The US doesn’t experience much terrorism, we’ve had several attacks on US soil, but for the most part, we’ve had far less than other countries experience. In modern day terrorist attacks, the goal is to spread fear by directing violence against innocent victims. These attacks can be initiated by a government, a radical group, liberationists or “freedom fighters”. For hundreds of years before Germ Theory was discovered, people were trying to find an explanation for the plagues and pestilence that followed them. As millions succumbed to the Black Plague, leprosy, rabies, and tuberculosis, there was no rhyme or reason for the death and destruction. They didn’t understand bacteria, viruses or parasites. Let’s begin with etiology and pathology. This will be a new pathogen for us. Myxobolus cerebralis is a myxozoan parasite. Whirling disease is caused by the actinosporean spores of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. This parasite has a complex two-host lifecycle. I thought that since we talked about White Nose Disease in bats last time, we could just hop on over to Frog Fungal Disease this time. There is nothing like going to the river in spring. The frogs are sending their mating calls back and forth. The males are trying to sing their best songs to attract females, and they’re measuring up the other males to see if they really want to battle for the female they’ve chosen. Frogs are both a keystone species and an indicator species in their environments. Keystone species are vital to their environments. If we lose a keystone species, the entire ecosystem will fail. Frogs provide food for several species including birds, fish, monkeys and snakes. As tadpoles, they eat algae which helps regulate blooms and reduce the risk of algal contamination. As they metamorphose from tadpoles into frogs, they become more carnivorous, and this means that they eat a lot of bugs. They can eat up to 100 insects in a day. O.K., so not quite as impressive as the bat, but still, that’s a lot of bugs. The larger the frog, the larger the prey. Some species can eat animals as big as snakes and birds. So, maybe you didn’t want to hear that part, but it does show that frogs are an important part of the food chain as predator and prey. Frogs are also an indicator species. It’s a terrible disease that has killed off about 90% of some species of bats in North America. If you haven’t listened to the last episode, I suggest that you go back and give that one a listen before we start this one. It gives a pretty good overview of the importance of bats to several ecosystems and to people. If you have listened to that episode, then you already know how invaluable this order is. Without them, we wouldn’t have several species of plants, nor would we have many vaccines, we may not have echolocation technology. Bats have given us so much. Now, we need to think about what we can do for them. Let’s begin with the etiology and pathology of White Nose Syndrome. White Nose Syndrome is caused by a pathogenic fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructans that was formerly known as Geomyces destructans. After close study, the fungus was reclassified because it more closely resembles other fungi from the Pseudeurotiaceae family. P. destructans is a psychrophilic, or cold-loving, fungus that forms asymmetrically curved conidia. Bats are the base of several ecosystems and without them those ecosystems would fail, and with them, several food sources would also fail, but bats also carry some of the most deadly diseases known to mankind. Rabbits, hares and pikas belong to a family of animals called “Lagomorphs” or order Lagomorpha. Rabbits and hares belong to the family Leporidae and pikas belong to the family Ochotonidae. While rabbits and hares have long ears, a short tail and very strong hind limbs that give them that characteristic bounding motion, pikas are smaller, have shorter, rounded ears, no external tail to speak of and smaller hind limbs that give them more of a scampering motion. Lagomorphs are small to medium-sized herbivores that tend to live underground. At one time, they were included in the Order Rodentia since both orders possess a set of incisors that grow throughout their lives. However, lagomorphs also have a second pair of incisors that are set directly behind the growing pair in the upper jaw. This trait is specific to lagomorphs. Now, thanks to species gene coding, we know that these two orders have very distinct and separate evolutionary histories. Rabbits are an important part of the ecosystems that they inhabit. For hundreds of years, man has been the greatest destroyer of the planet. As the highest being on the food chain, our impact on the environment is the greatest contributor to the loss of species worldwide. Breeding grounds are being destroyed and access to resources is diminishing due to industrial and residential development, logging, crop farming, livestock grazing, mining, road and dam building and pesticide use. All of this in the name of progress. This topic is one that really hits me where I live. Nothing angers me more than a chemical spill that kills countless animals and has long lasting effects on their habitats. I’m going to talk about three instances where greed, human error and indifference caused permanent damage to huge swaths of land and ocean. I’m going to talk about the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Chernobyl nuclear incident and the Palestine, Ohio train derailment. Who’s Who Outside of the Zoo has begun! Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I’m your host, Jackie Moranty. Here we are in Season Six. This season is dedicated to wildlife disease and conservation. I’ve been trying to keep seasons at about 8 episodes, but this one may run a little longer. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to wildlife disease and conservation and the way that they come together. I’ll be introducing some things that we haven’t talked about previously. Many of the diseases of wildlife are obscure and though the symptoms may sound like a virus or a bacterial infection, they could be something completely different. This brings us to today’s episode. Chronic Wasting Disease in cervids. It’s caused by an organism that we haven’t talked about before. It’s a prion. I’m the first to admit that I’m terrified of prions. They’re unpredictable, they’re incurable and they’re fatal. The worst thing about them is that they take years to manifest, so you don’t know you have one until it’s too late to do much about it. Often, the term food poisoning is used for both foodborne illnesses and foodborne intoxication. Today, I’m going to explain the difference between the two and talk about the burden that these illnesses have on societies, especially in the developing world. About 6.5 million in the US experience the effects of a foodborne pathogen at least once a year, but most of them go unreported since people think they just have the “stomach flu”. Newsflash, that was no flu, that was a foodborne pathogen. This is the final episode in Season 5, Restaurant Rogues, but don’t worry, I’ll be talking about more foodborne pathogens as time goes on. Mary sent me an email with a news article attached. The article said that 47% of people don’t think that life will ever get back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic. If you listen to the smallpox episodes, the Spanish flu episode and the polio episode, many of the same things happened that happened during the Covid pandemic. Schools were shut down, social distancing was a thing, people wore masks, they were encouraged to stay home, there was grocery delivery, there were vaccine mandates and there were travel cards. People had to prove that they were vaccinated before they could travel. During the polio epidemic, no one could leave New York City without proof that they had been vaccinated. As I sit here today, the Covid-19 pandemic has had relatively little long term affect on people. We’re no longer wearing masks or social distancing. I haven’t had to show my vaccination card in ages. What it comes down to is this: People as a rule are extremely short-sighted. They don’t see past next week or next month. They think everything is going to last forever. Especially if that thing is something they view as negative. In truth, very few policies surrounding healthcare crises remain permanent. Our society is more concerned with war than public health. This is why 911 caused way more changes to society than Covid-19 ever will. At the end of the day, we’re far more concerned about the cost of rebuilding infrastructure than we are with any sort of human destruction. Even though, human destruction is priceless. I chose this particular parasite because my dog, Sweet Pea was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago despite having worm meds every month. We’ll begin this story, as usual, with etiology and pathology. Whipworm is a parasitic roundworm. Its scientific name is Trichuris trichiura, it’s phylum is Nematoda, Class Enoplea, Domain Eukaryota. It’s in the Family Trichuridae, Genus Trichuris and Kingdom Animalia. The body of the worm is shaped like a whip with a long, thick handle-like structure at one end, the anus, that tapers off to a thin whip-like structure at the other end.
