In this powerful episode of Chatting with Slava the Jordanian, host Dr. Slava (STJ) sits down with Haitham Khraishi, a Palestinian-American storyteller whose life has been shaped by navigating two cultures, two identities, and two worlds.

Born in the Washington DC area and raised between Maryland and Palestine, Haitham shares the emotional and cultural realities of growing up in the Palestinian diaspora. From childhood memories during times of geopolitical conflict to the struggle of feeling “Palestinian in America and American in Palestine,” his journey reflects the deeper questions of identity, belonging, and cultural responsibility.

Haitham discusses how education became a lifeline within Palestinian culture and how the pressure to succeed shaped his path toward earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Yet his story doesn’t stop there.

While studying in college, he discovered a unique passion for geography, history, and world flags—an interest that eventually led him to begin creating educational content on TikTok. From exploring historic Palestinian cities to educating audiences about the flags and civilizations of the world, his work bridges history, culture, and modern storytelling.

# 28 Jinn, Jeannies & the Journey Within: Arab Views on Angels, Demons, and Divine Struggle06 Aug 202500:58:01

Send us Fan Mail

In this rich and riveting panel discussion, Dr. Slava is joined by her cohost JD Yusef and returning guest Dr. Ihab to unpack one of the most captivating and often misunderstood elements of Arab cultural and theological tradition: the unseen world of jinn, angels, demons, and spiritual companions.

From pop culture’s portrayal of Jeannies in bottles to ancient Arabian stories of jinn, this episode explores how myth, religion, and mysticism converge in Arab thought. The panel breaks down the theological roots of Iblis (Lucifer) and his role in both Islamic and Christian worldviews, and dives into the concept of the Qareen—a spiritual double said to be born with each person and remain until death.

Is the Qareen metaphorical or real? How do Arabs perceive the constant tug-of-war between good and evil within the human soul? What does this say about our thoughts, our actions, and our spiritual testing? And how does Arab spirituality define the hierarchy of beings—from humans to angels to devils?

Dr. Slava also opens up about a personal mystical experience in Egypt, bringing these abstract beliefs into tangible, emotional territory.

If you’ve ever wondered how Arabs make sense of the invisible world, and how spirituality shapes identity across religion, culture, and conscience—this is the episode for you.

TV, Truth, and Two Worlds: How 1970s America Shaped the Immigrant Experience15 Apr 202601:03:18

Before stepping foot in the United States, many immigrants believed they already knew America—through television.

In this powerful episode, Slava the Jordanian sits down with Dr. Ihab Abdahim to unpack how iconic 1970s TV shows shaped their perception of American life long before they experienced it firsthand.

  •  The stark contrast between media portrayal and lived reality
  •  Growing up in two worlds balancing identity, language, and expectations
  •  The role of shows like All in the Family and The Jeffersons in addressing racism and social change
  •  Personal stories of discrimination and the reality of being Arab in America during tense political times

This episode is a raw, honest conversation about perception versus reality, identity, and the power of media to shape belief systems.
