| Good Dogs and Difficult People: What Dogs Teach Us About Love | S10E02 | 20 Aug 2026 | 00:43:34 | |
Why do dogs seem to understand us in ways that people sometimes can’t? In this episode of the Canine Culture Podcast, host Brittany sits down with psychologist, professor, researcher, and author Dr. Chris Blazina, author of Good Dogs and Difficult People: What Dogs Teach Us About Love, to explore the psychology behind the powerful bond between humans and dogs. Drawing from decades of work in psychology and the human-animal bond, Dr. Chris explains why our relationships with dogs can become some of the most meaningful connections in our lives — and what those relationships can teach us about how we connect with others. The conversation explores how dogs read and respond to human emotions, why their presence can help people feel less alone, and how our relationships with dogs may even reflect our own attachment styles and emotional needs. Brittany and Dr. Chris also discuss one of the hardest parts of loving a dog: eventually having to say goodbye. They explore why pet loss can create such profound grief, the guilt that sometimes accompanies losing a dog, and the idea of a continuing bond — finding meaningful ways to maintain a connection with a dog after they’re gone. In this episode, you'll hear about:
At the heart of the conversation is one powerful idea from Dr. Chris: We are born to attach, but we have to learn how to love — and dogs help us with that. If you've ever wondered why your relationship with your dog feels different from almost every other relationship in your life, this episode offers a fascinating look at the psychology behind that connection. About Chris Blazina: I have been a psychologist for over 29 years. I also served as a professor for 20 years. I am an award winning author of eight books, and have been interviewed on more than 100 radio programs across the US, UK, Canada, Middle East, and Australia (e.g., NPR, BBC). Also, interviewed in various magazines and newspapers including Men's Journal, Women's Health, The Atlantic, and The Guardian, . | S5E08 - Newflands out of New Zealand | 22 Feb 2024 | 00:24:26
In this episode Brittany is joined by Fiona from New Zealand, the CEO of Newflands. Fiona shares her journey and insights into the animal industry, offering a unique perspective from New Zealand. Topics Covered:
About Newflands: 12 May 2010 is a day Fiona Robertson will never forget. Her beautiful Newfoundland dog, Rosie, was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a terminal heart condition common to the breed. Fiona, a qualified veterinary nurse, was not about to give up on her pet. She had read widely about the benefits of fish oil and decided she would try to find a fish oil supplement in the hope that this would improve the quality of her dog’s life and perhaps even prolong it. Fiona’s love of Rosie wasn’t confined to dogs. She has a love and great respect for all animals and for the environment. So Fiona wasn’t interested in any fish oil. Her fish oil supplement had to be sustainable and ethically sourced and produced. Furthermore she wanted a New Zealand product. Fiona could not find the product she wanted, so she decided to manufacture her own. This was the beginning of Newflands. Fiona started her trials using a refined human-grade product on her Newfoundland dogs. The results were spectacular: + Coat and skin health improved Neighbors even noticed the difference in her dogs’ health and wanted to know what product she was using. So now Fiona had a product and a market and Newflands was launched. As well as promoting products and expanding her range, Fiona is working alongside Massey University to provide scientific proof of the benefits of using Omega supplements. ------------------------------------------------- Follow Newflands: Newflands Website ------------------------------------------------- Shop Our Store! Welcome to the Canine Culture Podcast! In this episode, introduce a game-changing device for pet safety, featuring special guest Rusty from Rescue Retriever. Join the conversation as we delve into the origins of this innovative smoke detector developed specifically for pets. Rusty shares his entrepreneurial journey and the inspiration behind Rescue Retriever. Learn how this device, created in collaboration with his brother, a captain in the Avondale Fire Department, addresses a crucial gap in pet safety during emergencies.
About Rescue Retriever: *Twin brothers and dog lovers on a mission to rescue as many pets as we can* I have had to give the heart breaking news that a family pet didn't survive a house fire far too many times. We do our best as firefighters to rescue your pets but most times we don't even know they are there. I created this product to change that. Rescue Retriever will not only alert first responders that there is a pet in the home, but help us navigate towards the direction pet owners want us to search first. Rescue Retriever was an idea I had long ago. I am truly excited that we can now see Rescue Retriever a reality. I believe all firefighters and first responders will benefit in our fight to rescue more pet's and serve our communities. -Captain Ryan Tussing Avondale, AZ Fire Department- Co- owner Rescue Retriever As a brother to a fire firefighter and twin you would think we would both follow the same path. I left the hero stuff to my brother. As Ryan is tough in a fire fight my passion is in business. The connection between the two of us has always been strong. We work tirelessly in our fields of work and excel in high stress environments. In some ways being an entrepreneur is just as hard as a firefighter. We both look after our teams we assemble, instill trust and guidance, make critical decisions, and try to lead everyone to success in life and careers. Our skills have finally come together with Rescue Retriever. The company and Rescue Retriever that we have created not only holds the bond of the love we share as brothers but the love that all our customers have for their pets. -Rusty Tussing- Co-owner Rescue Retriever ------------------------------------------------- Follow Rescue Retriever: Rescue Retriever Website Follow On Instagram ------------------------------------------------- Shop Our Store! | S3E22 - CBD Vet Products with Dr. Marsigliano and Dr. Green | 08 Jun 2023 | 00:22:41
In this episode of Canine Culture Podcast, Brittany delves into the fascinating world of CBD for dogs. Joining her are guests, Dr. Kyra Marsigliano, Co-Founder, Chief Medical Officer, and Resident Endocannabinist, as well as Dr. Katie Green, Co-Founder and CEO of CBD Vet Products. The conversation centers around CBD Vet Products' revolutionary CBD sheets, known as SimpliSolve Sheets. These innovative sheets are designed for ease of administration, with their foldable and tearable properties. More importantly, they ensure that CBD and other beneficial hemp components are evenly distributed throughout every sheet. Dr. Kyra and Dr. Katie shed light on the profound benefits of CBD for pets, thanks to its ability to interact with various body systems and enhance the effects of naturally occurring molecules. From supporting behavioral well-being and normal neurologic function to modulating the inflammatory system and addressing occasional discomfort and stress, CBD has shown incredible potential. Our guests emphasize the importance of accurate testing and formulation, reassuring pet owners that CBD Vet Products has rigorous administration regimens and a dedicated lab that regularly tests their products. They share heartwarming stories of pet owners who were surprised by the positive changes they observed in their pets' behavior and overall quality of life after introducing CBD. The episode also delves into the inspiring story behind CBD Vet Products. It all started with Chalupa, a former bait dog who found a loving family but struggled with the effects of mistreatment and old age. Chalupa's human, Kenny, joined forces with veterinarians Katie and Kyra to create CBD Vet Products, motivated by the desire to improve Chalupa's quality of life. Thanks to their efforts, Chalupa experienced comfort and peace in his final year. About On CBD Vet Products Two of our founders are licensed veterinarians who practice medicine and surgery. We want to help as many pets as we can, and we want to work together with your veterinarian to provide optimal care for your pet. We have found several CBD companies misinforming pet owners about the risks and benefits of CBD, and as veterinarians and pet owners ourselves, this alarms us. As with anything that enters your pet’s body, there could be interactions. Just because something is natural, does not mean it is benign. Your veterinarian may recommend a follow-up after starting CBD Vet Products to ensure adequate dosing, efficacy, and may recommend bloodwork or other monitoring for your pet’s condition. We recommend consulting with your veterinarian before starting any CBD product, as well as following up regularly based on their recommendations. ------------------------------------------------- Follow CBD Vet Products: CBD Vet Products Website Email: INFO@CBDVETPRODUCTS.US ------------------------------------------------- Use codes CANINE10 for 10% Off your CBD order on www.truesevencbd.com. $1 from your purchase will be donated to Papillon Pals Rescue! ------------------------------------------------- Give the episode a listen on your favorite podcast platform and let us know what you think!. | S3E19 - Praline's Backyard Foundation with Orazie Cook | 18 May 2023 | 00:16:17
Welcome to episode 19 of season 3 of Canine Culture Podcast. On today's show, we're joined by Orazie Cook, President and CEO of Praline's Backyard Foundation. We'll be discussing the important work that Praline's Backyard Foundation is doing to help domestic violence survivors with pets. Often when a person is in a violent relationship and calls a crisis line, they are often assisted in developing a safety plan. However, when survivors share they have a pet, the crisis line operator often cannot assist them in finding a place to safely place their pet while they are in transitional housing in a local shelter. According to RedRover, only 15% of domestic violence shelters accept pets. This is where Praline's Backyard Foundation comes in. Praline's Backyard Foundation is dedicated to eliminating the barrier of a person not leaving their unhealthy living condition due to the uncertainty of how their pet will be cared for while they are in housing transition. They provide financial resources for the boarding of pets at a pet boarding facility for up to 7 days (with plans to increase to 30 days when they complete their building campaign). This service can be particularly important to survivors because it allows them to bring their pets with them to a safe location, which can provide a sense of comfort and support during a difficult time. Additionally, survivors are able to choose their own pet boarding facility or select one that is recommended based on the location of the domestic violence shelter, giving them control over their situation and allowing them to make decisions that are best for themselves and their pets. During the episode, Orazie will discuss the importance of addressing the needs of both domestic violence survivors and their pets, as they are often closely bonded and the well-being of one can have an impact on the other. About Praline's Backyard Foundation Welcome to Praline’s Backyard Foundation! We’re dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and understand that one of the challenges they may face is finding a safe place to keep their beloved pets during times of transition away from their abuser. That’s where we come in. We offer free temporary housing for survivors’ pets via pet boarding facilities and pet fosters throughout the United States. We are growing our network of pet boarding facilities and pet fosters throughout the country. Pet boarding facilities are asked to house pets for 7 days and after which pet fosters will house pet for up to 6 months. Join us in our mission to empower and support domestic violence survivors and house their pets. ------------------------------------------------- Follow Praline's Backyard Foundation: Praline's Backyard Foundation Website Email: info@pralinesbackyardfoundation.org ------------------------------------------------- Use codes CANINE10 for 10% Off your CBD order on www.truesevencbd.com. $1 from your purchase will be donated to Papillon Pals Rescue! ------------------------------------------------- Give the episode a listen on your favorite podcast platform and let us know what you think!.
