| Ep. 107 Jesse (1700 USCF) | 10 Aug 2023 | 01:17:09 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Jesse. He’s an avid adult improver who plays at the same club as me. We talked a lot about his rapid improvement journey from 1400 to nearly 1700. His journey included many bumps and rating drops. We talked about the books that had the most impact including Silman’s Reassess Your Chess, endgame work, and tactics study. Jesse also talked about taking breaks from the improvement side of chess when he starts to feel burnt out. These breaks help him come back even more excited to learn and improve.

| Ep. 106 An Examination of Dr. Scull’s Chess with GM Noel Studer | 03 Aug 2023 | 01:17:54 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I am joined by GM Noel Studer. Noel examined my last 30 games and we discussed the state of my game. I think this is a great episode for anyone wondering how to examine their own game, especially in times of rating loss and turmoil. With Noel’s help we were able to abandon ideas like reworking my opening repertoire or diving deep into rook endgames. Instead, we came up with a plan focusing on doing tactics in a specific way.

| Ep. 105 Joe Bruin (1875 USCF) | 27 Jul 2023 | 01:16:48 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Joe Bruin. He’s a prolific streamer that I’ve run into at the last two OTB tournaments that I attended. We talked a lot about playing chess for fun without expressly trying to improve. Joe has seen massive rating gains at points in his life without studying. He mostly played and streamed a lot of chess. We discussed the joy of playing and socializing with chess without being obsessed with ratings and rating gain. It was a bit of a different conversation than usual, but Joe’s perspective has made me think differently about my own chess journey.

| Ep. 104 GM Jacob Aagaard | 20 Jul 2023 | 01:28:17 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with the one and only GM Jacob Aagaard. We discussed a wide range of topics such as his chess career, coaching, and adult improvement. Most importantly I asked him if a 40 year old adult could achieve the NM title. We also talked about how adults should go about improving. He expanded on a variety of ideas such as going slow and building good habits. GM Aagaard dropped many valuable gems in this one.

| Ep. 103 Dawn (1100 Lichess) | 14 Jul 2023 | 01:00:53 | |
This week, I spoke with Dawn. She’s a new chess player who picked up the game in her 60’s. We talked a lot about the challenges of having a low rating while still being excited to talk about chess. Dawn suggested a few books such as Everyone’s First Chess Workbook and Susan Polgar’s Learn Chess series. Dawn and I talked about how to analyze games, fears of going to a tournament, and the value of coaching. It was a lively and inspiring conversation.

| Ep. 102 Michael - Noseknowsall (1900 USCF) | 06 Jul 2023 | 01:23:39 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I talked to Michael, better known as Noseknowsall. He’s had a steady climb over 8 years of chess. We talked primarily about the books that helped him climb, the Chess Dojo, and other areas that helped his improvement. Michael credits much of his success to Jeremy Silman’s Reassess Your Chess. But Michael also recommends many other books such as Silman’s Complete Endgame Course and Strategic Chess Exercises by Bricard.

| Ep. 100 Dr Scull (1675 USCF) | 22 Jun 2023 | 01:14:26 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, the focus is on my year in chess and a recap of the National Open. Guest of the show Jay Garrison joined me and shared his wisdom on many of the subjects. We focused on tournament prep, tournament performance, who I met at the tournament, ratings dips, what I worked on this year, my goals for next year, and handling setbacks. Hopefully, you enjoy the show!

| Ep. 99 Hannah (1300 Chesscom) | 15 Jun 2023 | 01:03:12 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Hannah. She started chess with the Queen’s Gambit in 2021. Since then she’s been able to raise her rating at least 500 points, mainly by playing a lot of chess. Hannah found a club early in her journey and has been able to play mostly unrated OTB games. This inspired her to study tactics and some endgames. Also, look out for her story about phone smashing!

| Ep. 98 (Paul 2245 FIDE) | 08 Jun 2023 | 01:08:38 | |
This week, I spoke with Paul. He has a fascinating chess journey. In his 20’s, Paul achieved master and was knocking on the door of the FM title. Thirty years later and some health setbacks, Paul is trying to recapture his previous strength and perhaps even build upon it. We talked about a wide variety of topics such as his training methods, the challenge of living up to one’s rating, the psychology of going to a chess tournament again, and of course his victory over GM Bisguier. It was a fascinating conversation about how life and circumstances can make the chess journey all the more challenging, and hopefully in the end, rewarding!

| Ep. 196 Brian (1100 USCF) | 08 May 2025 | 01:02:28 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke to Brian. We talked about his rapid rise from 700-1100 USCF in 4 months. He has been playing the role of the underrated kid at age 52! Brian is a big fan of the Chess Dojo, so, in many ways, this was an unpaid advertisement for their wonderful program. Brian talked a lot about the value of playing long OTB board. His rating was not improving from his online rapid games. But discovering the full immersion of a 90 minute game has allowed him to unlock new depths in his games.

This week, I spoke with Brad. We have similar lives, but he has had a much sharper ratings gain. We talked about his focus on playing over studying. Although he has enjoyed Gotham Chess videos and courses, as well as Naroditsky’s speed runs. Brad also recommended a few books such as Amateur to IM. We talked quite a bit about Brad’s first OTB tournament and his experiences with coaching.

| Ep. 96 Nick (1715 USCF) | 25 May 2023 | 01:11:14 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Nick. He’s a founding Chesspunk member and Chessable beast. He’s gained about 175 points in the last year. We focused on what he’s changed including studying master games, switching to the Ruy Lopez, doing less opening work, joining the SayChess accountability training group, and taking breaks. It was an enlightening conversation from someone who was able to do what we all desire, gain those precious ratings points!

| Ep. 94 NM Philemon | 11 May 2023 | 00:48:10 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I had the honor of talking to Philemon. He is the rare person that climbs from new player to master as an adult. Phil shared the secrets to his success: love the process, immersion (putting in the time), and well timed breaks. Phil provided several resources that he used to improve such as The Art of the Attack, My System, Silman, and Tal’s Life and Games. Philemon is certainly an inspiration to adult improvers everywhere, and I hope you enjoy the episode!

| Ep. 93 Dan (1850 USCF) | 04 May 2023 | 01:14:58 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Dan. We focused on his comeback to chess in 2021. In about a year he gained almost 300 rating points! Better yet, his approach to improvement was fairly simple. Dan focuses mainly on analyzing his games, categorizing blunders, eliminating blunders, controlling time issues, and turning knowledge into skill. I hope you will find this episode as exciting as I have!

| Ep. 92 NM Matt (Chessgoals) | 27 Apr 2023 | 01:13:29 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I had the pleasure of talking to Matt. We spoke briefly about his journey as a child and adult. Most of the interview was spent discussing his thoughts on adult improvement. His conclusions are motivated by data analysis. His most shocking assertion is that adult improvers should spend less time studying and more time playing! We also went over the advanced program from his improvement website Chessgoals. It was an insightful interview that has certainly made me rethink my own journey.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with IM Kostya Kavutskiy. We focused on three main topics: his chess improvement journey, endgame studies, and the Chess Dojo. It was refreshing to hear Kostya’s journey sounds so similar to other adult improvers that I’ve talked to. Wrestling with time and many holes to fill is such a challenge even for an IM. We talked a lot about the value of Endgame Studies and the contribution of his work Chess Studies 101.

Until his last tournament, he had lost 150 points in 6 months. He shared his response to the situation. We also discussed our performance and takeaways from the Western Class Championships.

| Ep. 83 Peter (1500 USCF) | 17 Feb 2023 | 01:01:50 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I am joined by Peter. He’s an adult improver that picked up the game as a child and played in high school but put it aside for 20 years. After coming back to the game, he had a quick rise to 1300, and then a slower rise to 1500. However, since then, he has been stuck in a plateau, or possibly, a pit of despair. We talked a lot about his struggles with losing, learning to appreciate the game, the benefits of coaching, and what has worked for me. It was a fascinating dive into the mind of someone who has been able to find an alternative to raging after losses.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Matthew. He’s a dedicated chess improver who picked up the game at 48. We spoke in detail about his approach to chess improvement diving into his obsession / addiction. We discussed his current approach of playing games rather than studying. We also talked about whether or not his chess obsession has become an addiction that has a negative impact on his life. Omar’s honesty and openness are always refreshing and enjoyable!

| Ep. 70 Zach (1800 rapid) | 10 Nov 2022 | 01:25:08 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, Zach from episode 22 makes his return. He talks extensively about his quick climb to 1800 and then devastating fall back to 1480! We talked about how he dealt with adversity and worked his way back to a new high of 1850. Zach recommended a number of resources such as Susan Polgar’s defensive book Learn Chess the Right Way, Book 3 and Survive and Thrive. It was a fascinating conversation, and I’m impressed that Zach didn’t walk away when at his peak adversity.

We both provided a bunch of thoughts on playing high stakes games, the value of coaching, and fixing our holes (raising floors). We also talked about what we are doing now to try to break through the next plateau.

| Ep. 66 Tai - Chess By the Numbers (1550 USCF) | 13 Oct 2022 | 01:19:14 | |
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Tai, or as he is better known, Chess By the Numbers. We had a great conversation about his journey and improvement. The three primary topics were starting a chess club, finding training partners, and turning chess knowledge into skill. Tai’s journey is like many of us, struggling to find time and people to play with. But Tai did the unusual, he started his own chess club … twice! His story is an inspiring one in which he asserts that if you build it they will come.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with the legend himself Ben Johnson. Ben is the proprietor of the Perpetual Chess Podcast, How to Chess, and his new substack blog the Perpetual Chess Link-Fest https://benjohnson.substack.com/. The episode starts with a checkin on Ben’s improvement progress. It’s been an up and down journey for him during the last year. This week, we focused mostly on books. We went through each rating band and suggested books that have worked for us as trainers and improvers. Ben has reviewed many chess books and his expertise is boundless. We also answered a wide range of questions about chess books. I will make a page with all of the recommendations on the Patreon page for the podcast. It will be accessible by all.
