| Dutch (1991) - The Forgotten John Hughes Thanksgiving Classic - Episode 293 | 24 Nov 2023 | 01:28:44 | |
This week, we here in the states are celebrating Thanksgiving! The time honored tradition of gluttenous eating among family and friends, football (if you're into that sort of thing), and avoiding the inevitable clash of politics that comes when you invite your boomer Uncle Larry to dinner. But aside from food, there are a few movies we've come to associate with the holiday. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (see our back catalog) is one of the go to films to come from the mind of John Hughes. But did you know there is another Thanksgiving classic out there. Dutch, the 1991 family/dark comedy starring Ed O'Neil hot off the success of Married with Children and a super young Ethan Embry try to replicate the formula that Steve Martin and John Candy perfected but add a spin about the complexities of class and the struggle within a family dealing with divorce. Does this classic from yester-year hold up? We'll find out today! DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | What The Hell Did We Just Watch?!?! - Five Nights At Freddy's (2023) - Episode 292 | 12 Nov 2023 | 00:57:20
This week, we are answering a listener request! John and I are heading to Freddy Fazbear's Pizzareia to review Five Night's At Freddy's. A movie we both tried to avoid, but we love you the listeners so much that we can't turn down a request. So what is it about this demented knock off of Charles Entertainment Cheese that has captured the minds of little kids and teens and turned what was an indie game into a billion dollar enterprise with toys, books, onesies, and now a major motion picture? And what is the result of Freddy, Chica, Foxy, and the gang's move to the silver screen?? We'll strap in folks, cause this one is definitely a bumpy ride. DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | Deadly Friend (1986) with Special Effects Makeup Artist Sarah Schuck - Episode 286 | 03 Oct 2023 | 01:03:55
IT'S FINALLY SPOOKY SEASON!!! This week we are kicking off our favorite time of the year with the review of the wacky b movie, Deadly Friend from 1986 with our new friend, special effects makeup artist, Sarah Schuck! The film by Horror Maestro, Wes Craven serves as his pallet cleanser from the world of Freddy by giving us the world of B B the robot and an equally robotic Kristy Swanson in her first role. Known the world over for a very specific basketball-beheading meme, Deadly Friend is a weird anomaly that at one moment feels like an after school special about teen love then morphs into a 80's slasher complete with questions about what our lead character, Paul, did with BB the robot to make it so protective of him... Check Out Sarah's Amazing Work!

| Hackers (1995) - Movie Review - Episode 285 | 29 Sep 2023 | 01:13:19 | |
Do you remember 1995? We sure do! This week as we close out Dystopian, 90's, Sci-fi, Cyber Punk Month, we are revisiting what people thought teens would do with a Packard Bell PC that cost 2k from Circuit City in 1995....HACK THE PLANET! We're talking about of course Hackers starring Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie. A movie that we think has some kind of a message, but gets kinda muddled by things like 30 year old actors pretending to be teenagers, Jolt Cola, roller blades, and some pretty insane fashion choices. But is this movie as bad as some reviewers make it out to be or is it perhaps a cult classic that celebrates young people sticking it to the man....or in this case THE PLAGUE (aka Fisher Stevens). So get grab your sunglasses that you wear at night as we check out the "killer refresh rate" of Hackers! DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | Johnny Mnemonic (1995) - Episode 284 | 21 Sep 2023 | 01:16:07
This week, we are heading again to 1995 to review Johnny Mnemonic. A movie that feels a bit like a chipotle burrito, jam packed filled with brain implants, yakuza assassins, a global pandemic created by "technology", a cyborg dolphin, and yea....Henry Rollins is in it too. But is this movie really all that terrible? Are there any redeeming qualities to a film that has the pedigree of William Gibson's writing and the direction of artist Robert Longo? Well get ready to jack in as we tackle the world of cyber implants, VR Internet, and Johnny Mnemonic! DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | The Lawnmower Man (1992) - Movie Review | 19 Sep 2023 | 01:07:28
Continuing on with our 90's Cyber Punk Dystopian Future Month, we've got another cult classic from Virtuosity Director, Brett Leonard. It's the 1992 VR Thriller, The Lawnmower Man starring awesome character actor, Jeff Fahey and a not-quite-James Bond; Pierce Brosnon. This movie tried to show us the 2 true horrors of the 90's, 32 Bit VR games and DRUGS!!! Lawnmower Man tells the story of Jobe, a hapless lawnmower man who just wants to be smart enough to read the text boxes in the Cybo Man comic books he collects and to maybe kiss the town floozie, Marnie. It also tells the story of Dr. Angelo, a workaholic mad scientist who grieves the death of his science fair project Chimp and neglects his wife Caroline who just wants to go to "The City." Dr. Angelo finds a new science fair project in Jobe, where he uses VR and drugs to try and increase his intelligence....with terrifying results! DISCORD!!!

What happens when the big bad in a VR video game made up of 150 maniacs escapes to the real world "future" of 1999 as a nano bot blue goo android? You get the shoot e'em up chase movie, Virtuosity starring Denzel Washington and a pre-gladiator Russell Crowe (which this might actually be his best performance outside of the 2020 film "Unhinged"). Joining us in VR land this week are fellow movie podcasters, Joe La Scola and Sean O'Rourke of Movie Dumpster. We'll try to tackle the hard ethical questions in this movie such as how a Kevin J. O'Connor's "desires" are completely to blame for the plot of the movie. As well as why no one is paying attention to the fact that man literally is now a god in that they brought SID 6.7 to life with nothing more than blue goo. This week, we are joined by The Art Director for The upcoming Eerie Horror Fest, Monster Mark Kosobucki as we review one of George A. Romero's early classics, The Crazies. A movie that seriously has a totally different meaning in light of the past few years with the Covid-19 Pandemic, The Crazies is a tale of a small town in Western Pennsylvania that becomes infected by a bio weapon from the US Government and said government's attempt to quite it down to keep order. This movie takes jabs at a government that at the time was in the midst of a crisis of credibility due to the Vietnam War, the fight for Civil Rights, and the growing news of corruption within the Nixon White House. | Very Bad Things (1998) - Really That Awful? - Episode 279 | 18 Aug 2023 | 01:06:28
This week, we are returning to our well of dark comedies and misunderstood misfit movies to analyze one of the darkest comedies to come out of the "edgy" and "extreme" 1990's- Very Bad Things. A movie that plays to the trope of a bachelor party gone horribly horribly wrong and illustrates the lengths that people will go to avoid consequences. Starring Daniel Stern of Home Alone fame, future Iron Man Director and Star Wars Savior John Favreau, and a very sinister Christian Slater, this movie was deridded by critics during it's original run, but is it really that awful? | The Flash (2023) - WHY IT FAILED - Episode 274 | 03 Jul 2023 | 01:35:10
Gather round, superhero fanatics! Ever thought about the cost of producing a blockbuster like "The Flash" and the lack of substantial return on investment? We pull back the curtains on the economics of superhero movies in a lively discussion that ranges from the controversy surrounding Ezra Miller to the quality of VFX in this DC production. We've got a lot to unpack here, including our candid reactions to the film, the plot holes, and the impact of Michael Keaton's return to his Batman role. Are the glowing reviews of "The Flash" genuine or influenced by Warner Brothers' pressure? Hold onto your seats as we shake things up, raising insightful questions about the complicated relationship between movie execs, filmmakers, and fans. We chew over the balance of comedy and drama in the film, distinguishing between the scenes that strike the right note and the cringe comedy moments. We also dig into the implication of VFX houses' economics on the quality of VFX in superhero movies and put the controversial actor Ezra Miller under the microscope. Finally, we turn our keen eyes to the DC Universe's possible success if they were to focus on standalone films rather than fan service. It's a heated debate on the potential of time-travel movies like "The Flash" and the impact of iconic characters like Michael Keaton's Batman. We round-off with a critique of the Flash's comedic ending, and a thought-provoking exploration of alternate endings. So gear up for this rollercoaster ride as we dissect the superhero cinema landscape from top to bottom! --------- EPISODE CHAPTERS --------- (0:00:00) - Review and Critique of the Flash Take the conversation further! | The 48 Hour Film Project- Pittsburgh - 2023 Wrap Party Special | 30 May 2023 | 01:20:04
This week, we've got a special treat for you all. The past month, we've been working with The 48 Hour Film Project - Pittsburgh, the city chapter of the world wide contest of filmmakers who all compete on a given weekend to produce a short film from the ground up within 48 hours based on a provided character, prop, and line of dialogue. This year, we assisted in hosting a live stream for their wrap party where we interviewed tons of local filmmakers to see just how their weekend in the filmmaking crucible ended up. Special thanks to City Producer PJ Gaynard, JP Lavoie, Bryan Chemini, the staff at Riley's Pour House in Carnegie, and of course the filmmakers we spoke to who shared their stories with us. | Jack And Jill (2011) With The Silver Linings Playlist Podcast - Episode 270 | 22 May 2023 | 01:26:36
This week's movie is one that we have actively avoided since 2016. This week, we are tackling, with the help of Dustin and Nathan of The Silver Lining's Playlist Podcast, 2011's Jack & Jill. A movie so bad that it hurts our brains. Why does this movie suck so bad you might ask? Could it be the fact that Adam Sandler plays a female version of himself who's running gag is farting and pooping in every scene? Could it be the MASSIVE amounts of product placement that make this film feel like the bumper of a Nascar race car? Or could it be the sheer level of racist stereotypes and jokes that weren't ok in 2011 let alone in 2023? Well swig some Pepto Bismal folks, cause this one is gonna be a bumpy ride. | Edgar Wright - Filmmaker Retrospective with Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK! - Episode 269 | 15 May 2023 | 02:03:13
This week, after a bit of a break for our live show for the 48 hour film project in Pittsburgh, we are back to look at a filmmaker that has managed to constantly merge genres with a massive talent in using all the tools of the trade to visually tell a story. We're talking about Edgar Wright. The filmmaker behind Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver. A technical wizard and a master of filmmaking choreography. However, a massive talent like Edgar Wright requires a massive talent to assist in the review, so we are joined by fellow film podcaster, Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK! We pull back the curtain to take a hard look at this filmmaker and attempt to answer the question....can John come up with a million dollar catch phrase like "snoochie boochies" to include in Brian's next film. | The Ladykillers (2004) - Movie Review - Episode 268 | 30 Apr 2023 | 01:01:53
This week after our descent into the Breenpocalypse (seriously check episode 267 for our therapy session) we needed a serious pallete cleanser. For us that came in the form of the 2004 film, The Ladykillers. Deridded by critics and fans of the often celebrated Cohen Brothers, this remake of the 1955 british comedy about criminals robbing a casino by tunnelling through an elderly woman's basement is chock full of so many off the wall and darkly comedic moments. From the need for waffles, Tom Hank's doing his best Foghorn Leghorn impression, to a yet to be super famous J.K Simmons stealing scenes as the demolition expert with IBS, Garth Pancake. But does this movie deserve the hate or is this an under appreciated gem that has grown better with age? We'll find out today! DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | Twisted Pair (2018) - The Fifth Horseman of The Breenpocalypse - Episode 267 | 24 Apr 2023 | 01:05:21
"Please God make it stop.." Those words were inside our heads the entire time that we watched this week's movie, Twisted Pair. A movie by our favorite cultivator of cinematic crap, Neil Breen. And boy oh boy, this one was bad. Never did we think that we would long for the days of tuna, laptops, and magic rocks...but leave it to everyone's favorite god, alien, humanoid, cyborg-jesus; we started to miss the old day's of Breen. Instead what we were left with was a bizarre green screen hellscape that then splits it's time with an abandonded community college in Nevada. Special thanks to Wikipedia, as there would have been NO WAY that we would be able to parse a plot out of this film without the plot summary. DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! But a movie of this magnatiude requires some special guests to tackle it and boy do we have some fantastic guests. Cincinatti's own THE CINEMA GUYS stops by to talk Mario, Luigi, and Peach. | Monty Python's: The Life of Brian (1979) - Movie Review - Episode 265 | 12 Apr 2023 | 00:47:54
Happy Easter...Passover...or just day that happens to end in "Y". This week, we are celebrating one of the hallmark films of the 1970's that can be credited with birthing a great deal of the comedy that we all take for granted. 1979's Life of Brian is a brilliant satire that pokes fun at everything from the concept of religion to the tenets of politics. For it's time, the film was attacked by religious groups and even banned in the UK (a genuine Video Nasty). But has retained a status as an influentential piece of satire that has gone on to be referenced in everything from South Park to Family Guy. Fair Warning: We do go deep into frank discussions about religion and politics, as they are major themes within the film. DISCORD!!!Take the conversation further! | Creed III (2023) - Movie Review - Episode 263 | 21 Mar 2023 | 01:06:03
This week, we are a little bit late to the party on this film, but we had to do an episode on Leprechaun 3 last week in honor of St. Patrick's Day. That aside, we are talking about the newest entry into the long running Rocky Cinematic Universe, CREED III. The third outing of Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed as he fights for his legacy against the physical embodiment of his past in Johnathan Major's, "Diamond" Damian Anderson. This film marks Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut and based on the strength of this movie, we can't wait to see more. However, this film marks the first time that Sylvester Stallone's, Rocky, remains absent from the outing against the back drop of Hollywood infighting between Rocky Producer, Irwin Winkler and himself over the direction and rights to the franchise. But does this film even need Rocky? Tune in to find out. Articles Referenced: Sylvester Stallone Vs.
