The duo is back. Enjoy listening to Dwayne and Mal talking about recent race results from the local legend of Aotearoa, Ruth Croft.

We also discussed updates on training, our ideas on being fit versus fast, Dwaynes neck chafing, expectations of our current fitness, and Whangarei Half.

Share, make a comment, flick us a question. We want it all.

Lots of love.

2| Tamsin Horne03 Sep 202501:07:37

Kia ora -

Second episode is here!!! No Dwayne this time, your lucky ears just to get listen your friendly American Mal Pal. I am interviewing my speedy triathlon friend, Tamsin Horne. She is currently training for Kona Ironman.

We discuss the love of our communities, how to keep getting after it in training, balancing being a mom and athlete and business owner, the frustrations of post seizure depression, the challenges Tamsin faces not being able to drive, and to just keep taking 1 step, 2 steps, and 1,000 steps.

I feel fortunate to have this interview with her. She is an inspiration and could basically be the female version of David Goggins.

I hope you enjoy this listen. Please like and subscribe to us. 👍

1 | Running is the new tinder 29 Aug 202500:42:06

Welcome, haere mai to our very first episode of Chafing the Dream!

We’re a running couple—an American gal and a Kiwi bloke—who love talking all things running. Today we dive into some of our fav races, gels, gear, and a very brief synopsis of our story.

If you are someone that experiences chafing, lolly toes, vomitting gels, race shits, and bloody nipples then you are in the right place.

46| Upcoming events: Vert-July, Chafing Coin Collection, Comrades Speaker, Run the Forest Kaitaia Giveaway and more.23 Jun 202600:51:59

Haere mai- plenty of links to click on in the Spotify Shownotes so go to candy town.

Welcome to a jam-packed episode of local events and challenges. We start with our thoughts and the upcoming speaker, Bruce Fordyce regarding Comrades Ultramarathon. The world's oldest and longest ultramarathon. Next year will be there 100th year! Come check out Bruce's talk hosted by Masters on the Move. It is on 14th August at 6pm in Tikipunga Sports Park. Sign up here.

Next we talk about our training updates. The usual saga's of the duo. We move into the VERT JULY. This is hosted by TrailRunningNZ. Super cool event. Every day for the month of July you run 100m vert per day adding each day with another 100m. So 2nd July = 200m, 3rd July -300m and so forth.

For our RUN THE FOREST giveaway tickets we have tied it into the VERT JULY. We want you, our listeners, to guess how many days Dwayne will last on the Vert July. The two closest winners will get free tickets from SportNorthland to choose any distance from Run the Forest. For the giveaway send us via email (chafingthedreamnz@gmail.com) your name and number of days you are guessing Dwayne will win. (e.g., Mallory, 3 days for Dwayne). Good luck guessers!

We talk about Denika Clooney smashing our New Zealand races and her recent signing with Elon University. A speedy kiwi gal indeed.

We close talking about our upcoming event = Chasing the Coins. Details listed below:

Date: 22nd August

Time:  Debriefing at 1:45PM, race starts at 2 PM

Location: Clock Museum, Whangarei Town Basin

Teams and format: Each team will have 4 runners, you must have two women and two men. The teams will race to 6 locations around Whangarei. At debriefing you will be given a map and the 6 coin locations. You can divide and conquer however you like. For example, one runner can collect 2 coins from 2 different locations. Once your team has returned all 7 coins to Mal and Dwayne you have completed the event!! Yay!

How to Register: Send your team name, team member’s names, contact details  (name + phone numbers) to chafingthedreamnz@gmail.com

Prizes: We will have plenty of exciting local prizes and runner related goodies up for grabs… like free burgers from BurgerFuel!! Who doesn’t love the Bastard.

Why we created it: We created this event because we love the idea of a fun competition with teams that brings people together. But you don’t have to be the fastest team to win prizes. We look forward to bringing all you chafers together.

45| Training Partner #216 Jun 202601:00:39

Kia ora

You read that right. Mal has been knocked up with round #2. Dwayne's newest training partner, baby #2 will be arriving in December 2026. Mal asks Dwayne questions of how he feels when he found out we were pregnant, what has surprised him the most this pregnancy, if there are any goals before baby comes (hint hint Mal tries to convince him to do a 100k....we will see). We make a laugh out of a few topics and are excited to have Mal give better training updates. Come along for the usual banter and laughter. We seriously love all our listeners and all the comments we get.

Any mailbag questions or comments send to our email at chafingthedreamnz@gmail.com and/or send us a DM on our instagram.

36| Ring of Fire Diaries with Bradley Houghton and Katie White14 Apr 202601:03:43

Kia ora

Welcome to another episode . Wowza are we lucky! We got to have two legends, Katie White and Bradley Houghton give us their voice diaries to close out our Ring of Fire series. Before digging into the diaries we talk about 3 upcoming races:

- Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon and Trail Race

- Run the Bays

- King's Backyard

It was honestly so nice and fun following along with their training and then hear their reflections of Ring of Fire . Very impressive on both ends!

Bradley Houghton was our first diary singer. He shares the highs, the lows, what he would change with his training, and his usual entertaining insights. You can read Bradley's newsletter here called Trail Running NZ. It is a laugh and off. All for FREE 99.

We close our diaries with Katie White. It was so cool to hear how the race played out for her. Also really sweet to hear her girls made it out to one of the aid stations and to see her at the Finish Line.

Episode 34 welcomes the golden boy of Northland trail running, Sam Rout!

Sam is one of a kind. He seems to know everyone in this town and will run with anyone but yet is also the speediest northlander and currently 3rd podium spot at TUM 50k this year.

Dwayne and Mal dig into Sam's training, set backs with his recent knee injury, and exciting upcoming races. We also have some good laughs about his start line at Huanui Race.

We are so lucky to have them on and sharing their insights :) Thank you Katie, Bradley, and Mike for taking the time to drop us some voice memos.

31| Nathan's FND experience & Bree's recovery post concussion 10 Mar 202601:00:18

Yoooooo

What another secret special episode with our Muscle Mania crew Bree Monaghan "Baby Bagel" and Nathan Ryken "The Viking". Dwayne and Mal were lucky enough to sit down with the two of them and talk about recovery.

We start opening about how training has been for all four of us and our newest goalzzzz to create a triathlon team. Boys vs. Girls!

We then get straight into asking Nathan about how he got his diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder . What his training is looking like currently and how he has shifted his goals.

We switch to discussing Bree's recovery from her concussion in August. She seems to have been doing very well making a full recovery from the concussion with no post head injury symptoms.

Finally we make sure our listeners know about our code "chafingthedream" for 20% off the upcoming Beach to Basin race and Parihaka half marathon. Both our local events supporting Sport Northland. You can sign up here for Beach to Basin.

29| Osteopenia and Beach to Basin giveaway 24 Feb 202600:42:16

Haere mai

Welcome to another episode, this one exclusively with Dwayne and Mal. We start the episode talking about our training updates and the usual realities of having a toddler who is sick, meaning sleepless nights blah blah blah.

Dwayne also spends some time exploring alternative nutrition options for his cheap as chips budget.

Mal discusses her recent letter from her Sports Doctor regarding osteopenia. We discuss briefly breastfeeding amenorrhea (no this is not diahhrea...) which means when a breastfeeding mother does not menstruate while breastfeeding. This then results an increase in bone injury! Hence what happened to Mal over the past year and a half.

We close with two free entry give aways to our local Beach to Basin on the 15th March 2026 in Whangarei, NZ. Please enter our giveaway by either posting on your instagram story a photo of you running and tag us @chafingthedreamnz. Or by commenting below on Spotify.

27| Sam Rout + Tarawera 50k preview09 Feb 202600:42:49

Haere mai

Episode 27 is here and get ready for some rambling. The first 15 minutes is Dwayne and Mal discussing our thoughts on shoe sponsors, money in trail running (or lack thereof ), and other random bits and bobs.

Dwayne was lucky enough to snag a quick pre-race interview from Sam Rout, ranked 3rd currently for the 50k at Tarawera but more importantly our local northland rep. We are stoked to have him race in Rotovegas and already know he will smash it. Boys a beast, especially on dem hills.

After the interview we review the top athletes for the 50k race of Tarawera for male and female race. Dwayne will be down in Rotovegas this weekend trying to support our local legend, Sam Rout as well as get some short clips of the athletes.

Happy trails y'all and keep chafing your dreamzzzz.

Mal and Dwayne

44| Alex "Dark Horse" Nicholson and his Kings experience09 Jun 202601:31:45

Kia ora

What an episode. Dwayne and Mal were two lucky dogs to sit alongside the Dark Horse, Mr. Alex Nicholson. The Local Legend of the Backyard Kings Ultra 2026 in Whangarei ,NZ running 38 laps. He was a hoot. We spent time talking about his upbringing and why he leaned into running in his later years. Turns out it was often peer pressure by his friends. So if you are training for a marathon or an ultra alone, just don't. Ask your friend who has never done one! His stories were a crack up and he is the most genuine person. We loved hearing about how firefighting has impacted his running career.

We truly had lots of laughs and inspiring moments talking to him about the Kings Backyard Ultra experience. We can't wait to see how Alex does at the Northland 100.

We also close our episode talking about TrailRunningNZ Vert Challenge in July. This challenge is wild. Every day in July you run more and more vert. So for the first week your first day is 100m vert, Tuesday is 200m vert, Wednesday 300m vert, and so on. By the first week you would have ran 2,800meters. Each day in the month of July you keep adding 100m. Basically.... read Bradleys email but you know you are going to get sweet prizes even if you just participate in it! Give him a follow on the gram.

Keep chafing your dream. Byyyyyye

26| Ring of Fire Training Diaries 03 Feb 202600:47:09

Haere mai

Welcome to Chafing the dream with the kiwi American running couple duo. This episode we have a little fun with 3 folks freaky enough to enter Ring of Fire 100k. We were able to sneak off some voice diaries of their latest training.

The first RoF soul is Mike Lea (listen to a full interview with this fella on Episode 19). He was a previous professional mountain biker turned to domination of the trails. He gives us insight in types of training runs he has been doing and how he is feeling about the race. You can follow him on the gram here.

Our second RoF voice diary is Katie White. You can follow her on the gram here. She updates us on what it's like to train for the Ring of Fire on North Shore. She is trained by Simon Cochrane and shares her confidence going into RoF. She has an impressive previous year resume winning the Northland 100 in the 50k and second place finish at Taupo 100k.

Our final RoF nutter flutter is Bradley Houghton. You can follow along with him on his instagram page. Oh Bradley. He sounds as prepared for this race as a fly stuck in a freezer. Just kidding, we are stoked for him. He gives us his honest take on his training and that he isn't planning on slaying dragons out there BUT he does slay dragons on your email inbox every Monday morning. So do subscribe to his weekly newsletter here.

Well, well, well what do you know. Dan has graduated from accountability assholes. Dan has ran 7 parkruns and we have made a consecutive decision to end harassing him on this pod. Let us know if we need to hold anyone else accountable and be assholes about it.

Thanks for the listen.

25| Running Goals + Osteopenia + 10k Training 27 Jan 202600:43:24

Kia ora

What an episode. Hammered it all in less than an hour.

We update the listeners on Dwaynes running goals in 2026, will he chose another year of chasing ultras? Will he say that "I will never do another ultra again?" Of course he will. Mal shares her running goals for 2026, or lack thereof.

We talk about our local Beach to Basin race in Whangarei, New Zealand and how to train for a 10k race. We talk training workouts like tempos, progression runs, and track sessions.

There was a mailbag question about blisters on the heel and Dwayne shares lovely advice around basically returning the shoes.

Finally we share Mal's results from her Bone DEXA scan and discuss osteopenia and the ongoing angst she has of reoccurring bone stress injuries.

Comment, like us, subscribe to us.

Episode every Wednesday at 5am.

Lastly but most importantly we sit down with Bree Monaghan to ask her about what it takes to train for and compete in the world duathlon champs in Spain, how she qualified for the champs. 18| Kepler Highlights09 Dec 202500:53:55

Denika's World Cross Country Trip

This week we cover the usuals plus we try something new. We'll talk about our recent training and how it's going plus our upcoming holiday to the big USA.

Then we have some voice memos from a few people who were at Kepler this weekend. Including Frances Redmond, Hannah Wall, Dan Jones, and the mighty Emma Steedman. Who all talk about their experiences racing.

That's not the only race we talk about though, California International Marathon was also this past weekend and Mal waxes poetic about her times racing there, how many people ran the an USA Olympic Trails qualifying time. Plus Courtney Dauwalter was there giving it a good nudge.

Lastly we don't have to be the arseholes in the Accountability Arseholes segment as Craig and Shana have been diligently

doing their rehab. And Dan, well, he gets a pass this week.

Thanks for the listen and thanks for the folks willing to send voice memos!!

Denika's Give A Little

In this episode Mal and Dwayne give an update on their training, and then get into talking about Danika's up coming trip to the big USA, where she'll be competing in the U20 World Cross Country Champs in Florida.

Denika was cool enough to even send us a voice memo on her up coming trip and how she qualified for this event. Hint! Hint! It was by running some kick ass speedy 5Km events on the road.

We hope you can give a little to help get her there!

Also in the episode, some mailbag questions on keeping your bladders and soft flasks clean. And the theories around recovery between intervals and the difference between a rest, easy jog or a float between reps.

Lastly it's time to hold some people accountable in the Accountability Assholes segment.

We hope you enjoy the episode and keep chafing the dream!

43| Kings Backyard Ultra Feelz 02 Jun 202600:49:50

Kia ora

Welcome to another Chafing the Dream episode where plenty of chafing happened this weekend at the Kings Backyard Ultra. There was New Zealand records broken at the 24 hour mark with the most runners still standing at 16! There were also 3 newbies still standing at that 24 hour mark. The last man standing was the previous 2024 winner Anthony Kerr-Taylor and the last female standing was the ultra a day Shannon Leigh-Litt. We couldn't help but share some our favourite stories like Roberta representing Lithuania for her satellite team, Alex Nicholson our favourite local firefighter, and Emma's heart breaking DSQ.

Mal was lucky enough to be on the mic most of Sunday, after the 100-miles or 24 hour/lap mark. She was able to see and get emotional with the stories runners shared. Dwayne and Mal discussed the winners of Kings, the rationale behind the disqualifiers and the weather. Because running races can never not bring up the weather.

We also did a brief run down of our training, lactate threshold testing, and our upcoming event.

Thanks as always for the listen.

Keep chafing your dreams. Byyyyyyyyyeeeee

11| Running with Type 1 Diabetes21 Oct 202501:17:00

This episode, Dwayne and Mal are honoured to be joined by our good friend Hannah Thompson.

Hannah was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in her late 20s. She opens up about the early symptoms that led to her diagnosis, waking up with the loss of her vision, and the adjustments she’s made to live and run with Type 1.

Hannah shares what’s worked for her in managing blood sugars as a runner, some of her scariest moments with diabetes, and how others can better support someone living with Type 1.

Hannah previously a competitive swimmer specialising in the butterfly. Her running CV is completing the Bay of Islands 50k Ultra, 75km in King’s Backyard, and four marathons, with a personal best of 3 hours and 28 minutes.

She speaks candidly about the mental and physical struggles of training and racing with a chronic condition at times thinking, “I’d rather die than not finish this race” while also acknowledging the challenges of getting to the start line.

Thanks Han for your vulnerability.

Enjoy the listen y'all.

10| The Taupo Tantrum 14 Oct 202500:47:29

Dwayne spends this episode to reflect on his A race of the year, Taupo Ultra. With the original plan to be racing the 100k he switches to the 50k race. However, he was quite disappointed by his results and how the race played out. This episode you can hear his tantrum unfold. Apparently he will never be doing an ultra again.

Enjoy the listen, comment on questions or uplifting ideas for runners that don't get to experience the post race buzz that so many look forward to.
