S. and provided a very special home for thousands of children until its closing in 1944. It is said that it set the bar for being one of the best. Carol tells the story of her mother, only 4 at the time, and her siblings growing up in that orphanage after her grandfather died at the age of 32. He worked in a zinc mine in Tennessee and contracted black lung disease, leaving his wife a widow with 5 children. His father's relatives turned her over to the authorities, accusing her of abandonment and neglect. She was sentenced to prison.
