Unbelievable treatments in Chinese Medicine History - with Michael Brown S10 E0126 mars 202601:18:01

Unbelievable Treatments in Chinese Medicine History: Swallowed Nails, Faked Illnesses & Genius Cases with Michael Brown

From a child who swallowed a nail and was saved by an ingenious Ming dynasty formula, to patients faking dramatic blood-coughing episodes, this episode uncovers the wildest, most surprising stories from classical Chinese medicine texts.

Join host Marie Hopkinson and special guest Michael Brown — scholar, acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, and classical Chinese translator — as they dive into forgotten cases from Zhang Jingyue and other texts. Discussing the integration of acupuncture by famous herbalists, and the joy of returning to source texts to bring happiness into modern practice.

You'll also hear insights into classical literature, point combinations, the value of studying source texts, and why frequent treatment and deep study still matter in clinic today.

About Michael BrownMichael Brown is a Brisbane-based scholar-practitioner of Chinese Medicine with clinical experience since 2009. He completed Honours in Classical Chinese at the University of Queensland and is Head Lecturer at the Academy of Source-based Medicine, which he co-founded in 2022. He has contributed to or edited over 6 major translations and works, including the landmark Explanations of Channels and Points (Vol 1 & 2) — often considered one of the most important acupuncture commentaries — and multiple volumes of Zhang Jingyue’s Complete Compendium (including Eight Principles, Ten Questions, Mingmen Theory, and the Eight Battle Arrays of New Formulae). His passion lies in bridging classical literature with modern clinical practice.

Perfect for TCM students, acupuncture and herbal medicine practitioners, self-learners, and anyone fascinated by the depth and surprises of traditional Chinese medicine. Dive into the classics, challenge common assumptions, and get inspired to deepen your own study and practice.

Self Help for depression using Chinese Medicine wisdom through knowing where and how you can intervene. Learning how the 5 Elements play a role in the physiology of depression not only helps you understand how an acupuncturist or herbalist would go about treatment in re-balancing the five elements, but also how /where you can help yourself. This second half of this is more about the self-help aspects. The first half is physiology of the five elements. How Chinese Medicine Chose Me - My personal story of how I got into Acupuncture & Herbs - Marie Hopkinson S6 E4 08 févr. 202300:16:24

Do you ever wonder how someone gets into the field of acupuncture and  Chinese medicine? 🤔 Well, a subscriber asked, and my patients often ask  me that very question and my story might just surprise you! I actually  had never even had acupuncture before I started studying it.

Looking back it was kind of serendipitous.  Sometimes I think that   "Chinese Medicine chose me".

I'm so grateful I found this amazing  medicine at 17 years old, and now I can't imagine doing anything else.

Navigating the world of further study for Herbalists and Chinese medicine practitioners can be a tough one - where to start? Hopefully  this episode will bring some clarity this for students of TCM, new  graduates of TCM, practitioners who've been in business a long time but searching for something better for their patients AND even to our  majority of listeners who are patients of those practitioners - give you  some insights into what dedicated practitioners like Collin go through  to become a respected teacher in the industry.   It was such a pleasure to interview fellow colleague, Collin Campbell.  Collin  has been practicing Chinese Medicine for 15 years, and has devoted his  career thus far to Classical Chinese medicine. In addition to his  private practice, as part of training to become a fellow of ICEAM,  Collin has seen over 1000 patients supervised by Dr Arnaud Versylus as  part of his fellowship training.  Some of the topics we discuss  are the differences between studying TCM and Classical Chinese Medicine,  the typical journey that many Chinese medicine practitioners take in  their quest to learn Classical systems of Chinese medicine.
ICEAM Is a pulse-based system of herbal medicine, we discuss how this relates to what ICEAM practitioners are taught.

How to Harmonise your spirit with the four seasons - with Tyler Rowe S4 ep911 nov. 202101:06:25

Living in harmony with the seasons is a major feature of the health advice in the Nei Jing (Yellow Emperors classic of Internal Medicine), in this interview Marie discuss the relevance of this ancient wisdom in a modern world with Tyler Rowe.  Tyler Rowe is not only an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist but an expert on Wu Yun Liu Qi. He's got a great sense of humor and is incredibly down to earth. How do we tackle things like Air-conditioning and artificially induced climates? How do different cultures tell when seasons change and what should we do in response to this to lessen the chance of getting sick from the environment (Cold and flu like illness).

This advice is super relevant for students of CM, patients of acupuncturists /CM and even practitioners themselves who are looking for relevant ways to interpret the Nei Jing and the seasonal advice. It was my absolute pleasure to record this interview and I hope you find this wisdom as useful as I do, for yourself and your family/ community.

Wu Wei, Alchemy and How to Transcend the Five Elements with Leta Herman (Inspired Action Podcast) S4 Ep819 oct. 202100:56:59

What is Wu Wei? What is it to be your true self, be your element...but then can you be more than that? What a powerful discussion I had with Leta Herman from Inspired Action Podcast & the Alchemy Learning  Center.     We discuss what is this concept of Alchemy, how past trauma can impact  us and who we are, and help us to transcend to our true self and even  beyond that into a Sage.

About today's Guest, Leta Herman:   Leta Herman is an Alchemical Healer, Chinese Medicine teacher, Podcast  host of the Inspired Action Podcast, as well as author of Through the  Mystery Gate, The Energy of Love, Connecting Your Circle, and The BIG  “Little” Gua Sha Book. She is the founder of the Alchemy Healing Center,  a very active Chinese Medicine clinic in Northampton, MA dedicated to  helping clients find their true potential through Alchemical  transformation. She is the driving force behind the new Alchemy Learning  Center (AlchemyLearningCenter.com), offering online classes and live  events related to The Five Elements, The Nine Palaces, and Alchemy.

She has immersed herself in the philosophies of Daoism, Alchemical  Healing, and Chinese Medicine for over twenty years. She is a long-time  student of Master Jeffrey Yuen, an 88th generation Daoist priest and  Chinese Medicine master. She is also a graduate of Eliot Cowan’s Plant  Spirit Medicine studies program and has studied intensively with  well-known teachers and former students of J.R. Worsley, who brought  Five Element Acupuncture to England in the 1960s. A Smith College  graduate and past nationally syndicated journalist, Herman is a world  explorer who speaks multiple languages, loves life, her family, and a  challenging game of Boggle.

How anyone can master memorisation of Chinese Medicine with HAMISH BROWN S4 ep707 oct. 202100:57:54

Hamish doesn't have a photographic memory but if you talked to him about Chinese herbs, you would think that he does. This episode is for  students and practitioners of Chinese medicine that want to improve their commitment to memorization and learn from someone who has  continually applied themselves to it over many years.  Hamish is very  encouraging.   It was my pleasure to talk all things memorization & learning Acupuncture points, Herbal formulas and more with  Hamish Brown, a truly accomplished practitioner in Chinese Medicine. We talk about how he committed himself to memorization at various intervals  in his career and in student life. Hamish has a strong commitment to  learning Chinese Medicine and the benefits it brings to his patients is  evident from the time I've spent personally at his clinic in Armidale  doing clinical observation and Classical pulse diagnosis training in  2018In this episode, some of the themes and topics include: - How to stay motivated as a student and practitioner - Styles of learning and memorization tools that have worked for him- how to overcome the common barriers and obstacles that many practitioners face. - How to let go of regret and focus on moving forward in your learning at any level of learning
