⚖️ "No man should either do evil, or return evil for evil, or betray the right." — Socrates, Crito
The day before his execution, Socrates's oldest friend arrives with a plan and an argument: escape is possible, the money is ready, the friends are waiting. All that's needed is Socrates's agreement. What follows is one of the most searching conversations in Western philosophy — not about whether the verdict was just (Socrates has already argued it wasn't), but about whether a just man can break an unjust law. Socrates says no. This is the complete, human-read audiobook of Crito, with the full text on screen and original illustrations by Marwa El-Sayed. Translated by Benjamin Jowett and narrated by Mark Cassidy.
🎙️ THE CHILLBOOKS EXPERIENCE
✅ Original Narration: Mark Cassidy's calm, precise delivery brings out every turn in Socrates's argument without dramatising what needs no drama.
✅ Full Text On Screen: Follow Jowett's translation word-for-word — ideal for study, annotation, or close reading alongside the audio.
✅ Original Illustrations: Artwork by Marwa El-Sayed, created for this production.
✅ No Background Music: Silence befitting a man who chose death over dishonesty.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS
00:00 Crito by Plato 00:15 Introduction 07:42 Crito, by Plato (Complete Dialogue)
✍️ ABOUT THE DIALOGUE
Crito is the third of Plato's four dialogues on the trial and death of Socrates — following Euthyphro and the Apology, and preceding Phaedo. It takes place in Socrates's prison cell, days before his execution, when his friend Crito arrives before dawn with a plan for escape.
The dialogue is short but structurally crucial: where the Apology argues that Socrates was wrongly condemned, Crito argues that even wrongful condemnation does not justify breaking the law. Socrates personifies the Laws of Athens themselves, who ask: if you have lived your whole life under us and benefited from us, how can you now act to destroy us? The answer Socrates gives — that he cannot — has been debated ever since as a founding text in the philosophy of civil disobedience.
✍️ ABOUT PLATO
Plato (427–347 BCE) was a student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle — the central figure in the transmission of Greek philosophy to Western civilization. He founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world, and wrote some thirty-five dialogues in which Socrates appears as the main speaker.
The Socratic dialogues on the trial and death of Socrates — Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo — are among the most widely read works in the history of philosophy.

Confessions: The Rescuer from Error by Al-Ghazali
Season 17 · Episode 2
Thursday, June 11, 2026 • Duration 01:15:14
🕯️ "The seeker after truth is not one who studies the writings of the ancients and, following his natural disposition, puts his trust in them, but rather the one who suspects his faith in them and questions what he gathers from them." — Al-Ghazali, The Rescuer from Error
One of the most extraordinary works in the history of ideas: a medieval philosopher's account of his own intellectual collapse — and the path out. Al-Ghazali walks through every school of thought available to him (theologians, philosophers, Ismailis, Sufis) and systematically dismantles his certainties one by one, until only experience can restore what reason failed to prove. This is the complete, human-read audiobook with on-screen captions. Translated by Claude Field and narrated by Mark Cassidy.

✍️ ABOUT PLATO
Plato (428/427–348/347 BC) was a philosopher in Classical Greece and the founder of the Academy in Athens. His work laid the foundations of Western philosophy, political theory, ethics, and science. Through the dialogues of Socrates, Plato explored some of humanity’s most enduring questions about justice, knowledge, virtue, reality, and the ideal society.
The Republic, written around 375 BC, is his most influential work. Through a wide-ranging dialogue on justice and the ideal state, Plato introduces concepts that have shaped political thought for over two millennia, including the philosopher-king, the tripartite soul, the Form of the Good, and the famous Allegory of the Cave.

✍️ ABOUT THE ODYSSEY
The Odyssey is the second of the two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, composed sometime in the 8th century BCE. It follows Odysseus (Ulysses in the Roman tradition) through ten years of wandering after the fall of Troy — encountering the Cyclops Polyphemus, the witch Circe, the dead in Hades, the Sirens, the monster Scylla, and the whirlpool Charybdis — while his wife Penelope holds off suitors at home in Ithaca and his son Telemachus comes of age.
✍️ ABOUT HOMER
Homer is the name ancient Greeks gave to the poet (or tradition of poets) responsible for The Iliad and The Odyssey — two foundational texts of Western civilization. Whether a single person or a long oral tradition codified into writing, the poems of Homer have shaped literature, philosophy, art, and storytelling for nearly three thousand years. Virgil modeled the Aeneid on them; Dante opened with echoes of Odysseus; Joyce built Ulysses on their architecture.

✍️ ABOUT THE BOOK
The Rescuer from Error (Al-Munqidh min al-Dalal) is Al-Ghazali's spiritual autobiography, written around 1100 CE near the end of his life. It is one of the few works in classical Islamic thought to take intellectual crisis seriously as a subject. Ghazali describes a period of total epistemic paralysis in which he could no longer trust his senses or his reason, and documents his methodical journey through every intellectual tradition of his age in search of certainty.
The book culminates in his embrace of Sufism — not as a rejection of reason, but as its completion. It has often been compared to Augustine's Confessions and Descartes' Meditations as one of the great works of philosophical autobiography.
✍️ ABOUT AL-GHAZALI
Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (1058–1111 CE) was a Persian theologian, jurist, philosopher, and Sufi mystic — one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Islam. He held the prestigious chair of theology at the Nizamiyya of Baghdad before abandoning public life to pursue a decade of travel, contemplation, and spiritual retreat.
His magnum opus, The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya Ulum al-Din), remains one of the most widely read works in the Islamic world. In The Rescuer from Error, he offers the most personal account of the intellectual and spiritual crisis that transformed his life and thought.

✍️ ABOUT SUN TZU
The Art of War is the most influential classic of strategy in world literature: a compact Chinese treatise in thirteen chapters traditionally attributed to Sun Tzu, military thinker, strategist, and philosopher. Written for the battlefield but far larger than warfare alone, it explores judgment, preparation, flexibility, deception, morale, terrain, and intelligence with a precision that has made it essential reading for soldiers, rulers, politicians, executives, and students of human conflict.
This edition uses the celebrated English translation by Lionel Giles, the early 20th-century British sinologist whose version helped establish The Art of War in the English-speaking world. Clear, concise, and enduring, Giles' translation remains one of the most widely read gateways into Sun Tzu's thought.

✍️ ABOUT AVICENNA
Ibn Sīnā (980–1037 AD), known in the West as Avicenna, was the towering polymath of the Islamic Golden Age — physician, philosopher, and scientist whose Canon of Medicine remained a standard text in European universities for six centuries. A Compendium on the Soul was written as a gift to a prince: a concise but rigorous treatise on the nature of the soul structured in ten sections, moving from empirical argument to metaphysical proof. The translation by Edward Abbott van Dyck (1829–1895) — American missionary, scholar, and lexicographer — remains one of the most faithful English renderings.
