK AND ON TRACK feature, and as usual I should link to some jawns from that but nah, I am fine. Anyway, check out

CINEPUNX Episode 92: RUNAWAY TRAIN, FIREWALKER / That is, a Cannon Episode!04 Feb 201901:31:32

PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THE MIGHTY RETURN OF CINEPUNXXXXX, THE MOST POWERFUL PODCAST ON THE PLANET! BOW BEFORE THEM!!

Or not, whatever. ON this Episode 92 of Cinepunx your pals Josh and Liam start what will likely be a continuing journey into the sometimes awful and sometimes amazing films of The Cannon Films Group!

Of course, like man folks who discuss the company, the Punx are focusing on the 80s era when Cannon became a power house for releasing some of the most insane and ill conceived cinema on the planet, as well as some stone cold classics.

This episode we focus on RUNAWAY TRAIN (Classic) and FIREWALKER (Racist Garbage).

CINEPUNX Episode 91: A DANGEROUS PLACE, RAGE – A PM Entertainment Episode18 Jan 201901:49:03

Here it is, a groove, slightly transformed, just a little escape from the norm! That is, it is episode number 91 of Cinepunx! On this spectacular and totally on time episode we take a look at two films from the extensive catalog of PM Entertainment!

We have our good friend Rob Skvarla to thank for alerting us to the addition of these films to Amazon Prime! He is the best, go follow him. So we dive into two 90s action…classics? Well you will have to listen to find out what we thought, but suffice to say there was…varying quality between these two films.

As usual we have our world famous gimmick, WHACK AND ON TRACK! We discuss new films we have seen, Josh putting out new music, and all kinds of other jawns. Some important links

CINEPUNX Episode 89: LADY SNOWBLOOD For Our Winter-Spectacular24 Dec 201801:46:11

HERE IT IS, A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!

Yes, your favorite degenerates of the cinema are back with a WINTER SPECTACULAR episode! What could be more Yule-tide appropriate than both of the Lady Snowblood Films?? Well maybe a few things, but these at least have “snow” in the name!

Best to address the gorilla in the room right up front:

YES, THIS EPISODE HAS SOUND ISSUES! This was a recording issue, mine actually, and our intrepid editor tried valiantly to restore the sound to something tolerable, and while he did a great job, you will notice an issue. Apologies.

Alas, it is of no matter, because this episode is REALLY REALLY REALLY GREAT!! We go in pretty deep on Lady Snowblood and Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance.

Of course there are the usual gimmicks including our world famous WACK AND ON TRACK segment.

Please take a moment and check out my new t-shirt project, ROUGH/CUT

It would also be great if you could follow us on INSTAGRAM

CINEPUNX Episode 88: PARIS, TEXAS + IT’S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER: A Farewell to Film Struck06 Dec 201801:39:54

DON’T CALL IT A COME BACK, WE BEEN HERE FOR YEARS!

Oh look, you have come to join us for another magnificent episode of CINEPUNX, the only podcast discussing moshing and mise en scene on the ENTIRE internet. On this episode we have chosen two movies we each love that were available on the now shuttered streaming service Film Struck as way to say goodbye.  We also get into our patented WACK AND ON TRACK segment as well as share a little with with you and each other about how life has been recently. It is a lot of fun, with some tasteful pathos mixed in!

On this episode we take a pretty sentimental look at the streaming service that was Film Struck. Just after we recorded this episode, friend of the show Dr. Katherine Groo wrote this rather incendiary piece questioning the way folks were conflating the end of Film Struck with the death of all cinema. Most of the folks we love and revere online were pretty mad at this piece, but I think Katherine actually brings up some good points and has a solid argument about the nature of film preservation (TLDR: all film is temporary, we always only save our darlings and let the ones we don’t care about disappear, maybe future film makers should see other films anyway, not the supposed “canon”) and so I encourage reading her piece with a sense of genorosity and a willingness to see film as more than the products we love. I post here as a counter balance to our episode, because we just gush and gush and gush about Film Struck so it is worth noting that is not the only perspective out there.

On this episode we discuss Paris, Texas and It’s Always Fair Weather. Each film was new to one of us, so it makes for a fun discussion. Prior to that we spend some time discussing The House That Jack Built as well as some recent music we love and films we have seen. I should really link to jawns, but come on, google exists. Just google it. Our opening song is from Spiritual Cramp who was definitely on track pick from me, and our interlude music is Josh’s band Crossed Keys. We really do recommend some hot stuff so get on that y’all

On this soul shattering episode we explore or mixed but mostly positive feelings about 2018’s SUSPIRIA as well as the original!

After a funny, rousing, informative, and charming edition of this ground breaking segment, we then dive in head first with the SUSPIRIA discussion. Now look, we know this is controversial. A lot of people dislike the film, and we get into a small bit of that on the show. However, warning going in, for the most part we liked it a lot. So apologies if the fact that our taste does not align with your own fills you with a sense of angst, but also we don’t care. Just have fun friend.

CINEPUNX Episode 86: CHECKING IN, HANGIN OUT02 Oct 201801:29:09

WE HAVE RETURNED!! Welcome one and all to another ridiculous and wonderous episode of the good ole CINEPUNX!!

Friends, this is a bit of a strange episode. We had planned and prepared for a very specific topic for a very specific guest, and due to an emergency that guest had to cancel. It happens. So we could discuss that topic without them, we could cancel, or we could soldier forward and just shoot the proverbial shit. So that is what we did. We talked, we shared our WACK AND ON TRACK, and we got caught up. It is important to not we recorded this BEFORE CINE-WEEN, hence why this is a non-spooky episode.

Cinepunx Episode 201: The Horrors of Malformed Mean + Blind Beast w/ SAMM DEIGHAN25 Mar 202501:57:18

WE ARE BACK AND HERE TO EXPLORE THE DEPRAVED BOUNDARIES OF HUMAN FLESH AND IMAGINATION, IT IS A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!
It finally happened, after numerous requests for her to return, but we are blessed to be joined for the third time by our one and only SAMM DEIGHAN. Chances are you know Samm from her film writing and commentaries for folks like Criterion but I would hope you are as avid listener as I am to her incredible podcast on this very network, EROS + MASSACRE.  Whenever Samm joins us she likes to push our boundaries and ask something of us as film viewers and this episode was no different as she lined up two classic Ero Guro films for us to check out, The Horrors of Malformed Men and Blind Beast, both from 1969.

This was a really great conversation, and honestly it was a blessing just to catch up with a good friend. We loved talking about these movies and quite honestly without Samm leading us to them I am not sure when we would have given them a chance. Do me a favor and go pick up a copy of her new book, REVOLUTION IN 35MM and if you can check out some of her upcoming programming events, she picks incredible stuff and always has insights to share. This episode was chosen in conjunction with a collaboration between Samm and us over at ROUGH CUT FAN CLUB, so keep an eye out for that as well. THANKS SAMM FOR BEING A GREAT FRIEND AND AN INCREDIBLE FILM EXPERT!

Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.

CINEPUNX Episode 85: DRUGSTORE COWBOY/ MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO06 Sep 201801:48:52

HAIL AND WELL MET PUNKERS! We have returned for yet another uproarious episode of your favorite film and punk related podcast, CINEPUNX! On this magical episode, we begin a journey with a filmmaker who we are both largely unfamiliar with, Gus Van Sant! We spend some time discussing the films we know and the ones we don’t, but most of this episode we focus on two of his early films Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho!

Our opening song for this episode is the B-52s and our break song is the band Fucked Up! Check both of them out and thanks to them as well.

We reference a lot of things in WACK AND ON TRACK, and I am reminded yet again that we need a producer to make note of them and put helpful links here. I will link you Josh’s band Crossed Keys who have a bunch of shows coming up.

I spoke briefly about the film The Ranger and while I had gripes with it, it is still worth checking out.

I can’t remember what else, but if you have any questions or concerns, email us or maybe hit us on social media!

Thanks to LVAC for being our official sponsors, and bigger thanks you all of YOU who support us on Patreon. We are currently cooking up some exclusive content for y’all very soon.

CINEPUNX Episode 84: SCIENCE CRAZED & TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE featuring Isaac Williams08 Aug 201801:59:07

LOOK OUT, HERE COMES THE SHAMBLING HORROR KNOWN AS CINEPUNXXXXXXXXXX!!!

Hey friends, welcome back to another awesome episode of CINEPUNX! On this amazing installment, we were honored to host film maker, music aficionado, and charming neer-do-well Isaac Williams!

You may know Isaac from the horror film scene in Philadelphia, or perhaps you read our feature on him written by the man Nick Spacek!

Regardless, Isaac is great, and he brought us a topic we had not yet gotten to, MICRO BUDGET INSANITY! So we jumped into SCIENCE CRAZED and TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE!

I should probably add some more links here, but basically just go check out Isaac’s soundcloud page. Otherwise, everything we discuss in WACK AND ON TRACK is easily google ready. So google!

Huge thank you to everyone who has been supporting our SHAW BROTHERS screenings at Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema. The CRIPPLED AVENGERS shirts are up now for pre-order, so get on that.

As always we really appreciate the support. We may not be the biggest podcast or family of podcasts, but the folks who support us have been really amazing and we cannot wait to get y’all some of the new stuff we have been working on.

CINEPUNX IS HERE!

Hey friends, thanks for joining us for a new episode of Cinepunx! On this episode we begin what will hopefully be a returning journey into the films of Ingmar Bergman, with The Seventh Seal and Persona.

We are no Bergman scholars but we do our best to dive into these films. As always, we would love your input as to how we did, what could be better, and what resources we should check out for further conversations.

CINEPUNX Episode 81: 30 Years of Living Next to TOTORO: Reflections on Hayao Miyazaki21 May 201801:34:04

LIKE A GIANT SLAPSHOD HOUSE POWERED BY AN ANGRY FIRE DEMON, THE LATEST EPISODE OF CINEPUNX HAS COME CLAMORING INTO YOUR LIVE, AND IS ALSO VOICED BY BILLY CRYSTAL!

OK, that was a random pull. Hey friends, and welcome to a steaming hot take filled episode of CINEPUNX! On this illustrious return we dive in with one of animations greatest story tellers, Hayao Miyazaki. It is the 30th anniversary of the release of My Neighbor Totoro, one of Miyazaki’s most beloved films, and one Josh had not had the opportunity to see, so we decided to take this opportunity to pay respect to an amazing creator. Now, to be fair, our fandom of Ghibli in general and Miyazaki in particular does not reach the levels of devotion of some people. If your are a truly devoted Miyazaki-stan, chances are our discussion on this episode might seem a bit elementary. However, if you are only beginning your journey with this incredible film maker we think this would be a cool place to start.

Of course we spend some time discussing our recent loves and hates in our world famous WACK AND ON TRACK section. I should, as usual, link to everything we discussed but I forgot to take notes again. So, here are just a few relevant links.

We welcome all our Blue Blaze Irregulars and thank you for supporting us on another cinematic adventure across the dimensional waste lands. It has been QUITE SOME TIME since our last episode, but not as long as we have done in the past! On this wonderful installment we discuss one of our favorite films of all time, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!

Movie Rules.

Before that we discuss some of our favorite and least favorite recent experiences in our trademark WACK AND ON TRACK segment. There is a lot there, but one thing I wanted to highlight was how much we love past guest Ryan Prows film Lowlife which you CAN RENT RIGHT NOW SO RENT IT ALREADY!

Also Josh played a bunch of shows which quite a few of you made it out to, thanks for the support. After that, we jump into it around this ridiculous and amazing film.

CINEPUNX Episode 79: Director Ryan Prows (LOWLIFE) talks KING OF NEW YORK and BAD LIEUTENANT05 Apr 201801:57:36

WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO AN IMMEDIATE AND RIGHT NOW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!

On this amazing episode we talk to director Ryan Prows about his new film Lowlife as well as two classic New York films from Abel Ferrara, King of New York and Bad Lieutenant !

Ryan was in NYC for the WHAT THE FILM FEST where his movie screened (the awesome Adrianna Grober caught it there and will be reviewing it for this very site!) I managed to catch Lowlife at friend of the show, former guest Josh Goldbloom’s CINEPOCALYPSE FEST. After I saw it I basically could not shut up about it, and I was super excited to get to sit down and chat with Ryan.

Or lay down.

This film is Ryan’s feature length directorial debut, BUT SOME OF YOU WILL KNOW HIS NOW NOTORIOUS WORK ON THE CRIME SCENE VIDEO BELOW

On the episode Ryan talks a little about his experience in the Hardcore Punk scene in Atlanta, making the above video, as well as the process of making Lowlife. Then we get into it about two of MY favorite films, King of New York and Bad Lieutenant.

Turns out I am alone, in this room at least, with my love for King of New York. Regardless, Ryan was a stellar guest and I cannot implore you enough to go see his movie when it opens April 6th or to check it out on VOD.

The opening song is from the industrial group 3TEETH who, it turns out, features a member who is very good friends with Liam, hence their inclusion. The interlude music is RIXE who are playing Damaged City Fest this year and I am pretty sure I cannot go and I am super bummed on it.

Liam was a generous, fun, and patient guest. Our discussion is I hope fun and interesting for all of you. His film is now available for streaming everywhere, I think at a reduced rate, so you should check it out. Thanks to him for coming on and to you for listening and telling all of your friends

Thanks as always to LVAC for their support

CINEPUNX Episode 77: DARK CITY at 20 or LIAM TRIES TO ALIENATE OUR ENTIRE AUDIENCE07 Mar 201801:24:50

GREETINGS CINEMA-PUNKERS AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER DARK AND IMPOSING EPISODE!!!

On this, our triumphant return to the realm of podcasting we tackle Dark City,  a film from the director of  The Crow! YEAH!

OK LOOK, I need to immediately apologize to all of your. The first reason is that this episode is a bit low energy because I have been sick and exhausted lately, and so this was my general demeanor during the recording

Not exactly the dynamic presence you have come to love and expect!

Second, we recorded this before I had a chance to check out the response to our announcement that we were covering Dark City on social media.

I HAD NO IDEA THIS FILM WAS SO UNIVERSALLY LOVED AMONG OUR FANS AND FRIENDS AND MY TAKE ON IT IS GOING TO BUM YOU OUT!

I promise, I was not trying to have a hot take, and if I knew it was going to be so potentially controversial I would have been a bit more diplomatic about it. I had no idea it would basically be the outsider opinion. Apologies, still keep listening to our show please.

BUT DARK CITY HAS NOT AGED WELL FOR ME

CINEPUNX Episode 76: SUICIDE CLUB and 2LDK with Grace Kim and Evan Vellela22 Jan 201801:37:57

OH, HELLO THERE YOU FAIR CINEPUNX!

Liam here. Hey, how you doin? I am sick. So, you know, cut me some slack.

We have been talking about doing this “Asian Extreme Cinema” episode with our good dude Evan for quite some time. Finally got it done.

The same night we recorded, Grace Kim was in town. Grace has been there for this podcast, and specifically for Josh and I since day one. She is a super talented tailor. If you are doing a real ass movie or tv show, you should hire her. She has worked with Rihanna so come correct or else.

The music on this episode was chosen by Grace and Evan, so if you don’t like it, tell them. The first song is CARNIVORE and the second is FAT NUTS. Like I said, hit them up if you got a problem.

After we do our usual gimmick of “WACK AND ON TRACK”, and Grace shares what I think is a relatively insightful theory on the completely over the top hate of that band TURNSTILE, we dive into a discussion of two seminal films in the Asian Extreme explosion in this county, SUICIDE CLUB and 2LDK. I feel like we had a lot more to say about SUICIDE CLUB than we did about 2LDK but it was still a solid conversation.

Please tell your people about us. We don’t advertise yet, so the only way folks will know we exist is if you tell them.

CINEPUNX Episode 75: Max and Joey talk Norm Macdonald (DIRTY WORK and SCREWED)08 Jan 201801:52:31

LISTEN HERE YOU JAGS, WHAT WE GOT HERE IS ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!

On this year end conversation (which occurred in 2017 btw) we sat down with Joey Breeding and Max Davis to talk about some of our favorites from 2017 and to have a dive into the film work of Norm Macdonald.

You may know Joey from shows and the internet, and Max has been in some terrible bands and also wrote briefly for this very website !

Our front end on this episode is a little stacked, and not only with our PATENTED and TRADEMARKED exclusive feature, WACK AND ON TRACK!  Recently Cinepunx published a Year In Review, and since Max and Joey were both contributors to this list we took the opportunity to discuss some of their picks.

We then took a break and here I have to make a note about the music. Our opening track is the OMEGAS, a great band, and this was chosen by Joey Breeding. Our intermission music though was chosen by Max Davis, Seattle’s own cut rate Kev Hare, and it is THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES.

I hate Ska. I mean, the first SPECIALS record is great but otherwise I hate it.

After that painful musical interlude we discuss DIRTY WORK,  film I have great nostalgia for, perhaps too much as we discuss, and SCREWED, a film I am willing to bet no one who listens to this podcast even knows.

As always thanks for listening and please tell a friend

CINEPUNX Episode 74: Discussing FASCINATION (79) With Samm Deighan19 Dec 201701:56:48

WELCOME TO ANOTHER HAUNTING AND PHANTASMAGORICAL EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!!

On this amazing episode we spend some much needed time with WRITER, EDITOR, PODCASTER, FRIEND, AND RETURN GUEST SAMM DEIGHAN!!

Some places you can find Samm are

DIABOLIQUE

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS

and most importantly (ie: buy it)

LOST GIRLS: THE PHANTASMAGORICAL CINEMA OF JEAN ROLLIN

On this episode we discuss the work of Jean Rollin, much misunderstood French director, with a special focus on his classic film FASCINATION. Do we solve the puzzles of his mysterious cinematic style? Not so much, but we have a fun and engaging conversation that I think you will find worth your time. The music is BATHORY, and then a song from THE SHIVER OF THE VAMPIRES

Ok, now here is the hard part:

WE NEED YOU TO SHARE THIS EPISODE, AND EVERY EPISODE FOR THAT MATTER, WITH YOUR GOOF BALL FRIENDS!
Look, a lot of folks work on this website and the website will be better when we can pay those people. It is only right. In order to do that we need lots of folks downloading the show, rating and reviewing us, especially subscribing on iTunes, following our social media, and maybe even supporting us on Patreon. You are an important part of that, and even when you just post about us on the nets, it helps.

Thanks y’all, you great!

CINEPUNX Episode 73: Taking a GIRLS TRIP with Tony Rettman12 Dec 201701:51:10

THEM PUNX ARE BACK IN TOWN!!

This is a very SPECIAL EPISODE of Cinepunx, and by “special” we mean incomplete. NOT BECAUSE OUR GUEST, TONY RETTMAN, AUTHOR AND PUNK EXPERT IS NOT AMAZING! Dude rules. No, it is ’cause our beloved Joshua Alavarez could not join us.

DO NOT FRET! Friend of the show, booker, artist, and MAN ABOUT TOWN, Evan Vellela, was available to stand in. Granted, I talk a LOT so I did most of the talking, but it was still cool. Hey, we forgot to take pictures so here are some older pictures with Tony in them (Cover photo by Greg Pallante)

Tony is a writer whose last three books have chronicled specific aspects of the hardcore punk scene. His latest book, STRAIGHT EDGE: A CLEAR HEADED HARDCORE PUNK HISTORY, is the first expansive oral history of the movement. Tony has previously written NYHC: NEW YORK HARDCORE 1980-1990 and Why Be Something That You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985

He also previously appeared on episode 49 of THIS VERY PODCAST!!

Tony decided we would discuss 2017’s Girls Trip, a movie I fucking loved, so glad for that. We also spent a good deal of time discussing his new book and his process.
