Everyone has a dream of their dog being off the lead on beautiful walks and in this episode we are going to discuss how to get started on your recall journey. It is a skill we can start from day one with our new puppies capitalising on their natural proximity to us.
Following on from last weeks episode on post traumatic stress disorder in dogs, this week we talk to Danielle Beck about how trauma affects our dogs.
We discuss the causes of trauma in our dogs, how to identify it by comparing the meerkat in your dog and how to help your dog.
Danielle Beck is a clinical animal behaviourist specialising in reactive dogs, working with their owners to not only help their dogs overcome their reactivity but to understand things from their dogs point of view.
In this episode, we focus on something which isn’t talked about enough – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in dogs.
Join me as I meet Caroline Alupo who gives a compelling insight into the dogs she has worked with and the experiences they went through.
It is fascinating to find out when and how triggers show themselves and what as owners we need to be aware of. Knowing these signs may also help you understand or even realise your dog has experienced an incident which has caused PTSD.
Find out how you can help by creating a safe and predictable environment, providing positive reinforcement, and gradually exposing the dog to positive experiences, all of which can contribute to their recovery.
On this episode of the happy dog podcast we chat with the guys from Play 9 as they have just developed and launched a brand new canine enrichment product.
The Roolo is a brilliant treat dispensing toy that encourages scent work in your dog - young or small, big or small! The unique shape of the Roolo means that small dogs find it easy to push around and big dogs enjoy bashing it around!
Chatting to Rich, John and Lee gives a real insight into the challenges around developing such a toy as well as making it stand out in a crowded market!
Chatting this week with Sara about practical advice to help prepare your dog for the arrival of a new baby.
This is not a training plan as we know that training when you are heavily pregnant or have a new baby is almost impossible - instead this episode is full of practical advice to set everyone up to succeed.
This week, in a turn up for the books, we have a feline behaviourist on the podcast! Introducing cats and dogs can be a challenge and so in this podcast we talk about the best way to introduce the two - don't worry it is still very dog focused!
Do you find your dog walks are stressful? Do you dread walking your dogs? Not sure where to start with your dogs chaotic behaviour?
Well this is the podcast for you - with Steph and Carla's concept of dog training we talk about how we can help anxious dogs, frustrated dogs, nervous dogs, reactive dogs - well really all dogs have calmer walks!
We are less than one month out from firework season so we have no time to delay.
In this episode I chat to Jen from Pet Help at Home who is registered Veterinary Nurse as well as a canine behaviourist about what we can be doing now to help our dogs with their fear of fireworks.
We also talk about how to help your new puppy with fireworks.
We know all dogs are different so if you are struggling feel free to reach out via instagram with any questions you might have and I'll do what I can!
Dog walkers are a vital part of our dog care, many of us would not be able to have our dogs without a dog walker... but who is walking our dogs?
For me, picking who is going to walk our dog is as important as who is going to look after my child. They have keys to my home, they are here alone with me when they pick the dog up and they have sole responsibility for my dog when I am not there. That is a lot of responsibility.
In this episode I chat with my dog walker Emma about what to look for in a dog walker, red flags and what you should be asking!
In this week's episode I chat to Dani Paizis who is a K9 chiropractor. We talk about how we see many people doing things “to” dogs, rather than doing things “with our dogs”, so often a dog isn’t given any choice, or autonomy, which can be a big problem.
We discuss the role of social media both influencers and canine professionals are not showing welfare first, dog centred care of dogs and how that’s a problem.
Once we understand what a welfare first, dog centred philosophy looks like, we can then start to be more intentional within our relationships and truly advocate for their needs. Be this at the vets, with your dog trainer, with other family members, meeting other dogs on walks.

One of the first questions we get from first time puppy owners is how to be successful at toilet training their puppy - in this jam packed episode we go through every strategy, training plan and what not to do that we can think of!
If there is anything you think we have missed you can send us questions to add to our final episode to cover any outstanding questions you have about puppy ownership!
In this episode Karen and I discuss how giving the dog a job can be an effective part of helping a dog to overcome behavioural concerns. This isn't just for the traditional gun dogs either - this can help any breed of dog.
Often dogs in modern society have limited opportunity to exhibit natural canine behaviours and this often can lead to behavioural concerns. By helping dogs have an outlet for these behaviours we can reduce some of the issues that they face.

On the first of a new series of the Happy Dog Podcast I chat with Rachel Rodgers following the horrific dog attack in Birmingham earlier this week and Suella Bravermans discussion regarding the banning of XL bull breeds in the uk, about the Dangerous Dogs Act, banning breeds and why these numbers are going up!
There are so many factors to consider when it comes to keeping dogs and society safe so hopefully we have discussed as many as we can in this podcast!
I am really interested to hear your view points on the dangerous dogs act, dog bites, banning breeds etc - let me know what you think!
Don't forget to subscribe so you get the next episode as soon as it is out.
You can find Rachel Rodgers on instagram at @nosetotrailuk and her website is https://nosetotrail.co.uk/
In this omnibus episode of the Happy dog podcast we discuss: - why play after your training session can help your dog to remember what you have taught them. - Enrichment ideas for your dog and a note to myself that it is much easier than I think! - Why fetch can cause problems for your dog and how to enjoy it safely. - The ABC's of dog training
Please don't forget to like, share, and follow this podcast!
Understanding your ABC's really helps with working out what is going on with your dog, why they have learnt what they have and how to undo the training!
Breaking down your dogs behaviour into the ABC of it can help you to move through it... in its most simplistic form anyway!
I admitted last month that I had fallen off the wagon when it came to feeding my dog in an enriched way... but we are all going to get back onto it together!
In this episode we discuss some simple ways that we can all do with our dogs to enrich their mealtimes!
We all work hard to train our dogs so if I can give you a secret weapon to help your dog remember things you are going to take it aren't you!
In this episode we are discussing how play helps our dogs remember more following a training session - making your whole journey quicker and easier... any maybe more fun!
Welcome to January 2023's summary of our mini episodes!
Here you will find out: Why your dog hates the postman How to use a clicker Whether to ditch the bowl or not Whether your dog needs a coat!
Don't worry I've done my best to edit it so you don't have annoying music or any (hopefully) repetition - just all the podcasts from January in one place!
Does your dog need to wear a coat? Hopefully this episode isn't too controversial but given some of the weather we have had recently I thought it was worth discussing!
Let me know what your thoughts are on dogs in coats and what your favourite brands are!
Enrichment feeding has been a popular topic in the dog training world for a long time now, many trainers advocate ditching the bowl altogether and only feeding your dog in ways they find enriching - but is this right for your dog?
We discuss the pro's and con's of ditching the bowl helping you find what is right for your dog.
In this mini episode we are going to discuss how to use a clicker in your dogs training. We will go through everything from what a clicker is, how to use it and how to get started with it.
Clicker training can be a great addition to your training toolbox if used correctly so listen to how to get your dog started with a clicker.
Dog's barking at the postman is a relationship as long as dogs and postmen have been around. Dog's who love everyone often bark at postmen (post women and other delivery people), dog's who don't love people bark at people coming to the home, and dog's who never bark reserve their bark just for this time.
So why do they target delivery people?
We will explore this special relationship and work out the motivation behind the bark!
When I approached Sophie about coming on to our podcast to chat about the fallout of using punishment in behavioural modification I could not image that she would be able to have a client who used a shock collar on their dog who would be willing to chat on the podcast.
This is a fascinating insight into why people choose to use punitive methods on their dogs and the fallout from using these.
I don't want to give too much away but I really hope you enjoy this chat.
If you have any questions about anything discussed in this episode please do not hesitate to drop them over to my instagram: pooches.galore
It is no surprise that I advocated for the use of positive reinforcement as much as possible when it comes to dog training. But I felt it was time to go in depth about why I promote this method of training as much as possible - so here we go! A deep dive into why I don't like punishment.
A few things that I went through in the podcast that you might want to have more information about:
Before we get into how to train dogs we have to understand the foundation of all learning, in all organisms from the smallest amoeba to humans and that is classical conditioning.
This is reflexive learning and is vital to all animals learning and survival.
Understand this first and then we can work on more complex training next week.

Kimberly is an expert in city dogs, working with dogs from New York to London - who else can help us understand the specific needs of city dogs.
City dogs have specific requirements that even I hadn't thought about, not only when you live there but maybe for when you visit. I'm sure we can all come away with some top tips to help our dogs in more urban environments.
Dani is a canine chiropractor so who better to help me discuss the best way to exercise your puppy.
There is a lot of mis information about how much puppies should exercise and how they should exercise. Not only do we discuss the amount they are getting we also talk about different ways you can tire your puppy out so they sleep more and then ultimately bite you less!
You might remember Harriet from our first season, she has 5 (yes 5!) dachshunds and this year two of them were just not getting on. In this episode of the happy dog podcast we delve into what it is like when your dogs are not getting on - we discuss what was going on from an owner point of view and from a behaviourist point of view.
Remember we can always help dogs who are not the best of friends so do reach out to an APBC qualified behaviourist for help.

In this episode we are preparing our dogs to come out of lockdown. For some of out puppies there are lots of new experiences coming, for some dogs there might be training that has been forgotten and for some of our dogs things are going to feel overwhelming.
We want to start our training now so that we can use the pathway out of lockdown to aid our training plans!
Over the last year there has been a dramatic rise in people looking to purchase a puppy. Unfortunately there is a dark side to this and that dark side is that more and more puppy scams have appeared.
On this podcast I chat with Laura Short who is a solicitor for a national law firm specialising in dealing with and resolving disputes between individuals.
I met Laura when I trained her adorable puppy Ruby and today we are chatting about the legal side of buying a puppy.
Please note that all advice given in this podcast is just general advice and if you are at all concerned you should consult your own solicitor and take individual advice - these are just ideas that might help you!
