Parenting Teenagers: Let Go of Control, Keep the Connection (with Nicki Cohen)25 Oct 202600:57:14

Send us Fan Mail

One summer they’re in Year 6 doing the school show, and the next they’re in secondary school, pulling away and wanting to do everything on their own. Nobody prepares us for that part.

Therapist Nicki Cohen is back! Nicki works with teenagers, was the mental health lead at a large secondary school, and is a mom to three boys aged 13, 16 and 19. Last week I talked about how we become a mom over and over again as our kids grow. This week Nicki shows us what that looks like in the teenage years, and how to stay close to your teen when they don’t need you in the same way anymore.

In this episode:

  • Why pulling away from parents is a normal, healthy part of adolescence, even when it hurts
  • Why your job as a parent doesn’t get less important, it just gets a new job description
  • Why Nicki thinks 16 to 18 might be the hardest age to parent
  • Small language swaps that stop your teen’s back going up
  • Moving from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat
  • How Nicki handled her 16-year-old going to Reading Festival without doing everything for him
  • Side-by-side communication: why the best conversations happen in the car
  • Getting into your teen’s world by being curious, even if you know nothing about football or rap
  • One-to-one time, and why the quiet ones can get lost in bigger families
  • What to do when you can see something’s wrong but they won’t talk to you
  • Why letting go can feel like grief, and how two things can be true at once

Nicki’s 3 questions to ask before you step in

  1. Can they do this alone?
  2. Can they do it with me alongside them?
  3. Or is this something I genuinely need to take control of?

Theirs, ours, mine
When your teen falls out with a friend, for example:

  • Theirs: deciding what to do and whether to repair the friendship
  • Ours: listening, empathising, and sharing our own experience
  • Mine: managing the urge to pick up the phone to the other child’s mom!

Language swaps to try

  • “What did you do?” → “What’s happened? Do you want to tell me?”
  • “You need to do this.” → “What do you think you’re going to do about it?”
  • “I told you so.” → “That sounds really hard. What do you need?”

“It’s not about letting go of them. It’s about letting go of control while holding onto connection.” — Nicki Cohen

Motherhood Isn't One Change: How I've Grown With My Kids at Every Age18 Oct 202600:16:57

Send us Fan Mail

We talk about becoming a mom like it happens once, the day your first baby arrives. But I’ve found that every new age and stage changes you all over again. I’ve been becoming a mom over and over for 12 years.

In this episode I share who I was when I first became a mom and who I am now, what each phase has asked of me, how looking back at my own childhood helps me understand my kids, and why I didn’t enjoy every part of it (and why that’s okay).

In this episode:

  • Why becoming a mom isn’t one moment but something that keeps happening
  • What the baby and toddler years, starting school, the friendship years and the pre-teen years have each asked of me
  • Why the newborn phase feels never-ending the first time, and calmer once you know it’s a season
  • Learning to listen instead of rushing to fix things
  • What I’ve noticed as my eldest steps into the teenage years: more privacy, more independence, and more grown-up conversations
  • How my own first day of high school shaped the way I talked to my son about his
  • 3 simple questions to help you understand your child at any age
  • Why you can love your children with your whole heart and still find some phases really hard
  • Why feeling lost again in a new phase isn’t you going backwards

Try this week: 3 questions to ask yourself

  1. What was I like at my child’s age?
  2. What did I need back then from the grown-ups around me?
  3. Can I give my child some of that now?

I’d love to hear what came up for you, so come and tell me on Instagram @itscharliedadia.

Coming up next week
Therapist Nicki Cohen is back to talk about parenting teenagers. She’ll cover how our job as parents doesn’t get less important when our kids become teens, it just changes, and how to let go of some control while holding onto the connection. Nicki works with teenagers and adults, was a mental health lead at a large secondary school, and is a mom to three teenage boys herself.

💛 Back to Me
Back to Me isn’t about going back to who you were before kids. It’s about getting to know who you are now, in the season you’re in. It works whether your youngest is 6 months or 16 years old. It includes the Identity Audit, which you can come back to every time a new phase changes you, and the Regression Rescue Guide for when you feel yourself slipping back into old patterns.

How to Leave an Abusive Relationship (and Rebuild Your Life as a Mom) with Hannah Wrixen11 Oct 202600:58:58

Send us Fan Mail

⚠️ This episode talks about domestic abuse, coercive control and financial abuse. Please listen when you feel ready. If you are in danger right now, call 999.

Hannah Wrixen is back on Chat with Charlie! Last time she joined us, Hannah, a mortgage broker and former mortgage underwriter, talked us through how new parents can get on the property ladder. This time she's sharing something much more personal: how she got out of a mentally and financially abusive relationship with a toddler, and rebuilt her life from scratch.

Hannah met her ex at 19 and had her son Adam at 21. The control started small. "You don't need your own bank account, just use mine." "Why see your friend when you can have a coffee with me?" Slowly she lost her money, her friends and her family, while living in another country with no one around her.

In this conversation, Hannah shares:

  • How financial and emotional control can creep in so quietly you don't see it happening
  • The moment a friend said out loud what Hannah couldn't yet admit
  • How she quietly saved money, and how she got herself and Adam on a plane home
  • Going back to work, claiming benefits, and the help that's available now that wasn't then
  • Getting a court order so Adam could live with her, and how Cafcass and mediation work
  • Being skint, the friend who bought her lunch for weeks, and how that pushed her into a career in mortgages
  • Buying her own home as a single mom through shared ownership
  • Therapy, triggers, learning to trust again, and finding real love
  • Why one chapter of your life doesn't define you, and why there is always a way out

The government's Family Mediation Voucher Scheme can give up to £500 towards mediation about your children. Why You Don't Want Sex After Having a Baby (And What the Mental Load Has to Do With It) - With Becky Crepsley- Fox27 Sep 202600:33:23

Send us Fan Mail

If you've felt like the last thing you want after a long day of parenting is to be touched by your partner — even when you love them, even when nothing's wrong — this episode is for you. I'm joined by Becky, a sexologist and relationship psychotherapist, to talk about what actually happens to desire after having a baby, and why it's so much more about your nervous system and your mental load than it is about your relationship.

About Becky: Sexologist, relationship psychotherapist, and tantra practitioner, with 10 years of experience as a yoga teacher before moving into this work. She sees individuals and couples for issues around sex, sexuality, and relationships, and has created a course specifically on rebuilding intimacy after having a baby.

In this episode:

  • Why "do you want them, or do you want to want them?" is the real starting question
  • Spontaneous vs. responsive desire — and why most women are responsive while media and porn only show spontaneous desire
  • Accelerators and brakes: what actually needs to be in place before desire can show up
  • Why feeling "touched out" is a real safety mechanism, not something wrong with you
  • The nervous system, the mental load, and the "tiger" analogy — why you can't feel sexy while your body still thinks it's in danger
  • The 5-minute breathing exercise that regulates your nervous system (and why it's the actual foundation for everything else)
  • How to talk to your partner about the mental load without it turning into a fight
  • "Simmering": the missing middle layer between being teammates and being sexual, and what it can look like in real life
  • Why temporarily taking sex off the table can bring you closer, not further apart

If someone in your life needs to hear this, please send it their way. And thank you, as always, for listening.

If you are sitting in your car outside the nursery or school gates with tears streaming down your face, take a deep breath.

We spend so much time preparing our children for separation anxiety, but nobody prepares you for the sheer heartbreak of your own. Handing over your baby to someone else never gets easier on your heart, no matter how many times you do it.

In this episode, I share the honest truth about drop-off heartbreak, what actually happens the second you drive away, and why your clingy toddler might just shock you. Plus, a funny story about why my husband is actually weaker at drop-offs than I am!

Reclaiming Your Rhythm once Kids are Back to School06 Sep 202600:15:30

Send us Fan Mail

If you feel like you have just crawled across the summer holidays finish line on your hands and knees, covered in sand, suncream, and snack wrappers, take a deep breath. You are not alone.

Every year we tell ourselves that summer will be slow and magical. But running entertainment, catering, dispute resolution, and schedule management for six solid weeks is mentally and physically exhausting.

In this episode, we talk about what actually happens when the house goes quiet, and why forcing yourself into a rigid, military-grade productivity routine on day one is a recipe for burnout.

Instead of sprinting, let us talk about how to gently reclaim your brain, your breath, your rhythm, and your identity after summer.

In this episode, we cover:

The post-summer hangover and the big lie we tell ourselves on day one

Step 1: The 48-hour decompression buffer (why you need a landing pad, not a sprint)

Step 2: Emptying the 47 open tabs in your brain and setting up simple home rotas

Step 3: Protecting your non-negotiable 15-minute crack of time

Step 4: Putting mom guilt on trial so you can take up space in your own home

The tiny reclaim: your one action step for tomorrow

The First 12 Months of Motherhood: What No One Tells You (And How to Find Yourself Again)23 Aug 202600:16:53

Send us Fan Mail

The first 12 months of motherhood aren't just hard — they're identity-shifting. You can prep the nursery, read all the books, and still feel like a stranger in your own life once baby arrives.

In this episode, I'm walking through the real feelings of that first year. The ones no one warns you about. The grief for who you used to be. The blur of sleepless nights. The way your body, your time, and your entire world change overnight.

And I'm sharing small, gentle ways to start finding yourself again — even in the chaos.

What we cover:

* The overnight shift from "you" to "mum" — and why it's so disorienting

* How time and sleep take on a completely new meaning

* Why your body doesn't feel like yours anymore (and what to do about it)

* The slow shrinking of your world — friendships, spontaneity, sense of self

* Running your entire day around baby's schedule

* Small, doable ways to start reclaiming tiny moments for yourself

Why "Just Ask for Help" Doesn't Work for Moms (And What Actually Does)16 Aug 202600:18:36

Send us Fan Mail

In my recent Instagram poll, the number one answer to "what would make the biggest difference right now?" was help without having to ask for it. And that part hit me. Because it's not really about the help. It's about being the only one who sees, tracks, and assigns everything.

In this episode, I'm sharing the simple systems that finally got me off the mental load hamster wheel, including the car rota that sounds ridiculous but changed my mornings.

In This Episode:

* Why "just ask for help" is actually exhausting (and what's really happening underneath)

* The car rota story that took one tiny question out of my head forever

* How I gave everyone in my house actual responsibilities, not just chores I nag about

* The four-week meal rota that stopped me dreading the "what's for dinner" question

* What real help looks like (hint: it's structural, not dramatic)

* How to start with just one friction point this week

Together they unpack what the mental load actually is (hint: it's not the to-do list), why moms carry it so silently, and practical ways to start letting go without the guilt spiral. From the glass vs rubber ball analogy to the 30% good enough parent rule, this one is full of permission slips.

**What You'll Learn:**

- What the mental load really means (it's not the doing, it's the constant thinking)

- How to figure out which balls you can drop and which ones you can't

- Why your kids and partner are probably more capable than you give them credit for

- The 30% good enough parent rule that will make you exhale

- How to put mom guilt on trial

- Why struggling alone isn't a badge of honour

- Small ways to find time for yourself (even with little ones)

**Resources Mentioned:**

- Back to Me course (includes the "Mom Guilt on Trial" framework and Time Audit

Why do you feel alone in a room full of people? Mom Loneliness Explained05 Jul 202600:10:17

Send us Fan Mail

Ever sat in a room full of people — your kids, your partner, maybe even friends — and still felt completely alone?

In this episode, I'm talking about the kind of loneliness no one prepares you for. The kind that has nothing to do with how many people are around you, and everything to do with how disconnected you feel from yourself.

I'm sharing my own story of losing my sense of identity after becoming a mom, why friendships feel so different now, and what I've learnt after five babies about where that loneliness really comes from.

In This Episode:

* Why you can be touched all day and still feel unseen

* My experience of "disappearing" from my old life after having my first baby

* Why friendships shift after kids (and why that's okay)

* The real root of mom loneliness — and it's not what you think

* One small shift that helps you start reconnecting with yourself

Why You Still Feel Lost After 3 Kids (And What to Do About It)28 Jun 202600:12:21

Send us Fan Mail

Had two, three, maybe four kids and thought you'd have it figured out by now? This episode is your permission slip to stop pretending.

In this episode, I'm getting honest about why more kids often means more chaos, not more confidence — and what it actually looks like to start finding yourself again when your schedule is bursting and you've got zero hours that belong to you.

What we cover:

* Why experience doesn't automatically mean you've got it together

* The myth that motherhood should get easier with practice (and why that voice is lying to you)

* How every child brings a completely new identity shift — and why we never give ourselves space to process it

* The moment in my kitchen that broke me open (and woke me up)

* Tiny reclamations: how I started building myself back in without spa days or solo trips

* How to put your mum guilt on trial and separate real guilt from noise

This episode is for you if:

* You've had multiple kids and feel more lost than ever

* You're wondering when you'll finally feel like yourself again

* You're tired of advice that doesn't fit your real life

* You're ready to stop waiting for "when things calm down"

Natural Birth Recovery: What No One Tells You About Healing (Physically & Emotionally)31 May 202600:20:59

Send us Fan Mail

Just because you didn't have surgery doesn't mean your body didn't go through something massive. In this episode, Charlie shares her honest experience recovering from her first natural birth — and why the "you should be fine" narrative is harmful.

In this episode, you'll learn:

* Why natural birth still requires serious recovery (and why the "hierarchy of birth" is a myth)

* What's actually normal in postpartum recovery — bleeding, soreness, hormones, and the emotional weight no one warns you about

* The 4 biggest recovery mistakes Charlie made (so you don't have to)

* What actually helps: rest, support, and giving yourself permission to struggle

* The identity shift no one talks about — grieving your old self while loving your new life

Key takeaways:

* Your body grew a human for 9 months, shifted organs, expanded your pelvis, and pushed out a baby — that is not nothing

* You're allowed to say no to visitors, ask for help, and not feel okay

* Recovery isn't just physical — it's about your whole identity shifting, and that takes way more than 6 weeks

You can love being a mum and still need space to breathe.

Not the aggressive, wall-building kind. The gentle, honest, "this is what I need" kind.

If you've ever said yes when you meant no, let someone hold your baby when every fibre of you wanted to say "not right now," or answered the door to visitors when you hadn't eaten all day — this one's for you
