https://newamericapodcast.com/

#scripted #fiction #comedy

Adventures in New America is the first sci-fi, political satire, Afrofuturistic buddy comedy, serialized for New Americans in a new and desperate time.

Set a few years in the future, Adventures in New America follows the escapades of two mismatched African-New-American best friends — fat, lonely, curmudgeon IA and lesbian sneak-thief Simon Carr — who take on a series of increasingly wild heists to get quick cash to pay for IA’s medical treatment while attempting to survive the wilds of New New York City — and a secret cabal of Tetchy Terrorist Vampire Zombies from outer space. Intrigued? Good! Frequently, there will be musical numbers... and radical reflections on our dangerous, beautiful, heart-pounding world.

Harsh Reality: The Story of Miriam Rivera, NFL Explained, Teenager Therapy17 Apr 202200:46:08

Liz Recommends - Harsh Reality: The Story of Miriam Rivera

https://wondery.com/shows/the-story-of-miriam-rivera/

It was supposed to be a reality show with a twist. In a sun-drenched villa in Ibiza, six hot guys compete for a cash prize and for the love of the beautiful and mysterious Miriam. It’s meant to be her big break: the moment she becomes the superstar she was born to be. But this is the era of “cruel reality TV” and the show producers have a different goal: they want to surprise the men with the fact that Miriam is trans. A new six-episode investigative series from Wondery, the makers of The Shrink Next Door and The Apology Line, and from Novel, HARSH REALITY is the story about love, lies, reality TV and a woman before her time: Miriam Rivera. Written by Agnes Borinsky and hosted by Trace Lysette.

She's On The Money, Marvel's Wolverine, The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong28 Jun 202000:33:39

We have more podcasts for your ear holes this week. Liz decided she needs to get more comfy with managing her cash, so she's recommending She's On The Money. Nick gets his comic book nerd on with Marvel's foray into the podcast universe, Wolverine. And Zane takes a look at all the times people buggered things up in the past with The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong. Then it's review time, featuring our recommendations from last week.

Liz Recommends - She’s on the Money

https://www.shesonthemoney.com.au/

Note there are two She’s on the Money podcasts, we are talking about the Australian podcast featuring Victoria Devine, financial advisor and co-host Georgia King. They have an AMAZING FB community which is great to join for advice and group consensus. They usually reference the group on the pod to chat about their money wins and tips for saving etc.

“We empower women to make smart money decisions.

Millennial women are smart, savvy and independent. We grew up listening to Destiny’s Child, so it’s only natural, right? Yet, when it comes to money stuff, we can feel overwhelmed, unsure where to invest or stuck in a relentless cycle of “money in and money out”, never making ground or reaching our goals. She’s on the Money is here to help solve those problems. We believe that being good with money doesn’t mean you have to hibernate and live on a diet of two minute noodles and cheap wine. We believe you can have it all; the house deposit, the Pilates membership, the share portfolio, the Santorini trip and, of course, the brunch dates.

We’re here to change your relationship with money through relatable finance and money hacks you can implement today.”

For both: whatever topic takes your fancy.

Nick Recommends - Marvel's Wolverine

INJECT that adamantium into your veins! Following a string of mysterious deaths in Burns, Alaska, Special Agents Sally Pierce and Tad Marshall arrive to investigate. They soon find there’s more going on than meets the eye

For both: From the start

Zane Recommends - The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong

https://www.constantpodcast.com/

Back to the status quo for Zane this week as he recommends and SCIENCE & HISTORY podcast. The Constant is a science and history podcast about getting things wrong. From ancient science to contemporary blunders, we take you on journeys of misadventure and misapprehension, filling your brain with juicy nuggets of the sometimes comical, sometimes tragical and always fascinating ways people mess things up.

Each season of The Constant runs 8 episodes, released weekly on Tuesdays.

Episodes vary in length, with the shortest running 10 minutes and the longest nearly 1 hour, but on average most stories tend to range between 20-25 minutes.

The Constant is currently on hiatus, with plans to return for a special abbreviated kickstarter season in October.

Dying for Sex, Tides of History, The Last Voyage of the Pong Su21 Jun 202000:36:08

This week we set a challenge for each Castologist to recommend a podcast they think one of the OTHER Castologists would normally recommend! Still with us? SO: Zane brought a podcast on sex, feminism and mortality for Liz: Dying for Sex. Then, Nick recommended a historical journey for Zane with Tides of History. Then Liz did her darndest to impress Nick with a podcast containing all his favourite things including boats, shipping containers, spies and intrigue with The Last Voyage of the Pong Su. Then, it's time for the reviews of last week's podcast.

Liz Recommends - The Last Voyage of the Pong Su

https://www.theage.com.au/pong-su

A North Korean dictator, bags of heroin, drug lords, spooks, sailors, Australian cops and a web of lies: Come aboard The Last Voyage of The Pong Su.

Featuring conversations recorded by listening devices, and translated. Interviews. Reported by Richard Baker (The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald) and produced by Rachael Dexter, The Last Voyage of The Pong Su tells the story of an ill-fated 2003 drug trafficking operation involving a North Korean cargo ship, its crew and members of an Asian crime syndicate targeting Australia with a then-record amount of heroin (estimated street value of A$160 million.)

The podcast also won the Melbourne Press Club's Quill award for podcasting.

Description

For Nick: Start from the start, it's a serial.

Nick Recommends - Tides of History

Zane LOVES history so Nick chose HISTORY to curry favour with the podfather. Those echoes define the boundaries of states and countries, how we pray and how we fight. They determine what money we spend and and how we earn it at work, what language we speak and how we raise our children. From Wondery, host Patrick Wyman, PhD (“Fall Of Rome”) helps us understand our world and how it got to be the way it is.

For Zane: Any and all!

Clear and Present Danger, The Left Right Game, Chronosphere Fiction14 Jun 202000:31:00

Ooh boy do we have a show for you today. Zane gets into the big issues this week and we mean big... free speech and how it’s in massive anyone? His recommendation is Clear and Present Danger. Liz has found an immersive podcast the thinks could be even better than 2019’s beloved Carrier: The Left Right Game. And Nick finally delves into the listener submission pile with Chronosphere Fiction. Then it’s REVIEW TIME!

Liz Recommends - The Left Right Game

https://www.qcodemedia.com/theleftrightgame

Originally written on a Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/7asz8x/has_anyone_heard_of_the_leftright_game_part_1/), The Left Right Game is Liz’s new obsession. AND it’s about to be made into a TV series (https://www.slashfilm.com/the-left-right-game/) on Amazon.

“Tessa Thompson stars as an idealistic young journalist trying to make a name for herself by following a group of paranormal explorers, obsessed with a seemingly harmless pastime known as the Left/Right Game. The journey takes her into a supernatural world that she and the other members of the expedition can neither handle nor survive.”

Starring and co-produced by Tessa Thompson.

Written and created by Jack Anderson.

Directed by Emma Tammi.

Presented by Sonos, QCode Media.

Zane Recommends - Clear and Present Danger

http://www.freespeechhistory.com/

From 1989 and until the early noughties free speech went viral across the globe as new democracies tore down the walls of censorship. But for more than a decade the global respect for free speech has been in decline. In 2003 41% of the world’s countries had a free press. In 2017 that figure had dropped to 31%. Or put differently: Only 13% of the world’s 7,4 billion people enjoy free speech. 45% live in countries where censorship is the norm. Still, more than half the world’s population across cultures and continents think free speech is very important. But why is that? Where does the principle of free speech come from? How has it been developed over time? Why have kings, emperors, and governments killed and imprisoned people to shut them up? And why have countless people risked death and imprisonment to express their beliefs? And what can people in the digital age learn from past conflicts over where to draw the line? Jacob Mchangama guides you through the history of free speech from the trial of Socrates to the Great Firewall.

Jacob Mchangama is the founder and executive director of Justitia a think tank focusing on human rights and a Visiting Scholar at Columbia’s Global Freedom of Expression Center. He has commented extensively on free speech and human rights in outlets including the Washington Post, the Wall Street...

Time To Die, Dead For Filth, The End of the World with Josh Clark07 Jun 202000:30:27

Well we've accidentally done it again; we've themed the week. Somehow we've all ended up recommending podcasts with super bleak titles (but not all bleak content!). Liz recommends Aussie comedy podcast Time to Die, Zane recommends queer film deep dive podcast Dead for Filth, and Nick explores the end of the world with, well, The End of The World with Josh Clark. Then it's on to the reviews of last week's podcasts.

Liz Recommends -

Time To Die

https://www.planetbroadcasting.com/our-shows/time-to-die/

"Time To Die is the unfunniest podcast you’ll ever subscribe to. But that’s kind of the point.

Each episode we match up to two brilliant comedians and ask them to use their comedy powers to write three minutes of the worst stand up they can imagine. Then our guests swap their scripts and go out and present the stand up as if they wrote it themselves… at a real comedy club. The winner is the comic who commits to the bit and gets the most laughs!"

HOSTS:

BEN RUSSELL

Ben Russell is a graduate of The Second City Chicago and iO Chicago. He has appeared in True Story with Hamish and Andy, SBS’ The Feed, The Project on 10, Tonightly, The Letdown and The Aaron Chen Tonight Show on ABC. You can hear Ben on podcasts Finding Drago (ABC) and the twisted sketch show The Grub with Greg Larsen and Anne Edmonds.

TOM WHITTY

Tom Whitty is an award-winning journalist, TV producer and musician. He’s the executive producer of Australia Talks for the ABC, the former managing editor of The Project for Network Ten, and the creator of Time To Die. He’s also obsessed with stand-up comedy.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/time-to-die/id1504187933

For Both: At time of airing, there are only three eps thanks to COVID19 hitting just as they launched but pick any episode that appeals.

Nick Recommends - The End of the World with Josh Clark

We humans could have a bright future ahead of us that lasts billions of years. But we have to survive the next 200 years first. Join Josh Clark of Stuff You Should Know for a 10-episode deep dive that explores the future of humanity and finds dangers we have never encountered before lurking just ahead. And if we humans are alone in the universe, if we don't survive intelligent life dies out with us too.

https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-end-of-the-world-with-josh-clark/id1437682381

Zane Recommends - Dead for Filth

Zane loves movies, but hesitates to listen to many film podcasts, let alone recommend them, but this listener submission is one of the exceptions. From the ooky spooky mind of horror personality and screenwriter, Michael Varrati, comes the June Gloom Productions original Podcast "Dead For Filth", for all things queer horror and beyond. Dead For Filth will bring you the best queer & horror icons out of the closet and into the night to talk about the genre they love.

Song Exploder, What Shall We Do About...?, 60-Second Science31 May 202000:30:15

It's podcast time, your favourite time of the week. Zane is still hungry for podsnacks so he recommends 60-Second Science (Space/Mind/Tech/Earth/Health). Liz dives into the listener recommendation pile to solve the worlds trivial problems with What Shall We Do About...? and Nick shows his love for music and sound engineering with Song Exploder. Then, it's on to the reviews from last week. Whose podsnack will reign supreme?

Liz Recommends - What Shall We Do About?

"The world is full of problems, though most of them don't make the headlines. Sam Robinson sits down with some prominent personalities to try to improve and perhaps even solve some of the world's less pressing issues. Nothing too trivial will be left unturned."

Host Sam Robinson sits down with Aussie personalities like Marc Fennel, Ash London and Dan Illic to discuss how to solve the world's issues that are smaller than, say, a fucking pandemic.

Like What shall we do about kindness? Which is all about how to find the good in among all this shit. Or what shall we do about children's television, where Sam chat's to kids TV royalty James Sherry about what will happen with aussie kids TV quotas being reduced. Or even what shall we do about clutter if we don't wanna go all Mari Kondo on our stuff?

For both: Pick a topic or personality that appeals

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-shall-we-do-about/id1484907828

Nick Recommends - Song Exploder

A podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.

Zane Recommends - 60-Second Science from the Scientific American (Space/Mind/Tech/Earth/Health)

Cautionary Tales, We Crashed, Motherhacker17 May 202000:35:21

Welcome back to another episode packed with podcasts!

Liz Recommends: Cautionary Tales

http://timharford.com/articles/cautionarytales/

"We’ve always warned children by telling them unsettling fairy tales. But my Cautionary Tales are for the education of the grown ups. And my Cautionary Tales are all true.

Cautionary Tales is a new podcast from Tim Hartford and Pushkin Industries, makers of Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History, Michael Lewis’s Against The Rules, and Laurie Santos’s Happiness Lab.

"Helping me tell these Cautionary Tales are some marvellous actors, including Alan Cumming (Instinct), Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) and Russell Tovey (Quantico). We also present the acting debut of a certain Mr Malcolm Gladwell.

Together we weave stories of human error, of tragic catastrophes and hilarious fiascos. Oil tankers crash in broad daylight, vital military ideas are carelessly given away to the Nazis, and a shouty man in a uniform pulls off an audacious heist. Alongside the drama, each story has a moral that emerges from psychology, economics, even design. Each story will make you wiser."

For both: You Have Reached Your Destination; Bowie, Jazz and the Unplayable Piano

Nick Recommends - WeCrashed

The founders of WeWork thought they were on the brink of making history. The company was valued at $47 billion dollars, it was ready for a huge IPO, and its charismatic CEO Adam Neumann thought it was going to change the world. Adam had a prophet-like vision for WeWork that he sold to some of the world’s savviest investors — but did his vision ever match the company’s reality? Hosted by David Brown of the hit podcast Business Wars, WeCrashed is a six-part series about the rise and fall of WeWork. It’s a story of hope and hubris, big money and bigger screwups, and the lengths people will go to chase “unicorns.”

Fall of Civilizations, Please Save Me, Fake Heiress10 May 202000:30:43

PODCASTS, GET YOUR PODCASTS. You want 'em? We got 'em, piping hot just for you. Nick looks at the fall of difference civilizations with a podcast unsurprisingly titled Fall of Civilizations. Zane goes super meta with the fake TV recap show Please Save Me. And Liz is back on the crime wagon (did she ever really get off?) with Fake Heiress. Then it's reviews time for last week's eps, baby!

Liz Recommends - FAKE Heiress

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000c9mb/episodes/downloads

The rise and fall of Anna Delvey, who conned New York high society into believing that she was a multi-millionaire heiress. Vicky Baker and Chloe Moss dig deeper into the scandal in this BBC 6 part series..

"For years, Ms. Sorokin pretended to be Anna Delvey, a German heiress with a trust fund that paid for a life of glamorous ease. She lived in boutique hotels, wore designer clothes and hung out in Manhattan’s moneyed party circles. In reality, Ms. Sorokin, 28, was a Russian immigrant who walked out on bills, connived her way into luxury, and persuaded a bank employee to give her $100,000 she never intended to pay back, the jury decided in convicting her in 2020.

Nickcast - The Future of Podcasting10 Apr 202200:12:59
Nick plays it REAL smart by asking Liz and Zane... what is the future of podcasting!

In Bed With Nick and Megan, The Big One: Your Survival Guide, Musicals With Cheese03 May 202000:26:36

Hi! It's us, your friendly Castologists here to give you the podcasts we think you should be listening to. Get cosy with Liz's recommendation: In Bed With Nick and Megan, which sees celebrities literally getting in bed to chat with Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. Nick gets us all ready for a massive earthquake in a region nowhere near where we record with The Big One: Your Survival Guide. And Zane shows his theatre geekery with Musicals With Cheese.

Then it's time for the TRUE CRIME week reviews!

Liz Recommends - In Bed with Nick and Megan

https://www.earwolf.com/show/in-bed-with-nick-offerman-and-megan-mullally/

"Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman have been a couple for 20 years – 138 years in Hollywood time – and in their brand new podcast they take listeners directly into their bed… because that’s where every episode is recorded – their bed. Cozying up with their famous friends, your favourite couple provide a funny, revealing, and very candid look into their relationship and life at large. In some episodes, they’ll even kick the guest out of bed and get extra personal in what some have called the most searing and rawly sexual conversations ever to burn their way through a voice recorder. Oh, yes. It’s that good. Join Megan and Nick for some serious pillow talk."

For both: Pick a guest that takes your fancy

Pretend Radio, The Score: The Bank Robber Diaries, Dig26 Apr 202000:28:41

True crime lovers of the world unite, it's CRIME TIME on Castology this week. It's conmen, liars, and shysters with Zane's recommendation Pretend Radio. Liz took a break from murder (listening to it, not doing it) to recommend The Score: The Bank Robber Diaries. And then Nick does a deep dive into some pretty sobering systemic breakdowns with Dig. Then, it's review time for last week's recommendations.

Liz Recommends - The Score: The Bank Robber Diaries

https://play.acast.com/s/thescore

"14 months. 30 Banks. An all-access pass into the mind of one of Southern California’s most prolific bank robbers.

On the show, Joe Loya - the so-called “Beirut Bandit” - reveals his story of transformation from abusive childhood to prolific bank robber, violent convict, ex-con, writer and ultimately, a reconciled son.

Produced by Peabody-Award winning podcaster Ben Adair (The Sterling Affairs, Dr. Death, Reveal) at Western Sound in partnership with Acast Studios."

This podcast runs through the life cycle of a bank robber, from how he got into robbing banks, how it escalated, how he got caught, how he fared in prison… has he really reformed?

For both: Start at the very beginning.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-score-bank-robber-diaries/id1483260185

Nick Recommends - Dig

A woman told Louisville police she was raped in January 2018. She expected them to quickly try to arrest the suspect. But an officer on the scene that night didn't seem to believe her. The detectives weren't convinced that a crime occurred. And a prosecutor rejected the case well before an arrest was even under consideration. In the first season of Dig, a new podcast from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, we bring you the results of a yearlong look at how rape cases are investigated in Louisville. What we've learned: here, the police defer to prosecutors on rape cases — and prosecutors reject the vast majority of cases presented to them. Due to this unusual relationship, most people accused of rape here will never face consequences. Most won't be arrested or convicted. And the case will be closed anyway.

For both: From the start!

Zane Recommends - Pretend Radio

http://pretendradio.org/

No blood and gore here! Pretend Radio is a documentary-style podcast about real people pretending to be someone else. The host interview con artists, snake oil salesmen, undercover FBI agents—pretty much anyone living a lie.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-eleventh/id1499296059

How much do you really know about the 11th of November 1975?

You’ve probably heard that famous "Well may we say" speech made by Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam on the day he was sacked by the Queen’s representative ... or seen the grainy footage from the steps of old parliament house.

Blood Ties, Love+Radio, The Rewatchables12 Apr 202000:27:53

A broad spectrum of recommendations for all of our budding castologists out there! Liz is back at the Wondery alter with the family drama of Blood Ties, Nick dips into the Movie podcast pool with the Rewatchables and Zane is spinning off by himself once again with the off-beat interview podcast of Love+Radio! Lots to choose from this week, let us know what you think!

Liz Recommends - Blood Ties

https://wondery.com/shows/blood-ties/

When Eleonore and Michael Richland (played by Gillian Jacobs and Josh Gad) lose their parents unexpectedly in a small plane crash, they must choose between two very different paths: honor their father’s legacy as a world-renowned cardiologist and health care magnate — or risk everything for the truth. From Wondery, the makers of “Dirty John,” “Dr. Death,” and “Over My Dead Body,” comes the first season of a new six episode scripted drama. Starring Gillian Jacobs (Community, Love), Josh Gad (Frozen, Book of Mormon), and Amy Landecker (Transparent).

There are currently six episodes with a behind-the-scenes seventh. BUT it does seem to to hint at a season 2 so stay tuned.

Nick Recommends - The Rewatchables

The Rewatchables sees a cast of people from The Ringer and the world come together to discuss the most rewatchable movies ever.

For both: Pick your favourite movie. (Dunkirk episode is excellent)

We Love You (And So Can You), Reveal, The Jungle Prince05 Apr 202000:31:03

Well hey there. It's us, your friendly Castologists. We are here to make your self-isolating that little bit easier with recommendations of the podcasts you should be listening to. Liz recommends a show that's part reality television, part makeover show and part self help with We Love You (And So Can You). Zane gets serious (and we seriously mean serious) with the serious investigative journalism podcast Reveal. Then Nick takes us across the globe for an intriguing documentary about a hidden royal family with The Jungle Prince. Then, it's review time, baby.

Liz Recommends - We Love You (And So Can You)

https://twitter.com/weloveyoupod?lang=en

"We Love You (And So Can You) follows the journey of a guest looking to makeover part of their life: like jumping back into the dating world, dealing with professional jealousy, or navigating a new phase in life as an empty nester. Hosts Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg draw on extensive knowledge of self-help to provide a prescription of wellness practices, creative activities, media consumption, and more, which the guest follows while we eavesdrop on their progress. The goal: for the guest to find the outstanding person who was there all along, and learn to love themselves more. We Love You (And So Can You) is part reality show, part self-love school, and the best makeover show in the podcast universe."

These gals are also the hosts of the previously recommended podcast By The Book (https://bythebookpod.com/about-us)

Nick Recommends - The Jungle Prince

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/22/world/asia/the-jungle-prince-of-delhi.html

The story passed for years from tea sellers to rickshaw drivers to shopkeepers in Old Delhi. In a forest, they said, in a palace cut off from the city, lived a prince, a princess and a queen, said to be the last of a Shiite Muslim royal line. Some said the family had been there since the British had annexed their kingdom. Others said they were supernatural beings. It was a stunning and tragic story. But was it real?

On a spring afternoon, while on assignment in India, Ellen Barry got a phone call that sent her looking for the truth.

For both: All of it!

With PRX, CIR co-produces the nationally distributed “Reveal” radio show and podcast. “Reveal” features CIR’s reporting, as well as stories from public radio stations and a wide range of media partners, both nonprofit and commercial. Founded in 1977 as the nation’s first nonprofit investigative journalism organization, The Center for Investigative Reporting has developed a reputation for being among the most innovative, credible and relevant media organizations in the country.

The SwapCast Podcast

https://www.theswapcastpodcast.com/

Every episode hosts Paul Mizzi, Lucy Thomas, and Brendan Levi delve in to the wonderful world of the body swap trope in their inane quest to find gold in an oversaturated genre.

At time of recording there are 41 episodes between 40 mins to an hour. They also have minisodes where they review some movies they’ve mentioned but not specifically covered because it’s hard to watch everything.

They’ve reviewed big movies such as, well, Big (which is way more problematic than you remember), Freaky Friday, and Shazaam, as well as smaller flicks such as Ice Angel AKA On Thin Ice: Going For The Gold.

The Wilderness, Solve, and Shut Up A Second22 Mar 202000:43:04

Hi-diddley-ho Castologerinos! This week Nick delves into the world of US politics and the 2020 election with The Wilderness. Liz finds a podcast that asks you to be the detective and crack the crime case with Solve. Then Zane tells everyone else to shut up a second by recommending Shut Up A Second. Then it's onto the reviews!

Liz Recommends - Solve

https://solvehq.com/podcast/

You’ve listened to every true crime podcast, lost days on the Zodiac killer subReddit, and googled so many serial killers you’re probably on some watchlist. By now you consider yourself a seasoned detective. There’s just one thing missing: you’ve never been given a real case to crack.

Enter SOLVE, the world’s first interactive murder-mystery podcast that puts you at the center of the investigation. Each week on SOLVE, you’ll be assigned a new case, based on real true crimes, that will test your skills as a detective. You’ll interrogate new suspects, piece together evidence, and scour distinct crime scenes to track down murderers hiding in plain sight. SOLVE premieres December 16th on Apple Podcasts, the iHeart Radio app, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. One crime. Four suspects. Can you SOLVE these crimes?

Listeners are invited to decipher clues embedded in leaked audio files, voicemails, courtroom testimony, and other evidence to try to find the killer.

The L.A.-based startup has raised $20 million in funding from Elisabeth Murdoch, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Upfront Ventures and Shari Redstone’s Advancit Capital.

Solve first debuted as an original Snapchat Show in May 2018 as an interactive murder mystery show, in which the audience takes on the role of the detective. Viewers interview suspects and analyze key evidence to try to solve cases inspired by true crimes. So far, about 150 episodes of “Solve” have been produced for Snapchat, with new instalments premiering weekly.

The Solve podcast series was produced in partnership with iHeartMedia and SALT Audio, the production company that has worked on top scripted podcasts “Blackout,” starring and executive produced by Rami Malek (from QCode and Endeavor Content) and “Carrier” (from QCode).

Next year, Solve plans to launch projects in “every other media you can think of,” including video games, Wright said.

For both: Any ep that takes your fancy.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/solve/id1487980715

Nick Recommends - The Wilderness

What will it take to defeat Donald Trump in November? In season 2 of The Wilderness, Jon Favreau looks for the path to victory in 2020 by talking to voters, strategists, organizers, and candidates in the battleground states that will decide the election.

For both: From season 2 (season 1 is a little dated, but worth a listen)

The Alarmist, How I Survived, and It Burns15 Mar 202000:31:22

We don't really have a theme but the names of our recommendations do sound very disaster-y this week. Zane recommends The Alarmist, a podcast for everyone who loves to catastrophise. Liz shares her favourite stories of survival with How I Survived (and we all know how much Liz loves a good survival story). And then Nick jumps over to Audible for the exclusive podcast It Burns, which isn't about his personal hygiene, but rather about the mad world of competitive chilli growing. Then it's reviews time from last week.

Liz Recommends - How I Survived

https://www.thatslife.com.au/thats-life-new-podcast-how-i-survived-survival-stories

Each fortnight, How I Survived brings you the shocking true story of a person who’s survived against the odds, told in their own words. Hosted by that's life! writer Beth Young, these stories are terrifying, inspiring and ultimately prove the power of the human will to live.

Liz finds it hard to listen to the self-inflicted accidents (sliced face off with a chainsaw? NO THANK YOU.) But she loves the ones where people have weird encounters, or triumph over evil motherf***ers.

For both: Bourke Street Massacre: My Brother The Killer

I Was Swallowed by A Hippo

Kelly Went For A Run - attacked while running

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/how-i-survived/id1380588512

Nick Recommends - It Burns

It Burns is the story of a 10-year scandal-plagued international competition that will take listeners from the Australian Coast to South Carolina (via an Indian Research Facility).

It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions.

The internet is filled with videos of grown men being reduced to tears by a square millimetre of chilli. The docu-series asks: what motivates someone to breed and eat a demonic nugget that is so hot it no longer has flavour? At what point does this stop being cuisine and start being an endurance sport?

This humorous series shows that all this has never really been about chilli. It’s been about how people use pain to shape themselves, define themselves and make themselves feel alive.

For both: All of it!

https://www.audible.com.au/pd/It-Burns-Audiobook/B07R52JVMZ

Zane Recommends - The Alarmist

https://www.earios.net/the-alarmist

A new discovery for Zane is The Alarmist! Writer/performer Rebecca Delgado-Smith (The Good Place) and guests scrutinize history’s greatest disasters to figure out what went wrong, and most importantly, who’s to blame.

Stuff the British Stole, The Trojan Horse Affair, You Are Good03 Apr 202200:28:07

Liz Recommends - Stuff the British Stole

https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/stuff-the-british-stole/

Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today those objects are housed in genteel institutions across the UK and the world. They usually come with polite plaques. This is a series about the not-so-polite history behind those objects.

Each episode, award-winning journalist, author and genetic-potluck, Marc Fennell, picks one artefact and takes you on the wild, evocative, sometimes funny, often tragic adventure of how it got to where it is today.

These objects will ultimately help us see the Commonwealth — and ourselves — today, in a different light.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/stuff-the-british-stole/id1540218461

Nick Recommends - The Trojan Horse Affair

A strange letter appears on a city councillor’s desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city’s schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country’s counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives.

To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because through all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer a basic question: Who wrote the letter? And why? The night before Hamza is to start journalism school, he has a chance meeting in Birmingham with the reporter Brian Reed, the host of the hit podcast S-Town. Together they team up to investigate: Who wrote the Trojan Horse letter? They quickly discover that it’s a question people in power do not want them asking.

Zane Recommends - You Are Good

#movies #duo #chatty

https://blubrry.com/whyaredads

Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed have always struggled to succinctly express just what their podcast is about. Until recently it was called Why Are Dads? and professed to explore films via the lens of their father figures. They stuck to this conceit for a little while — albeit with frequent, entertaining digressions — but soon a drift started to occur. The show started in August of 2020, and by the winter it wasn’t uncommon that episodes would spend far more time on other areas than they did on fathers. By the spring, the digressions had completely overwhelmed the dads. Acknowledging that their focus had changed, this May the pair announced that they were changing the name to You Are Good (a reference to a touching scene of affirmation in Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein that they’d discussed on an earlier episode).

RSlash, The Pitch, Girls On Porn08 Mar 202000:31:31

Chasing Cosby, QueerMuslimSexWorker, I Spy01 Mar 202000:26:12

Hello and welcome back to Castology, your weekly dose of podcast goodness. Or badness in this instance, with Liz recommending the dark must-listen podcast Chasing Cosby. You can probably guess what it's about. Then Zane offers up a one-episode-only podcast on exactly what the title says it's about: QueerMuslimSexWorker. And finally Nick gets his MI5 on with a bit of I Spy, the podcast that chats all things in the world of international espionage. Then it's review time, baby!

Liz Recommends - Chasing Cosby

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2020-01-07/new-podcast-chasing-cosby-chronicles-the-rise-and-fall-of-bill-cosby

Guys, this one gets dark, so brace yourself. But also it's super important so you have to listen.

"For nearly half a century, Bill Cosby brought warmth and laughter into hearts across the country, cementing his image as “America’s Dad.” But he also led a dark, secret life preying on women. The comedian carefully coaxed each one into feeling safe and cared for, then left them to pick up the pieces of their lives. It all started with Andrea Constand. She carried the burden of being the only one of the 60-plus accusers whose case could be tried in a court of law. Now, she's telling her side of the story, along with firsthand accounts from more than a dozen survivors, jurors and prosecutors. From the Los Angeles Times, and hosted by investigative reporter Nicki Weisensee Egan, "Chasing Cosby" is the definitive take of the rise and fall of Bill Cosby. New episodes released every Tuesday."

For both: It's a serial so start at the start. Also note: ep 3 is ROUGH but important listening.

Nick Recommends - I Spy

Spies don’t talk—it’s the cardinal rule of the business. But here at Foreign Policy, we get them to open up. On I Spy, we hear from the operations people: the spies who steal secrets, who kill adversaries, who turn agents into double agents. Each episode features one spy telling the story of one operation.

For both: any of em!

Zane Recommends - QueerMuslimSexWorker

https://audioboom.com/posts/5877593-queer-muslim-sex-worker

An odd one this week, Zane has brought the unique podcast Queer Musilim Sex Worker. Now, it is not the content that is odd (it is very compelling), but the format - it is a single-episode documentary podcast. The unashamedly intersectional podcast telling the incredible story of Mariam, a sex worker who juggles being Muslim, queer and non-binary.

For Both: There is only one episode

Directive, Several Stories High, Just The Zoo Of Us/Amazing Wildlife23 Feb 202000:33:32

What's up listeners? This week it's all about YOU (well, if you submitted a podcast). It's listener submission week! Nick and Liz have gone a similar yet different route, both picking storytelling podcasts. Nick recommends the sci-fi fiction serial Directive, and Liz recommends the anthological podcast devoted to telling all the tales Several Stories High. Then, Zane gets his David Attenborough on with not one but TWO animal podcasts: Just The Zoo Of Us and Amazing Wildlife. Then it's reviews time.

Liz Recommends - Several Stories High

https://www.severalstorieshigh.com/podcast

"Several Stories High is a podcast and much more—an idea. This concept of stories. Little slices of magic on display for all who should notice such things. Whether it’s a true tale, fiction, or somewhere in between…it’s all magic.

But stories come in many forms, no? Some you read. Others you hear—be they from a tangible teller of tales, present and in the flesh, or via the airwaves. And some stories take the form of song. Of moving musical melodies that conjure emotional responses from the deepest parts of us. Maybe they’ll make us feel like laughing, or crying, or contemplating—but the only thing that matters is that we feel something.

Yes. Everybody loves a good story—whether you hear it, read it, or sing it … just as long as you feel it. And Several Stories High creator Nathaniel David Knox has a few of his own to tell.

And for those who prefer to read stories rather than listen to them, he even has some written stories up on his website. But you're here, so you probs just want that sweet podcasty goodness. That's cool too, no judgment here!

For both: Pick a story that takes your fancy

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1400576578

Nick Recommends - Directive

A listener submitted SciFi series about a man stuck alone for 20 years, taking care of sleep passengers on a ship to colonise a new planet.

For both: all eps!

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/directive/id1441355969

Zane Recommends -Just the Zoo of Us & Amazing Wildlife (Two Podcasts)

Two lisener submissions! We had two animal-centric podcasts submit to us one-day apart, and so, not to unfairly pick one over the other, Zane is bringing both to the table this week!

Just the Zoo of Us (https://www.justthezooofus.com/) is an animal review podcast by Christian and Ellen Weatherford of Jacksonville, Florida. Every week, each host selects one animal species submitted by a listener to research, review, and rate out of ten in the categories of effectiveness, ingenuity and aesthetics. This podcast is made with families in mind and contains no profanity or graphic language. This podcast is released weekly and usually runs just under an hour.

Amazing Wildlife is an educational series highlighting the wonders of the animal kingdom. Featuring fun and insightful facts about the world's most fantastic animals (a few species an episode). Released approximately once every fortnight the episodes run just under 20 minutes.

For Both: Pick your favourite!

Land of the Giants, The Mysterious Mr Epstein/Broken, Stone Clearing with Richard Herring16 Feb 202000:33:30

Oh hi there. Castology this week is coming at you with lots of angry-making podcasts. Nick looks at the companies taking over the world (specifically Amazon this week) and what that will cost us with Land of the Giants. Liz submits two podcasts on the same topic for you to compare and contrast. The topic: disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. The podcasts: The Mysterious Mr Epstein and Broken. Then Zane fires shots in the niche podcast showdown by recommending Stone Clearing With Richard Herring. Then as always, it's review time for last week's offerings!

Liz Recommends - The Mysterious Mr Epstein and Broken: Jeffrey Epstein

https://wondery.com/shows/the-mysterious-mr-epstein/

https://www.sonymusic.com/sonymusic-labels/adam-mckay-and-three-uncanny-four-productions-partner-to-launch-investigative-podcast-focused-on-jeffrey-epstein/

Mysterious Mr Epstein. This is a Wondry podcast detailing the story of how a wealthy financier who was apparently able to elude justice for financial and sexual crimes from his first days as a young man on Wall Street, until the very end. Hosted by Lindsay Graham.

"We now know that Jeffrey Epstein was a sexual predator. He was also accused of fraud, embezzlement, coercion and more. But for most of his life, he was a mystery to the public, and to many of the people who knew him. In this six part series, we peel back the layers of Epstein’s life to detail his financial and sexual crimes, and his network of enablers, with original reporting and interviews. From humble beginnings, Epstein came to amass significant wealth which he used to buy sex, social status, silence, even justice —until money wasn’t enough. From Wondery (“Dirty John”, “The Shrink Next Door”), and hosted by Lindsay Graham (“American Scandal”)."

Broken: Jeffrey Epstein is a Three Uncanny Four production, with a team that includes Adam McKay, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind The Big Short and Vice. "Jeffrey Epstein described himself as “radioactive”, and then he died in prison. But right before that, he was a friend and confidant of many of America’s most powerful politicians, billionaires, and entertainers, some of whom apparently shared a common interest: trafficking underage girls. In "BROKEN: JEFFREY EPSTEIN" host Ariel Levy (The New Yorker) and Special Correspondent and Executive Producer Julie K. Brown (The Miami Herald) tell the full story of Epstein, his accomplices, and the broken systems that enabled his crimes."

For both: I would suggest starting with Mysterious Mr Epstein and then going to Broken because the details in Broken matter more when you know the man behind them.

Nick Recommends - Land of the Giants

Facebook. Apple. Amazon. Netflix. Google. These five tech giants have changed the world. But how? And at what cost? Recode’s Jason Del Rey starts with The Rise of Amazon. Over two decades, an online marketplace for books became the world’s most valuable company. We examine how it got its power, what it’s doing with it, and what might happen to it in the future. The Beauty Brains, The History of Witchcraft, Hunting Warhead09 Feb 202000:35:26

Welcome back, we have more podcasts for you! Liz recommends a podcast on her second passion besides murder podcasts: beauty. The Beauty Brains podcast breaks down what's really in your cosmetics and whether you need them, Zane gets occulty with The History of Witchcraft (which is more about the history of trash humans) and Nick does a deep dive into the world of criminals on the Dark Web with Hunting Warhead. Then it's on to the reviews of last week!

Liz Recommends: The Beauty Brains

https://thebeautybrains.com/

“We’re here to help you cut through the confusing, misleading and sometimes false information that the beauty companies bombard you with. Our goal is to explain cosmetic science to you in a way that’s entertaining and easy to understand. We believe the more information you have, the better you’ll be able to find products that you like at a price you can afford. So, you can listen to the advertising. Or advice from a friend. Or what your stylist tells you. But if you want to really understand cosmetic products in an unbiased, scientific way, Ask The Beauty Brains. You’ll get answers from a team of scientists who have no sales pitch and nothing for you to buy.”

Perry Romanowski is a writer, cosmetic chemist, Inventor, scientist, instructor, futurologist, and thought leader. He’s also the founder of Chemists Corner blog and training program. He also has the longest running streak done while joggling.

Valerie George is a cosmetic chemist, science communicator, educator, leader and avid proponent of transparency in the beauty industry. She works on the latest research in hair color and hair care as Vice President of Research & Development at a leading salon brand.

The Beauty Brains was founded by Perry and Randy Schueller, two cosmetic scientists with decades of experience in formulating and testing beauty products. Randy and Perry recorded the first 165 episodes of the Beauty Brains. Randy retired from the show in 2018.

In addition to Perry and Valerie, other scientists will write for the website on occasion. Some of these individuals want to be able to express their honest opinions and share their knowledge without fear of losing their day jobs so they’ve adopted brainy character names like the Left Brain, the Right Brain, and our personal favorite, Sarah Bellum.

So far there are 200 episodes and counting.

For both: Whatever topic floats your boat.

Nick Recommends - Hunting Warhead

How do you take down a criminal network that’s hidden in the shadows? How do you rescue child abuse victims who could be anywhere in the world? Hunting Warhead follows the journalists and police on a global mission to expose the darkest corners of the internet. What they discover shocks them. Host Daemon Fairless tracks down the investigators, survivors and criminals themselves. A co-production of CBC Podcasts and the Norwegian newspaper VG.

In the 1980s, racing prodigy Randy Lanier shot to stardom at the Indy 500—and funded his racing through a secret double life as one of the biggest pot kingpins in American history. Now, after serving nearly 30 years in prison, Lanier's tale of weed, speed and the road ahead highlights society's changing relationship with marijuana, and the legacy of those already incarcerated for it.

Once more we have a theme week! Our first for the year! This week our Castologists all bring a live podcast to the table for your enjoyment! Liz tells us why she is a bad feminist while sharing The Guilty Feminist and Nick and Zane get the Very similar idea of sharing a news game-show podcast - Have You Been Paying Attention? and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! respectively!

Liz Recommends - The Guilty Feminist

https://guiltyfeminist.com/

Liz is a feminist but… She hadn’t listened to The Guilty Feminist until recently. This one has been going since 2015 … sometimes it seems weekly, sometimes more, sometimes less over the years.

“Ever felt like you should be better at feminism?

Join comedian Deborah Frances-White and her guests for this comedy podcast, recorded in front of a live audience. Each week they discuss topics "all 21 first century feminists agree on" while confessing their insecurities, hypocrisies and fears that underlie their lofty principles.”

Blackout, 30 For 30: The Sterling Affair, and Best Judies19 Jan 202000:32:11

Look it was only a matter of time before Nick brought another sports podcast. He swears it's more about racism but we will have to listen to 30 For 30: The Sterling Affair to find out. Liz has found a podcast by the people who created the Castology-fave Carrier. It's called Blackout, its apocalyptic and it stars Rami Malek. Then Zane gets some "friends of Dorothy" together for Best Judies, an LGBTQIA+ podcast that celebrates the people that made and continue to make up the community. Then REVIEW TIME.

Liz Recommends - Blackout

https://www.qcodemedia.com/blackout

From the same studio as Carrier comes Blackout starring Rami Malek. Blackout is an “apocalyptic thriller as a small-town radio DJ fighting to protect his family and community after the power grid goes down nationwide, upending modern civilization.” Blackout stars and is executive produced by Rami Malek and produced by QCode and Endeavor Audio.

It has similar immersive sound design style to Carrier, staring Cynthia Errivo, a podcast that was a universal thumbs up recommend from the Castologists last year, though not quite to the same degree. It’s not as much a solo story as Carrier was so doesn’t haunt the listener as much. BUT it is an eerie post-apocalyptic look at how much we rely on electricity and phones and what would happen if they were suddenly taken away. Written and created by Scott Conroy. Directed by Shawn Christensen. Presented by Sonos.

For both: start from the start as it's a serial.

https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/blackout/id1447513097

Nick Recommends - 30 for 30: The Sterling Affair

https://www.espn.com.au/nba/story/_/id/27414482/when-donald-sterling-saga-rocked-nba-changed-forever

The Sterling Affairs is a story of power and scandal in Los Angeles. When an audio recording of a racist rant by then Clippers owner Donald Sterling was leaked online in 2014, it caused an uproar that changed the NBA forever.

But Sterling had been a problem for decades -- in basketball, real estate and more. Why did it take 30 years to finally hold him accountable?

"The Sterling Affairs" is a five-part series from 30 for 30 Podcasts and The Undefeated, produced in collaboration with Western Sound. The series is reported and hosted by ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

For either: Start from the start!

https://30for30podcasts.com/sterling/

Zane Recommends - Best Judies

Zane is starting the year with pride by bringing Best Judies to the table. This incredibly positive Australian podcast is based in Sydney and aims to celebrate ALL of the Best Judies in our lives. From iconic and important members of our LGBTQIA+ history, to those who are stamping their heels in the dirt today – the Best Judies podcast is about REAL gay life from the big city and the small town, right across the country. The term 'Judy' comes from as far back at WWII, used as a code to describe someone who was gay or a 'Friend of Judy' (Garland). Warmly adopted to describe our best friends, this podcast will show case those colourful, wonderful and previous people who make up the community.

For Nick & Liz: Whichever one appeals, you may recognise some names on the guest list.

BONUS Nick's Audition14 Jan 202000:21:28

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a Castologist? We, even if you haven’t you are about to get a brief window into the audition process we subjected Nick to before he could join our exulted ranks.

Zane threw him a curveball in this one, just to see how he would handle it. Listen at your own risk, as things get weird!

In this episode we talk about ‘Believed’ (which NIck has recommended on our regular episodes) and ‘Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast’ (which Zane had been hiding away for just such an opportunity).

The Secret Room, The Press Box, and Monster Presents: Insomniac12 Jan 202000:31:29

This week Zane has a secret... well, many secret in fact. His recommendation is The Secret Room and looks at the stories no one ever tells. Nick takes a look at the media taking a look at politics through a comedic lens with The Press Box. And then Liz brings a podcast not because she loves it but because she's not sure. Does she actually like Monster Presents: Insomniac or does she just really want to like it?

Liz Recommends - Monster Presents: Insomniac (or does she?)

https://insomniacpodcast.com/

For the first time ever, Liz is bringing a podcast she isn't actually sure if she likes or not. I mean, she wants to like it because it's an interesting twist on the true crime podcast but... she just isn't sure. GROUP CONSENSUS TIME!

“This podcast began with a simple, scary premise: to research the disturbing and horrific routines of lesser known serial killers. Host Scott Benjamin wanted to learn more about what made them tick, and why they did these terrible things. But, slowly, Benjamin’s research started to affect him, consuming him day and night. It followed him home at night and into his bed. The work turned him into an insomniac.”

See, Liz’s instinct would be to, um, STOP RESEARCHING KILLERS if her sleep was affected. But no, Scott has decided he needs to work through it to be able to put it to bed, so to speak. Is he actually becoming derranged himself? Listen to find out.

For both: Pick any one except the Genosee River Killer because goddamn that's a hard listen.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/monster-presents-insomniac/id1454411295

Nick Recommends - The Press Box

The Ringer’s Bryan Curtis and David Shoemaker catch you up on the biggest media stories, from sports to politics and everything in between.

For either: Take ya pick!

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-press-box/id1058911614

Zane Recommends - The Secret Room

http://www.thesecretroompodcast.com/

What’s the one thing you’ve never told anybody? Ben Hamm explores the stories no one ever tells in The Secret Room. This is an interview podcast where the host, Ben Hamm, talks to people from all over the world about the secrets they have kept hidden away.

Scriptnotes, The Podcast For Laundry, and The Irrationally Exuberant05 Jan 202000:30:42

Remember when Nick recommended the super-niche podcast Containers? You know, the one about containers of the shipping variety? Well Liz decided it was time for a niche podcast war and here we are with The Podcast For Laundry. Zane has a rather theatrical listener submission with The Irrationally Exuberant, and Nick goes to Hollywood with Scriptnotes. Then it's time to let you all know what we thought of last week's recommendations.

Liz Recommends - The Podcast For Laundry with Brett Davis

https://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/the-podcast-for-laundry/

When Nick decided to bring the super-niche podcast Containers (about, you guessed it, fucking shipping containers), Liz knew she had to out-niche him as payback. And here we are with The Podcast For Laundry.

“When we brought comedian and laundry enthusiast Brett Davis to “talk suds with his buds” on our network, we could never have expected the seemingly affable host and innocuous topic (laundry) to result in this. Regrettably, we are contractually obligated to present The Podcast For Laundry, and apologize to the many guests dragged into Brett’s endless downward spiral. Listener discretion is advised.”

In every episode, Mr. Davis, or an obnoxious, inept version of himself, talks to a friend in a laundromat about washing clothes. Segments include “What’s Your Terge?” where guests discuss their preferred detergent, and “Bleach, Please,” where they talk about something that bothers them about laundry. Each episode is filled with banter gone horribly wrong.

For both: any Tom Scharpling ep, or the hilarious ep with Allie Goertz where Brett pitches his laundry-themed musical.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-laundry-podcast-with-radley-carolla/id1254592653

Nick Recommends - Scriptnotes

Screenwriters John August and Craig Mazin discuss screenwriting and related topics in the film and television industry, everything from getting stuff written to the vagaries of copyright and work-for-hire law.

For either: Take ya pick!

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/scriptnotes-podcast/id462495496

Zane Recommends - The Irrationally Exuberant

https://theirrationallyexuberant.com/

Back with another listener submission, Zane has brought in The Irrationally Exuberant. Reid Messerschmidt delivers this podcast (which is also art) this constists of a stream-of-conciousness, scripted, absurdist take on history, pop culture, animals, religion, conspiracies, music, books, language, the paranormal, insects, Johnny Appleseed, The Harlem Globetrotters, McDonald's, Satan, God, humanity, crows, Reptilians, alternative medicine, bees, Eddie Vedder... and the list goes on. You really need to listen to this one to understand what it, in fact, is.

For Nick & Liz: Pick one that appeals!

Ladies We Need To Talk, The Wonderland Murders and 161929 Dec 201900:28:59

Liz takes a gamble this week, recommending a podcast that the lads are very much not the target for: Ladies, We Need To Talk. Then Zane recommends something we're surprised wasn't on Liz's list with The Wonderland Murders. Nick rounds off the recommendations with a deep dive into the origins of slavery in US history. Then as always, it's review time and we look at our podcasts from last week.

Liz Recommends - Ladies We Need To Talk

https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/ladies-we-need-to-talk/

"Want to know how to close the orgasm gap? Riding your hormonal rollercoaster blindfolded? Can’t find contraception that works for you? You’re not the only one.

Ladies, We Need To Talk is a podcast for women, by women, that isn’t afraid to dive head first into the tricky topics we often avoid talking about. Join host Yumi Stynes as she tears open the sealed section on life. With sensitivity, personal stories, and serious smarts, this is for women who feel the squeeze between work, their private life, and their pelvic floor."

For both: Pick a topic, any topic!

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/ladies-we-need-to-talk/id1277424411

Nick Recommends - 1619

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/podcasts/the-daily/1619-project.html

In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed. On the 400th anniversary of this fateful moment, it is time to tell the story.

“1619” is a New York Times audio series hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones.

For either: From the start. Or episode 3.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1619/id1476928106

Zane Recommends - The Wonderland Murders

Moonshot, Keli Lane: Problem Child, and Sonic Boom22 Dec 201900:31:11

Each of the hosts has brought a very "them" podcast this week: Zane with science, Liz with true crime and Nick with sports. (Liz is already going 'Ew,, sports'). Respectively they're recommending Moonshot, Keli Lane: Problem Child and Sonic Boom. Then it's review time and they gang have a few things to say. Especially about Containers.

Liz Recommends - Keli Lane: Problem Child

http://www.problemchildpodcast.com/

Liz thought she knew all about this case as she followed it quite closely on the news. She was wrong. This particular investigative podcast has never before seen or heard information that makes the case all the more confusing.

This podcast is Brisbane-based and hosted by an amateur investigator obsessed with deep driving into true crime, is a mum, and has undertaken studies in Criminology and Law. They plan to tackle more Australian cases in the future.

"In our multi-episode investigative podcast series, we will explore the case of Keli Lane – the Australian woman convicted of murdering her newborn infant, Tegan. We will explore why Keli concealed three pregnancies from everyone around her, and we will thoroughly examine the trial process, court documents, and delve deeply into the background of Keli Lane.

"We will explore Keli’s current situation in Silverwater Women's Correctional Facility in NSW, Australia, and document her attempts to free herself from prison along with help from the RMIT innocence initiative and ABC exposed – who are advocating on Keli’s behalf for a Judicial Review.

For both: Start at the start and listen to as many as you feel compelled to.

Nick Recommends - Sonic Boom

Did Seattle ever have a chance? Who are the villains in this story? Hear from the NBA legends, politicians, die-hard fans, business executives, and more as The Ringer’s Jordan Ritter Conn unearths never-before-heard truths about the NBA’s greatest heist.

Zane Recommends - Moonshot

It has been too long since Zane has recommended a science podcast! And this week he has an australian science/buisness podcast to recommend - Moonshot. Moonshot is a podcast focused on people chasing ‘moonshot’ ideas that seem almost impossible. Explore the world's biggest ideas and the people making them happen. Self-driving cars, jetpacks, 3D printed food, or a trip to Mars? Moonshot talks to the people who are at the forefront of all this rapid change to find out what the future of humanity might actually look like. Hosted by Kristofor Lawson and Andrew Moon.

David Tennant Does A Podcast With, Smart Enough to Know Better, Containers15 Dec 201900:29:24

New Patrick/Nick is well and truly finding his feet as a Castologist but what will the group think of his latest recommendation... Containers? About shipping containers. Yep. Meanwhile Liz get her science and comedy on with Smart Enough To Know Better, and Zane recommends a rare celebrity interviews podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast With. Then it's on to the reviews from last week!

Liz Recommends - Smart Enough To Know Better

https://smartenough.org/

Dan and Greg had a passion for science and for arguing about it at length and in public. When it was pointed out how entertaining they were they put together the podcast and started to agree more often. Since then they've named the Earth's sun, travelled back in time to help win the war and dissected a gremlin all while following the scientific method.

Science is fun, and when Greg and Dan step in, learning about it is too.

Greg's worked for CSIRO and is currently a science communicator for ICRAR.

Dan is a web developer, performer and MC.

They have 40 years of experience between them on the stages of Brisbane and are 2 thirds of the team that put together the best selling plays .'Speed the Movie the Play', 'titanic the movie the play', and the 'Die Hard the Movie the Play'.

For both: You're gonna ignore me anyway, so pick something you wanna know more about.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/smart-enough-to-know-better/id378712127

Nick Recommends - Containers

Containers is an 8-part audio documentary about how global trade has transformed the economy and ourselves. Host and correspondent Alexis Madrigal leads you through the world of ships and sailors, technology and tugboats, warehouses and cranes. At a time when Donald Trump is threatening to toss out the global economic order, Containers provides an illuminating, deep, and weird look at how capitalism actually works now.

By The Book, Odd Tonic, Moonrise08 Dec 201900:33:05

It's New Patrick/Nick's third ep, has he found his feet? Has he filled Old Patrick's shoes? Do we even remember who Old Patrick is anymore? No theme this week, but we are still bringing the podcast gold. Liz lives her life through self-help books with By the Book, Zane gets creepy and kooky with a very Addams Family-style podcast Odd Tonic, and New Patrick/Nick delves into the sci-fi world with a bit of Moonrise. Then as always we review last week's submissions and give them a thumbs up or down.

Liz Recommends - By the Book

https://bythebookpod.com/about-us

When Liz gets anxious, she reads self-help books because hey, if you know everything possible about how stuff works, you're less likely to stuff it up right? RIGHT? Enter her new podcast obsession By The Book.

"Half reality show, half self-help podcast, and one wild social experiment. Join comedian Jolenta Greenberg and her skeptical friend Kristen Meinzer as they live by the rules of a different self-help book each episode to figure out which ones might actually be life changing.

"By The Book was named one of the best new podcasts of 2017 by NPR. The New York Times selected By The Book as their Podcast Club Pick in Fall of 2017. And Bust Magazine named By The Book one of their Top Ten Bets for Winter 2017.

"Jolenta Greenberg is a New York-based comedian, podcaster, pop culture commentator, and self-proclaimed reality television historian. Jolenta created and co-hosts the podcast, By the Book; other podcasting work includes story editing for Risk, and producing for Freakonomics. Kristen Meinzer is a long-time audio producer and host, and head of nonfiction programming at Panoply. In addition to cohosting By The Book, she also cohosts When Meghan Met Harry: A Royal WeddingcastReview."

For either: Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, The Secret, The Sleep Revolution

Nick Recommends - Moonrise

“Truer, but also darker.” This is the real origin story behind America’s decision to go to the moon. The story we learn starts with Sputnik, then President Kennedy’s challenge, and ends with triumph: an American flag on the lunar surface. But in the 50 years that have passed since the moon landing, as presidential documents have been declassified and secret programs have been revealed, a wilder story has begun to emerge. “Moonrise,” a new Washington Post narrative mini-series, digs into the nuclear arms race of the Cold War, the transformation of American society and politics, and even the birth of science fiction, to unearth what really drove us to the moon.

Join host Lillian Cunningham as she uncovers a story that has so much to reveal about America -- and about the dreams and nightmares of being human on this Earth.

The Adventure Zone, Chompers, Happy Face01 Dec 201900:33:53

It's that time of the year where it's the holidays, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and a bit like Festivus for the rest of us. So your friendly Castologists decided on a family theme. (Collective aw). Zane heads into the Dungeons and Dragons universe with a familial twist with The Adventure Zone, New Patrick/Nick embraces his inner child with Chompers and Liz manages to find murder in the most unlikely of themes with Happy Face. Then it's on to the reviews from last week. What did Liz and Zane think of New Patrick/Nick's very first recommendation?

Liz Recommends - Happy Face

https://www.thehappyfacepodcast.com/

Who could have predicted Liz would have interpreted the Family theme to include murrrrrrrrder? (Pretty much everyone). But still, this IHeartRadio show is a doozy. Think the words of the actual killer in his police interviews, interspersed with interviews with his daughter about the red flags the family missed as their patriarch was becoming a notorious serial killer.

"For Melissa Moore, 1995 was a nightmare. That’s the year the teenager learned her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was a serial killer. It’s also the year Melissa Moore’s doubt spiral began: When you look like your father, and you share his intelligence and charisma, how do you know you’re not a psychopath, too? Happy Face is the story of Keith Hunter Jesperson, his brutal crimes, and the cat and mouse game he played with detectives and the media. But it’s also the story of the horrific legacy he gifted his children. Join Melissa Moore as she investigates her father’s crimes, reckons with the past, and wades through her darkest fears as she hunts for a better future.

"Melissa Moore is an Emmy-nominated Crime Correspondent for the Dr. Oz Show, Executive Producer and host of LMN's "Monster In My Family.” Melissa is a recognized expert on the topics of recovery from trauma, domestic violence and serial violent crimes. Moore was raised Melissa Jesperson, daughter of the infamous “Happy Face” serial killer, Keith Jesperson. Growing up in a small town in Washington state, she survived the escalating trauma from her home life and the man she called her father. Today, she frequently shares her insight and background with survivors seeking healing from violent crimes and abuse through her work and bestselling book, WHOLE: A Guide to Self-Repair (2016 Rodale)."

For both: Serial-style podcast so start from the start.

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/happy-face/id1434649680

Nick Recommends - Chompers

Make tooth time easy with this morning and night tooth brushing show for kids and ADULTS TOO.

Kids AND ADULTS TOO will hear jokes, riddles, stories, fun facts, silly songs and more, that’ll keep them giggling - and brushing - for the full two minutes that dentists recommend.

Chompers will have kids AND ADULTS TOO reminding parents that it's time to brush, not the other way around!

For both: Any of em'!

Zane Recommends - The Adventure Zone

https://www.maximumfun.org/shows/adventure-zone

So, what exactly IS a "family" podcast? How about a podcast where three brothers and their dad get together play a game? And what if those brothers were part of the podcast royal family? Justin, Travis and Griffin McElroy from My Brother, My Brother and Me, Sawbones, Schmanners, Wonderful! Trends Like These, The Empty Bowl, Run. A Doctor Who Fancast, Still Buffering, Positiviteeny, and From Death Till us Blart, have recruited their dad Clint for a campaign of high adventure. My favourite season is Season 1...

That's Not Proper, Bad Batch, Believed24 Nov 201900:30:41

This week’s episode features a REVEAL! Who has replaced Patrick? We mean, OLD PATRICK. It’s NEW PATRICK! HA, you thought we’d tell you their name, but we didn’t. So ya’ll are gonna have to listen to find out who they are and what they are about. Speaking of listening, this week’s podcast recommendations are Bad Batch, Believed AND That’s Not Proper. Then it's on to the reviews from last week.

Liz Recommends - Bad Batch

https://wondery.com/shows/bad-batch/

Yes, yes we know, Liz loves her Wondery podcasts. Deal with it because this one is a good one. Like the other ones.

"Patients are offered a miracle cure, but instead they end up rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The race is on to track down what went wrong with several patients in Texas before more people get hurt. The trail leads to a stem cell company with a charismatic CEO, and to an entire multibillion dollar industry where greed and desperation collide. Laura Beil, the award-winning host and reporter of “Dr Death,” returns for this six-part investigative series from Wondery."

One of the most nuts things about this podcast is that Beil had a six hour interview and unrestricted access to one of the main characters in the story, Liveyon’s CEO John Kosolcharoen. This is a story where it's really hard to tell who the bad guy is, and your opinions are gonna flip several times.

For both: Start from the start.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/the-bad-batch/id1226598945

Nick Recommends - Believed

https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510326/believed

How did Larry Nassar, an Olympic gymnastics doctor, get away with abusing hundreds of women and girls for two decades? Believed is an inside look at how a team of women won a conviction in one of the largest serial sexual abuse cases in U.S. history. Nick thinks you should listen to the whole thing, but also make sure you’re mentally prepared.

For both: Start from the start.

https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1438898081?mt=2

Zane Recommends - That's Not Proper!

This is a listener submission, and it is one of those submissions that took Zane about 5 minutes to latch on to. It was immediate and strong. That's Not Proper! is a podcast hosted and created by Cori Asuncion, a 46 year old mother of seven children who has decided to break the silence of her generation and has come to the realization that things aren't always what everyone says they are, being proper is subjective, social and spiritual awakening and finding humor in the chaos.

Noble Blood, Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt17 Nov 201900:27:25

This week’s episode is full of drama as one Castologist announces (DUN DUN DUN )their departure from the podcast. Who will it be? Who would be crazy enough to leave the most kick-ass podcast ever? Which Castologist will hold a petty grudge forevermore? And which Castologist is the mature one who is determined to keep the podcast on track? This week’s podcast recommendations are Noble Blood and Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews and a fond(ish) farewell. Stay tuned next week to meet the newest Castologist on the block!

Liz Recommends - Noble Blood

http://noblebloodtales.com

It’s true crime, history-style! Liz manages to find a way to listen to stories of murder and mayhem, and do some learning too! Host Dana Schwartz gets into stories of royalty gone wrong, in this IHeartRadio podcast produced by Lore’s Aaron Mahmke.

“Noble Blood explores the stories of some of history’s most fascinating royals: the tyrants and the tragic, the murderers and the murdered, and everyone in between.

The world is full of ill-fated love affairs, bad decisions, and family drama, but for a monarch, the personal will determine the fate of nations.

And when you’re wearing a crown, mistakes tend to mean blood.”

Zane Recommends - Creative Processing with Joseph Gorden-Levitt

Zane is showing his creative roots again with this relatively new podcast from one of his favourite creatives! Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets into the nitty-gritty of how a wide variety of creative people do what they do. Listeners’ questions inspire conversations between Gordon-Levitt and a range of creative guests, from Hollywood notables like Rian Johnson and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, to behind-the-scenes heavyweights like casting director Mary Vernieu, and from political visual artist Shepard Fairey to indie sonic songstress, Yuka Honda, and more.

Rabbits, Baby It’s Cold Outside, The Glass Canon Podcast10 Nov 201900:38:08

It’s November so we’re going for a Fiction theme for NaNoWriMo. Zane goes back to one of the originals in podcast fiction land with Rabbits, Liz looks at an audio drama designed to create awareness of homelessness through storytelling with Baby It’s Cold Outside and Patrick gets down with his inner and outer nerd with The Glass Cannon Podcast. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews!

Liz Recommends - Baby it’s Cold Outside

https://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/podcast

Chris O’Dowd and Anne-Marie Duff star in this three act radio drama that delves into the difficulties faced by those who find themselves homeless, especially around the holidays. Liz was particularly tickled with this one because not only was it a good dramatic production, but it was created with crisis.org.uk to raise funds for the homeless. Liz thinks using theatre and drama for social good is very good indeed.

“Written by award winning screenwriter Regina Moriarty and directed by Virginia Gilbert, the show is a thought-provoking journey, finding humour in the darkness whilst hitting home the impact of homelessness in the UK.

“Baby, It's Cold Outside was developed by Duck Soup Films, in association with Crisis. It marks the launch of Fremantle's scripted podcast label, Storyglass, which will commission and develop original scripted ideas from storytellers around the world.”

For Both: listen to the whole thing from the start. It’s short.

Pat Recommends - The Glass Cannon Podcast

https://glasscannonpodcast.com/

Fictional you say? I don't ordinarily deal in fiction when it comes to podcasts but I suppose I'll make an exception considering the circumstances. As you may well know I'm a huge fan of D&D, and this podcast is D&D adjacent. These guys are playing Pathfinder, which is D&D for nerds, it has more nitty gritty rules. They're hilarious and terribly entertaining and there's a plethora of episodes so please enjoy.

https://thedoodlerpod.com/

#truecrime #produced #journalism

The Golden State Killer. The Unabomber. Ted Bundy. You’re probably familiar with these serial killers. But in the mid-1970s, another monster terrorized San Francisco’s gay community. He was coined “The Doodler,” and he may have been responsible for as many victims as the Zodiac Killer, yet you’ve probably never heard of him. Plagued by a complicated investigation, a frightened public, and the hesitation of many to come forward, the case went cold, and a killer walked free. Nearly 50 years later, a renewed hunt for a forgotten serial killer seeks to change that.

Anthem: Homunculus, Frank and Beans, Sean Carroll's Mindscape03 Nov 201900:33:29

Oh, it's you! Welcome! We've got a wide range of interests with today's recommendations: think science, sex and weird musical stuff. Zane looks at a Luminary exclusive bursting with Hollywood and Broadway star power in Anthem: Homunculus. Liz has a new interest in dating podcasts thanks to her new podcast Ghosts of Boyfriends Past so she's grabbed Frank and Beans from the listener submissions list. And then Patrick looks at a super approachable hard science offering with Sean Carroll's Mindscape (while being very hungover). Then it's on to the reviews of our spooky Halloween ep last week.

Liz Recommends - Frank and Beans

https://www.facebook.com/Frank-Beans-A-Sex-and-Relationship-Podcast-193991901415725/

Liz is getting into relationships and dating podcasts now that she's launched her own and Frank and Beans jumped out at her from the submissions pile. She loves the on-air chemistry of show hosts Beth and Brian, and the way they get the male, female perspective on some of the most important issues in the world of love and sex.

"Frank and Beans is a biweekly podcast that covers the ups and downs of dating, relationships and sex with a female and male perspective, making the world a better place to date."

For both: whatever topic takes your fancy.

Pat Recommends - Sean Carrol's Mindscape

https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/

Who's Sean Carrol you say? Only a theoretical physicist from the university of California. He specialises in quantum mechanics, cosnology, and gravity. He also hosts a rip roaring podcast. These episodes are typically an interview with a scientist or a science adjacent professional. It's good gear, get it in ya.

For Zane & Liz: It's all good

Zane Recommends - Anthem: Homunculous

The time has come and Zane is recommending a Luminary exclusive podcast. BUT it is a truly unique and possibly game-changing musical podcast written by John Cameron Mitchell who wrote and originated the the role of Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Anthem: Homunculous is the story of broke, failed artist Ceann Mackay (John Cameron Mitchell) as he launches an app-based “tumor telethon” to crowdfund his survival. Carrier, Lore, Spooked26 Oct 201900:41:48

Spoooooooky Halloween everybody! This week's episode is all about the creepy, kooky and downright spooky so we've found podcasts to recommend that are (hopefully) guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Liz recommends an immersive drama featuring some star power with Cynthia Erivo, Carrier; Zane looks to this mortal coil with real-life supernatural encounters in Spooked WNYC; and Patrick takes a look the frightening history behind common folklore with the podcast that spawned an Amazon Prime TV series, Lore.

Liz Recommends - Carrier

https://www.qcodemedia.com/carrier

The main reason Liz got so, erm, carried away with Carrier was the immersive experience factor. Thanks to excellent soundscapes and use of surround sound, you really feel like you're in the episode and experiencing every eerie thing the protagonist is experiencing.

"What happens when a truck driver picks up a loaded trailer, but has no idea what’s really inside? Tony, Grammy, and Emmy award winner Cynthia Erivo journeys down a dark and lonely highway in this original scripted thriller from Qcode and creator Dan Blank. With immersive audio techniques that create a dimensional listening experience, the audience is strongly advised to use caution, wear headphones if possible, and listen... carefully."

For both: It's a serial so start from the start and listen with headphones for a full experience.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/carrier/id1468956772

Pat Recommends - Lore

https://www.lorepodcast.com/

Hosted by Aaron Mahnke, Lore is an award-winning, podcast about true life scary stories. Each episode revolves around a them a takes a dark little dive into some of the darker nooks and crannies of history. These pieces run for about a half hour and include 2 or 3 stories, that's just value you can't turn down. New eps drop fortnightly on Mondays.

https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/lore/id978052928

For Zane & Liz: It's all good homies

Zane Recommends - Spooked WNYC

This podcast is produced by one of Zane's old favourites (that has yet to be recommended) Snap Judement. Presented by Glynn Washington, Spooked features true-life supernatural stories, told firsthand by people who can barely believe it happened themselves. Be afraid. Let's Talk About Myths, Baby!, Say Why to Drugs, None Dare Call It Ordinary!20 Oct 201900:31:14

You need some podcast recommendations? Well, you’re in luck! We have three new podcast recommendations for you as well as our reviews of last week’s recommendations! Zane has another listener submission this week with the all-things-weird podcast None Dare Call it Ordinary!, Liz goes mythical with a Greek Mythology podcast with a feminist bent and Pat brings us a science-based drug podcast. And don't forget to stick around for our reviews of last weeks podcast at the end!

Liz Recommends - Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! A Greek and Roman Mythology Podcast

https://www.mythsbaby.com/

"Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby! is a Greek and Roman mythology podcast.

But it’s not your average Greek and Roman mythology podcast, this one is told by a 30-something Millennial with a penchant for cursing and a feminist attitude. The stories are deeply researched, thoroughly told, and they don’t hold back the details that have been sugarcoated and treated with kid gloves over the millennia since they were originally told.

There’s violence, assault, and so, so many gods transforming into animals to have their way [with women and nymphs]. Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby! is casual and fun but equally knowledgeable and will leave you with a deeper understanding of the myths and the people who told them those many, many years ago." Hosted by Liv Albert, this podcast is great because it's a nice chatty (even though there is only one person talking) podcast that makes history and myths super accessible.

For both: I like the Hercules/Heracles series because that guy was actually kind of a dick.

Zane Recommends - None Dare Call It Ordinary!

https://www.nonedarecallitordinary.com/

Another Listener submission! This one is an interesting artifact as it seems to combine a few common themes that Zane like to bring to his fellow castologists. Part true-crime, part history, part comedy, the hosts Dylan, Brent, and Forrest dig into the unusual, unorthodox, and downright unsettling beliefs found at the depths of the Internet and the heights of paranoia. They are kind of a podcast on the history of ideas, except the ideas come mainly from cranks, con artists, extremists, frauds, and other chronic failures. Whether they promote pseudoscience, alternative medicine, fringe religions, radical politics, or revisionist history.
