Who wants to know? Michael wants to know HI BILLY! What's the one movie that gets mentioned on this podcast more than any other? Long time listeners will hardly be surprised to hear that we've recorded a Lost Boys special. Join us as we luxuriate in the sexy vampire goodness, 80s style! What's Kiefer Sutherland like in real life? Has Billy Wirth cast a spell over all women of a certain age? Who is the drummer in this band? Do DVDs still exist? Are there any other movies with vampires in? We'll attempt to answer all these questions, and along the way relate various stories of awkward celebrity interactions. And the usual digressions, obv.

| Kerrang Feb 1984 - Genesis, Thor and Manowar | 25 Jun 2024 | 00:54:25 | |
Bigamy at Christmas We’re looking at the early 80s work of Genesis and immediately make an absolute booboo regarding their hit Mama - I know it wasn’t Rapper’s Delight, it was The Message by Grandmaster Flash that was the inspiration for the laughy bit! Don’t @ me! Regardless their “The Mama Tour” video is praised to high heaven despite having one of their more embarrassing tunes on it. You know, the one about aliens. No, the *other* one about aliens. Tina Turner is live and unleashed, in an era before she was the 80s’ favourite purveyor of raunchy soft rock. Still waiting around for Private Dancer et al, she’s mostly doing cover versions. This leads us to remember Steve Coogan’s mostly forgotten comedy character, Tony Ferrino. We delve into the oeuvre of Thor, Norse god of thunder and, apparently, rock. Wendy O. Williams has been doing stuff with KISS, Manowar has been doing stuff with Orson Welles and Kate Bush gets an interview. Tune in to find out which is her favourite season! This is still Kerrang we’re talking about, by the way! Along the way we’ll talk robots, graphic design, Eminem, Lenny Kravitz (yet again) and Eamon Holmes. Er... rock and roll...? | Kerrang 176 Feb 1988 - Motorhead, Faith No More and Zodiac Mindwarp's comics reviews | 16 Jan 2024 | 01:12:39
Fresh Blood Could Kill Me Kicking off a new year and a new podcast with yet more Gen Patter, as we question whether Gen Z are into Zorro, and wonder whether it’s too late in the game to change the name of the podcast. Simply Red are reappraised, despite not appearing in this week’s issue of Kerrang! However - we do get Atomkraft, WASP, The Accused, Dogs D’amour, Paul Sabu, and Zodiac Mindwarp. Kommunikation features opposing views about Faith No More (still in their Chuck Mosely era) which somehow sends us off down a rabbit hole where we discuss Paris Jackson and Incubus. We ask is “Martha Splatterhead” a feminist trailblazer, and wonder about the state of digital watch technology in the early 80s. We lament questionable marketing for Aerosmith’s Honkin’ on Bobo and present our pitch for the Sabbat biopic. There’s big features on Motorhead (apparently Lemmy is proper into The Titanic) and Heart (which means I can bang on about Dream of The Archer again). We finish off with a new KWIZZ, which goes a lot better than the last time we tried a KWIZZ. Also: Coronation Street!

| Metal Movies | 03 Jan 2024 | 00:19:15 | |
The Lost Picture Show Like a Christmas Gift For You, but less problematic (thanks Phil!) here’s a very special BONUS podcast that we recorded way back in April. We basically spend this bonus episode promoting Reels Ov Steel, the Heavy Metal Movies podcast, who probably have way more listeners than we do, but what you gonna do? This led us to discuss what constitutes a good example of a metal movie. Can you make a case for something being metal just because you like it? We investigate. We suggest a few movies that our pals at Reels Ov Steel have since covered, but that just means great minds think alike, right? Also you get our hot takes about cinematic masterpieces like Singles and Iron Man 2. Spoiler: Garden State is not a metal movie. In addition we look at a few upcoming rock biopics and give our verdict on the value of movies that haven’t been released yet.

| Kerrang’s Kerristmas Kwizz, Digital KISS and Xmas Movies Sortout | 13 Dec 2023 | 01:04:50 | |
Get drunk enough and it’ll be fine Welcome to our Christmas Pod (for the third time). We thought we were done but then there was some IMPORTANT BREAKING KISS NEWS to cover (sorry... “kover”). Along the way we talk ABBA (obviously), The Millennium Dome, Spice Girls and horror movies that make you cry (or possibly just me). Damn you Guillermo Del Toro!
We attempt to delve into Kerrang’s Kerristmas Kwizz, but due to bad planning it doesn’t really work. At least it gives us an excuse to post a picture of Lisa Dominique looking sexual, as always. Talking of sexual, how do you like our new album art? Pretty sweet, right?
There’s some Christmas DEEP KUTZ that aren’t very deep, grudging praise for the skills of the doctor from The Human Centipede, lots of Krampus talk and then the podcast cuts off before the end because our microphone batteries ran out. Ordinarily that should mean it all goes in the vault, but we thought what the hell put the pod out anyway, because nothing says end of term vibes like this absolute shambles. There’s some good clips though.

| Kerrang December 1988 - Gary Moore, Manowar and The KLF | 11 Dec 2023 | 01:24:50 | |
Following Gary Moore into Battle Welcome to our Christmas Pod (for the second time). It's 1988 and behind the glorious Simon Bisley cover we're looking at a whole bunch of Festive Feechas, once we're done gatekeeping the work of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. Uriah Heep are playing a Christmas festival, there's some surprising news about Marillion and we explore the connection between mystical unicorns and Gary Moore. Most of the Korrespondents in this issue are writing in to defend(er) Manowar, while we find ourselves inexplicably preoccupied by an advert for FIST. Did you ever FIST? Let us know! We get some great quotes- sorry, Kwotes and pics of the year, and recap some of the news stories we've covered in the course of the podcast. In addition we highlight some of our Christmas faves, not to mention some of the great electronic acts of the early 90s like The Shamen, the KLF and Jive Bunny.
(During the recording of this episode, one of the cats jumped up on the keyboard, somehow switched it on and started playing the piano in a sort of free jazz, Keith Tippett style. Unfortunately our microphones completely failed to pick up the audio, but if you wonder why we start asking her if she wants to play any more, that's the reason) PWM24: Kerrang 219 (December 24-31 1988) Recorded 29th November 2023

| Kerrang December 1983 - Crüeniversary, Star Fleet and Krampus | 28 Nov 2023 | 01:46:56 | |
Captain Santa With a Bomb It's Christmas time, so naturally we spend about an hour talking about going to For The Love of Horror, the UK's premier horror convention. If you want to hear us going on and on about The Lost Boys you're in the right place! Otherwise it's business as usual as we delve into a festive edition of Kerrang from 1983. The stars of Metal are asked what they want for Christmas and most of their answers are variations on the same theme. Shout at the Devil era Mötley Crüe are on the cover and give us some extremely on brand quotes, and reveal their inconsistent scoring system. ZZ Top are compared to Status Quo but don't rise to it. We sing the praises of some of Ozzy Osbourne’s lesser known hits (but not the version of Changes he did with Kelly). Brian May of Queen is ready to launch his Star Fleet project and we ponder whether Hot Space was all that bad. We get confused as to when Dragon Attack came out, but the movie had them recording We Will Rock You in the 80s, so get off our dick. Hawkwind's Sonic Attack is recalled, as is Hard Rock Zombies and we consider whether it's even possible to dislike Genesis.

| Metal Hammer Nov 1987 - Iron Maiden, Chris De Burgh and Mr Blobby | 15 Nov 2023 | 01:11:45 | |
Modern Day Emu We're back under the Metal Hammer this week as we take a look at a pre Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Iron Maiden. They're in a reflective mood (doing promo for their video 12 Wasted Years) but that leads us to talk Tiswas, Going Live, Live and Kicking and CD:UK. Along the way we get sidetracked by Stephen King, Mr Blobby, You and Me (Duncan the Dragon vs Cosmo and Dibs), Casper’s Brainy Book and various other nostalgic reminiscences.
We discuss the pros and cons of Live albums and once again Chris De Burgh raises his head. Well it is still Halloween, technically.
Elsewhere we've got Loudness (a Japanese band interviewed by a German journalist, in English, which somehow goes without a hitch), Marillion (in a less than stellar live review, which nevertheless points the way forward for Bruce Dickinson's solo career), The Great Kat (exhorting us to worship her or die) and Paul Di'Anno (talking Frank Sinatra and sexy robots).

| Kerrang October 1987 - Halloween Special with Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and The TSB | 31 Oct 2023 | 01:33:20 | |
Bin Bag Witches In this spooky Halloween Special, we discuss going to The Happiest Place On Earth, ruminate on the difference between Millennials and Generation X and face up to the fact that we're now fully fledged Disney Adults. We ask what makes a great Halloween playlist and whether it should include Monster Mash or not (also we keep alluding to an amazing Monster Mash fact that we never get around to, sorry). We're looking at Kerrang in October '87 and along the way we're hearing from AC/DC, Aerosmith, Savatage, Kreator, Doro, Lizzy Borden, and the Lizzy Borden of his day, Alice Cooper. There's also some rock news, TSB Rock School Competition (again) Klassifieds and an angry letter about Mötley Crüe. DEEP KUTZ this week features - shocker - a new song. It’s the band @Dethonator (who by their own description “Sounds like Rob Halford flying a Spitfire made of Maiden shirts to a Metallica show”), with their track Donnington, which you should all go out and buy now because it’s amazing! We reminisce about The Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood and The Rainforest Cafe in this one, so I guess we must have been hungry when we recorded it. And the feature you’ve all been waiting for we tackle The Filthy Fifteen! PWM21: Kerrang 159 (October 24 1987) Recorded 18th October 2023

| Q Magazine March 1989 - Guns n Roses, Fine Young Cannibals, Planes, Trains and Automobiles | 18 Oct 2023 | 01:33:11 | |
Cosplaying as the 90s This is Can I Pod With Madness so why the hell are we talking about Elvis Costello, The Fine Young Cannibals and Freiheit? Well we've put away childish things (temporarily) and decided to get all sophisticated by looking at an issue of Q Magazine, the *modern* guide to music and more. The original idea was to mix things up a bit and not talk about the same bands all the time, but we do happen to have landed on an issue with a pretty hefty feature on Guns n' Roses, so we're not exactly reinventing the wheel here. Along the way we'll be talking about rock movies, singing actors, Tom Cruise's bad poetry, and the thing that Cliff Richard doesn't wear. Also we've got the first of our DEEP KUTZ (and a rumination on the jam band boom of the early 90s), and, in the run up to Halloween, maybe a spooky story or two PWM20: Q30 (March 1989) Recorded 27th September 2023 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/

| Kerrang Nov 1984 - Prince, Cringe and Sci-Fi Prog Metal | 04 Oct 2023 | 01:25:15 | |
Residual Cringe In another format breaking episode, we're jumping in the Delorean and rolling up into 1984. It's a completely different rock scene, with Heavy Pettin, Raven and Charon, although there's still a Deep Purple feature so we’re not exactly in uncharted territory. Also lots of Meat Loaf!
In a first (and probably last) we've got Prince on the cover, and a whopping great feature on him, which gives us a chance to gush over our favourite pint sized musical genius.
Also in the mag, acts like U2, The Alarm, Neil from The Young Ones and Phil Collins, proving that Kerrang was, at one point at least, a lot more diverse than we might have thought. I’m not sure The Moody Blues sit well here though.
In addition we’ve got the rock news, where we review seeing Busted live, and reveal which of the Can I Pod With Madness team was obsessed with Hanson in their teenage years. We also touch on The Children of Green Knowe, Shakin Stevens, Seven, sci-fi prog metal, American Psycho, swimming pool etiquette, Limahl, Police Academy, the conga, and Chris De Burgh: The Alan Partridge Years. | Kerrang May 1989 - Jefferson Starship, Tori Amos and Soundgarden/Zig & Zag | 20 Sep 2023 | 01:07:01
Better than Deeply Dippy We’re back with the rear end of Kerrang 240. We’ve got Ladykillers! No longer a pervy request for readers to send in saucy pics, it’s now a salute to WOMEN IN ROCK. We look at a few WOMEN IN ROCK (and possibly invent some, “borrowing” a game from The Word Podcast). We talk about Grace Slick (and Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship), and, in number 38 in our continuing series of people we didn’t expect to see in a metal magazine, Tori Amos. Elsewhere we have Onslaught (cue some dubious editorial shenanigans from the Kerrang team), Sabbat with a druid based concept album, which sounds a bit Spinal Tap, and actual Spinal Tap.
Soundgarden are in the gig reviews and we consider the best cover version of Black Hole Sun we’ve ever heard. In our non Kerrang related meanderings we consider Indiana Jones, Right Said Fred’s non I’m Too Sexy ouevre, Whitney Houston and the Narada Michael Walden bass glide, Do The Bartman, The Cable Guy, and The Star Wars Holiday Special.
We also introduce our new feature, Deep Kutz, and let you in on some “exciting” new developments with the podcast PWM18: Kerrang 240 (May 27 1989) Recorded 13th September 2023

| Kerrang Feb 1984 - Tenacious D, Status Quo and Phil Collins gets a Kerrang Kover | 11 Jun 2024 | 01:12:10 | |
Walkin' Cheese What’s Phil Collins’ favourite chocolate? It’s not a gag, we actually want to know. Regardless of the famous tub thumper’s preferred sweet treat, he’s the star of Kerrang’s most bonkers cover ever. We’re looking at a really really OLD magazine this week, so there’s news on Status Quo splitting up shocker - especially shocking since they carried on for about 40 years after this. Also in this ish: Spider with their particular peculiar brand of rock and roll and Rock Goddess, on tour of various shitty hotels around the country. Kommunication features a mysterious Whitesnake anecdote, and a letter from someone who thinks Kerrang should only cover Pink Floyd and The Doors. There’s a lovely story about Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue which doesn’t involve ants, and we discuss the lasting legacy of Risky Business. Also what’s a Wurlitzer (again)? More AMAZING reader mail from our Kontaktz! Our Tenacious D live review! Podcast news! Toys R Us News! What’s your fave 1984 hit? And why is it Jump?

| Kerrang May 1989 - Queen, Def Leppard's social media strategy and a very Poison Christmas | 05 Sep 2023 | 01:41:03 | |
Watermelon on your Doorstep It's a monster length podcast as we go balls deep into K240, and have to come up for air halfway through, yes that's right kids, it's another two parter.
When we're not dredging up half remembered kids' TV themes, we're examining Bret Michaels' contribution to the genre of Christmas music and investigate the unfathomable social media activity of the members of Def Leppard.
Also in this issue: The Grip, Vixen, Last Crack, The Soho Roses, Tin Machine, adverts for Durex and All Clear shampoo, and a SCATHING review of Queen's new album.
We ponder the US (or U.S.) Festival of 1983 and consider a Rashomon style retelling of said event featuring Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen.
In addition there's Steel Panther's Demolicious, Froggy Fresh, a reappraisal of Michael Bolton as a Glam metal act, Tongue Tied (again), Brookside and Hollyoaks' forays into horror, and the enigma that is Valensia.
Finally we recommend a few of our favourite podcasts. Apologies if we missed you out but by this point we were becoming delirious. It's a long one (snarf snarf), so buckle up!

Psychic Sally’s Mystical BiOrb In this unprecedented format shattering episode we are bringing it bang up to date with an edition of Kerrang from 1991! What is the rock scene like in this new decade, in the brave new age of Grunge? Surely Guns N' Roses won't be on the cover again? Well they are, but only in an inset. Otherwise we've got Thunder, Little Angels and Suzie Hatton. Suzie who? We investigate! There's a review of the soundtrack to Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey which we're big fans of, and Deep Purple and Starship have compilations out. So you know, super modern up to the minute stuff! Also Stars in Their Eyes! Bette Midler (again)! Poison! Dread Zeppelin! Paul McKenna! And a massive shout out to Alan "Fluff" Freeman. Also we very nearly have a domestic over the Rock Aid Armenia charity version of Smoke on the Water! Don't worry kids, mum and dad aren't splitting up any time soon.

| Kerrang Oct 1987 - The One With Bad News, Karel Fialka and Malfunkshun | 09 Aug 2023 | 01:08:25 | |
Axl Rose appears on the cover in one of his many disguises, and we're plunged back in time to the heady days of October 1987, when Kerrang deemed it appropriate to feature T'Pau, Then Jericho and Jethro Tull. Finally a Tull feature! We examine how well preserved Ian Anderson is now, in comparison to how wizened he seemed in ‘87, and ponder the finer points of Christmas music. In addition, Kerrang give us the best Mötley Crüe article we've had yet, but what makes it different? The answer may shock you. Also appearing in this issue: Bad News! Faster Pussycat! Joan Jett! Pan’s People! There's also a Marillion feature but we run out of time before we get to it. And lots of stuff about Friends (or do I have to write it as “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” now, like KISS?)

| Top Ten Stadium Rock part 2 - Bon Jovi, Van Halen and R2-D2 | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:49:34 | |
Top Ten Stadium Rock (Channel 4, 19th February, 2000), a retrospective TV programme now so old it needs its own retrospective. In two parts!
We look at Bon Jovi’s foray into the Star Wars universe, and applaud Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach for being the most entertaining interviewee on this programme (although we fail to mention his stint in Gilmore Girls). Van Halen’s yin and yang of Dave and Eddie is examined, with a side order of Ned Flanders. Warning, contains a blisteringly hot take about their biggest hit.
Guns n’ Roses’ streetness and rawness is discussed along with Metallica’s rawness and streetness and we finish off with a discussion of Aerosmith, who are obviously the number one pick, despite some scathing criticism of a particular member of the band. We are (uncle) salty in this episode!
We also cover the distress of buying bad CDs and adventures in file sharing in the early 2000s - all music history is here! Ghost controversy! Tusk! Poison (and Poizon) update! Muppets! Genesis and their Slipperman! Recreating Memento with cut outs from Kerrang and Metal Hammer! And of course, more KISS nonsense. PWM14 Recorded 19th July 2023

| Top Ten Stadium Rock part 1 - KISS, Heart, Poison and the podcast goes off the rails | 12 Jul 2023 | 00:50:18 | |
As promised many moons ago we're finally getting around to Top Ten Stadium Rock (Channel 4, 19th February, 2000), a retrospective TV programme now so old it needs its own retrospective.
So join us for lots of talk about the same bands we always talk about. KISS! Heart! Poison! ZZ Top! Motley Crue! Yes, that’s only five, this is such a big subject we’re splitting it into two episodes.
Also what exactly is “Stadium Rock”? How did they work out the ranking? Has the tone and attitude of late 90s/early 2000s telly aged badly?
In addition to that we have our review of Iron Maiden LIVE, unabashed Lin Shaye fandom, stuff about Threads (and "Threads"), the rise of the machines, even more Sarsippius content, and some exciting PWM news for all listeners

| Metal Hammer Oct 1987 - Doro, Ice Age and Aerosmith’s Flesh Bongos | 28 Jun 2023 | 00:39:41 | |
Female Induced Moshability Doro out of Warlock, but soon to be just Doro adorns the cover of this, the earliest edition of Metal Hammer we own. It's Halloween and there's weird stuff going on in the pages of this issue, though not the kind of weird stuff you might expect.
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is out and about in Germany, with some stories that probably need a content warning because they’re fucking gross, while Rush's Alex Lifeson can't see the point of making music videos.
Some sort of early Guns n Roses backlash seems to be going on, while the idea that Alice Cooper would ever work with a female guitarist is deemed utterly improbable.
In other news we review Steel Panther and Winger LIVE, fail to remember the name of one of Def Leppard's biggest hits, recommend Rob Halford's autobiography, shamelessly petition Audible for a sponsorship deal, and reminisce about meeting the greatest artist in the world of Prog Rock.
Also: Def Leppard! Ice Age! KISS! and all the other bands we always talk about. PWM12 Metal Hammer Vol 2, No 12, (Oct 29, Recorded June 21, 2023

| Iron Maiden Special - Can I Pod With Edness | 30 May 2023 | 00:52:33 | |
Can I Pod With Madness episode 11 Metal Hammer Vol 3, No 17, (August 27, 1988) again - Special Ed
This episode, we take a deep dive into everyone’s favourite zombie cyborg murderer, mental patient and part time Egyptian deity, Eddie, off of the Iron Maiden album covers. Where did he come from? What’s his story? How long does he spend every morning doing his hair? We wonder what other musical mascots are out there - this Metal Hammer article seems to think there’s millions but only manages to suggest one.
We start off with the article but quickly just veer off into watching videos and getting increasingly frustrated with Google image search.
Also, Bowling For Soup, Stargate, potential confusion between Daley Thompson's Decathlon and Hypersports, and more Chris De Burgh talk than is strictly necessary on an Iron Maiden podcast.

| Metal Hammer August 1988 - KISS Disney Adult Rabbit Hole | 17 May 2023 | 00:39:29 | |
Ozzy is appearing at a charity show for Desmond Tutu, which we can find no evidence of, so perhaps this is proof of the Mandela Effect. Status Quo are Running All Over The World, due to a cunningly rerecorded version of their chug rock classic. Joan Jett’s in a movie with Michael J Fox. We fondly recall trying to play Slayer tunes on Guitar Hero.
Def Leppard are ruthlessly mocked for not getting their follow up to Hysteria done in good time. More KISS pedantry ahoy in the letters page, which is exactly the kind of thing we can get onboard with, unlike certain selections from Gene Simmons’ solo output.
Judas Priest are on the road, ramming it down, and purveying... let me check... oh yeah, heavy metal. We workshop some unsolicited alternative names for Priest songs and end up just watching the video for Hot Rockin’.
Also Cinderella! Living Colour! Beetlejuice! Napalm Death! Craig Charles! And much much more.
Inhuman Maelstrom of Angst! The New Age of Barbarism! Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria in Can I Pod With Madness episode 10.

| Kerrang September 1987 - The Cult, Bad News and W.A.S.P vs The P.M.R.C. | 03 May 2023 | 01:11:59 | |
Another frickin W.A.S.P. cover but this one’s a good one. Top of the Pops have been PRESSURED into featuring some of our favourite bands, but we still have to put up with Stock Aitken and Waterman. Vixen are about to release a ROCKER, and we talk about The Grateful Dead despite not knowing anything about them. We consider the Ghoulies/Boglins universe. Bullying in The Cult! Tesla invented MTV Unplugged! Pink Floyd are back! Wogan is ruining a Bad News performance, and Bon Jovi are wowing Donnington by getting Paul Stanley, Dee Snider and Bruce Dickinson on stage with them.
Unable to avoid nerd shiz, we also delve into Batman, Slaine The Horned God, The Light and Darkness War, Captain Eo, Alchemy Metalwear from Rieder Design, Star Tours and George Lucas’ dating history.
Also we review Porkies and Jaws IV: The Revenge and ask has Blackie Lawless even seen Gremlins?

| Q Magazine July 1992 - Prince vs Kate Bush, and U2 vs Batman | 28 May 2024 | 00:53:26 | |
We don’t know what we’re doing, it must be art It's Q, so by law there has to be a feature about U2, but it's U2 in their postmodern, post-earnest, post black and white phase. We discuss the best song they ever did- see if you can guess which it is, considering we also talk about Batman Forever on this one. Also featured is Prince so we investigate further his collaboration with Kate Bush and discover something that presumably everyone else knew since The Red Shoes came out. Also fun fact, we reveal which of Prince’s entourage appeared in Buffy and how much we spent on a VHS box set of Season 5. Faith No More, W.A.S.P, Napalm Death and Marillion all get reviews, so we're still keeping one foot in the hard rock universe. We remember Peachfuzz the friendly wolf and The Breakfast Club. | Metal Hammer January 1988 - Ozzy 'n' Zakk, Hear 'n' Aid, Tish ‘n’ Tuts | 19 Apr 2023 | 00:59:39
Ozzy’s on the cover with a cheeky little scamp called Zakk Wylde. Whitesnake have renamed ZZ Top’s Tush, and AC/DC are busy blowing up your video. Did James Cameron of James Cameron’s Avatar fame rip off the cover of Steeler’s Undercover Animal album? We investigate.
We also (vaguely) remember Not Fade Away, Raw Power and Noisy Mothers (not Muthas)!
Dio’s Hear n’ Aid charity project is reappraised, and so are Cornish pasties. We discuss another entry in the Mötley Crüe Cinematic Universe (The Crüeniverse) Hot Tub Time Machine, which stars... holy shit! Sebastian Stan! We ponder the slow death of HMV, and wonder who’s got Jim Dandy’s washboard.
Also Poison! David Lee Roth! KISS! Mammoth! Queen! And many more. PWM8: Metal Hammer Vol 3, No 2, (January 28, 1988): Tish ‘n’ Tuts

| The Dirt Commentary - Mötley Fucking Crüecast | 11 Apr 2023 | 01:13:33 | |
It’s a very special episode of CIPWM as we go into the Mötley Crüe Cinematic Universe (The Crüeniverse) - we’re looking at The Dirt (Jeff Tremaine, 2019) - Netflix’s adaptation of the Crüe’s genital warts and all autobiography from 2001. Matthew Trippe doesn’t appear in this movie, nor does Pamela Anderson, or the drummer from Hole. We compare and contrast with Pam & Tommy, and ponder what other rock biogs should hit the big (or big-ish) screen. Can we reunite the Crüe with our loving tribute? Maybe (but we don't mention any of that shit because we recorded this about a month ago)

There’s money off Wolfsbane down at Little Kathy Wilson’s place! Lisa Dominique looms large over this issue, but doesn’t get the cover, the K! Team decided to go with the bloke from Testament.
It’s summer 89, which means Batman, Bette (Midler) and Busters (Ghost). We’re talking Simple Minds, Sonia and Gloria Estafan and trying to work out who was on The 8.15 from Manchester. We reminisce about meeting the great and good, such as Elijah Wood, Judge Reinhold, Tony Hart and Wayne Sleep. Not metal, but all part of life’s rich tapestry.
Meanwhile a 9 year old is shredding on the guitar - and for some reason David Lee Roth finds it a threat!

| Kerrang Oct 1988 - Def Leppard, Infectious Grooves and the Leeds Festival 2002 Story | 22 Mar 2023 | 01:14:44 | |
Def, just admit it Returning to a week we previously covered in PWM03, today we’re looking at Kerrang 208 (Oct 8, 1988). Lovable Sheffield scamps Def Leppard are legit the biggest band in the world although you wouldn’t know it from those FASCISTS at Radio 1. Kerrang! Has a new feature - This Week in Metal which is suspiciously similar to Can I Pod With Madness.
Does Kerrang talk about Iron Maiden too much? (Spoilers: yes, according to this guy). We reminisce about escaping from The Leeds Festival in 2002, after waiting three hours to see Guns n Roses (or at least, The Axl and Buckethead Show). We ponder the solo works of KISS, and realise that it doesn’t seem right that Jane’s Addiction appear in the same magazine as Gypsy Queen and Great White. Also we cover Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves - please note that this is now a Sarsippius fan podcast.

For The Love of Hot Leg In episode 4 we lurch forward in time to look at Metal Hammer Vol 5, No 6, (April 3, 1989). Has Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P had a makeover? His background certainly has. Also Vixen! Sabbath! Rush! Tigertailz and some UK Glamsters. Marillion finally have a new singer but we’re not allowed to see him. Mötley Crüe are cleaned up (apparently) and Vince Neil is hanging out with Hurricane, while Poison hang out with some naked women. We ask: is the world of late 80s metal sexist (spoiler: yes). Also in this episode, we sing the praises of Extreme, Steel Panther, Hot Leg and For The Love of Horror, none of which appear in this issue PWM04: Metal Hammer Vol 5, No 6, (April 3, 1989) https://podwithmadness.podbean.com/

In the inaugural edition of our podcast, we discuss what to call the podcast. Then we move onto the main topic, Kerrang issue 178, (March 12, 1988). We cover Iron Maiden (about to release a new single, and promoting it with boobs), Whitesnake (just being sexy), Motley Crue (Nikki Sixx doppelganger shocker,) and W.A.S.P. (dog related shenanigans). There's Kommunication about Sabbat, and their extreme HEAVINESS, Tigertailz (Wales' finest) and some complaints about The Pet Shop Boys Also Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, and Leather & Lace, all of which are METAL. Also at some point I very nearly accuse Greta Thunberg of ripping off Led Zep. Podwithmadness@gmail.com
| Q Magazine July 1992 - ABBA, Mel B and Don't Tell Mum The Babysitter's Dead | 14 May 2024 | 01:01:09 | |
All Right Let’s Just Go For It Once again we’re taking a break from the parallel universe of 80s metal, and delving into Q, The Modern Guide To Music and More, from 1992, so we’re on the back foot straight away as everything is spelled correctly. There’s news about Prince and Craig McLachlan, and ABBA are back, back, back etc. This leads us to talk about the brilliance of Erasure, and tribute bands. Along the way we’re talking Mel B / G / Scary Spice, a surprising revelation about Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, and the continuing subplot of a Billy Wirth obsession. We also shout out our friends over at the Dystopian Dance Party podcast @Dystopiangram who are basically a better version of us. Is Metallica’s Kirk Hammett an Inspector Gadget fan? Why aren’t Americans charmed by a Gloucestershire accent? What’s the definitive version of Rocket Man? All this and much much more in PWM33.

| Kerrang Kontaktz 1988 - Whitesnake Sell Out, Priest/Saxon/Heep review and Aerosmith Faves | 16 Apr 2024 | 00:52:38 | |
Garfield is an Obligate Carnivore This week we’re looking at Kerrang Kontaktz, the Magazine Written By Rock Fans - or alternatively, a lazy money for old rope exercise in which some long rambling letters get published in full. Some “Kontroversial Komments” on the matters of are Whitesnake big fat sellouts, is Robert Plant trying to distance himself from his Led Zeppelin past, and are Glam Rock Pretty Boys giving rock a bad name? Also there’s a shit ton of Pen Palz, which is always good for some inexplicable and baffling comments that possibly didn’t even make sense at the time let alone 36 years later.
We also report back on everything we’ve been up to during our hiatus (mostly listing Aerosmith faves and being in the presence of metal royalty Judas Priest, Saxon and Uriah Heep)
Also includes a plea for sponsorship with Iron Maiden and Monty Bojangles

| Kerrang September 1989 - Marillion, Lenny Kravitz and Shilling for Disney | 27 Feb 2024 | 01:18:28 | |
If We Ever Get To The Bottom of it. This week we’re taking a look at Lenny Kravitz, and asking is he too sexy to be into Star Wars? Talking of NSFW content, we remember a classic Steve Guttenburg video, and assess the career of Judge Reinhold. Kerrang’s cover star is Marillion new boy Steve Hogarth, in a leaf related photoshoot. We ask is their latest single ideal to be used in an 80s douchebag comedy movie, and whether they should have worked with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Alice Cooper’s on tour and America is cracking down on rudeness. Danish rockers Disneyland After Dark lead us to speculate about what that would actually be like, because we are apparently Disney adults. Also if the mysterious Club 33 want to give a couple of influential podcasters a membership, we’ll totally be up for that and be absolute shills and/or keep it quiet, just give us a shout. Charity football matches, charity singles and charity gigs are all going on, and we struggle to remember The Poll Tax, the hole in the ozone layer and other things that made the 80s terrible. The Monster Mash is BACK, as is me complaining about the lyrics. We ask whether musicians in the 80s worked out and give a shout out to the little known Austrian bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. All this and Font Talk is back!

How do you feel about panthers? Vixen are our cover stars in this issue, so the casual sexism starts early! WASP are celebrating their lead guitarist (who - spoiler alert, bails out of the band in 6 months time) and cranking out a Jethro Tull cover. There’s reports of secret Aerosmith gigs, so we may rebrand as a mystery podcast. We’ve got features on Quireboys (mostly drunk) and Gary Moore (mostly angry about Kingdom Come). Motley Crue are up to their usual antics and we look at some great listings for Shrapnel, Penpalz and Klassifieds. News about Scott Ian gives us an excuse to use our Anthrax artwork! Residual anger over people talking at KISS concerts! Talking of KISS, Paul Stanley is (affectionately) mocked. Plus ASMR!

| Kerrang Free Pod - Feeder and our Eurovision Faves | 30 Jan 2024 | 00:31:52 | |
In a change from the intended episode we don't even get to Kerrang in this one, but we do talk about Steve Wozniak, reminisce about Feeder's Just a Day, discover Feeder's Just a Day 2, remember the first lockdown and spin off into a conversation about Eurovision and our favourite entry ever from 2006, Lithuania's LT United with We Are The Winners. Also DEEP KUTZ brings us 1987 by Diamante, and we ask whether she's inspired by Stranger Things and/or Dazzler.
Also the return of the moon controversy. Maybe think of this as a bonus episode?

| Ghost (BC) arguments, Disney Report and cyberstalking Chris De Burgh | 20 Nov 2024 | 00:54:24 | |
It's a Blow Up The Outside World After All We're just gonna carry on as if there's not been a massive gap in our scheduling, and everything's completely normal, right? Denim and Leather are BACK! Our unexpected hiatus means we have a LOT to catch up on, which means no Kerrang this week- if you regularly tune in for info on all your Classic 80s metal faves you might want to skip this one (but also, what the fuck, are you OK?). In the meantime it's our usual bullshit: Chris De Burgh is cyberstalked, we meet Instagram royalty and complain about how hot Florida is. More arguments about Ghost! Tetchy cinema interactions. Cancellations aplenty. Can we possibly afford a pair of hazmat suits? Also this is now a Golden Girls fan Pod. You OWE YOURSELF the chance to enjoy Can I Pod With Madness!

| Kerrang July 1989 - Faith No More, Soundgarden and Forgotten NWOBHMs | 04 Dec 2024 | 00:55:58 | |
Faith No More's Big Jim Martin appears as the Kerrang cover star this week, so we're back in AD 1989. There's a NWOBHM special, because of course there is, and we examine a few forgotten heroes of that bygone age. Or to be more specific, we look at a couple of goofy old promo photos. We check in with our old pals Ice Age who are ROCKING Wisbech Market Square, and The Who's Pete Townshend who's about to unleash his version of The Iron Man. Slash is dictating a letter to the press, we look at some SINGLEZ (Beastie Boys! Nuclear Assault! Soundgarden!), and once again consider King Diamond's face!
Sexy cartoons! American state mispronunciation. Even more Bea Arthur! Also the Milli Vanilli/Faith No More collision you never knew happened!

| Kerrang December 1987 - Cliff, Shaky and Ozzy's Winter Wonderland | 18 Dec 2024 | 01:20:26 | |
Saviours Day Is I-cumen In
What's a jalopy? What's that awful wailing? Ozzy Osbourne doing Winter Wonderland, that's what, so it must be our fun, festive Christmas episode. Cliff's least loved Christmas hit is examined and we struggle to follow the plot of a video for a smooth 80s jam. Also, remember Lemmings? Man that was a good game. In the world of Kerrang, we look at the Christmas 1987 edition, which features a ton of stuff we've already talked about on previous episodes. And there's an end of term game which very nearly goes all right. The long awaited return of fan favourite features TV KRYMEZ and Have You Seen The Chart leads us to explore the parallel universes of Shaky and Dennis Waterman. Plus all the usual tangents and bullshit. You know the drill by now!

| Kerrang February 1994 - Nine Inch Nails, GWAR and bad band names | 19 Feb 2025 | 00:40:30 | |
Swingin’ on the flippity flop! It's the mid 90s, and we're donning our best flannel, kickin’ it with Ren and Stimpy and checking out Kerrang! To the extreme! Join us as we try to remember the name of our current favourite song! Confusing Steven Tyler for Jarvis Cocker! The Encarta / Cinemania / Music Central triptych of mid-90s CD-ROM excellence! Rediscovering 90s Britpop second divisioners Cast and accusing them of Guns n’ Roses plagiarism! Punky Fish remembered! Other stuff! We investigate what makes a good band name, and how there aren’t any. Aerosmith! The Cult! Gwar! Nine Inch Nails! Redd Kross! And the return of Mother Tongue! All this and a non anecdote about almost going to the inaugural Phoenix Festival. Make sure you listen to find out how that one turned out!

| Kerrang February 1994 - Sepultura, New Crüe, and rating the Grunge Superhunks | 12 Mar 2025 | 01:02:01 | |
We're back with another deep dive into K482. We have a look at that televisual classic The Word (which has locked 50 Sepultura fans in a metal cage for no discernable reason). There's singlez (from Soundgarden, Primal Scream, Smashing Pumpkins and Corduroy), and posters (celebrating the Big Hitters of grunge. And Tad). The Wildhearts’ health and safety precautions are questioned and we look at a very dubious piece of cover art by a band called... sigh... Genital Deformities. The main feature is a look at the new “improved” 90s version of Mötley Crüe, which finds our heroes without Vince Neil, but apparently unable to talk about anything else. Similarly free of their best known front man, Marillion are 6 years Fishless, but still doing concept albums. And a film -gulp! Also: Korrespondents, Klassifieds, and a teaser for the next episode. You've never had it so good!

| RAW Magazine October 1988 - Dating the 80s rock superhunks | 26 Mar 2025 | 00:44:50 | |
A Very Feminine Heterosexual As promised, here's a look at the Johnny come lately rock mag of the 80s and early 90s, RAW - Rock Action Worldwide (it says here). American comedian Sam Kinison has a single out and is roping in his rockin’ pals to help out. But who’s the most dateable metal hunk in the video? And is Kinison a threat to The Goonies? There's some news about a new band who are destined for greatness, and an unfortunate incident with seafood. Possibly. Also Manowar say goodbye to Ross “The Boss” Friedman and hello to Dave “The Death Dealer” Shankle. This is why I was never a metal god, I never had a nickname. What have Anvil got in common with The Spice Girls? The answer may shock you. Also! A DEEP KUTZ that is both smooth and angry! Superman history! Important information about Piranhas! Dry vs wet!

| RAW Magazine October 1988 - Ozzy, Bon Jovi and KISS put the S in Shit | 09 Apr 2025 | 00:58:51 | |
We're back with another delve into RAW. The hefty Bon Jovi pullout is examined, but not as much as the video to Bad Medicine. One of KISS’ least loved hits is reappraised, and we draw a link between Ozzy Osbourne and Tim Allen. A misconception about Alice Cooper's biggest hit just leads us into further confusion. Meanwhile there's an article about Mr Big that doesn't tell us that much but we can all agree the harmonies are good. We finally learn Ozzy’s favourite film (some recency bias), but before we can read the rest of the mag, we go off on a few tangents about Sandworms, Star Wars and the early work of M Night Shyamalan. Yes, this is now a whopping three parter! Also we talk about cats. Like, a lot. Finally we've got our first GIVEAWAY which is *very* exciting so make sure you listen till the end (or skip through the ep to get to that bit)

| RAW Magazine October 1988 - Britrockin' with Little Angels, Zodiac Mindwarp and Philthy Animal Taylor | 28 Apr 2025 | 00:42:11 | |
Veering wildly away from our edict of “keep it light” we're discussing the best way to dispose of a corpse. I guess that makes us slightly more metal. Otherwise we're finishing off our extremely deep dive into RAW issue 4. Motörhead's Phithy Animal Taylor gets a drum centric feature and the finer points of drum solos and electronic percussion are discussed. Zodiac Mindwarp is back, wishing he was royalty and Scarborough's finest, The Little Angels are playing a gig at a school. In Scarborough. Along the way we talk hair dye, Buffy and our own personal Banter Box. Special shout out to RJ and the Painful Memories- by the time you listen to this it's probably too late to vote for them in Kerrang Radio's The Deal competition, but give them a listen anyway because they rock.

| Q Magazine May 1989 - Peter Gabriel, Buffy and a salute to Cybergoths | 28 May 2025 | 00:48:10 | |
I want to feel disgusted! Once again we’re reliving our glory years of watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer and going to Cybergoth Nights. The Cure’s Robert Smith is being lowered into a furry, sticky orifice but not mentioning any potential Freudian implications. He's right about Morrissey, mind. We dig into a lengthy Peter Gabriel article, which is mostly about WOMAD and Real World Studios, so of course we talk a lot about Alan Partridge, the Genesis Reunion concert and whether Gabes consults his mum and dad when making his videos. Katy Perry’s Twitch Channel! Gravity boots! Michael Keaton love! Also exercise tips! Please note this is now a lifestyle podcast.

| Q Magazine May 1989 - Blackadder, Red Dwarf and maybe some music stuff | 14 May 2025 | 00:48:11 | |
Extra special 46th episode spectacular! Due to a tech fail cock up of massive proportions, this week we're looking at Q - The *Modern* Guide to Music and More - from May ‘89. Sting is on the cover, because of course he fucking is. We examine the intellectual rock hunk's activism, how difficult it is being really really good looking, and his half hearted feud with Rod Stewart. We're also talking Fun House, like, a proper Fun House Deep Dive. I swear there's been more mentions of Pat Sharp on this podcast than The Big Four. We dredge up our Blackadder and Red Dwarf memories. Musical genres are nailed down to locations in the UK. Also stuff about KISS. As usual. Rainforests! Environmental info! Dietary advice! Fucking hell, we've gone woke! Also essential interior decoration tips. Don't say we never do nothing for ya.

| Kerrang July 1998 - It's The Nineties | 11 Jun 2025 | 00:54:28 | |
Gettin' it straight in '98 y'all! We're just back from a Star Wars "convention", and tearing ourselves away from playing (Kessel) Sabacc long enough to record a podcast, we're tackling a Kerrang from the modern era (27 years ago). The deeply ungoogleable pop punk band A are recalled, as is the unloved meteor based sci fi blockbuster Armageddon. We examine how Disney *really* banked on the popularity of that movie well past its use by date, and also the curious marketing decision of forcing people who want to go to Honey I Shrunk The Audience to watch a seemingly endless advert for Kodak. The Prodigy and The Beastie Boys are all over this issue, and Dream Theater predictably get a right kicking in the live reviews. The Presidents of the USA are no more (for the moment, at least). One of us saw them live. The other was clearly too busy watching Julia Valet on Superock. David Lee Roth might be ignoring the 90s but we sure as hell aren't!

| Kerrang September 1983 | Deep Sabbath, Meat Loaf and Venom Ain’t Got No Knobs | 19 Aug 2025 | 00:48:27 | |
Caught Up In The Rapture of Me! We’re jumping forward two years to find Kerrang well and truly established, hitting its 50th issue and smushing a cake onto Ian Gillan’s head. The celebrated Child In Time screamer currently finds himself NOT in the ranks of the mighty Purps, but somehow inexplicably in the doom laden court of another seminal 70s metal combo. Who could that be? Stonehenge based shenanigans aside, we have a feature on Venom, who are NOT HAPPY. Also disgruntled are Fastway, and most of the Korrespondents on the letters page. Crikey! Nazareth's Dan McCafferty appears in a photo I will never post on Instagram, and I regret to note that we're definitely losing the Quo fans with this episode. Luckily Ozzy shows up on the back cover and all is well again. We've got some DEEP KUTZ, an argument about DEEP KUTZ, and a Kompetition Update!
