If everyone around you seems to have things figured out it can be daunting to make the change… any change. You may be wondering if you are making the right choice, fear may be holding you back and you may be worried about how your decision will impact your salary. You're not alone in having these worries. Be inspired by these case studies and know that you too can transform your career.
I’m going to be running one last cohort of the Career Change Maker program, starting in September 2024. How to position yourself as an ideal candidate - whether you have been in the same role for years, the title you want doesn’t match your exact work history, or whether it’s an entirely new industry – learn how to showcase what you bring to the table and why you are the only choice for the role.

00:23:32
In this episode:
In today’s episode of the Career Change Maker podcast, I reflect on the lessons learnt from producing 250 Career Change Maker podcast episodes! I share insights from the last 5 years and how we got to our 250th episode.
When I first began, I didn’t have all the answers (I still don’t) so I chose to talk about what made sense to me. I looked for a way to get my voice out there and make an impact, and that’s exactly what I did, right here in this podcast.
This has been a journey and there have been so many lessons along the way, which I share with you in this episode, from learning how to adapt and evolve to the importance of being authentic and celebrating milestones (including this one!). Tune in to discover them all.
Summary:
What you will learn in this episode:
The value of learning as you go – don’t wait until you have all the answers; if you show up with dedication and determination, you will be adding value.
Why it’s so important to change and adapt as you go – by listening to feedback you can find a better way of doing things.
The importance of remembering that you never know who is paying attention - don’t allow a lack of acknowledgement to keep you from showing up. Recognise that what comes easily to you doesn’t always come easily to others - you matter.

# 170: Stop Seeking Career Change Advice From The Wrong People
25 Mar 2022
00:16:29
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk on the topic of - Stop Seeking Career Change Advice from the Wrong People. I talk about why you need to recognize that in some areas in your career having external insight can really help.
The reason why I dive into this matter is that the advice that you gain from different people can shape your perspective, and that perspective can then inform the types of bias that is created in your mind around what is possible for you.
Episode Highlights
· 01:25 – Internal bias is an area that many women struggle with but sometimes overlook.
· 04:30 – There are two things I want you to consider when you're thinking about who it is you're seeking advice from when it comes to your career development.
· 06:50 - If you find yourself seeking out advice from the people and that advice helps you stay where you are, then perhaps you could consider this as productive.
· 08:12 - The person that you are asking advice from doesn't have all context, then is it fair to ask them for that advice, and expect that you're going to get an answer that you can rely on?
· 10:00 – As some of my family members and friends don't understand what I do as a career strategist, when it comes to me making career decisions about my business growth, I'm not going to go to them for advice.
· 11:55 – Seeking external guidance helps you in what you want to do in your career, and that can't always happen on a surface level, which sometimes takes time.
What you will learn:
· It is so important to make sure that you're surrounding yourself with people who are helping you to grow and to stretch but it also highlights the impact that other people's perspectives can have. This is why I want to talk about seeking advice from the right places when it comes to your career.
· The first thing is when you're thinking about whom to ask for advice then ask yourself why you asked that person. The second thing you want to be thinking about is who am I seeking advice from, what does that person have to bring to the conversation, or what insight do they have?
· Seeking advice from someone who has the information and is qualified enough to give you an answer is going to help you to move forward in your career. This is because not only are they going to be able to give you the answer, but they're going to be able to ask you questions that can be so powerful. Those questions will allow you to step outside of the trade that you've been on, and allow you to shift your perspective and think about things from another angle.

# 169: How To Change Industry, Get A Promotion And A Salary Increase, All At Once
19 Mar 2022
00:23:42
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I want to talk about how to change the industry, get promoted, and secure a salary increase, simultaneously. I'm going to be discussing one of my clients who were able to make the move off and share with you three things that she focused on, and helped her to be able to move forward into a role that she was excited about.
The reason I am talking about this topic is that there are professionals who are considering making some kind of move in their career but they assume that making a move is going to require them to start at the bottom.
Episode Highlights
· 02:26 - My client had been at the same company for 11 years, and she was at the stage where she was no longer feeling aligned with the values of the organization. She knew that she wants to make a change.
· 06:13 - The first thing that my client did was to address the assumptions around what would be possible for her moving forward. When she did that, she was able to open up her mind to the possibilities and permit herself to explore.
· 12:10 – She was able to see the overlap between the industry that she was in before choosing the oil and gas space and see what the opportunities were in the industry that she was targeting.
· 14:47 - She stepped into a senior leadership position all because of the way that she positioned her existing experience not because she has experience within the industry or within that particular industry, doing that particular role.
· 16:16 – For my client what helps her was, being able to understand the problem and then linking her expertise and her previous experience to how she would approach those problems going forward.
What you will learn:
When you're thinking about the assumption that I am a professional with 10 plus years’ experience, so I'm going to have to start at the bottom, I want you to think about, how could that 10 plus years of experience serve me differently? How that could be applied in a different setting?
Look into your experience, not from a high level like, I spent these many years in this role, but what have you been doing? What excellent feedback have you got from clients? What approach do you take? So all of those things, understanding those to high levels allow you to then articulate the value of those things to a potential employer, even if it's in a different industry.
If you're moving into a different industry, but you understand what the challenges are, you're able to move beyond just looking at a job spec and saying, oh, do I tick those boxes, but be speaking to how you can be the solution to the problem that they are facing and how all of that relevant experience that you have identified helps you to be the best candidate for the role.

# 168: The One Thing You Need To Make A Successful Career Change
11 Mar 2022
00:22:33
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the one thing you need to make a successful career change. If you are someone who is feeling frustrated in your current role then the likelihood is that you're taking this approach of starting to look at job boards, and searching for opportunities.
I think that the people who are willing to innovate, who are willing to adapt, and who are willing to look at different ways of doing things, are the ones who are going to succeed and rise both inside organizations and industries in general.
Episode Highlights
· 04:30 - There's a time and a place for everything, and when you don't do things in order, you end up sabotaging your results.
· 06:15 - When I talk about commitment, it comes down to you making a decision, like, is this something that I want to do or if I am ready to make a career change?
· 09:05 - The reality is, when you're in the midst of something, or making a transition it isn't necessarily easy, but if you have that commitment, then you can go back to that.
· 11:00 - If you are sitting in your organization, and you are saying this isn't aligned with my values then I want you to know that you are showing up spending a lot of time. You are contributing there, when you could be making a contribution somewhere else, and be moving towards making the type of impact that you want to make.
· 19:10 – I want to encourage you that the one thing that you need is the commitment to the process or commitment to figuring out what this role needs to look like.
What you will learn:
There's a misalignment between how you're showing up and how you are putting yourself out there in the market, and the type of person who's looking for someone to hire within their organization. So if you are thinking about making a move, and you're not sure what that looks like, slow down, and pause, don't start updating anything just yet.
Commitment to the process is the biggest thing, commitment to saying that I'm going to make a career change so that it's not dependent on what the outcome looks like. If the commitment is not there, then the likelihood of you staying in the course and you do what is required to make this transition is going to be slim.
The people that sit in positions of authority are making a huge impact on the way that we do things and the way that we do life. So, if you are in your situation, think about what impact you could potentially be making if you were to take yourself out of that environment where you don't feel like it's the right place for you to be.
When it is possible for you to design the type of lifestyle that you want, it is also possible for you to enjoy the work that you do and make an impact through it.

# 167: Changing Careers In The Midst Of A Pandemic With Nakisha Hicks
04 Mar 2022
00:48:16
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am interviewing an amazing guest who works with women to guide them in their careers by assisting in equipping and strengthening them to discover their potential. I am talking to Nakisha about what it has felt like to make a career change amid a pandemic, some of the things that she had to think about when she was deciding when and how she would make her transition.
Episode Highlights
· 05:12 – Nakisha wasn't doing what she wanted to do anymore. She had met the goals that she had set for herself, but she wasn't doing that purpose visibility work that she wanted to get.
· 09:06 – It’s important to recognize when you're making a shift but you may require to be a new version of yourself.
· 15:24 - As you increase your level of self-awareness, you're able to do things that you need to do whether this is in a business or within a role that you're in, in a way that works for you.
· 27:03 - If you're trying to figure out what you're good at, think about your family and your friends. What do they often ask you for help with? Says Nakisha.
· 31:17 – Nakisha mentions, if you sit down and you do the pre-work and self-reflection, then it makes the job search so much easier.
· 41:35 – Nakisha has a signature program geared specifically towards HR professionals. If you are interested in that then definitely follow her.
· 44:46 - You can get creative with the stuff. There's no one way to do a thing, but whatever the goal is, you can get it done.
What you will learn:
It's being thoughtful about the decisions that help us to transition better. It's thinking about things from a tactical perspective, but also thinking about the mindset shifts that you're going to have to do. It is doing the research and understanding, what are you working with, and how does that translate into the next world that you’re trying to go into?
We often don't use all of our talents in our workspaces, because we're boxed into an agenda that whatever the organization has for us for that position that they hired us for. So, if we're lucky, sometimes we'll be able to kind of branch out and do those things that are according to our expertise, but it's when you step out and you become a business owner, you get to fully operate in those gifts that you had.
When you're thinking about transitioning, it is about, who you know, it is not about what you know. It is about being able to stretch yourself come out of your comfort zone. So, if you want to move around, you definitely can. But you have to put the things in place and you have to grow and cultivate your networks.

# 166: Want To Make More Impact And Have More Satisfaction In Your Career? Do This...
03 Mar 2022
00:17:48
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about what you need to be doing if you want to have more impact and satisfaction in your careers.
This topic is important to talk about because there are a lot of people who are feeling dissatisfied right now in their careers, and they need to identify the real problem. So, today I will be discussing the importance of getting to the crux of what the issue is because the reason why you may be experiencing dissatisfaction in your career is that there is a misalignment between your expectation and the reality of what's happening for you.
Episode Highlights:
· 01:25 – I work with a lot of women who come to me and say that they need to make a massive career move but they do not know what to do.
· 04:10 - I think sometimes you may think that this is how I'm going to feel when I reach a certain status.
· 06:20 - While external factors are important, they are not everything that we need because once you land the role, and secure that pay check, then you've got to do the role.
· 08:25 - When you set those expectations, it is so much easier for it to be aligned because the expectations are set in terms of how I like to show up in terms of my previous exposure in the world of work and my understanding of what hasn't worked for me.
· 10:20 - I would encourage you that if you want to be doing something more impactful, and I want to experience more satisfaction in your career then take some time to assess what has been my markers of success so far.
· 12:40 - The groundwork is necessary that so many people just gloss over and then find themselves hoping for the best, or staying in the same role thinking that it gets better.
· 13:20 - I've got a few spots open inside my coaching program - ‘Career Change Maker Program’ for starting in March.
What you will learn:
When there's a misalignment between expectation, and what happens in reality, that is where dissatisfaction can occur.
We can often be focused on external factors as a society because that's how we are taught when it comes to developing in your careers is looking at external factors. Those markers that are very much externally determined are the things that can sometimes drive us in terms of our decisions.
If you're hopping from one role to another, and you're not finding that satisfaction in this current role, hoping that it gets better, either way, there's an opportunity here for reflection. If you want more impact and satisfaction, and you're not finding it so far, then Janine suggests that you approach things differently.

# 165: Three Ways To Confidently Change Your Career
23 Feb 2022
00:21:29
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about three ways to change your career with confidence. The reason why I'm talking on this topic is that I speak to so many people who have been feeling about wanting to make a career change for way too long.
Episode Highlights:
· 04:15 - In today's life I want to break down how you can be approaching your decision-making process differently so that you're able to move forward with confidence.
· 06:05 - When it comes to your career, you can either make a Shift, Pivot, or Leap. So I will break down what I mean by each of those.
· 07:40 - A pivot is where you're deciding to do something slightly different. So you're no longer doing the same type of role but you're using your transferable skills and your skillset to work in an environment that may be similar to what you've been working in.
· 11:00 - Having focus allows you to move forward with confidence instead of spinning your wheels where you are, and considering the other options means that you're leaning into what's important for you and creating your criteria.
· 14:05 - I've had so many conversations with my clients who have seen opportunities and got excited about them, and when I faced them, I was like this sounds good.
· 16:20 – To summarize, you can change your career with confidence by making a shift into a new role, you can make a pivot in your career, and lastly, you can make a leap where you decide I'm going to leave this role.
· 17: 30 – Many people are staying in roles for too long because they just don't want to make that decision, and ultimately, they are missing out on an opportunity to make the type of impact they could make if they were in the right role.
What you will learn:
There are three different ways that you can be making a career change. I talk about all three ways (Shift, Pivot, and Leap), and how you can be applying them to your situation. A situation like either you say where I'm right now or if I need to do something completely different, and hence the career shift can feel too much. However, there're different options, it is not an either/or situation.
These different options are available, but it is important to consider what is important to you right now in this stage of your career. Because sometimes when we try to make career change decisions, it feels like a struggle and there is resistance around moving.
Ultimately, whether you decide that you're going to make a Shift, Pivot, or Leap it comes down to you making a decision and moving in your career rather than staying in the role that you're in right now feeling frustrated, feeling like you're being overlooked and undervalued.

# 164 Do You Want More Than A Role That Looks Good On Paper
22 Feb 2022
00:20:53
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, as part of career change strategies, I talk about if you want more than a role that looks good on paper.
I often have conversations with people who are contemplating some kind of move in their careers, and what I hear is the frustration that people find themselves in around their careers where they feel they should be at this stage in their career.
Episode Highlights:
· 02:25 – Whilst it's great to be able to acknowledge what peers are doing if that pathway isn't right for you, it doesn't matter what other people are doing. But we're used to looking at the benchmark of what everyone is doing, as the standard.
· 04:55 - It's exhausting to be showing up on a day-to-day basis, doing your best work, but knowing that this isn't actually what I want to be doing.
· 08:45 - The biggest mistake that I see within the career space, or when people are looking at making moves, is the assumption that I need to just throw everything out the window.
· 11:10 - Oftentimes, when people that I work with inside of my program, do this to identify the thing that is causing them to feel to not want to do the work, they realize that maybe they do want to do something completely different.
· 16:40 - My encouragement to you today is to focus on what, and why you want to do it because that shifts things. If you're unclear on what the next step is, start with why are you unhappy where you are. That's the first thing that can help you to start determining, where you should move to.
What you will learn:
The reason that you get stuck in figuring out what to do next is that it's too big. You need to be able to identify what are the things that are causing me to not like the work that I'm doing or not feel stretched in the work that I'm doing. Because when you work with the specific, that is our starting place where we can say, “If I feel like this is missing, what kind of shift or change would I need to make so that I could get that?”
Lean into making data-driven decisions, and asking the right questions. So you can determine what it is that you need to change. You can analyze from the information and data that you already have.
For you to have more from your career, and not just have a career that looks good on paper, you need to take time, to do an audit and understand what is it about what I'm doing that's not working, and recognize that the assumptions that you might be making about what is required for you to feel better about what it is that you're doing which may be incorrect?

# 163 Why You Deserve A Better Role So You Can Stop Feeling Unhappy At Work
18 Feb 2022
00:18:26
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about why you deserve a better role at work so you can stop feeling unhappy.
The reason I am talking about this topic is that sometimes people are in roles where they're not performing to their capacity, which means feeling that they are not operating at 100%, but they could be doing so much more.
Episode Highlights:
· 02:38 – For someone who is a high achiever and focused on being their best, internally they feel that they need to be doing their best, and need to be operating at a certain level.
· 06:30 - The goal in life is not to attain some imaginary ideal but to fully find and own your gifts.
· 08:50 - The reason why the job role is not fully aligned to you as a person is because you haven't considered yourself in the decisions.
· 11:40 - It takes courage for you to recognize that this is a long game if you think about the length of your career, and how long do you want to be in a position where you're not able to show up fully as yourself.
· 13:30 - I want to encourage you if you are someone who's been saying I need to do something different. You started every year for the last few years saying the same thing, but yet you're still in the same role. I want you to think about what is it?
· 15:55 - The Career Change Making Program formerly known as the Career Clarity Academy is my signature coaching program, which is a transformational coaching experience focused on helping you to develop and advance in your career.
What you will learn:
Oftentimes, people are in roles where they're not performing to their full capacity, but they could be doing so much more. They're settling in roles where they feel they don’t want to be doing this. So you must pay attention to the cause of feeling unhappy at work.
When most professionals look upon their ideal role at the beginning that seems to be an ideal role to them. But as they move forward in the role they realize that they don't feel like they are bringing their whole self to work or they feel it is not fully aligned to them.
The reason you feel unhappy is that there's a misalignment between the work that you're doing on a day-to-day basis and who you are as a person. There's a misalignment between what's required of you, and who you are naturally, and when there is that misalignment, then there's tension.
Nothing is permanent, things change, you change, value shifts and perspectives change but just because a decision that you made years ago was made, it doesn't mean that you have to stay there. It doesn't mean that you can't transition, and do something different.

# 162 The #1 Career Lesson I wish I Learned Sooner
16 Feb 2022
00:21:14
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the number one Career Lesson I wish I had learned earlier.
I thought I would talk on this topic and share some tips because this came up in a few conversations that I've had recently. I'm going to share with you some of the lessons that I've been reflecting on from my legal career and then how that's translated to where I am now.
Episode Highlights:
· 01:45 – When I first started as a Lawyer, I had no idea what I was doing, as many of us when we started in our careers.
· 07:20 - In my journey, the moment when I had the time to do that reflection was when I went on maternity leave, and I started asking myself the tough questions like what do I want, and it was hard to answer.
· 09:30 - At that point, I decided that I was going to leave private practice, and then I went and worked as an in-house lawyer. But it took me considering from the inside out what the best next move was versus from the outside in.
· 12:50 - I wish I knew earlier how important it is for you to fully understand yourself and your preferences when you were seeking out a new opportunity.
· 14:40 – There are a few things that are misaligned when you are making a shift, but you can make some small changes where you are right now and things would be massively improved.
· 16:10 – Another lesson that I wish I had learned earlier would be to understand myself better so that I could trust myself better in my decision-making and not have to rely solely on external factors or opinions or social constructs or the norms within my industry.
What you will learn:
The number one lesson is the importance of understanding yourself and then flowing from that trusting yourself because when you take the time to understand yourself, it becomes less about external factors and more about whether it is going to work for you. When you understand what your work preferences are, and what your strengths are, then it becomes easier for you to make the decision.
When you ask yourself, what do you want, it requires an honest answer, and honesty requires courage because if you are committed to a particular path and you've invested time, energy, and resources to get there then you ask yourself what do you want? If what you want is not aligned with where you are then it takes courage to admit that because then the question is what do I do about it?
Taking the time to establish what is that I want and what is missing can help you determine where I need to go next. Also you should be doing it in a way that is methodical, strategic, and allows you to feel confident in the moves that you're making.

#161 Career Change Is Not Supposed To Be Easy
10 Feb 2022
00:21:43
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the fact that Career Change is not supposed to be easy.
I am interested to talk about this topic because oftentimes when we want to move towards our goal, we can be prevented from moving forward as it feels too hard.
Episode Highlights: · 01:44 – I want to share with you the backstory because I think it would be useful for us and also inspiring.
· 03:55 - Lots of people have writing books on their bucket list. They say one day, I'd love to write a book.
· 06:10 - The first time that you do anything, it's going to be hard.
· 08:35 – It’s you who got to decide that am I going to stay where I am or am I going to make a decision that I'm going to try and do something different.
· 10:25 – Recognize that when you do hard things, you get good at doing hard things. So, you can do harder things and achieve bigger goals and go for what it is that you want.
· 12:50 - The program is designed to not just make a decision but it lets walk you through a step-by-step process so that when you make your decision, you know that it's the right one.
· 16:45 – There are ways that you can position yourself and make sure that you know how to negotiate correctly so that doesn't have to be the case for you.
· 18:05 - I created the ‘Career Change Maker’ program and a Career Change Making Method because it pains me to see so many amazing, and talented women fall into the category of coasting female professionals.
· 19:20 - If you like the sound of becoming a Career Change Maker then I invite you to make an application for this program.
What you will learn:
The first time you do anything, it is always difficult. But the more and more you do that thing, the easier it gets, because you stretch your ability, you adapt, and then you grow. So, it’s the same principle when it comes to making a move in your career. On your first day at work, you feel nervous but gradually you adapt to the environment.
Taking steps now, whatever it is you're considering is going to impact what happens later on down the line for you and your career. The decisions that you make and the opportunities that are open to you, if you are thinking about taking the plunge or making a move transitioning right now, then do it.
If you don't know what to do, let's figure out what you should be doing. Let's not just stop there, and just say, well, it's just too hard to figure out because the reality of it is you're going to have to revisit that conversation. If you're just parking it all the time and saying I'll come back to it, you're not making any progress.

# 160 Who You Spend Time With Will Impact How Quickly You Make A Career Change
03 Feb 2022
00:15:57
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about why who you spend time with is going to impact how quickly you're able to make your next career change.
The reason why I want to focus on this is that we need to be thinking about what is holding us back from moving towards the career change and career development that we ultimately want to make.
Episode Highlights: · 01:30 – I start by sharing a story of a client that I worked with. · 03:15 - The thing that made the biggest difference was a community so my client was able to surround herself with a group of people who had a completely different perspective to those that she would normally spend time with. · 06:20 – I encourage you to look beyond just adding people into your network and instead focus on what the point is of expanding your network. · 08:15 - Being around friends, family members, and people who have seen you in your current role, with your current status, can hold you back as that's how they will see you - this will make it difficult for you to view yourself in another way. · 10:05 - If you don't have the right people in your network then you should start thinking about the strategies and actions you can take to fill those gaps. · 11:55 – I created this program and the Career Change Maker Method because it pains me to see so many amazing, brilliant women not reaching their career potential.
What you will learn:
Successful people and those in leadership positions are going to have mentors and coaches. They are going to have people who are guiding them or who are supporting them, and helping them to get to where it is that they want to get to. These types of people can act as a guide for you too on your career journey.
Expanding your network is about building relationships. Building relationships will help open doors and opportunities for you. They're going to introduce you to the right people. It also helps to elevate or shift your mindset around what is possible for you, and that is even more powerful.
If you're surrounding yourself with people who are of a positive mindset, who have a growth mindset then you too are going to have that but if you are surrounded by people who don't, then it's hard for you to push through and maintain that. So I encourage you to start thinking strategically about your network.

#159 - How To Position Yourself For Better Career Opportunities in 2022
26 Jan 2022
00:19:12
In today’s episode I discuss how to position yourself for better career opportunities in 2022. This is a time of the year when everybody is talking about New Year's resolutions and forming new habits.
I also share how you can be approaching things differently when it comes to your career and career development.
Episode Highlights:
· 01:40 – I share that I want to talk about how you can do things differently in a sustainable way. · 04:30 - The reason why so many people fail when it comes to setting new year resolutions. · 07:30 – I want you to be thinking like an athlete as you approach your career this year. · 09:40 – I suggest that you as an individual get to be the CEO of your career and need to do things on a day-to-day basis. · 10:40 - The second thing that you need to be doing this year, so you can position yourself correctly is be strategic. · 12:25 - If you're looking for strategy, and you're not sure exactly what you need to be doing, it’s possible for you to get support with that. · 13:00 - The last thing you need to ask yourself is: do I have the resources that I need to meet the goal? · 15:10 – You need to identify what resource gap is there, and what you need to be paying attention to so that you’re able to step up to what it is that you want to do. · 16:15 - If you're surrounded by people who are of a similar mindset, and who want the same things that you want, it's so much easier for you to just be moving, be amongst people where there is momentum, and there is movement. · 17:30 – I share how I’m planning to bring the community over to LinkedIn. This is going to be a think tank of different professionals who are looking at changing, advancing, and developing in their careers. · 18:35 – I reiterate that to be successful, have your plan, be strategic, and arrange the essential resources; focussing on these three things is going to help you to get to where you want to go this year.
What you will learn:
1. Research has shown that only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions will follow through and be successful on those - They have great intentions at the start but by February or March, it goes a bit left, and then they don't follow through. So there are three things that I talk about, that you should be focused on throughout the year when it comes to your career development. 2. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail - Because if you don't have a plan, you cannot make it to reality. So having a plan, taking the time to map out, and putting the plan in place so that you can be successful is important. 3. A bonus thing you can do - Surround yourself with people who are doing what it is you want to do, or who are on the journey. Getting into a community is super important as that is going to accelerate your results.

# 158 - Changing Careers And Challenging The Status Quo With Legal Edge
01 Jan 2022
00:31:50
In today’s episode I talk with two awesome guests - Donna Sewell and Helen Goldberg. They both share their journeys, what led them to leave the traditional legal route and start the business which is called LegalEdge. They share what they are doing now to facilitate flexible working and opportunities for lawyers to work in a way that's different, and impactful.
What you will learn:
It takes time to create the ideal business model
There's no such thing as failure - you either win or you learn
Making sure your team is happy will lead to faster growth as a company
Donna shares, they set up LegalEdge to help businesses who needed an in-house lawyer on a flexible basis and didn’t want to hire. Donna was working In-house for a number of tech companies over several years. During that period of time began to think about a business model to facilitate flexible working and opportunities for lawyers.
After being terminated during maternity leave, Helen was keen to do something different so joined Donna to help her grow the business.
I asked Donna and Helen "how challenging was it to develop a model that wasn't the traditional law firm model that everybody was following?"
Donna highlights "it was quite challenging as it took some time to think through the model and how it would work and to not be just doing things the same way as every law firm was doing at the time. It got easier as time passed on and it feels like less of an uphill battle in terms of the education process."
LegalEdge was a fully functioning remote company that championed flexible working way before Covid and is continuing to lead the way with their people first culture.
Donna says they have been committed to finding different ways of doing things and making people aware that if they're not happy, they can do something about...13 years later and they are still making an impact and enjoying it.

# 157 - Wanting More For Your Career Is Not A Bad Thing
13 Dec 2021
00:11:21
In this episode I discuss why wanting more for your career is not a bad thing.
I also share the story of a client I spoke to recently who was experiencing self-doubt and guilt about going for a role in a different department at the same company.
Perhaps you worry about what other people might think about your career choices. Whether it’s a boss, colleague, a friend or family member, other people’s opinions can easily impact the decisions we make and inadvertently cause us to choose a different path.
When you are thinking about your career, I want you to remember it’s a two way thing. You are there for a reason, that’s why they hired you. What’s your reason for applying/ working there?
This is often why your professional development plan comes up at interview stage. If you are ambitious it’s not likely that you will stay in that role forever. Rather than being sad or thinking bad of you, a good line manager will support you in your decision to move department.
If your company knows that you’re brilliant and you can add value, they would much prefer an internal move, rather than a move to another organisation. It’s likely that they will respect the fact that you are making efforts to better your personal and professional development.
So, what makes sense for you in terms of your next role?
The time you spend at work is a lot of time. So if you spot an opportunity, you need to check in and make sure you aren’t making assumptions about the reaction you will receive.
I want to encourage you to focus less on what other people think about a decision and focus more on whether this is the right decision to be making for you.
What you will learn:
How to recognise the self-imposed barriers of career change
Why investing the time and energy into making a move is worth it
How to put your career goals front and centre, despite what other people think

# 156 - The Real Cost Of Settling In Your Career
10 Dec 2021
00:12:54
In this episode I discuss the cost of settling in your career.
A recent Gallup survey revealed that 85% of people weren’t happy in their jobs. 85%! Does this surprise you?
Perhaps you are one of the 85%.
Have you been venting how you feel frustrated and undervalued during discussions with the people close to you but not taking action?
I want you to recognise that this is something that you can change.
The fear of failure when it comes to making a career move is all too real, but essentially, you have two outcomes. You either win, or you learn.
Both of these outcomes will strengthen your ability, but it takes overcoming fear to achieve them.
You can’t separate the impact that work has on your personal life, so it’s important for you to be intentional about your career.
I want to help you bid farewell to the days of having the same conversations time and time again.
What you will learn:
• The personal, emotional and financial cost of settling in your career • How you are viewing fear • How to push past these fear hurdles and experience what’s on the other side

# 155 - How To Be More Confident In Your Career Change Decisions
01 Dec 2021
00:15:11
In this episode I discuss how to be more confident in your career change decisions.
All too often I see people waiting… and waiting… until they have a clear idea about what it is they want to do before they take any action.
How can you approach this in a way that’s going to keep you moving forward, rather than staying stuck?
I want you to have confidence!
If you've been trying to figure out your next move for ages, going around in circles, asking yourself, friends or colleagues what you should do next; the missing piece of the puzzle is within grasp.
I want to encourage you to ask, ‘What do I need in order for me to feel happy and fulfilled in a role?’, rather than ‘What is the next role that I'm going to go for?’.
You made some decisions to get to the place you are now. Just because you are no longer happy with the results of your decisions, does not mean that you will make the same mistake again. You’ve changed as a person and it’s time to take action.
Trust your ability.
What you will learn:
• The importance of defining your needs when it comes to your next role • Where confidence comes from • How to use your confidence to make informed decisions and further your career

# 154 - Stop Waiting For The Right Time...Create It
29 Nov 2021
00:17:43
In this episode, I discuss why you shouldn’t wait until it’s too late to make a career move.
I want you to have choices…
I see too many people waiting for the ‘right time’ to make a career move. And let me share with you – there is never a right time… only now.
If this is you, I would imagine it will take something big to be the catalyst for your change, perhaps redundancy or restructuring within your organisation.
The problem is, if you wait until then, there will be such a sense of urgency to you making a move that you’re not going to have the head space to consider what is going to be the best move for you.
You’ll end up looking for a role similar to what you’re doing already, something that’s easy for you to transition into, because you just need to find something.
The decision you make will be very different from the decision you’d make if you felt like you had time and options.
If you’re in a role now and you know you’re not happy, I encourage you to start taking action now.
There’s a whole process that needs to happen to take control of your career. It takes time.
I want to encourage you, if you’ve been putting things off, and you’re repeating on a daily basis ‘there must be more’, it’s probably time to spend full attention to what it is you want to be doing next.
It doesn’t always need to be a huge leap, it can be a slight shift, but you won’t realise what it is until you give it the time.
You do have control over this, so take control.
What you will learn:
How two of my clients took control of their careers before they needed to
Why it’s important to take action while you have choices

# 153 - Introducing The Career Change Maker Method
26 Nov 2021
00:27:24
In this episode, we go behind the scenes and I introduce you to the Career Change Maker Method.
The Career Change Maker Method is the methodology that underpins the work I do within my signature program and with my clients on a one-to-one basis.
When you can produce consistency of results, it is incredibly powerful and the processes and systems I have created within this method produce exactly this.
In this episode, I discuss the four phases to the unique framework that underpins my coaching, training and speaking services:
1. Self-leadership
This is often over-looked, but I’ve discovered that is so important to delve into understanding yourself more so that you can make career decisions that are in alignment with who you are and what you want. We also look at the mindset shifts that need to happen for you to make a change.
2. Unapologetic vision
After completing the work on self-leadership, you can then move onto discovering what kind of work would allow you to feel most fulfilled. I encourage you to have huge, audacious goals and visions – to not be held back by what you think is possible or impossible. Once you know where you want to go, we can then implement the next action steps you need to take.
3. Transition positioning
How are you going to transition from where you are now to making that vision a reality? It comes down to positioning and how you position your existing experience so you can leverage it – to put yourself in the right rooms, conversations and platforms so you are able to attract attention for what it is you want to be known for.
4. Rise and Shine
I want you to rise and shine in the area you’ve identified as where you want to be. You will learn how to show up, how you need to present yourself and interview to really shine and attract the opportunities you really want to, as well as negotiate the offers and make the money you really want to earn. When you learn to lean into the value that you bring and how to articulate this, it makes it easy to attract the right opportunities.
What you will learn:
The different stages of my program and the importance of each
The inspiring results of my clients who have completed my Career Change Maker Program
Answers to your questions regarding my Career Change Maker Program

# 152 - How To Make A Career Change Without Changing Income
24 Nov 2021
00:17:03
In this episode, I discuss how you can make a career change without changing your income.
This comes up time and again when I’m speaking with people about making a career move. They tell me that they’d love to change roles or careers, but the problem is that they just can’t afford to take a pay cut.
I get that. You’ve worked hard to get to where you are. It’s likely you’ve built a lifestyle to match that income and you may be the primary breadwinner in your family.
But let me share with you a secret:
Career change does not have to equate to a pay cut!
In this episode, I discuss why this is and how you can make a career change without taking a pay cut.
In fact, I share with you how making a career change can open the doors to more opportunity and pay raises. You just have to approach it in the right way – and that starts with mindset.
You will learn:
How one of my clients was able to make a career change and receive a 51% pay increase
How you can command a high salary in a new role
How to shift your mindset to believe you can make a move and maintain or increase your salary

# 151 - How To Leverage Your Existing Experience To Transition Into A New Role
23 Nov 2021
00:16:54
In this episode I talk about how to leverage your existing experience to transition into a new role.
So, you know you want to make a career move. But what next?
Most of our minds jump to thinking about what training, degree, course or programme we could take to make ourselves feel better equipped.
I see this happen all the time, but ask yourself - will that training course or degree equip you to do exactly what it is you want to do next?
Too often the answer is ‘no’, because you’re still feeling confused about what it is exactly that you want to do. A course or degree can seem like an easy option as you feel like you’re making progress (as well as buying yourself a bit of time!) but what actually works is taking the time to slow all the way down.
You need to stop and consider what it is you want to do. That means starting with assessing what hasn't been working for you in your current role, and then assessing ideally what you want to be moving towards.
Rushing this part of the process doesn’t work, but if you take the time to do this part properly, you will be able to take aligned and strategic action.
You will also realise that you don’t actually need to take all those courses - you have gained valuable experience that can be applied and leveraged in your new role. It’s just up to you to identify and articulate this value and in this episode, I will show you how.
What you will learn:
How to conduct a career audit
What to consider when identifying your ideal role
How to leverage your experience and your transferable skills

# 150 - The Identity Shifts That Must Happen If You Want To Make A Career Change
17 Nov 2021
00:30:38
In this episode, I discuss the identify shifts that must happen if you want to make a career change.
It’s so important to separate two things – who you are and what you do.
These two things can start to blur into one along your journey. After all, when someone asks you about yourself, it’s likely you mention your job role.
When you are identifying yourself as that person and you’re really rooted in what you do, there’s a problem when you decide that you no longer want to do that, you go for a promotion (hello, imposter syndrome!) go on maternity leave, or take a career break.
In this situation, so many people find themselves asking ‘who will I be if I no longer do the thing I identify myself as?’
But who you are is who you are, regardless of what you do. They are two separate things.
In this episode, I discuss how knowing this will allow you to feel confident to open your options to doing something different.
What you will learn:
How to separate who you are from what you do
The importance of articulating the value you will bring to a role

# 149 - You Have What It Takes To Make A Career Change
17 Nov 2021
00:20:04
In this episode, I discuss why you absolutely have what it takes to make a career change.
This comes up a lot when I am speaking to those wanting to make a career move – they wonder if it’s even possible for them.
They’re unsure if they can make it happen and if it’s something they should even be considering.
What I know from experience is that you CAN make a career change, and if you take the action that is required to make this happen, you will be amazed by what you can achieve.
Not only do I know that you can make it happen, I also know what can hold people back.
I cover a couple of these things in this episode and how you can move forward.
What you will learn:
How people pleasing may be holding you back
The importance of making a decision
Why you need to take time to think about what you DO want to do

# 148 - How to Know What Type of Career Change To Make - Part 3
15 Nov 2021
00:16:53
In this episode, I discuss what it means to take a career LEAP.
It’s the form of career change people talk of most, but also the one most people don’t execute on.
What happens is that they decide they really don’t enjoy their current role, and they want to do something completely different.
The problem is that this new role or idea feels so far removed from what they’re currently doing that they don’t know how they would even begin to make it happen.
They also wonder if it really is the right path for them.
Making the wrong decision feels scary, especially if you need to invest time, money and resources into it – what if it doesn’t work out?
In this episode, I discuss the tangible steps you need to take, so that you can make that career LEAP with confidence.
What you will learn:
How to validate your ideas
How to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go

# 147 - How To Know What Type of Career Change To Make - Part 2
12 Nov 2021
00:20:23
In this episode, I discuss what a career PIVOT is, and how you can decide if this is for you.
If you’re not enjoying what you’re currently doing, you might be wanting to change your role, organisation or the industry that you work in.
There’s one thought I hear that holds people back though:
‘I’ve been doing this role for years. If I were to change to something different, I will need to retrain or get a new qualification’.
In this episode, I challenge that thought. After all, if this was true, you wouldn’t see people being promoted.
Promotion is based on the skillset that you have, your potential, and the value you’ve already demonstrated. It isn’t based on experience as you have never done that role before!
If you want to move into a new role, you don’t have to have experience.
You just need to demonstrate that you have the skillset that translates into that role, to be able to articulate how you’re going to operate at that level, and cultivate the trust that you are a candidate who will know how to operate in this new space.
What you will learn:
Why you don’t always need to retrain to get a new role
The two types of career pivot and which may apply to you
Two examples of people who made a pivot without needing to retrain

# 146 - How To Know What Type Of Career Change To Make- Part 1
11 Nov 2021
00:20:33
In this episode, I discuss how you can identify what type of career change to make.
When you know you want to make a career change, one of the hardest decisions to make is what type of career move to pursue.
When you know what type of move you are making, it is so much easier to create the right type of action plan.
In this episode, I discuss how you can identify what type of career change to make.
When you know you want to make a career change, one of the hardest decisions to make is what type of career move to pursue.
When you know what type of move you are making, it is so much easier to create the right type of action plan.
In this first of a series of three podcasts, I cover the first of three options you have when making a career move – the SHIFT.
I share what it means to make a SHIFT and the most effective and efficient way to go about it.
Often, if you’re feeling frustrated or stuck in your career, you think you need to do something totally different.
You might assume the change you need to make is a huge LEAP.
But from my experience, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes you just need to make a SHIFT or a PIVOT.
Today, I cover what it means to make a SHIFT in your career and what are the steps you need to take.
What you will learn:
The 3 different types of career move.
Why making a shift is often overlooked
The 2 things that will help you identify if the shift is what you need to do

# 145 - Why You Feel Stuck In Your Current Role And What To Do About It
10 Nov 2021
00:20:16
What you will learn: In this episode, I talk about why you might be feeling stuck in your current role and what you can do about it.
Are you feeling STUCK?
In so many of the conversations I have with people, they share that they feel bored, unfulfilled and frustrated in their role. Sometimes there’s been a management change and they feel like the atmosphere has turned toxic.
There’s lots of reasons that people share with me for why they aren’t enjoying their current role.
The problem is this:
When I speak to some of them weeks, months or even years down the line, so many of them are still in that same position, feeling exactly the same way, because they haven’t taken any ACTION.
It can feel too big or too hard, so people don’t move forward.
These people know where they are now and know where they want to go. They just don’t know HOW to get there. The problem is the bridge.
In this episode, I share how you can bridge that gap, so you can take strategic steps, with confidence, to end up in a role that you love, that fulfills you and that you enjoy going to each morning.
What you will learn:
The number ONE thing you must do before you can make a change
The best way to decide on what your next move should be
How to manage fear so that it doesn't hold you back

# 144 - How To Land Your Ideal Role Quickly
29 Oct 2021
00:20:13
In this episode I talk about how to land your ideal role quickly.
Are you wanting to make a career move but you just can’t figure out HOW?
This comes up a lot when I’m speaking to those looking to land their ideal role – they know they’re not happy with what they are doing but they’re struggling to make any kind of transition as they don’t know what that looks like, or how to get there.
This makes sense. After all, it’s likely you’ve been doing what you’re doing for some time, maybe you trained for it, invested time and money in qualifications, you worked hard, you’ve progressed up the ladder…
So the thought of giving that all up and transitioning to something else is HARD. Especially if you’re not even sure what you want to transition to. It’s likely you feel confused, unprepared, apprehensive and fearful of making a change.
Here’s the thing – it’s not meant to be easy!
Doing something you’ve never done before is never easy.
And here’s the other thing – I’m pretty sure that you have a history of doing things you’ve never done before, so even if you feel hesitant, this is not impossible for you.
In this episode, I discuss how you can overcome these hesitations that are holding you back and how you can take the steps needed to move forward in landing your ideal role.
What you will learn:
· Why getting support from someone who knows the process is key · Why your personal growth should be seen as an investment and not a cost · The two options you have in approaching your goal

# 142 - The One Thing You Need To Make A Successful Career Change
19 Oct 2021
00:21:39
In this episode I would like to share with you the one thing you need to make a successful career change and that is commitment.
If you are someone who is feeling frustrated at work and you are looking for a career change it is highly possible that you are just jumping straight into looking for a new role with no real direction, as you haven't really decided what type of role you would like to do.
You may start updating your CV, looking for a new role, applying for jobs and submitting application forms. Unfortunately, this approach which has no structure and not strategic will leave you feeling even more frustrated. Why?
You haven't identified what type of role you want. You know you want to do something different but you're not quite sure what different looks like so you start applying for any role.
When you are not clear on what different looks like and you've just gone full steam ahead with the action unfortunately all the time spent submitting application forms, reaching out to organisations and updating your CV can feel like it is wasted. The scatter gun approach can lead you to not much of a return.
Instead, looking for a new role in the right strategic way and making a commitment to the process will allow you position yourself for new opportunities.
what you will learn:
The importance of establishing your commitment to the process
Why you need to stay consistent to the process
The power of using data to make your career change

# 143 - Embarking On A Career Change After Decades In Your Career With Maddy Lee-Smith
18 Oct 2021
00:28:38
There are a lot of people who consider making a career move, but many just don't take any action towards it. Maddy Lee-Smith (my amazing client) is not one of these people...
In this episode, we have a very interesting conversation about Maddy's journey from being a project manager for 20+ years, where she felt unfulfilled, to going through my program, finding new opportunities and creating a plan on how to move forward.
I’m sure many people will resonate with Maddy as she shares how she felt when she first left University - she was excited to get into the working world, believing that the world was her oyster. She found herself quickly moving into projects as a business analyst, a developer and then into project management.
However, Maddy eventually noticed a pattern that she didn't feel fulfilled in her roles, and every two years found herself moving around. She just wasn’t sure what it was that she did want…
Maddy noticed that there was a lot of information on the internet about feeling fulfilled in your role and being happy at work. She decided that she had reached a time in her life where, "I have the choice now to do something different".
Maddy joined my program and began to feel more enthusiastic and empowered, actually "believing a career move is possible for me". It was reassuring for her to be surrounded by people who had also trained for years, from different walks in life, but were feeling unfulfilled in their careers, as she had thought she was alone.
Whilst on the program, Maddy identified the importance of mindset and the beliefs that we hold. After all, if you don't believe you can, you’re not going to take the action that is required to make it happen.
We discuss some of Maddy's challenges, stepping out of her comfort zone and some of the actions she took that helped her move forward - talking to people who had already made a career change, gathering data and writing to her 75 years old self.
Maddy goes on to explain that she found the framework of my program was a game-changer for her - using data in order to make a data-driven decision, instead of a decision based on assumptions.
I explain how, as professional and ambitious women, it’s so easy to get caught up in the doing of other people’s roles, that we don't take the time to think about "what do I want?"
My program provides the space to think through what is important to you, think in new and different ways and to shift your mindset around what you think is possible.
After completing the program, Maddy now has a clear plan and new opportunities. What's your plan?
What you will learn:
How to focus more on what it is you actually want to do
The importance of building your self-belief
How to collect data for evidence to drive strategic career decisions

#141 - Stop Saying You Don't Have The Experience To Go For What You Want
29 Sep 2021
00:15:42
I'm excited to talk about this topic
I can understand why you may say you don't have the experience to go for what you want. When you look at the job specification you realise you don't have all of the skills and you also lack the experience that is required. You think the only option is to start all over again, go back to university and study for the next two to three years. So you dismiss the opportunities as an option.
What if you shifted your thinking, from "I can't do it," to "how could I do it?" Start thinking beyond the job specification, start thinking about what value you bring to your current role, what impact are you making in your organisation.
Its so easy to overlook the value you bring to your organisation because you show up to work, put your head down and do your work. It's something you do naturally so you may find it hard to articulate.
Sound interesting? Come and have a listen. . What you will learn:
How to plan your career move objectively and strategically
The importance of owning your skills and experiences
The overlooked way to bridge any skills gaps.

#140 - Why You Deserve A Better Role So That You Can Stop Feeling Unhappy In Your Work
20 Sep 2021
00:17:46
In this episode I talk about why you deserve a better role so you can stop feeling unhappy in your work.
The average person spends 90,000 hours at work in their lifetime. That is a lot of time spent, that you can never get back. Finding a role that is aligned to you, not only helps you but also improves the world we live in. The more people in the right roles, the happier people will be.
You can bring your whole self to the work that you do and make more of an impact.
A powerful quote by Gay Hendrix " The goal in life is not to obtain some imaginary ideal, it is to find and fully own your gifts ". What an interesting quote! When you started your career journey you were probably very young, saw all these opportunities and put your ideal job role on a pedestal. It is unlikely that you took YOU into consideration when you landed your current role. If you didn't think about your values, your strengths or how you like to work, it explains why you are feeling the way you feel about your role now.
What you will learn:
How to align who you naturally are with your work values
How to find a career that allows you to be yourself
The power of finding and owning your gifts

#139 - Stop Counting Yourself Out Of Opportunities
13 Sep 2021
00:12:38
In this episode I talk about why you need to stop counting yourself out of opportunities.
When we are looking for a new career or job role we often count ourselves out and we start saying "I don't have all the relevant skills required for the role, I don't have the experience to apply for the position. I think the job will be too hard and I think I might have to go back and restudy at university."
But what if you switched your perspective and really took some time out to fully understand the role, what was required, who is well suited to the position and do an audit.
Over the years you have gained so much experiences. You don't necessary have to have the exact requirements for the role if you can demonstrate and articulate that you will bring value to the company through the skills and experiences you have gained, you have a good chance of landing the role.
It's also about identifying what you want, planning when to make the move and not just jumping at the first role that is available, you need to be strategic, placing yourself in environments, communities and surrounding yourself with people who are on the same journey in order to attract and land opportunities.
What you will learn
How to identify what the right role for you looks like
The power of packaging your skills and experiences
Why identifying your skills gaps can be very useful

#138 - Is It Too Late To Make A Career Change?
07 Sep 2021
00:14:21
In this episode I talk about whether it is too late to make a career change.
When you are considering a career change there are a lot of questions that you ask yourself, such as am I too old? Is this the right time to make the move or will I have to start all over again?
You are not too old. You have gained a depth and breadth of experience that will be valuable to a future employer. If you don't make the move now, when will you make the move? Now is a good time to make that career move that you have been procrastinating about.
Making a career move doesn't have to equal starting over.
With all the sacrifices you have made. All of the hard work that has gone into getting to this stage of your career need not to be wasted. Over the years you have gained so much valuable experience which is easily overlooked. Recognise your knowledge as value then its so much easier to filter out your transferable skills for your new career path.

#128 - Changing Jobs And Getting Promoted With Jen Kantor
19 May 2021
00:21:19
In this episode, I'm excited to share my interview with Jen Kantor who was one of my amazing clients who achieved big things recently.
In our interview we discuss digging deep and asking yourself the question like "why you are feeling frustrated and stuck in your current job role or career?" "what are your personal values and are they aligned with your work values?".
Sometimes there's a misalignment and that's where your fears disbeliefs and self doubt all comes into play resulting in you procrastinating.
Jen talks about realising the misalignment and confronting it face on, finding that work-life balance and enjoying what she likes doing. And her results are outstanding in such a short timescale.
We discus that the program has a friendly approach like family supporting each other. How important it is to know you are not alone on your journey you are among other people going through the same experience despite being in different parts of the world.
