Episode 114: Make a Clear Choice, Two of Swords06 Dec 202400:18:31

Welcome back to the “every card in the deck” series. We’re back with the Two of Swords, which happens to be a stage card. These cards often suggest we are looking at a movie or a fantasy scene rather than one rooted in reality. Here, we are being asked to calm our minds to make a clear decision. The moon reminds us to use intuition; even the blindfold tells us to go inside.

Today, we’re getting into the Two of Cups. This card is about trust and equality; no one needs to worry anymore. There is so much to unpack in the Rider Waite Smith deck. Lis dives deep into the symbolism and how it relates to the meaning, while Hilary reminds us why this card is excellent for relationship readings.

We dive into the Ace of Swords and the immediacy it brings. Swords bring up thoughts, how we use our voice, and put ourselves forth for change. It puts an edge on things and brings our ideas into focus. Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi break down the Ace of Swords in various ways and how to tie the card into ways you can use the initial spark of action.

Homework: What cause can you lend your voice to? Take up the sword and think about how you can volunteer your time and money. Listen to some of our examples if you need ideas.

Episode102: Not Even Once, Ace of Wands14 Jun 202400:18:36

Aces are the first step of each minor suit. In this case, we relate the wands to the element of fire and a season. It can be the idealized focus for Wands. It’s the ember of the fire seen in the suit. It’s a spark of the idea or connection. They help focus the potential energy into focus.

Episode 101: Intro to the Minors24 May 202400:26:19

Welcome back to the cards. Hilary, Lis, and Jaymi kick off the minors. We see the minors as the day-to-day nitty-gritty items of our lives. These cards are broken down into two aspects: the numbered cards and the court cards. There are four suits to the 56 cards. Each one has its association with an element that relates to one of the four elements: air (swords), fire (wands), cups (water), and earth (pentacles/discs/coins).

We’re going to reveal the numbers as a whole. So you’ll get four episodes detailing the aces, the twos, etc., and then we’ll give a wrap-up. We’ll begin with the Ace of Wands starting next month!

Homework: Separate your deck into majors and minors. Look at the minor arcana and see what comes up. Then, do a reading with the minors and a majors-only reading to see how each reading deals with the same topic.

Episode 90 An Introduction to Tapping with Hilary24 Nov 202300:57:56

A year or two ago, Hilary started a certification process for tapping. This is a process known as the emotional freedom technique (EFT). It’s similar to the rapid eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) that Lis has been doing. It’s good to work with issues and to clear stresses in our lives. Now, doesn’t that sound a bit like our favorite tool, tarot? It may not solve the problems; however, it can help you change how you feel about it.

So, we’re here with Hilary to learn about her process and how she connects it back to her tarot practice. We even have Hilary take us through a short process of making a consistent card of the day practice.

If you have questions, contact Hilary at her website. Learn more about this on her site’s tapping page. She also has many tapping videos on her YouTube page.

Homework: Try a tapping session, whether it’s the consistent card of the day or another one.

The Cardslingers discuss the meanings of The Moon. At its core, this card represents fear and the unknown. It’s a reminder of all we have gone through in The Tower and Devil cards. Yet, this card tells us to recognize the darkness and to learn the lies. Lean into the darkness, sit with it, and learn from the shadows.

Episode 87: Everyone is a Little Bit Psychic13 Oct 202300:44:38

Happy October, everyone. Kicking off the divination month, we dive into the psychic arts, thanks to our listener question from way back when. We discuss the differences between how you can tell if it’s real or not, how to hone it in with practice, and what to do with the information after you get it.

Our listener from the UK says,

TL, DR: For those of us who are not born gifted in this regard, what can we do to strengthen our intuition and learn to understand what it shows us?

I am a beginner reader who enjoys studying tarot in my spare time. I've bought books by Rachel Pollack, Melissa's book, and Barbara Moore's Tarot Spreads book, and I take time to practice on willing friends.

One thing I know we probably can’t learn from a book is how to nourish and develop our intuition.

I appreciate that some of us on this planet are born with a stronger gift than others, such as clairvoyance or psychic ability, and it amazes me to hear how you all get clear visions and exact information from your readings.

In your opinion, can anything like this be learned, and if so, how do we strengthen and nourish our intuition so we can level up our tarot practice both for ourselves as a healing practice and in reading for others? (I sometimes think I can picture something, a kind of vision or snapshot, that I could communicate to somebody, but then I don't know if it's me inflicting my own ideas on them or if it's my intuition popping up and handing me helpful information.)

Homework: Write what you think the next day will look like in a journal. Do this for two weeks. How accurate are you?

Episode 86: The Cardslingers Weigh-in on Renaming Cards22 Sep 202300:28:14

Jaymi’s noticed something interesting happening in the tarot world. There are a lot of decks out there that are renaming cards. For example, some decks rename The Hanged Man to the Hanged One. Suits get renamed; the same with court cards. So, she put it on the kitchen table for Lis and Hilary to give some information.

It comes down to the intent behind using the tarot, who you are reading for, and how you live. Give permission for gender not to be as important in tarot. Renaming makes their power our own. Take it and own it.

Homework: What are your thoughts on renaming cards? Do you like it? Is it helpful or not?

Episode85: Uncover Your Meanings08 Sep 202300:20:33

Tarot is a language. Like any other language, speaking and understanding the components takes time. Today’s listener question asks,

Are there any cards you straight-up disagree with the description listed in the “little white book”? How did you discover the meaning it has for you?

We recommend that you take in the info when you are new and then branch out and question the experts. Read the cards how you want because you are the master at reading tarot in your style.

Homework: Look at your deck (or decks) and compare the images. Where are the synchronicities, where are the differences? Keep a list of these meanings and add your own.

Episode 84 The Star: Barn’s burnt down, now I can see the moon25 Aug 202300:27:41

Some call it the card of hope. Others see it as the calm that comes after the destruction of The Tower. The Star brings healing and space to mend. Now, you are okay; things are safer and softer. In this episode, we dive into our thoughts around this card and pull some examples from our collections. We also discuss how many decks display the central figure nekkid on these decks.

Homework: Look at your Star cards and compare and contrast. Go outside and look at the sky. Be gentle to yourself.

Episode 83: This is Not a Tarot Deck11 Aug 202300:34:07

The Cardslingers tackle the topic of reviews, criticisms, and feedback. While we tend to focus the discussion on the books we’ve done, the information can apply to your tarot business when clients write reviews or send you feedback (both positive and negative). We give some ideas on how to take the feedback and what we want to see in reviews.

Homework:

Leave a review for Cardslingers in your favorite podcast app. Ask your local booksellers if they have copies of our books for sale. If they don’t, they can order copies for you. You can help us and other authors by leaving a constructive review on our book’s page on Amazon or GoodReads.

Episode 82: Bring Out Your Towers28 Jul 202300:18:52

We stalled on talking about cards due to this ugly vibe. No one likes to get this card in a reading. We’ve hemmed and hawed long enough, and we’re pushing through this one. Today’s card is The Tower. Watch us put on our big person underoos and listen to our thoughts on this difficult card. Is it really the big bad card people think it is?

Decks Referenced:

Melissa: The Sasuraibito Tarot

Hilary: Wild Unknown Tarot

Jaymi: Creatures Tarot

Homework: Relisten to Melissa’s invocation and relax into the moment. You can get through this shit. You CAN do it.

Episode 81: Getting Touchy Feely14 Jul 202300:26:09

The Cardslingers tackle a sensitive topic of deck boundaries. How do we cleanse our decks? Who do we allow to touch our tools? We get a bit deep about boundaries, cleaning, and possession around our divination tools. Is there

There was a small side topic that was touched on in Episode 32, which made me want to ask a question. Feelings about other people touching your decks. This got me thinking about a situation I found myself in, and I’m looking for advice and opinions.

How do you all reset/cleanse your decks? What is the preferred method of the Card Slingers trio? For example, let’s say someone has touched your deck or, worse - had the balls to use it for reading without consent, and you’re trying to rekindle a relationship with that deck after the fact. Is there ever truly a lost cause outside of a deck too damaged to use?

I have put the deck back in order, smudged it, and put selenite on it. It’s sat on the shelf since then, unused. I can’t shake the disrespected feeling, and I’m hoping you all may have another option I can try before I throw in the towel and give up on this specific one.

Episode 80: Let’s Talk About Stuff23 Jun 202300:24:16

Melissa and Jaymi work on their new musical (don’t worry, it’s not coming out anytime soon). They answer a good listener question from Laura T.:

When I read cards, I like to have two rocks..a silver obsidian and a quartz wand. One anchors me, and the other I just like to hold. Are there any objects you like to have in your space when you read?

Place items around you that make you feel grounded. Keep stuff to keep away the bad vibes. Keep what you need to make your reading space feel comfortable. Anything that makes you feel calmer and happy does help readings.

We recommend that you visit local gem fairs to get good deals. The Pyramid collection also has great stuff at good prices.

Episode 79: Wearing All the Hats09 Jun 202300:39:21

Running a business is a marathon. Getting into this profession requires everyone to wear all the hats. Marketing, social media, sales, accounting. In this episode, we spend some time talking about wearing all the hats.

Homework: Look at your energy and figure out your capacity. Learn what you can do at this moment or when you’re at your best. Doing so will help you uncover what is sustainable.

Episode 78: It’s About Time26 May 202300:25:36

Understanding and developing timing in tarot is one of the true moments when you can play with your cards. There are so many different systems out there for divining “when” questions. Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi discuss various methods they know of and use. We also recommend ways that you can develop your own systems based on your personal locations and situations.

Homework: Practice timing readings. Work on your own system, start big, and then delve deeper into specifics. And ask for feedback to know.

Episode 77: We’re All Family with Nancy Hendrickson12 May 202300:55:42

The cardslingers invite mentor Nancy Hendrickson onto the cast. She helps us dive deep into her world of writing, family history, and her art of healing with blends of tarot. Nancy says, “The more you know about family, the more you know about yourself. People want their stories told.” So, it’s time to get personal with Nancy and learn more about connecting with the ancestors.

Nancy’s books, Ancestral Tarot and Ancestral Grimoire give readers a powerful method to connect to ancestors of all types. Not only do we have a birth family, but we also have a magical family. These books are meant to be worked with and used rather than swiftly read.

Her final wish for the community is to be clear about what we want and take our practices to the next level by finding our niche in tarot and to take the courage and authenticity to do our own.

We’re so grateful to have Nancy in our community and a mentor to us all. Go buy her books, Ancestral Tarot and Ancestral Grimoire. Find Nancy online at www.sageandshadow.com and on her Instagram at @nancysageshadow.

Episode 76: When Tarot Comes for You28 Apr 202300:43:03

Hilary and Jaymi talk about reading tarot for your self and Mary K Greer’s Tarot for Yourself. Strangely the two do relate, and cross over, and we feel it’s time to chat about the connections and our observations. We discuss what happens when the cards call you out and go a lot deeper than you expected for reading material. And we share stories of when tarot came for us when reading for others.

Homework: Record readings from others and get permission to write that down. See if there’s a message for you in them. Learn to discern how this happens.

Episode 110: Creepy Campfire Tarot Psychic Stories11 Oct 202400:29:14

Happy October. During this spooky season, we’ve decided to share some creepy and spooky stories we’ve encountered while being tarot readers. While some of these stories happen during autumn, they also occur year-round. So stay awhile and listen to Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi tell stories.

Homework: Play around with your protective circles and expand and contract them. See what happens when you let other sensory critters into your space. Understand when you are open to more psychic events throughout the day or the year.

Episode 75: Too Many Dang Card Meanings14 Apr 202300:23:31

Reading and understanding cards can be hard for beginners. The companion book or little white book (LWB) can be viewed as a boat or a harbor that anchors you instead of being set adrift on a sea of tarot meanings/interpretations. However, as you grow and learn, you’ll find that cards have a wide variety of meanings. So, in today’s episode, we answer two listener questions about how you figure out what cards mean to you when the LWBs have different meanings.

Homework: Keep a meanings journal. Compile various meanings for each card from all the sources you have available to you. Do it online or printed and see where things intersect and differ. Personal meanings are as valid as what “experts” write.

Episode 74: Filling in the Blanks24 Mar 202300:24:33

Usually, tarot uses the information from the cards that readers lay on the table. But what about what doesn’t show up? Can it tell us anything? Hilary and Jaymi talk about how one can read between the lines and show what’s missing from what doesn’t appear in a spread. Jaymi views cards in a spread as the main focus. When cards or suits don’t appear, they’re unimportant; things are a-ok. The real answer is what’s being shown. However, Hilary sees things differently.  Listen in to hear her framework.

Homework: Do a few readings exploring missing cards or seeing what’s not on the table. See how this expands your readings for both yourself and others.

We Recommend:

Cool.

Episode 72: Sooo Many Spreads24 Feb 202300:29:18

Hilary and Jaymi revisit some listener questions focused around spreads. This episode revisits and expands information from episode 53. Which is “what spreads do you guys use, and how to determine which to use for each client?” We recommend you have a small stockpile for various topics. We also like to create our own spreads from scratch and often use a spread creation deck. Hilary has a formula for reading spreads which is “card interpretation + positional meaning + interaction of cards = interpretation within a spread.”

Homework: think about spreads you use, and dig deep into thinking why you have them and use them.

“We must never take our elders, teachers, and mentors for granted.  They deserve the ultimate respect for passing down their experience and wisdom. To be in the presence of greatness and knowledge is a gift, one that can be taken away in the blink of an eye.

So today, thank the teachers, mentors, and wise elders in your life. Show your gratitude for what they are giving you. Honor them NOW while they are still here.” https://www.thetarotlady.com/the-hit-list-elders-mentors/

Content Warning: While we’re under an explicit tag for cussing, we get sexually explicit in this episode. So, please don’t listen to this around kiddos; we also want to be aware of those who have sexual traumas or issues around sex. We’re not making fun of anyone’s sexual kinks or labels. Our crew spans all types of sexuality.

Jaymi digs deep into her tarot library, and comes up with an amazing gem for this special 69th episode. She reads from the “sacred text” of The Sexual Key to the Tarot by Theodor Laurence (Signet 1971). And the Cardslingers crew responds and retorts. What a way to end the year.

Episode 66: Scammer Be Gone28 Oct 202200:31:14

The alternate title of this episode is “Grand Rising, Beloveds!” Be careful of how you get a witch’s attention. Scammers online, and off, are everywhere and we’re fed up with it. Even tarot decks are being “counterfeited” and scammed. Listen to our stories about scammers; being copied; or having to deal with unhappy people who think we’re frauds. Amanda sums this up by saying, “It's easy for scammers to infiltrate a profession that people don't want to recognize as "legitimate". If it was easier for tarot readers (who are published authors, who have large followings, who have online courses) to get a goddamn verification checkmark, it'd sure help…”

Episode 64 Love, Light, and Toxic Happiness23 Sep 202200:26:34

Let’s talk about the dark side of the tarot community. Readers are people, not products or things. Yes, we appreciate each other's ideas and opines. However, there is a way to come at us and befriend us, and help us through our own journey. Think about how you use your privileges towards others and remember that a person is at the other end of the communication channel. Also, there is no light without the dark, and our screw-ups are what lead us to our brilliance.

Episode 63: WTC Series: Craftsman Formula09 Sep 202200:26:37

Welcome to the last formula for our “What to Charge” series, where we show you our consummate competence. That’s right; we’re talking professional-level charging. We’re using craftsman instead of master because, at this level, you do so much more than just read and offer advice. You craft magic with the cards between your hands.

At this level, you can continue to read, but you also reach out through other avenues like teaching and writing. Many professionals turn away from the event reading and general public spaces and want 100% control of their future. Learn to cultivate the leader within and acknowledge the amazingness you are. Learn to leave a tarot legacy.

Homework: Watch StrongBad “Trogdor” for the in-jokes. Keep on learning and developing your skills in both tarot and business.

Episode 62 WTC Series: Journeyman Formula26 Aug 202200:21:34

We push the What to Charge series one level further with the Journeyman level of charging for your reading, being a Journeyman. What does this mean? Well, at this level, you’re 3 years or more off book and should be charging between $50-$100 depending on where you live. This level is about experimentation with your readings or learning what works, including dropping prices. It’s also about looking deeper at the cards or finding your niche in this niche market. At this point, you have confidence as a reader and now look at what you do as a real business dealing with all the areas a real business takes.

Homework: Think about your brand/career and who you are as a reader.
