#69: "Materialists" Takes On Modern Dating 18 Jun 202501:16:57

Celine Song's follow-up to her beloved "Past Lives" stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in a rom-com about the commodification of modern love, "Materialists." The film had a lot of promise, especially considering who was cast, but it falls short of packing a real punch. In this weeks episode, your host Elise Hernke breaks down what didn't work, but also dissects some of interesting themes that the film presents.

Elise Hernke, your host, breaks down the third season of White Lotus, a favorite show & the top talk of the moment, thanks to it's elongated release and surprising storytelling by Mike White. The thesis of this deep-dive is to reflect on the ways that his writing style mimics themes of Greek tragedy and Shakespearean irony.

This week your host Elise Hernke breaks down one of her favorite movies, the George Cukor classic "The Philadelphia Story" starring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart -- after getting to see it on film at the New Beverly this past week.

We're back! On this weeks episode of Cinematic Breadcrumbs, Elise Hernke returns to the pod with hopes of more consistently releasing episodes from here on out, to talk about "Gattaca."

Currently streaming on Hulu & Criterion, "Gattaca" is a 1997 sci-fi thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. It takes place in a "not so distant future" dystopian society where predetermined gene modification becomes the status quo and those who do not partake are forcibly left behind. In this episode, we discuss some current talking points like the rise of pro-natalism happening in the tech community, how AI is being used in the film world and what was happening in the 90's to lead to a movie like this.

This week your host Elise Hernke makes a case for the movie "Opus" (2025) directed by former GQ editor Mark Anthony Green, starring Ayo Edibiri, John Malcovich, Murray Bartlett and Juliette Lewis. This week is a double wammy to finish off the Midcentury Macabre spooky movie series (yes, it lasted through Thanksgiving, but I never want spooky season to end!!!). We also talk about that adaptation, a 2011 film starring Antonio Banderas called "The Skin I Live In" which also credits the novel "Tarantula" by Thierry Jonquet.

#33: Sweaty Summer Series | DOUBLE FEATURE "La Piscine" (1969) & "A Bigger Splash" (2015)03 Aug 202201:38:24

This week we dive into the movie "A Bigger Splash" (2015) a remake, and the film its based on on, the 1969 French film "La Piscine" AKA "The Swimming Pool" (which was also filmed entirely in English as well). "A Bigger Splash" was made by CMBYN's Luca Guadagnino and stars Tilda Swinton,  Matthias Schoenaerts, Dakota Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. The 1969 original stars Romy Schneider, Alain Dolan, Maurice Ronet and freaking baby JANE BIRKIN.

These movies are amazing and actually were the inspiration behind this entire aspirational summer series, but they also leave a lot of room for discussion. SO MANY QUESTIONS. I attempt to deep-dive into all the different aspects of the films side by side to try to understand each character in their varied forms - Marianne, Jean-Paul (or Paul), Harry and Penelope.

#32: Sweaty Summer Series | "Overboard" (1987) Wayne Finkelman: Costume Extraordinaire20 Jul 202201:05:11

Venturing further into the sunkissed, sundrenched sweltering sizzling summer series with one of my personal favorites, "Overboard" - the original 1987 cult classic directed by Garry Marshall led by long time Hollywood couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

This film is a fun watch, but also I wanted to highlight the career and life of Wayne A. Finkelman - the incredibly brilliant costume designer behind this film and several others, who passed away far too young in 1994. The Hollywood Heritage Museum curated an exhibit in honor of him and his work in this film in partnership with the Western Costume Co. who dedicated their research library to him. This week we dive into "Under The Silver Lake" (2018) directed by David Robert Mitchell  that takes place in your host Elise Hernke's new neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. This film, starring Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough, is heavy on the references and symbolism - a labyrinth of clues, but where do they lead? #27: "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" (2022) & Nicolas Cage: A Beginners Deep Dive12 May 202201:10:37

This week we breakdown the life and times of the enigmatic legend Nicolas Cage and take a look at his new movie "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" (2022) - a very meta comedy with a somewhat undefinable genre where Cage plays himself. I also talk about the Met Gala & the terrible ABBA dance party I attended.

Now seemed as good a time as any for your host to finally go down the Internet rabbit hole of Nicolas Cage's life that can only be described as baffling. From his most extreme method acting moments ("Nouveau Shamanic") to his most ostentatious (bizarre) purchases, we look at what makes Nicolas Cage, well, Nicolas Cage, and why this movie would not work with anyone else.

#26: "THE BATMAN" (2022) w/ Special Guest Aaron Jacobi27 Apr 202201:29:20

On this week, I brought on my long-time friend Aaron Jacobi to break down the new Batman film, directed by Matt Reeves. We discuss the characters and directors storytelling choices in grave detail and also try to convince you that Cinematic Breadcrumbs should have a recurring series where Aaron joins and we just keep talking about Batman.

Specifically we take a look at The Riddler, The Penguin, Batman & Catwoman in all their various on-screen adaptations, the Batman universe origin stories, the tonal change from the 1980s Batman to now, and why this Batman is the most relevant for audiences right now.

#25: "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), Bon Iver, Heath Ledger & 10 Years Gone By13 Apr 202201:17:24

In this episode, I revisit one of my favorite indie darlings, "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), which lead me on a journey of finding crazy connections between this movie, my favorite artist (Justin Vernon/Bon Iver) and one of my favorite beloved actors, Heath Ledger.

The film directed by Derek Cianfrance, starring Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes, came out 10 years ago this year! Since then, the lead couple became a couple in real life and had children of their own, a documentary about Heath Ledger came out ("I Am Heath Ledger" released in 2017) and Justin Vernon celebrated the 10 year anniversary of his Grammy winning album, self-titled Bon Iver. So this episode is basically dedicated to celebrating those things.

#24: Oscars 2022 Special Episode (!!!)30 Mar 202200:49:02

In light of the most recent big movie event of the year, I decided to put together a "minisode" (that's honestly not even that mini) of my takes on this years Oscars ceremony - the 94th Academy Awards in all its glitz, glamour and gore???

Obviously, I give my thoughts like everyone else on the Will Smith / Chris Rock showdown, but I also wanted to bring focus to the other things overshadowed: the red carpet looks, the hosts and ceremony shticks, the wins & losses and the business of ratings and what they can do about it!

#21: "Parallel Mothers" (2021), Pedro Almodóvar and Penelope Cruz's "Don Quixote of Motherhood"23 Feb 202201:02:13

In this episode, I talk about the new Pedro Almodovar movie starring Penelope Cruz "Parallel Mothers," an Oscar nominated film that dives into motherhood, generational trauma, and  unique connections. I saw this at NYFF in fall 2021 with a Q&A, so I talk about some of the anecdotes from behind the scenes and my thoughts on the movie.

#65: The Perfect "Companion" (2025) 13 May 202500:57:34

"Companion" (2025) is "Barbarian" creator Drew Hancock's latest horror comedy treat. A perfect date night movie, it follows a girl who goes to a cabin weekend with her boyfriends friend group that goes horribly awry. Falling somewhere between 2011's "You're Next" and the masterful 2014 "Ex Machina," "Companion" explores gender politics, the ethics of technology and modern love.

I also talk Met Gala 2025 & what I've been reading lately.

#20: "The Power of the Dog" (2021), Westerns Done Right, Dusty Mean Benedict Cumberbatch & Collaborating Couples09 Feb 202201:06:20

In this weeks episode of Cinematic Breadcrumbs podcast, I look at the (newly!) Oscar nominated film "The Power of the Dog" directed by Jane Campion, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemmons.

I use this opportunity to breakdown not only this movie, but all my favorite westerns (a throwback to a series I did on ingloriousbaguettes.com in 2020). I also use this - and Valentines Day being around the corner - as an excuse to talk about real-life couples who share the screen - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

#19: "Licorice Pizza" (2021), Paul Thomas Anderson's 1970s California Cinematic Universe26 Jan 202200:58:47

This episode breaks down PTA's new vibey movie starring Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim (yes, of HAIM) which takes place in the San Fernando Valley in the 70s, and compares across other movies in this same cinematic universe: "Boogie Nights" (1999) + "Inherent Vice" (2014), as well as the non-PTA movie "The Nice Guys" (2016) - just cause!

With an ambiance of pure nostalgia, "Licorice Pizza" is full of things to talk about from its controversies to its cameos and what does the title even mean?

#18: "Last Night in Soho" (2021), Films Inspiring Nostalgia, Stylized Horror & Clever Camera Work12 Jan 202200:49:58

To kick off 2022, I am starting with the Swinging Sixties: a new release movie that stars Thomasin Mckenzie and Anya Taylor Joye and combines horror with swinging sixties nostalgia, "Last Night In Soho."

In this episode, I talk about some of the behind the scenes work that went into capturing some of the most memorable scenes (including a Harry Potter cameo!) and the iconic pink silk chiffon dress.

I also analyze the way that films influence us to do things like make a certain type of meal or change our hair, or how nothing sticks with us like a good horror movie - and hear from you guys about a time when a film made that kind of impact on you (thanks again to all who participated!!!).

The witches clip towards the end of the episode is from the show "Pen15" in case you were listening & dying to know.
