| Virgins of Training | 10 Jun 2022 | 00:39:49 | |
On May 6th, a Virgin Atlantic flight bound for New York from London was 40 minutes into their flight before having to turn back due to a “rostering issue” with the flight’s first officer. Many public comments chastise both the first officer and their lines for this egregious oversight, but was the “oops” a lack of awareness or was it the result of making ends meet on an already burnt-out system? What do you think, should the first officer have taken extra steps before boarding the flight? What steps should be implemented to prevent this from happening again? Would extra steps making other operations more difficult? Do you like this episode? Follow us on Facebook- @cancelledformaintenance, Instagram- @canxformaintenancepodcast. | Aircraft Maintenance Competition | 20 May 2022 | 01:01:25
The Aerospace Maintenance Competition (AMC) is held annually in conjunction with Aviation Week Network’s MRO Americas. Teams representing educational institutions, commercial airlines, repair and manufacturing companies, general aviation and space compete in a wide range of events that will highlight their technical prowess in aviation maintenance to find out who's the best of the best. The competition is hosted by the Aerospace Maintenance Council, a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the aerospace maintenance community. Today, Six & MBP explore some of the rules and the events that go into the AMC and how aspiring mechanics (and some seasoned ones too) should visit the event and if possible, participate in one. Big shoutout to all the teams who participated in this year's AMC event including but not limited to: the all-women team from Elevate Aviation, American Airlines, United; the service members from the US Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and the Royal Canadian Air Force; team members from various other airlines and MROs; and the student teams from various AMT schools across the US! *For all the teams that participated or have participated in previous competitions, please let us know how the competition went, some of the ups and downs, and what you would recommend to anyone who's interested in participating in a future competition!* Would like to learn more about the Aerospace Maintenance competition? | Aerobatic Plane Swaps | 01 Apr 2022 | 00:41:33
On April 24, 2022, Hulu will livestream the Red Bull “Plane Swap” stunt where two seasoned skydivers will set their planes on a 14,000 ft nose-dive, jump out of them, and then swap planes mid-dive. As amazing as this stunt will be, and we surely hope they are able to pull this off, the planning and execution of this stunt is no laughing matter. Today, we explore some of the steps it would take to pull off something like this, some of our views as mechanics, and we ask the question, “What comes after this?” Want to read more about the article we cited? | Oh Snap to Mishaps | 18 Mar 2022 | 00:57:06
In the aviation industry, some tasks feel very repetitive, tedious, convoluted, and even boring. These very mundane-seeming tasks lead us to get complacent and sometimes skip over their completion because of how superfluous they seem. When complacency sets in, that’s when mishaps occur. Today, we review two released incident reports from the US Air Force, as requested by some of our patrons, and explore how two seemingly mundane tasks can lead to millions of dollars in damage and almost resulted in loss of life. Some information have been oversimplified to preserve controlled information. **Do you have a maintenance-related mishap story? | Winged Monstrosities | 04 Mar 2022 | 00:51:43
We have all seen our share of airframes that made us scratch our heads and ask, “who designed this thing?”. These airframes, however, have correctable flaws or tolerable flaws. For today’s episode, we explore an article by BBC which covers planes that were so poorly designed, they should have never made it off the drawing board. From nine-winged aircraft to aircraft with engines that rotate around the crankshaft, these hoopties are more than just lemons, they are design monstrosities. **Do you know of other aircraft that should not have made it to production? | Forecasts & Review | 11 Feb 2022 | 00:51:30
The aviation industry saw a massive reduction in all facets in 2020, like most other industries, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovery efforts have been slow due to the many shortages (i.e. aircraft technician specialists, revenue, parts and supplies, operational aircraft, and pilots) that the pandemic has caused. Mental health and technology has also seen a rise during these times. Today we review an article published by the FAA which snapshots a prediction of what the industry may look like from FY 2021 through FY 2041 which includes all sectors of aviation from commercial airliners to Unmanned systems. There is a large emphasis on aircrew (i.e. pilots, flight attendants, and so forth) performance, error, and medication use. | Manuals Madness | Are manual subscriptions a safety issue? | 19 Apr 2024 | 00:47:09
We’ve stressed throughout our podcast that every bit of aircraft maintenance should be done in accordance with the proper maintenance manuals. We’ve further stressed that not following procedures via the manuals can lead to severe repercussions up to but not limited to losing your certification and/or causing a catastrophic incident. But what if you don’t have updated manuals, or worst yet you don’t have access to them because they are too expensive for you to get it? | Blast from the Present | 12 Nov 2021 | 00:48:59
To say the pandemic has affected us and industries across the world would be an understatement. We’ve all been in one way, shape, or form been disrupted by COVID-19. Some industries had to shut down, some had to shut down for good, and some were lucky enough to operate but at a limited capacity. As industries slowly start to recover, aviation especially has some key challenges that it will need to navigate through. | Systemic Issues | 05 Nov 2021 | 00:58:57
In December of 2020, the National Commission on Military Aviation Safety published a report citing root causes to the thousands of military aviation mishaps. The five-year study of this report recounts some of the leading causes which include inadequately trained aircrew and maintainers, aggressive operations tempo, overworked maintainers, and unpredictable budgets. Although this article focuses on the military, many of these root causes are systemic to almost every other aviation industry from commercial to contractual. | Survival of The Biased | 15 Oct 2021 | 00:43:30
We as humans tend to not focus on the “losers” and “failures” in life. Much, if not all of our focus is on “winners”, “against all odds” stories, things we can see, and things that make us feel good. This distorted view seeing only successes is called “survivorship bias”. Today we explore yet another article about what goes into survivorship bias and how it affects every aspect of our life. | I are Leader! | 08 Oct 2021 | 01:19:08
There are 5 core competencies that every leader and aspiring leader need to be familiar with and constantly practice. It's sometimes a big pill to swallow to recognize your faults and weaknesses but realizing what they are is the stepping stone to improvement. Some however, see no fault in themselves, or they force cohesion/collaboration to the point of submission. Today, we look into Indiana University's take on the 5 core staff competencies and reflect on some key experiences, both good and terrible, that highlight these competencies. | CANN Do! | 01 Oct 2021 | 01:03:28
Cannibalizations are a widely used aviation practice to bridge the supply gap to fulfill operation requirements. For today's episode, we review a report filed by the General Accounting Office (GAO) about how cannibalizations can adversely affect aviation personnel AND maintenance. We've all, at one point, have done CANNs to make a plane flyable, some at the expense of another aircraft because of operational pressures and revenue. | Human Errors & Maintenance | 24 Sep 2021 | 01:01:12
We've all heard it before, we are human and humans make mistakes. Human factors play such a critical role, especially in aviation, to the success and failure of the aviation industry. There are so many classes, certifications, and components that go in to mitigating human induced errors, that it's viewed mostly as a chore than it is as a form of mitigating risk. We look into some instances as cited by the NTSB and the FAA as to some common trends, that to this day, still occur. What are some things we can do to change this? What are some ways we can improve? We take a quick break from some of our usual antics and share some forecasts on the future of our industry. We cite some snippits of history about aviation, how the trade became popular, and share an article from CASA, our Australian counterpart to the FAA. COVID-19 has put a serious pause on most industries, some harder than others. The forecast for aviation, trades in general, is looking very positive, with newer opportunities being offered which most of us didn't have the privilege of knowing. | Koala-fications | 10 Sep 2021 | 00:32:46
To excel in a trade, you will need to attain certain certifications, licenses, and qualifications. Getting these certs (and so forth) is a long road, some could take you upwards of 16 years depending on where and what trade you are in. This is assuming you have ready access to the training or schooling required to get them. Some certification requirements have limited training seats, some have limited funding, and some only happen once in a while. What makes matters worse is those who do get certified tend to horde all the knowledge and work to themselves, thus limiting others to take part in required work to gain said knowledge and experience. To add more salt to the wound, some individuals will drag their feet and take forever to gain certain licenses/qualifications to AVOID taking on more work! Do you like this episode? | Episode 50!! Where we are now | 03 Sep 2021 | 00:39:53
We've made it to our 50th episode and our 1-year podcast anniversary! We seriously couldn't have done any of it without you, our listeners, supporters, and Patrons! When we began this podcast, it was an abstract idea and a wild shot in the dark at best. We've said it time and time again, but we really can't stress it enough, we started this podcast to highlight some of the gross underbelly of the little known lives of aircraft maintainers/specialists. It has evolved from a pseudo-therapy session between co-workers of ours and has expanded into widely known show, which we ourselves didn't know how far we could go! We take this time to reflect on some of the obstacles we've overcome, where we are now, and where we plan on going. Vote for us on the first ever Veteran Podcast Awards! We are in 3 categories- Leisure, Best Marine Corps, and Best Overall! Voting is open until September 18th. Please check out some of our friends, who are also contestants on the Veteran Podcast Awards- Women With an Effed Up Mind (IG- @_itseffedup), Kruse Corner (IG-@kruse_corner), and the Nonprofit Architect (IG-@nonprofitarchitect). We’ve all at one point or another criticized our leadership. A fair amount of those times was during a stressful situation and their decisions weren’t meeting the demand. Attitudes and mindsets change when you’re the one placed in the “hot seat” however. Being the person in charge, or better yet, the “acting” person in charge can be very tense, where vital decisions need to be made fast with little to no context to base them from. In some cases, these moments of leadership are temporary, with you being used as a scapegoat in times of duress, so more toxic and “capable” leaders can save face and preserve their image. | Zero to 100, Getting Back Into the "Norm" | 20 Aug 2021 | 00:47:40
Some of us, across all industries, have been unfortunately without work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of us have had to adapt to both work and personnel shortages. As things however start ramping back up and returning to a semi-normal pace, industries are feeling the backlash of doing more with less. Some organizations have been able to adjust, while others are grinding gears to build momentum from being idle for an extended period of time. Do you like this episode?
