China and the United States have maintained steady progress in anti-drug cooperation, with both sides continuing to expand practical collaboration in key areas, a senior Chinese narcotics control official said on Wednesday.
Wei Xiaojun, executive deputy director of the Office of China National Narcotics Control Commission and head of the Ministry of Public Security's narcotics control bureau, made the remarks as the nation further strengthened its drug governance and chemical control by placing 16 additional non-medicinal narcotic and psychotropic substances under control.
Wei noted that China and the US have deepened cooperation across substance scheduling, chemical control, intelligence sharing, joint investigations, online information cleanup, fugitive repatriation, anti-money laundering and drug testing technologies.
China has maintained regular communication with relevant US government departments, including the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, to exchange updates and discuss priorities, Wei said.
Chinese law enforcement agencies have also worked on joint cases and the repatriation of drug-related fugitives with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he added.
In February, police in Tianjin arrested a suspect, surnamed Gong, in a drug-related case based on information provided by US authorities. Prior to that, a US citizen suspected of involvement in the same case was arrested by US law enforcement agencies from the state of Georgia.
Wei emphasized that drug control cooperation is a global mandate, and it should be based on mutual respect and trust. "As long as China and the US work together, they can effectively address drug-related challenges, which will benefit both peoples and the world," he said.
China remains committed to maintaining the positive momentum of Sino-US antidrug cooperation, which is a hard-won achievement and requires sustained joint efforts, he added.
According to Wei, China has actively responded to the diversion of nonscheduled chemicals into illicit drug production channels in North America.
Starting on July 1, a total of 16 substances will be added to the catalogue of nonmedical narcotic and psychotropic substances, China's national drug regulator announced on Wednesday.
This will place 412 types of non-medicinal narcotic and psychotropic drugs, as well as the entire categories of fentanyl-related substances, synthetic cannabinoids and nitazene-related substances under control.
To strengthen risk prevention, China issued warning notices twice — in November 2025 and May this year — urging compliance with relevant laws. Customs and postal authorities reinforced export supervision, risk analysis and inspection procedures.
Wei said authorities have also carried out nationwide crackdowns on the illegal trafficking of precursor chemicals and new psychoactive substances, and strengthened industry self-regulation.
Chemical control remains a key upstream measure in China's drug control strategy, he said. In 2025, authorities seized 550.6 metric tons of drug-related precursor chemicals. China has also published a white paper on fentanyl-related substance control and expanded its regulatory system.
Wei said that China's drug situation remains generally stable, but new challenges are emerging as trafficking becomes more organized, substance abuse more diversified and users younger. He warned that loophole exploitation, gray-area substances and emerging addictive compounds are increasing regulatory complexity.
According to the 2025 China Drug Situation Report, which was released on Wednesday, Chinese authorities solved 27,000 drug-related cases and arrested 41,000 suspects last year, down 27.6 percent and 33 percent year-on-year, respectively. They also seized 33.5 tons of drugs, up 25.4 percent, and handled 134,000 drug users, down 30.3 percent.
The report noted a rise in abuse of nonscheduled addictive substances. In 2025, authorities seized nearly 1.27 million liters of nitrous oxide, up 84 percent year-on-year, and 9.3 tons of other substances, an increase of more than 17-fold.
China's State Council Information Office on Wednesday released a white paper titled "More Just and Equitable Global Governance: China's Principles, Proposals and Actions" (full text).
The white paper was published to introduce China's principles, proposals and actions on global governance, foster broader consensus within the international community, ensure more effective responses to global challenges, and build a more just and equitable global governance system.
Global governance is a common endeavor that bears on the well-being of all humanity, and building a just and equitable global governance system is a shared vision long pursued by people from across the world, the white paper said, adding that China has always been an active participant in, contributor to, and builder of global governance.
In the new era, President Xi Jinping put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. In promoting a global governance system characterized by extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, he has called for true multilateralism to foster an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, according to the white paper.
In 2025, Xi proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), which is designed to offer a Chinese solution to the two pressing questions of the era: what kind of global governance system should be established, and how global governance can be reformed and improved.
Upon its introduction, the GGI swiftly gained support from nearly 160 countries and international organizations, with over 60 countries joining the Group of Friends of Global Governance. The international community believes that the GGI sends a clear signal: uphold multilateralism, unite forces, and pursue a fair future, the white paper said.

Episode 8
Tuesday, June 16, 2026 • Duration 04:50
The China Meteorological Administration raised its major meteorological disaster emergency response on Monday morning, escalating it from level four, the lowest, to level three, and expanding the alert to cover both torrential rain and severe convective weather.
Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center has renewed a blue alert for severe convective weather, the lowest level of its three-tier warning system, adding that powerful thunderstorms, hail and torrential downpours will sweep across large parts of the country.
The center said that from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms accompanied by gale-force winds above level 8, equivalent to gusts of at least 62 kilometers per hour, or hail are likely to hit some areas of central and eastern parts of North China and the southern part of South China.
In some areas of Hebei province, Beijing and Tianjin, winds will be even stronger, with gusts exceeding level 10, meaning speeds of more than 88 km/h.
Meanwhile, intense bursts of short-duration heavy rain are forecast for central and southern parts of Northeast China, central and eastern parts of North China, central and southern parts of South China and southern part of Southwest China.

Episode 9
Monday, June 15, 2026 • Duration 05:39
The Pentagon's decision to add multiple Chinese companies — including e-commerce giant Alibaba, search engine Baidu and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD — to its updated Section 1260H list of alleged "Chinese military companies" is a groundless suppression of Chinese enterprises that severely harms their legitimate rights and interests.
The misleading designation mainly restricts Pentagon procurement and serves as a warning signal to investors and government agencies. The US administration is using the list to target China's technology companies by means of weaponized trade restrictions.
As a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said on Saturday in a statement on the US Department of Defense's decision, the US side has ignored the consensus reached during the meeting between the heads of state of the two countries in Beijing, disregarded the overall interests of bilateral economic and trade relations, continuously generalized the concept of "national security" and abused state power to unjustifiably suppress Chinese enterprises.
The Pentagon's list now extends far beyond enterprises traditionally associated with weapons production and increasingly encompasses sectors that sit at the center of the global digital economy and high-tech innovation.
In the eyes of the US administration, technologies once regarded as commercial — semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, batteries, robotics and advanced manufacturing — have become strategic assets with military implications. The distinction between civilian and military technology is fading. This shines a light on the US administration's reliance on sanctions as a sop for the US' growing anxiety about the loss of its competitiveness in advanced technology.
The US administration's increasingly expansive use of "security" instruments targeting Chinese companies suggests a superpower grappling with the uncomfortable reality that the US' technological leadership can no longer be taken for granted. So the Pentagon's latest action can be interpreted as part of a broader strategy aimed at "decoupling" from China's supply chains and weakening its high-tech competitiveness.
Episode 10
Monday, June 15, 2026 • Duration 05:13
The critical importance of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation was underscored at the 18th Straits Forum in Xiamen, Fujian province, as participants from both sides of the Taiwan Strait gathered over the weekend, overcoming obstructions from island authorities.
The annual forum, which started in 2009, serves as a platform to promote mutual understanding and integration between the mainland and Taiwan, emphasizing the shared cultural and economic interests binding both sides.
Addressing the main conference on Saturday, Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, called for resolute opposition to "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external interference, urging joint efforts to advance peaceful cross-Strait relations and national reunification.
He emphasized that the mainland stands ready to share development opportunities with Taiwan compatriots, noting that the country's blueprint for the ongoing 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period will open up broader space for cross-Strait integration.
At a meeting on Saturday on advancing the development of the demonstration zone for integrated development across the Taiwan Strait, Wang urged greater progress in advancing such integration during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
He called for supporting Fujian in exploring new mechanisms, pathways and models for cross-Strait integrated development. He also urged closer people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Under the theme of expanding people-to-people exchanges, this year's Straits Forum featured 58 diverse events covering grassroots, youth, cultural and economic exchange sectors.
The GGI aligns with the growing trend towards greater democracy in international relations and bolsters international confidence in practicing multilateralism. It offers a clear and feasible roadmap for improving global governance, bringing valuable stability and positive energy to a turbulent world, according to the white paper.
China has proposed the GGI to expedite the building of a more just and equitable global governance system. Resolutely upholding the UN's authority and status is fundamental to the effective implementation of this initiative, the white paper said.
Success will also hinge on major countries bearing a sense of responsibility, and on all nations uniting and cooperating to address deficits in peace and development. All countries should firmly uphold the international system with the UN at its core, safeguard the international order based on international law, and uphold the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, instead of reinventing the wheel, according to the white paper.
Apart from the preface and conclusion, the white paper has five parts: "The World Today Faces Severe and Complex Challenges", "The Global Governance Initiative Responds to Challenges of Our Times", "China's Contribution to Promoting Global Governance", "Guiding the Direction of Change Towards a Bright Future", and "Moving Forward Hand in Hand at a Critical Juncture in History".
Since the outbreak of the conflict, China has maintained contact with all relevant parties and actively worked to stop the fighting and promote peace, Wang said.
From the very beginning, China has firmly supported Pakistan's efforts and stressed to all parties that Pakistan is a trustworthy mediator, while also engaging separately with Iran and the US in its own way, he added.
Compared with the first stage, he said that the second stage of negotiations can be expected to face greater difficulties.
Wang called on the international community to provide further support for Iran-US negotiations and urged multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to play a greater role.
China has consistently advocated that regional countries should take their future and destiny into their own hands, Wang said. He expressed the hope to explore, through dialogue and consultation, a peace and security architecture that is jointly participated in by all countries in the Middle East.
However, the World Cup has also exposed the limitations of current AI models when it comes to analyzing and predicting the results of sporting events.
For example, before the Group C opener between Brazil and Morocco on Sunday, major LLMs made predictions in favor of Brazil based on both historical data and statistical indicators.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Guo said that while AI can analyze historical data and statistical models, it still struggles to accurately predict real-world results, especially in sports.
He pointed out that soccer matches are influenced by a wide range of factors in the physical world, and such variables are highly uncertain and difficult to quantify using fixed AI models, making precise predictions inherently challenging.
The limitations of current AI models were also highlighted by Wang Zhongyuan, president of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, at this year's BAAI Conference held last week.
Wang said that while LLMs have become increasingly capable of solving problems in the digital world, many challenges in the physical world remain beyond their reach.
As a result, the next stage of AI development will gradually shift from "predicting the next token" to "predicting the next physical state", he added.
Asked why tech companies are rolling out AI prediction features for sports when the accuracy rate is relatively low, Guo, the expert from the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, said the trend partly reflects the growing pressure of competition across the industry.
"As competition in the LLM market intensifies, technological differentiation is becoming increasingly difficult. Companies are eagerly seeking new channels to distinguish themselves from their rivals," he said.
As the AI technology matures, simply competing on the size parameter is not enough, Guo said.
"The market is paying less attention to how large a model is and more attention to whether it can deliver valuable services in real-world scenarios and solve practical problems for users," he added.
Hu Yanping, a professor at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, said that LLMs and AI agents are already evolving from conversation-oriented systems into task-oriented systems, while moving beyond pretraining toward continuous learning and broader real-world perception.
"Exploratory projects, such as World Cup match predictions, can help accelerate this evolution," Hu said.
"A capability framework built around perception, interaction, decision-making and collaboration is what future task-oriented AI agents need."
A technological system for cultural heritage monitoring featuring space-air-ground coordination will be gradually established, providing solid scientific and technological support for the high-quality development of the cultural heritage sector in China, according to the administration.
The center said that from Monday through Wednesday, heavy to violent rainfall is expected to hit most parts of Guangdong and Guangxi, central and southern parts of Fujian province, the southern part of Jiangxi province, western and eastern parts of Yunnan province, the southern part of Sichuan province and the southwestern part of Guizhou province, with some areas likely to be hit by severe rainstorms.
Coastal areas of southern China will experience localized heavy downpours of extreme intensity.
The eastern part of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Northeast China, North China, and the eastern part of the Yellow-Huaihe River Valley are expected to experience scattered showers or thundershowers, with localized heavy rain or storms, along with short-duration heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and other severe convective weather.
Sun Qianqian, a meteorological analyst at Weather China, a website affiliated with the CMA, said the main reason for so much rainfall recently in Northeast and North China is the frequent eastward movement of upper-level troughs and cold vortices.
"These systems continuously guide cold air southward to collide with warm and moist airflows, bringing frequent rainfall and severe convective weather," she said.
The alerts followed days of exceptional rain that have already saturated parts of Guangdong and Guangxi where over 600 mm of rainfall has been recorded.
Heavy to torrential rain, with local extreme downpours, has hit northern Guangdong, the northern Pearl River Delta, and eastern coastal areas since Friday.

In practice, the US move is forcing the formation of parallel technological systems. In doing so, it is seriously disrupting the international economic and trade order, undermining the stability of global industry and supply chains, and dramatically increasing the operating costs of the world economy and global trade.
The outcomes achieved by China and the US under mechanisms such as bilateral economic and trade consultations should also be understood and assessed within this broader context of the cumulative effect of the US administration's export controls, investment restrictions, entity listings and military-company designation.
The danger is that the US side is forcing China-US economic relations to become trapped in a self-reinforcing cycle. Washington always sees "security threats" and imposes restrictions. That leaves Beijing no choice but to take corresponding countermeasures.
China urges the US side to stop its wrong practices, revoke the relevant measures, return to the right track of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, and provide fair, just and nondiscriminatory treatment to Chinese companies, said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce of China.
Otherwise, China will take resolute and strong countermeasures, and all consequences and responsibilities arising therefrom shall be borne by the US side, the spokesperson added.
Neither the trend of economic globalization nor the laws of the market will allow the US to use political force to impose parallel technological systems on the world without causing significant harm — both globally and to itself. The global economy remains deeply intertwined, and the technologies of the future depend on complex international supply chains that stretch from Silicon Valley to Shenzhen.
If the US president's first visit to China in nine years last month was intended to stabilize relations, the Pentagon's latest move does the opposite. While the Chinese side has made clear its willingness to steady bilateral ties through cooperation and exchanges, the US side seems intent on demonstrating its readiness to further embed what it sees as Sino-US strategic competition in commerce, technology and finance.
And once "national security" becomes the organizing principle of economic policy, every company risks being used as a soldier. The Pentagon's latest blacklist suggests that such a future might already have arrived.

Earlier, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities elevated restrictions by banning island officials from attending the event, marking the first time the island's grassroots officials were blocked from participation.
Addressing the forum despite these bans, Chang Jung-kung, vice-chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang party, said that despite twists and turns, the Straits Forum has always been committed to promoting exchanges and playing a critical role in cross-Strait relations.
During the forum, mainland enterprises signed agreements with various businesses and trade associations from Taiwan, buying signature agricultural goods including atemoya and pomelos, as well as tea and fishery products from counties such as Taitung, Yunlin and Nantou.
The contracts serve as a major step forward in implementing the 10 follow-up exchange policies introduced following the landmark cross-Strait meeting between leaders of the CPC and KMT in April, focusing on the practical livelihood needs of grassroots families and small business operators.
Yao Ching-ling, magistrate of Taitung county, said via a live video link that the purchase agreements were an immense encouragement to local farmers. "Agricultural and fishery products carry the core livelihoods of countless Taiwan families," she said.
A range of prominent figures and grassroots representatives also stepped onto the stage during the conference to share their stories of cross-Strait integration.
Su Heng, a Taiwan political commentary vlogger, said grassroots perspectives and livelihood statistics best reflect the truth that artificial barriers can never block the shared enthusiasm of compatriots from both sides.
A massive number of Taiwan residents still crossed the Strait for markets, business cooperation and career opportunities, Su added.
Lai Tsai-ta, co-founder and CEO of artificial intelligence pharmaceutical startup Metis TechBio Co, shared his journey on the mainland since 2019. Backed by over 10 million yuan ($1.48 million) in subsidies and startup services in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, his company grew into a recognized unicorn before listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in May.
"The mainland offers sincere hospitality, strong policy backup, and a welcoming environment," Lai said, encouraging Taiwan youth to combine their professional skills with local industrial advantages to find their own perfect stage.
