This mix got inspired by one of my best discoveries of this year: Zane Callister, whose Young Collective productions and UTAH band music embody the uplifting spirit of Chill Pill mixes. Check him out at soundcloud.com/young-collective.

Another inspiration came from the second track, Her Name by Arros & Light Memory, which samples words from one of my favorite sci-fi films Her. The whole quote goes like this:

It's like I'm reading a book... and it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place that's not of the physical world. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this who I am now. And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can't live your book any more.

Back in 2015, this mix premiered my residency on Frisky Radio's CHILL channel, under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton. I had previously submitted a promo guest mix and they loved it enough to invite me to join their DJ roster. It was a big step for me and important validation of the image in which I sought to sculpt my chillout mixes, known as Unwind back then.

This year marks 10 years since I started producing professional music mixes, and this was my very first mix, released under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton.

Before this mix, I got my first taste of chillout and ambient music when I stumbled on DJ River‘s catalogue of mixes, as well as MDB's Beautiful Voices mixes. I completely fell in love with them and the genre as a whole. "The greatest tribute to the dead is not grief, but gratitude," Thornton Wilder once wrote.

Two months in, my grief for losing my best friend Chris is still ever-present. Nevertheless, realizing that painful separation was always going to be an inevitable price for attachment, I started attempting to derail the train of sorrow onto the path of gratitude.

Chris's arrival and presence in my life sparked countless joyful moments. He got me through difficult times, not by doing anything extraordinary, but by just being there. He was an inspiration too. You're here listening to this show because Chris was there at the beginning with me in 2016, brainstorming how I might go about creating and branding it.

For all of these things and everything else, I made this mix to say: thank you for all of it Chris! For the ups and downs, for the highs and lows, for the sights and sounds, for the inspiration to be all I can be, for believing in me and pushing me to realize my potential.

And... I even tucked in here your favorite song: "When She Loved Me". They played it at your funeral's closing ceremony. I will always remember how the last piano note of this song and subsequent silence made me feel then: like it was curtains closing on our lives together. But now I realize it was the beginning of my journey to find you again, through sheer gratitude for our time together.

On the eve of the 1st anniversary of when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, I mourn the loss of my best friend who lost his short-lived fight to it last month. I made this mix in an attempt to process my shock, my disbelief that years of talking to him every single day have been undone, and came to an indisputable irreversible end, in a matter of a week. He was my rock through thick and thin and I never imagined losing him this soon, at the young age of 36.

But I also made this for all of you out there who lost a dearly beloved, be it to any cause, foreseen or sudden. Much has been written about grief, but contending with it and living in a post-traumatic shock is something no one can prepare you for. Words escape me and I find myself in whirlwind of emotions that come in unpredictable waves. Emotions like anger, denial, sorrow, disbelief and regret. I go about my day feeling numb, aimless and dejected. I'm told time is a healer, but what if I don't want to be healed? I'm scared of our memories fading into oblivion.

Maybe this mix will be a solace for all of us who grieve. It has the highs and lows, the ebbs and flows, the wave of emotions that come to define our experience living with such insurmountable loss.

And to Chris I whisper:

Sometimes I like to zone out and run my imagination wild and free. I like to think that one day, somehow humans will find a way to coexist. To be able to give and take. To share this planet Earth equally and fairly among all of us, and to nourish it so that our future generations will be able to do the same.

So when you’re listening to this mix, just set back, relax and imagine. Imagine you’re in a wide open green field, setting next to a tree in the early hours of the day. It’s the break of dawn and the sky above you is slowly but surely starting to light up from darkness. The clouds are clearing up and the early rays of sunshine are passing through, touching upon the grass and creating moving waves of lights. And while you’re enjoying the breeze in this peaceful atmosphere, reflect on what it feels like to live in a city of hope, a city were people loved and where kind to each other. They don’t speak the same language, have the same color or share the same religion, but they’ve found a way to embrace and accept one another, for better and worse.

Most mixes I create are typically inspired by a single song that I hear and feel strongly about creating a themed mix around. This one, however, has two sources of inspiration.

First, I stumbled upon the dreamy, hazy and romantic style of a band called Cigarettes After Sex (the name beats me!). They became an instant favorite and their song Falling in Love was crying out to be the star of a mix. A little after that, Hans Zimmer and co. mesmerized me in the emotionally epic soundtrack to the Netflix original film Hillbilly Elegy. This mix begins and ends with music from the soundtrack, which gives it a particularly high note to end on that I hope would leave you with a lingering sense of love and hope.

This is a throwback mix released 5 years ago under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton in a series called Unwind.

The mix was inspired by the 5th track (More Than Nothing), and is centered around our desire to sometimes "turn back the hands of the clock" and do something we missed out on doing. Even though the song describes a man's regret for not pursuing a relationship, I'd like to think of this idea more generically to include everything we procrastinate or never get to do that we later wish we would have done, or at least tried!

Musically, this mix was by far the most time-consuming 1-hour mix I've ever created! It almost burnt me out trying to perfect all aspects of the mix, especially the first of the two mashups, track 13, which is made up of two equally amazing songs by DeYarmond Edison and All India Radio.

I listened to this album on repeat and set out on a journey to discover the best of what this genre has to offer.

Zane Callister, the man behind Young Collective moniker, is an artist whose music resonates with me. After featuring him in several mixes, I decided to do him justice by dedicating an entire mix to the gift he brings to this world.

More than a composer, he is a storyteller. He uses music as a medium to create immersive and emotional experiences for his listeners, something I aspire to do in this show as well.

In this interview, Zane describes his creative process when scoring films or creating sync licensing pieces. I watched the interview after completing this mix, and it was a pleasant coincidence to hear him speak of how he would score a scene from one of my favorite TV shows, This Is Us. In this mix, you'll hear Zane's song, It Started With Silence, mixed around 2 pieces from the soundtrack to that show, which also happens to be one of my favorite soundtracks of all time too created by the brilliant Siddhartha Khosla.

“Promise of New Beginnings Among Old Endings”, a beautiful upbeat track by the talented producer Fort Road, has inspired me to create a mix themed around our deep-rooted desire to be free from oppression and be in control of our destiny.

This is yet another throwback mix that was released exactly 5 years ago under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton in a series called Unwind. I worked on this mix for a while, and I was so pleased with how it turned out. To my delight, friskyRadio quite liked it and decided to promote it as a guest mix on their long-running Chillout Sundays on 7/6/2015. The mix aired and did really well that friskyRadio approached me for an offer to have a monthly show, which airs to this day. It was an incredible feeling to finally get a worldwide stage for my mixes and a chance to reach bigger audience of people who appreciate this kind of melodic and positive chillout and ambient music.
