Mastering the Dance of Camera & Actor w/ Camera Operator Colin MacDonnell13 Feb 202400:47:47

Ever wondered how the dance between actor and camera is choreographed to capture? We sit down with camera operator, Colin MacDonnell, as we traverse the landscape of filmmaking, we talk about the bridge between technical and creative.

The episode is filled with anecdotes spanning from the nerve-wracking jitters of newcomers to the commanding presence of industry veterans.

Colin's journey from Massachusetts to California and his ascent in the world of cinematography is nothing short of inspiring. His stories illuminate the intricate scheduling, the trust that threads through a film crew, and the profound impact of a respectful, united set on the storytelling process. Whether you're a film aficionado or a curious listener, the merge of creativity and technical skill discussed here will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the craft.

We touch on how actors like Taron Egerton sync with the crew in a 'flow state,' and the challenges and triumphs of communication that define a film set's atmosphere. From the raw grind of career progression in the industry to the grace of a perfectly timed camera move, the stories shared here encapsulate the essence of movie-making — a testament to the collective endeavor of bringing stories to life. Join us for a journey through the lens of a Steadicam and into the core of cinematic storytelling.

049 Navigating the Harsh Landscape of Netflix's "Society of the Snow" with Cinematographer Pedro Luque02 Feb 202400:53:24

Embark on a remarkable exploration of the filmmaking process with Pedro Luque, cinematographer of the gripping Netflix film "Society of the Snow," who unveils the extraordinary lengths taken to capture the story's authenticity. Venture into the unforgiving landscape where the cast and crew faced formidable conditions to pay homage to the Andes plane crash survivors. These efforts culminated in a work that not only drew audiences deeply into the narrative but left a profound, stirring impact on the survivors themselves.

This episode peels back the curtain on the collaborative dance between actor, director, and cinematographer, as Pedro shares his perspective on guiding performances to resonate through the camera's lens. The discussion illuminates how the nuances of multiple character framing and the delicate interplay of planned and spontaneous moments form the heartbeat of visual storytelling. It's a fascinating look at the technical and artistic facets of cinematography that breathe life into the tales we see on screen.

Join us for a rare glimpse into the demanding and meticulously orchestrated creation of a realistic avalanche scene, balancing the raw power of practical effects with the seamless integration of CGI. The episode also touches on the personal and cultural connections that come into play when promoting a film that reflects one's heritage, adding layers of depth and humor to the profession. Pedro's dedication to his craft is a testament to the passion that fuels the world of filmmaking, and we're honored to share his insights with our community.

Emil worked with a consultant for authentic movement and blocking.

Kieran shot handheld in certain environments and they were awarded a grant from Panavision for winning HollyShorts with another film in 2020. The choice of handheld made the world more accessible & told a specific visual language.

HollyShorts LIVE: Low Budget in New Mexico w/ Eugen Merher (writer/director) & Alexander Wolf David (composer) of “The Boy Who Couldn’t Feel Pain”11 Aug 202300:11:17

We are live, on-location at the TCL Chinese Theatre for the 19th annual Oscar Qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival, as the official podcast partner. These shorter, special episodes are with selected filmmakers.

In this episode Hae sits down with Eugen Merher (writer/director) & Alexander Wolf David (composer) of the film “The Boy Who Couldn’t Feel Pain” which was nominated for a Student Academy Award last year 2022.

Logline:  ‘The Boy Who Couldn't Feel Pain’ is set in Grants, New Mexico and tells the fictional small-town legend of Chester, a street fighter who can't feel any pain. When Annie, a bowling alley employee who just moved into town challenges him for a fight, things begin to change.

Eugen discusses his self-made stabilization arm attached to a pickup truck (a poor man’s Ukrainian arm) for some running shots. How did they work with talent with this set-up? The actor had to run for about 8 hours, stop & go.

As a film school project, the New Mexico market was accommodating to their low budget.

Alex Wolf David, Composer had to create a sound of “legend” and “awkwardness” for the character. Alex improvises musically and Eugen would listen to what feels right.

They also found a local instrument made of a cigar box to give the appropriate sounds.

Their 4:3 aspect ratio was a choice driven by the simple and small world story of the main character.

HollyShorts LIVE: Knowing When to Cut Camera w/ Elisa Gambino (Director), Dave Liu (Exec Producer), Neal Broffman (DP) of “Every Day After” 11 Aug 202300:12:30

We are live, on-location at the TCL Chinese Theatre for the 19th annual Oscar Qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival, as the official podcast partner. These shorter, special episodes are with selected filmmakers.

In this special HollyShorts Live Podcast Inde sits down with:

Elisa Gambino (Director)

Dave Liu (Executive Producer)

Neal Broffman (Cinematographer/Editor)

To talk about their documentary “Every Day After”

Logline: The older sister of a neglected adolescent boy faces her own fears so her brother can heal and experience the everyday joys and struggles of growing up.

They talk about what cameras were used in order to capture moments of the family in a contained space and their daily lives.  How does Elisa direct without “directing”? She built a relationship with the family before filming so Neal (DP) could be very close as they lived their day-to-day lives.

Every Day After is a 35-minute black & white documentary that provides a more nuanced look at the complexities of the healing process we don’t often see. And honors the invisible labor of a sister whose love and action make it possible for Jary to experience the everyday joys and struggles of growing up.
