50. Nurse as the Patient: The Morning After Surgery28 Jul 202300:10:20

It was just over 12 hours after leaving the OR when I recorded this episode. I had a mastectomy the day before. I had a very short night of sleep and I was still wobbly when I got up in the morning. I had a pretty good memory of getting ready to be wheeled to the OR, being in recovery, and being awakened by the plastic surgeon before 7am on post op day 1.  It was a completely novel experience, as is the journey ahead, as I navigate breast cancer life. This is my patient experience, on the flip-side of healthcare.

The Gift of Life - Aging Well, Aging Smart, and Wisdom for the Journey is a book authored by Martha L. Henderson, GNP, D.Div., and Meg Mindell, LCSW. The life and work of Martha is the origin of this book. Camilla Taft Hicks, Martha’s niece, in collaboration with Meg, brought the manuscript to publication after Martha’s death. This book highlights the passion of the authors for celebrating the later years of life, just as the earliest moments in life are celebrated with so much anticipation and preparation.

In this episode, nurses have an opportunity to hear stories of living and dying well. Older adults are frequently encountered in the work nurses perform. This book is rich in author reflections, patient and family stories, and resources, all intended to trigger thoughts and conversations and provide insight into the later years of life.

Meg shares with listeners about the role of an aging life care professional. Learn more about the role from the Aging Life Care Association (https://www.aginglifecare.org).

19. Take Control of your Money and Achieve your Dreams with Nurse and Financial Coach Amanda Jacob27 Sep 202200:32:25

Careerwise Nurse guest Amanda Jacob, RN-BSN, is a financial coach who helps nurses take control of their money and mindset. Amanda will tell you about her work life balance and how she has achieved it in just 5 years working as a nurse. Also, Amanda shares how she and her husband paid off an $80,000 debt in 1.5 years.

Amanda coaches nurses on how to achieve what they want in the future, including building up opportunities to step away from the bedside (i.e. working part-time, retiring early, etc.).

About Amanda:

Amanda began her professional career as a Registered Nurse because of a desire to help people. Early in her professional life, she and her husband were making over $100,000 and still living paycheck-to-paycheck. They knew something needed to change and found financial coaching, which resulted in a life-changing shift in their money, from that moment on. She and her husband found freedom in their lives by creating financial freedom. From this experience, Amanda realized she  wanted to help other people experience that same mental clarity around finances.

Amanda says she  couldn’t shake the feeling that financial coaching was what she was meant to do and nursing has given her  the skills to coach. She now helps other people master their money through planning, budgeting, execution, and accountability. She is on a mission to help other nurses gain control of their finances and start living the life they dream of.

Are you a new nurse searching for your first job or an experienced nurse seeking a new opportunity? In this episode, you will be given strategies for making a lasting impression during conversations that are less formal than job interviews.

Do you recall conversations you have had with other nurses at work or during a clinical rotation? Do you see a particular unit as a place you want to be as a new nurse or for a new role? Have you introduced yourself to the unit director, supervisors, or charge nurses?

Tips Amanda discusses:

Be mindful of first impressions

Be comfortable talking about yourself

Be prepared to tell your story

Nursing students - Are you building your network at school and in clinicals? Treat your clinical rotations as working interviews.

All nurses - Do you connect with people you meet at work or meetings, seminars and conferences? Networking leads to opportunities that may qualify as your first job or a dream job.

Guest Amanda Guarniere is an Ivy-league educated nurse practitioner, keynote speaker & career mentor for nursing professionals who want to find and land their dream job. After years of clinical practice, including work as an emergency room nurse practitioner, Amanda developed her business and podcast. 2. Nursing Self Care on the Job: Professional Self Care Priorities for Nurses - Taking Breaks, Finishing on Time, Sick Calls and Vacations26 Jun 202200:15:34

This episode opens the door to the discussion of professional self care. Host Natalie D'Itri discusses 3 tips for managing self care on the job.

1. How many hours into your shift until you actually eat, drink or go to the bathroom? Do you take a break during your shifts? Does anyone on the unit sit down to eat or get off the unit during break times?

2. Do you finish your shift on time? Is the unit culture focused on finishing on time or is it typical that the staff leaves 30 minutes (or later.....) after the end of a shift?  If you work in an office role or outpatient setting, do you walk out the door at your scheduled finish time or is the day typically longer?

3. Have you ever skimped on sick time to save more paid time off for vacation days? How are sick and vacation time allotted? Is time off from one PTO bank? Do you get to take planned vacations? Is it hard to get time off when you want it?

Are you working your dream job or dreaming of another job?  Are you making sacrifices in your personal and professional life at your current job?
