| Storytime: A Lesson in Understanding | 12 Feb 2024 | 00:02:32 | |
This is a kid-friendly story. On the 3rd day of Lunar New Year, it is called cek3 hau2, usually people stay home as it is believed that people would easily get into arguments. Here's a story I read online a few years ago. I hope it puts you in the mood for a relaxing and happy day. This story happened on a bus. The bus was full except for one empty seat on a double seat by the window. A young man was sitting next to it. At the next bus stop, a man carrying bags of stuff boarded the bus. He signaled to the young man to move over to the window seat, but the young man refused. Then the man said, "I am so happy." I overheard it and was puzzled. Why would this man be happy when the young man refused his request? Then the man tried to talk to the young man again, saying, "I am sad." Inside my mind, I was thinking, what is going on here? A second ago, you said you were happy, and now you are sad? But then the young man heard it, and he moved over. A while later, I finally figured out. The man was telling the young man that he gets off soon (Cantonese homophones), and it's hard for him to pass over to the window seat. B IG: Cantoense4Parents.com

| Storytime: Housecleaning | 08 Feb 2024 | 00:02:15 | |
This is a kid-friendly story. On the 28th day of the lunar month, known as [nin4 jaa6 baat3 sai2 laat6 taat3], every household engages in a thorough cleaning of the entire house. Some believed that the reason for cleaning on the 28th day is because the pronunciation of "28” in Cantonese sounds similar to "easy fortune." Others believed that in some years, there isn't a New Year's Eve on the 30th, only on the 29th. If the major cleaning is scheduled for the 29th, it wouldn't provide enough time. Therefore, scheduling the major cleaning on the 28th, 1 to 2 days before New Year's Eve, is the most suitable. Here is a fun short story to brighten your day as you are doing the housecleaning to prepare for the Lunar New Year. Today, we’re pulling a question straight from The Story of Us journal (p.108): What’s something you’d love to do but feel too scared to try? We’ve all been there. We wanting to do something but feeling that little (or big) voice of fear holding us back. But wait… what do we do when our kid’s “big dream” is something we really don’t want them to follow through on? In this episode, we’ll talk about what’s actually behind answers like this, how to respond without shutting the conversation down, and how to turn it into a chance to connect (without just saying “because I said so!”).
