Penn State football put plenty of questions to bed on Saturday afternoon with a dominant performance against West Virginia in Morgantown. Despite a rain delay, the team rolled the Mountaineers with a dominant performance on defense, on the ground, and through the air.

Penn State doesn't let rain delay dampen fireworks

The Penn State offense came out on fire in the second half of it's win over West Virginia. We'll discuss how running back Nick Singleton ripped off two runs of 40 yard runs and how the offense found it's mojo after a 2023 season that felt like a grind offensively. On the day, the team gained 149 yards on explosive runs over eight carries of ten or more yards. 

Next, we'll highlight Drew Allar's play on the day and, how he changed his mentality after an offseason of work and how the Nittany Lions found a rhythm in the passing game. Again, big plays were the name of the game. Allar tossed six passes for 178 yards including a 50-yard touchdown strike to Trey Wallace that led to the team's first big touchdown of the game. 

Trouble spots to clean up?

However, it wasn't all rosy for the Penn State offense. Beau Pribula's presence in the run game struggled to make the impact that the team hoped for. He finished the game with three carries for 25 yards, mixed with an "almost" fumble early in the game. However, his presence paid off in the end as he tossed the game-sealing touchdown in the red zone from 19 yards out to Tyler Warren. 

Penn State defense dominates

Next, we'll discuss the defense's play and how they stopped the West Virginia attack in the second half and put quarterback Garrett Greene into a no-win situation. Linebacker Tony Rojas made plays in the first half, but he settled down in the second and became a dangerous weapon for the Penn State defense. We highlight his accomplishments and what they mean for the team. 

The Penn State safeties were lights out in the first half, but the team gave up some chunk plays in the second, which led to a West Virginia touchdown. Yet overall, the secondary had an excellent day. We discuss their performance. 

The Penn State Football team dominated West Virginia 34-12 on Saturday in Morgantown. The trio of Sean Fitz, Greg Pickel, and Nate Bauer give their thoughts about the team's performance against West Virginia. The Lions dominated with big plays and suffocating defense and came out of a nearly 2.5-hour rain delay on fire. Our experts discuss the emergence of wide receiver Trey Wallace, Drew Allar's exceptional day, and more.

Fitz's recruiting update

Penn State got a surprise commitment after a week of surprise commitments this past weekend. Pennsylvania native and 2027 running back Kemon Spell committed to the program on Sunday, nearly three full years before his college enrollment date. Fitz will discuss the meaning of such an early commitment and what it says about Spell.

He'll also discuss some of the rule changes in college football and how they are affecting the team's recruiting strategies for the Class of 2025 and beyond.

Penn State press conferences: Between the lines

There were thousands of questions and answers during Penn State Media Day, and our experts highligh the most interesting for today's show. Penn State football is gearing up for another spring football season with winter conditioning. But outside the walls of Lasch, the Big Ten is changing around them. Two major names joined Ohio State and Michigan recently, and today, on the BWI Live Show, we're talking about those additions. Chip Kelly left UCLA late into the offseason to be the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, while NFL defensive coordinator Wink Martindale left the pros to join Michigan.

Penn State offensive tackle succession discussion

Former Penn State left tackle Donovan Smith won his second Super Bowl on Sunday with the Kansas City Chiefs. He's had a long career as a starting left tackle in the NFL, but not every Nittany Lions fan celebrates him like they do other successful players from the program. We discuss the lineage of left tackles under head coach James Franklin and how his time in Happy Valley colors the way fans feel about him.

That conversation then spins to include Rasheed Walker, who had a similar story arc at Penn State before leaving for the NFL. Both players were ultra-talented but never fully realized their potential before leaving for the pros. Now, Walker is the presumed starting left tackle for the Green Bay Packers.

As always, when a quarterback doesn’t have immediate and resounding success, fan bases tend to fracture around the topic. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was good last season but didn’t play his best in big games, nor did he play with a consistently improving arc throughout the season. Yet, there was good in his play when you sift through his performance, and that’s what we’re talking about today on the BWI Live Show. Where did Allar shine in 2023, and what does that say about his ability to play better this upcoming season?

Allar one of the best at a hard skill

On today’s show, we discuss a strong point in Allar’s play that isn’t obvious to fans during a game. We break down how well Allar played when getting to his second read on a play. We’ll explain what that means and why it’s an important factor in predicting his success as he grows in the position. Here’s part of that answer from the article detailing Allar’s strengths.

Every play, regardless of concept, scheme, or coaching philosophy, has a starting point. There’s a route or route combination that the quarterback should look to first. But what happens when that part of the play won’t work? Most passing plays have more than one concept baked into them, and the quarterback can either go to that or make a play with his feet.

Today, we’ll focus on Alllar’s ability to play within the scheme when his first read isn’t there. This is a facet of his game that we highlighted repeatedly during our film review of the offense in 2023 and is a primary reason why I believe Allar can still be a transcendent quarterback despite the lack of immediate returns to that end.

Last Friday, the college football landscape felt the first tremors of the next big shift in how the sport will be run in the future. The SEC and the Big Ten announced they were creating a special advisory committee to help oversee the future of the sport. Many viewed this as the beginning of the end for the NCAA. Penn State football finds itself on the ship headed toward the future.

The future of College football

We spend the first third of today's show discussing how college football has been masquerading as something different than the NFL, its professional counterpart. Bauer lists why he thinks the changes that will take place in the sport over the next several years will finally unmask the sport for what it has been for years.

Where does Penn State fit into this? Will the Big Ten change its model of team acquisition and start shedding less viable programs? According to Bauer, it's all on the table.

Penn State defensive end room

Another significant change for Penn State this upcoming year is at defensive end. While Dani Dennis-Sutton will likely step into the starring role after two seasons building to this moment, the other position remains unclaimed. Defensive ends Amin Vanover and Zuriah Fisher are the veterans who have the inside track to the spot, but who else factors in? Will Abdul Carter see a meaningful change in his usage? Or Will sophomore Jameial Lyons fall in Dennis-Suttons' footsteps. We discuss those ideas and the other variables that will present themselves in spring football.

Penn State gets a five star player in final rankings

For the second time in three seasons, one of Penn State’s offensive line commits has earned a fifth star in the final recruiting rankings. Erie native Cooper Cousins skyrocketed up the rankings this fall after a dominant performance during the All-Star season. Recruiting Insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will discuss where Penn State’s top targets landed in the On300. Here’s what On3 national scout Cody Bellaire said about Cousins.

“Cooper Cousins’ tape is filled with pancakes and tossing defenders out of the club,” On3 National Scout Cody Bellaire wrote following his All-American week. “With that said, we knew he would be physical and feisty, but we didn’t know just how violent he would truly be when facing some of the top competition in the country. Throughout the week, Cousins was powerful at the point of attack. He finished blocks in the run game and was battling through the whistle during one-on-one’s. His movement skills were on full display during 9-on-7 and team periods.

We also discuss Jon Mitchell’s ascent back to the top 100 in the final On3 Rankings and where the rest of Penn State’s nine prospects landed on that list.

Penn State Junior Day Preview

Penn State hosts its final Junior Day before the dead period closes down recruiting for the month of February. We’ll discuss which regional prospects coming to Camppus this weekend are most important or interesting.

The player that stands out most is quarterback Matt Zollers. Snyder explains that while most junior day visits aren’t as critical, the quarterback differs. He also delves into why Zollers, in particular, is a critical visit this weekend.

We’ll also discuss regional receiver Jeff Exinor out of McDonogh and his fit with the program. Snyder gives a stat about receiver recruiting that is eye-opening. Lastly, we preview the 2026 class with Harrisburg offensive lineman Kevin Brown.

Penn State Junior Day Recap

Penn State held its second Junior Day of the 2025 recruiting cycle this past weekend and Blue White Illustrated has you covered in the hours after it’s conclusion. Fitz and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder have reactions on the site, but Fitz gives an overview of the weekend. Was this another opportunity to pick up a commitment like they did the previous weekend? He discussed the expectations he had for this weekend.

Next, the team chooses another position to discuss as the Nittany Lions transition to 2024 and spring football. Bauer wrote a position overview earlier this week and the team discusses how that spot can take a step in 2024 and if Kevin Winston Jr can become a superstar.

Here’s what Winston had to say about his progress this past season.

That was my main thing. Getting better and better each game as the season goes on,” Winston said. “That was my main thing and my goal. That’s what I was looking forward to.”

Penn State recruiting news

The Penn State staff is expanding its board for 2025 and 2026, with more offers coming out each week. Today's show discusses recent public offers, including an NFL legacy linebacker and some top tight ends from down South.

We'll also discuss the latest decisions from top prospects this week. Top defensive tackle prospect Trent Wilson released a top eight schools. We'll discuss that and where defensive end Ari Watford committed.

Rankings for the Class of 2024 are still filtering in as we near the traditional signing day in February. We'll discuss where Penn State's prospects moved in the On300 National rankings, which take into account the updated 247 Sports lists.

Junior Day Preview

The biggest news of the week is that Penn State has another massive recruiting weekend with over 30 players expected to visit campus to learn more about Penn State. We'll discuss some of the players that Snyder listed in his recent article about the remaining junior days.

Penn State hosted just shy of 50 prospects this past Saturday, Jan. 20, for its first of three junior days before the dead period begins on Feb. 5. The second of those recruiting events is now set for this upcoming Saturday, Jan. 27. James Franklin and his staff will follow that up with one more the following weekend, Feb. 3.

Over the past few weeks, Blue White Illustrated has confirmed more than 50 prospects that plan to attend one of those two remaining dates.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are a developmental team that won't solve their problems through the transfer portal. That's what head coach James Franklin said in the lead up to the Peach Bowl. Yes, the team does try to find select players to fill specific needs, but the team still believes in internal development.

So on today's BWI Live Show, we're discussing which players that didn't have big roles last year, need to take that step. We're also breaking down a unique opportunity for the team's defensive players. A certain position hasn't been open for three years, but thanks to graduation, is finally open. We'll discuss how good Curtis Jacobs and Daequan Hardy were in covering the slot for Penn State.

Penn State slot coverage is an opportunity for a new batch of players

For the past three seasons Jacobs and Hardy have split the duties as the primary slot defenders in Penn State's defense. On today's show we're talking about the article featuring these two from last week. Here's an excerpt.

While Jacbos’ contributions as a coverage linebacker in the flat are harder to quantify, Hardy’s contributions are clear. No Big Ten cornerback had more third-down coverage snaps than Hardy over the last three seasons. Despite a rough start to the 2022 season, Hardy allowed a passer rating of just 50.9 into his coverage since 2021. No player with more than ten targets can boast such a low rating allowed, and no player saw more third-down targets than Hardy.

We'll explain how the team can replace these two and how Tom Allen's defense could potentially cause some changes to the type of player filling this role.

Owen Aliciene breakdown

The Penn State Class of 2025 prospect joined the Nittany Lions after the team's first junior day of the new year. We'll discuss his talents and where he fits in the recent run of tall tackle prospects for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein.

Which Penn State players need to develop?

The team is deep into the offseason conditioning program, building themselves into the team they will be for 2024. But which players are critical for the team to see grow? There are some clear holes on the roster for a young player to fill in 2024 and some positions need competition to create overall growth for the team. We'll highlight the players that weren't starters in 2023 who need to be contributors next year, such as Tony Rojas, Omari Evans and Zion Tracy.

Dani Dennis-Sutton discusses path towards elite play

Check out Bauer’s complete article, detailing what he learned from Dennis-Sutton during the runup to the Peach Bowl. Here’s an excerpt from their conversation.

“I learned that you’ve got to be consistent,” said Dennis-Sutton last month. “Chop is consistent at beating his man. You don’t see many times if at all in a game where Chop is losing any of his reps. He’s winning consistently and that’s why he’s going to be a first-round draft pick.”

The Penn State Nittany Lions haven’t closed the books on the transfer portal for 2024, but the first chapter is done. Today, we’re reviewing the staff’s work through the winter portal period and giving out grades for their effort. Penn State Winter Portal Class

As we saw last year with Penn State’s winter portal additions last year, it doesn’t guarantee that a player will be a successful addition, but it does give them the chance to be one. Having players on campus for spring football allows the team to integrate pieces into the offense and defense more seamlessly for the upcoming year. It also allows the staff to better understand the competition in each room. That’s a significant reason why we’re singling out this portal window.

The biggest needs on the team are on the offensive side, with tackle and receiver lacking veteran presence at these two key positions.

The red letter, exclamation point, need for the Penn State football team has been evident since about the midway point of the 2023 season. The team needs an infusion of veteran dependability outside. While a dominant lead dog would be great, you don’t expect that out of the portal unless you’re willing to play with the big dogs in college football.

Since writing this, veteran receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith has made it clear he intends to be part of the team for the 2024 season. We’ll assess how the team’s retention and acquisition could play out this year.

Offensive tackle departures create massive hole on roster

The team lost significant experience and skill with Olu Fashanu and Caedan Wallace departing for the NFL. The team has been grooming Drew Shelton for this moment, but the rest of the roster is still very young. Enter redshirt sophomore tackle Nolan Rucci from Wisconsin. Can he fill the void?

Defensive line additions through retention

Like the receiver, the team held on to its veteran depth with Hakeem Beamon, Coziah Izzard, and Dvon Ellies all returning for the 2024 season. We'll address the impact of that move on the team's ability to maintain a defensive personality trait.

Penn State needs cornerback bodies

Not only did the team need to add veteran experience to the room, they needed to add bodies. Just six players were listed as cornerbacks on the initial 2024 spring roster before the addition of A.J. Harris and Jalen Kimber. We'll discuss what each player brings to the team for this upcoming season.

The Penn State football team filled another vacancy on the coaching roster this week after a quick turnaround in the coaching search. The team reportedly hired Vanderbilt special teams coach Justin Lustig after current coordinator Stacy Collins departed back to Boise State. We’ll discuss that move and more on today’s BWI Live Football Show.

Penn State January news and notes

Blue White Illustrated senior editor Nate Bauer wrote about Penn State’s decision to hire Lustig late Sunday night.

The move provides a quick resolution to the program’s vacancy at special teams coordinator. And with it, the Nittany Lions have another strong resume handling the oft-prioritized element of the game.

A Broyles Award nominee at Syracuse in 2018, the annual recognition of the nation’s top assistant coach, Lustig has helped guide the Commodores since his arrival in Nashville in 2021. Following his debut season, he was promoted to assistant head coach.

We’ll discuss Collins’ move to head back to the West Coast and how fans should feel about the team replacing three coordinators in one offseason. Can Penn State maintain forward momentum while having so many changes?

NFL Draft deadline

Another key date for the program has come and gone. The deadline to declare for the 2024 NFL draft has passed, so any remaining players with draft eligibility are now locked in for the 2024 college football season. The biggest news of the offseason rocked the college football landscape last night when ESPN reproted that Alabama head coach Nick Saban was retiring. The legendary head coach leaving one of the most storied programs in college football leaves a vacancy and a power vacuum that will change the landscape of college football in a signficiant way. How will it affect Penn State? We're discussing that on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show.

Penn State braces for impact of Saban's retirement

From a recruiting perspective, Saban's retirement can create an opportunity for Penn State recruiting. How ready is the coaching staff to open up communications with former recruiting targets like Rico Scott? Does the program have room to take players on the traditional signing day after the work they did in 2024 and the portal? Fitz and Snyder will discuss those topics and give an outline about how the team could react to this news to gain an edge in recruiting.

Additionally, the list of potential candidates to replace Saban includes other highly-regarded programs. When the new coach is named, will Penn State have targets in mind to try and pry away from that program? In the relentless world of college football recruiting, anything is possible and we'll discuss those ideas today.

Franklin among the names to replace Saban

On the flip side of that argument, Penn State head coach James Franklin was among the names of coaches that could potentially replace Saban at Alabama. We'll discuss why Franklin is widely regarded among the top coaches despite his reputation among his own fans.

The Penn State Nittany Lions have been active in the transfer portal for the last week, acquiring several former high-profile recruiting targets from Big Ten foes. On Today’s BWI Live Show, we’re discussing what both Julian Fleming and Nolan Rucci bring to the table from a skill perspective based on their film. Penn State getting upside with Nolan Rucci

The first part of today’s show will center around BWI’s assessment of Nolan Rucci from his bowl game film against LSU. Here’s a portion of that article from earlier this week.

It seems Rucci’s physical talent hasn’t been accentuated by great coaching based on how unnatural it seems. Despite that, he’s fast and fluid enough to win. Furthermore, Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein is known as a detail-oriented coach in regards to fundamentals. While we’re just skimming the surface of those skills, it seems like Rucci could quickly turn into a plus-pass protector.

We’ll discuss more of the context around Rucci’s play and what sort of player they’re getting out of the portal from Wisconsin. The Badgers have gone through several radical changes over the last several seasons, and the stereotypes about Wisconsin linemen are not the same as they used to be.

Fleming provides a veteran presence

While there’s little film on Rucci, Fleming is another story. The former Penn State top receiver target has extensive film and playing time at Ohio State. But what does the tape say about his usage and production with the Buckeyes?

We’ll discuss his talents, what sort of athlete he is and how he could figure into the Penn State passing attack this upcoming season. With one year of eligibility left, Fleming is trying to make an impact now.

Wide receiver discussion continued

However, the issues surrounding the wide receiver room aren't over. Penn State fans want to know why the team had so many problems getting production out of its wideouts in 2023. We'll discuss the multiple factors and nuances of the situation that ultimately led to the team declining to target the position for the final three games after offensive coordiantor Mike Yurcich was fired. We'll also discuss how new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki fits into the equation and how he can potentially fix the problem.

Lastly, we examine the hole in the transfer portal roster at cornerback. Penn State is pursuing several players at the position. We'll give you a brief breakdown of A.J. Harris and how he could fit into the room if and when he commits to the program.

Penn State University started classes on Monday, so the 2024 season is beginning in earnest for the Penn State football team. Who will be around for winter conditioning and spring football? We got a sense of that answer on Monday, with an updated roster coming from the program. We'll discuss that, transfer portal activity and the national championship game from last night on today's BWI Live Show.

Penn State roster update

There was still a lack of clarity about certain players and their intentions for their future with Penn State football. Two of them, defensive tackles Hakeem Beamon and Dvon Ellies made their intentions known last week that they were returning for another year with the program. However, several veterans hadn't made their plans known, including the team's maligned receiver room.

Is KeAndre Lambert-Smith coming back for another season? How about transfer Malik McClain who struggled to see the field last season? While some players are assumed to return, it's difficult to make that assumption in today's college football. Senior Editor Nate Bauer had a report last week about who would be back and wrote about what he knew. Today, he and publisher Sean Fitz will discuss that on the show.

Portal review

The transfer portal window is still technically open but with most of the program's targets in-house we'll review this portal recruiting class too. How did Penn State do with their efforts? Join the show to learn more about Nolan Rucci, Julian Fleming and the rest of the team's additions.

The Penn State football calendar rarely sleeps, and yesterday was a busy day for the team. There was significant portal movement on the roster, and the team's top prospects participated in all-star games. We're covering it all, plus the upcoming portal recruiting weekend already in high gear.

Penn State receiver movement

While it's been in the works for a while, former Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming officially joined Penn State out of the transfer portal. Fleming didn't announce the move, but social media got word of his intentions.

Hours before his commitment, on the transfer portal deadline for January, receiver Dante Cephas entered his name into the portal. The one-year Penn State wide receiver caught 22 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns in a frustrating season for both Cephas and fans. We'll recap his time at Penn State and discuss the transition to the team's latest addition in Fleming.

Not all of it is portal news

The team also got significant retention news on Wednesday with the announcement that veteran defensive tackle Dvon Ellies is returning for a bonus season. We'll discuss how important Ellie is to the defensive tackle rotation and what he means for Tom Allen's defense as he settles in as the new Penn State defensive coordinator.

Yet, the portal is critical for Penn State's chances next fall in their attempt to reload at key positions. Fitz and Snyder will discuss the upcoming transfer portal recruiting weekend and what fans need to know about this important window. There's already one visitor on campus, which you can read about here in an article Fitz posted Thursday morning.

Penn State recruiting update

While some of the staff focus on the portal, junior days start in January, which are an essential part of the recruiting calendar. Snyder is tracking the players joining Penn State to learn more about the program and set up the next phase for the 2025 cycle.

Finally, we'll discuss the all-star bowls that several Penn State players attended this past week. Quarterback commit Ethan Grunkemeyer, and lineman Donovan Harbour was at the Under Armour Bowl in Florida and competed during the game Wednesday afternoon. Fitz traveled down for the week to check out the practice and has his thoughts about how the duo performed outside of the game.

The Penn State Football team made a distinct shift since offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was let go in the middle of November. The team made sublte changes over the last month that culminated in the team's approach in the 2023 Peach Bowl.

While new offensive coordiantors Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle didn't change many plays, they did change some key elements of the offense that we'll discuss on today's BWI Live Show. Who is seeing the offensive targets changed took an even more dramatic shift at the end of December, which we'll explain today. We'll also discuss how that shift narrowed the focus of the offensive attack in a way that made things harder for quarterback Drew Allar.

Finally, we'll discuss the team's defensive mentality after the first drive. We'll look into how the team performed to understand if there was an impact of former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's absence.

Penn State defense set up to fail

There's no doubt that Penn State's loss of it's top two corners and best defensive player in Kalen King, Johnny Dixon and Chop Robinson. We break down how losing Dixon and King affected the Penn State defense's schematic choices. From there, we'll discuss how Abdul Carter's injury further drove a nail in the coffin of Penn State's defensive efforts.

Next, we'll highlight the players who did a good job despite giving up over 500 yards of offense to Ole Miss. Did Cam Miller and Zion Tracy show anything on film that should make fans feel better about the day they had covered Ole Miss' receivers? We'll also discuss how Abdul Carter was playing before his injury in the second quarter.

Passing attack has issues before third quarter

Why didn't Penn State get the ball to running back Nick Singleton more on Saturday? We'll detail how the game flow radically altered the plan in the second half. Then we'll discuss the day that the offensive line had in pass protection of quarterback Drew Allar.

While it's easy to point to the general dysfunction of the Penn State offense on Saturday, Allar does share in the blame for the performance. We'll take you through some of the issues hidden behind his decisions to check the ball down or scramble. We'll talk about how Allar suffered from some of the issues he seemingly overcame at the end of the season before regressing this past weekend.

Penn State football enters an unprecedented change in the modern landscape of college football this year. For the first time ever, the playoff is expanded to 12 teams. At the same time, the Big Ten's own expansion and removal of divisions means that the Nittany Lions are no longer locked in an eternal battle royal with two of the top five teams in college football in Ohio State and Michigan. The Penn State Nittany Lions put together a frustrating and dissapointing final game for fans in the 2023 season. The Lions lost 38-25 to Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta in another big game whiff for head coach James Franklin and his squad. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll discuss what went into the meltdown on both sides of the ball.

Penn State offense

The Penn State offense improved upon it's other performances against top-15 teams in postseason play, putting up 17 points in the first half and keeping pace with Ole Miss' wide open attack. But the team's adjustments out of halftime proved to be catastrophic. The team managed only nine plays on three three-and-outs during the third quarter, while Ole Miss poured on 11 points. By the time the team recovered in the fourth quarter, the game was all but over.

Quarterback Drew Allar threw for 295 yards in the loss, but was once again posted a sub-50% completion percentage in the game. We'll discuss his role in the team's offensive struggles and then discuss the other factors that led to the team's inability to put meaningful pressure back on the Ole Miss offense.

Defense puts on its worst performance of the season

While the offense struggled for meaningful moments late in a shootout, the Penn State defense was the real problem for the Nittany Lions on saturday. They gave up 544 yards of offense in the game, including 258 yards passing in the first half.

We'll discuss what no-win situation the opt-outs and injuries put interim defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter in. We'll also discuss the future of the defense and how Penn State can rebuild its defense next season under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen.

Penn State and Ole Miss trade blows early

The first half went to the Nittany Lions, who came out of the gates hot. Despite not having Olu Fashanu, Kalen King or Johnny Dixon, the team got things going on both sides of the ball. Penn State rushed for 85 yards on ten carries. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen took that momentum from the first half to average a twin 6.6 yards per carry at halftime.

Meanwhile the Penn State defense under co-defensive coordinators Robb Smith and Anthony Poindexter got to Quinshon Judkins early. The run-heavy Ole Miss offense gained one yard rushing thanks to the typically aggressive Penn State front seven. That led to several third-and-longs where the Penn State pass rush got to quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Second quarter saved by big play

But things changed in the second quarter. Ole Miss veered away from its run approach to attack Penn State's young corner. Zion Tracy and Cam Miller couldn't lock down Tre Harris, who put up 63 yards in the first half. His teammates outdid him, tight end Cade Prieskorn, who racked up 96 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Dayton Wade threw in 79 yards as well. Dart threw for 258 yards in the first half.

Meanwhile, Allar and the offense failed to find a second gear. The passing game struggled once again but was aided by a trick play from backup quarterback Beau Pribula, resulting in a 48-yard touchdown to Nick Singleton.

Third quarter implsion

Penn State's offense didn't do much to help itself at halftime. They botched a two-minute drive, giving the ball back to Ole Miss iwth a chance to score before the half, then went three-and-out on the second half's opening drive.

The third quarter was the turning point in the game for the two teams. Penn State's offense remained in neutral coming out of halftime. The team gained 14 yards to Ole Miss' 141. The Nittany Lions went three-and-out on each drive of the third quarter, showing little ability to threaten a maligned Ole Miss defense.

Meanwhile, a critical injury to Abdul Carter opened the gates for an already churning Ole Miss offense. Carter was rolled up on at the end of the first half and tried to play through in the third quarter. However, he struggled to get off blocks or play with explosives, helping to allow 57 rushing yards in the third frame.

We're just hours away from the 2023 Peach Bowl and Penn State football's chance to go six-for-six and win every New Year's Six Bowl game. To do it, they'll have to beat Ole Miss, led by head coach Lane Kiffen. 

In order to learn more about the team, we're connecting with an old friend. Former Blue White Illustrated reporter David Eckert joins the show to discuss Ole Miss, the team he now covers. He joins the show for the first time since his move down South to give us a better understanding of the team Penn State faces. 

We start the show by getting to know the Ole Miss offense. Jaxson Dart is a fan favorite for his team and someone Eckert thinks Penn State fans would love. But who has the quarterback advantage? We'll discuss the matchup and how Dart operates the Ole Miss offense. 

This week, Penn State defensive end Adisa Isaac assessed the offense he'll face this weekend. They bring a lot of challenging aspects to the game that don't have to with skill.

"Yeah, I say definitely the tempo and the personnel. They know how to get their skill guys into space and make plays. We kind of pride ourselves on stopping the run all year, and this is a team that has some good backs that run hard and some good receivers as well. So they're pretty balanced in that aspect. So we've just got to do a good job of locking that down," Isaac said. 

The running game is a focus of our conversation, as well as how Ole Miss will face off against Penn State. However, we end the conversation discussing Tre Harris and his impact on the game. 

According to Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, the most noticeable aspect of the Ole Miss defense is their multiplicity. 

"Yeah, we've been saying it all bowl prep that they're a very multiple team, play a lot of even and odd fronts. So we're going to have to be tight on communication up front, whether it's run-blocking schemes or pass protection," Allar said. 

We discuss that diversity and what it might be trying to mask up front for Penn State's next opponent. Will the loss of Cedric Johnson affect that group? 

Finally, we'll discuss that there are only a few opt-outs on either sideline. Penn State has several players that could opt out of the game but decided to play. The same is true for Kiffen's side, where Johnson is the only player not participating. Head coach James Franklin says that it's not by accident that Penn State is nearly at full strength.  

"Yeah. I think you guys have heard me talk about this in the past. These are different times in college football, and we've worked really hard to create a relationship with our players that there can be open and honest dialogue and discussions," he said.  

"We've tried to create an environment where really there's no reason for any player to opt-out. What I mean by that is all the way back to Saquon Barkley, who was being projected as a top 15 pick, there's a way to do this where the player, the family, the agents, whoever, everybody's comfortable with the plan."

The conclusion of the 2023 Penn State Football season is almost here. The team is in Atlanta, making final preparations for the Peach Bowl, which comes to you this Saturday at noon. Today on the BWI Live Show, we'll preview the game and get the latest from reporter Greg Pickel, covering the Atlanta team. BWI Publisher Sean Fitz will also give his thoughts and predictions on the matchup.

Possibly the biggest mystery this past month was the status of veterans heading to the NFL for the upcoming game. While some, like defensive end Chop Robinson, made the announcement early, others have been more elusive in their intentions. Fellow defensive end Adisa Isaac announced that he was planning to play in the game before declaring for the NFL Draft, but his participation level, along with other veterans, is still unclear.

That is, until Thursday morning. Pickel will share the latest on what Isaac's plans are for the game and how much the team's sack leader will play against the SEC foe.

Also, several Penn State prospects, including four-star running back Quinton Martin and three-star corner Kenny Woseley took part in PIAA Championship games this past week. We'll discuss how those players performed and how the team is preparing for its big celebration on Wednesday.

Expert recruiting insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz discuss what they've learned since the show last got together.

Penn State RPM Pick from both experts

The biggest recent news is that both Snyder and Fitz have a pick in for Penn State to land linebacker Alex Tatsch. The Greater Latrobe linebacker has been trending to the Nittany Lions for some time, so we'll discuss why he's seemingly a lock to land in Happy Valley.

Snyder also visited the PIAA championship games this past weekend and will recap how players like Martin, Tiqwai Hayes, Woseley, and other targets performed on the biggest stage of their careers.

Snyder has been busy connecting with recruits, including linebacker Anthony Speca. Speca took things to the next level this fall and explains in his article what he attributes to that growth. The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is looking for a new defensive coordinator heading into the 2024 offseason. With the early national signing day looming, plus the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30, the team needs to act quickly. But does Penn State head coach James Franklin already have the next coordinator on his staff? A popular option among fans is to promote from within and have safety coach Anthony Poindexter assume the role of replicating Manny Diaz’s defense.

On today’s show, we debate the merits of that against hiring a new coordinator with his own system.

Franklin opens the door to PSU internal hire

The idea of Penn Stat hiring from within isn’t a bad one. Poindexter is an excellent coach with experience who could be a candidate for the job. Franklin alluded to as much during his Monday press conference when asked about the job.

“(We’re) trying to also balance that while also interviewing and trying to decide what we’re going to do moving forward with our defensive coordinator position, whether it’s an internal candidate or an external candidate. And we’re working through that right now,” Franklin said. “But we’ll handle it like we have on offense the last few games of the season. And I’ll get into more specifics as we get together again.”

The issue is the sentiment that Poindexter should “run Manny’s defense”. We’ll discuss how that could go wrong and the challenges of any coordinator trying to replicate someone else’s scheme.

Fans questions want to know more about team building

Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will take over next year with the same question that the team had this year. How do you use two quarterbacks? On today's show we'll discuss how to best use backup quarterback Beau Pribula in any offense that features Drew Allar.

We'll also take questions from fans about the tight ends behind Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren. Can Penn State keep the same level of productivity at the position?

Lastly, the team needs to make the right moves in the transfer portal this offseason. What are the positions that the team needs to address? We'll discuss the addition of Divison II tackle Alan Herron and preview what the team still needs from the portal before the window closes in January.

It's a big weekend for the Penn State Nittany Lions recruiting department. Not only is it the final weekend to bring the Recruiting Class of 2024 together one last time, it's also an official visit weekend for transfer portal players. On top of that, news broke Thursday night that Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is leaving to be the head coach at Duke.

Penn State loses Diaz to Duke

The news didn't become official until late Thursday night, but reports and rumors swirled for most of the day that Diaz would be the next coach at Duke. Penn State head coach James Franklin addressed the news on social media Friday morning.

"We truly appreciate everything Manny and his family contributed to Penn State the past two seasons," Franklin said. "Our team and staff have nothing but respect for Manny and the leadership he brought to our program. He was a tremendous teacher, mentor and friend while in Happy Valley. We wish him and his family all the best at Duke!"

Penn State official visit weekend

The Nittany Lions have several official visits from the transfer portal here this weekend as well. Former high-four star wide receiver Andre Green Jr. announced that he'll be in Happy Valley this weekend to meet with the Penn State staff, as will Alan Herron, an offensive lineman from Shorter University.

Fitz and Snyder will give some details about what to expect from the portal window this winter, including these two visits. It's also the last weekend that the Penn State recruiting Class of 2024 will come together before the early signing period begins on Dec. 20. The duo will discuss why this weekend is important and why the staff brings this group together.

State Championship preview

Lastly, Snyder has been following the PIAA State Championships this weekend. Several Penn State commits and recruits are in action this weekend. He'll recap how Tiqwai Hayes performed Thursday night and preview the players you should follow this weekend in the final games of 2023.

Penn State defense vs. Ole Miss

Today's show is based on the By The Numbers series from earlier this week, after the bowl matchup was announced. He's an excerpt of what we discuss on the show.

From a productivity standpoint, Jaxson Dart is the best quarterback that Penn State will face this season. All the former USC commit has done in two seasons under Lane Kiffen is throw for just under 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Despite that, the team isn’t a pass-happy unit with a 60% pass ratio. The team only threw the ball on 48% of its offensive plays this year. We’ve been obsessed with the term “balance” this season with the Penn State offense. This offense truly has balance in its offensive threats.

That’s allowed Kiffen to scheme up explosive plays for the Ole Miss offense. Dart has generated 92 explosive passing plays (15-plus yards) this season, tied for seventh most among Power Five offenses. That accounted for 2,442 yards.

Drew Allar, running backs will face a familiar challenge

As for the defense, we folded in some early scouting to give fans a picture of what Ole Miss does defensively. The answer? A lot.

The official Ole Miss depth chart says that the team runs an odd front defense, with three defensive linemen and an “outside” linebacker, but the team can and does run just about every front with regularity. While they “base” out of an odd front (3-4), they play wide over, odd, wide under, and even fronts an equal amount. Despite being listed as an outside linebacker starter, Cedric Johnson has dropped into coverage 44 times out of 526 total snaps in the regular season.

To cut through the technicalities and jargon, Ole Miss deploys two defensive linemen and two edge defenders that they use in multiple ways, including odd fronts. It’s about how you’re used, not always what you “can” do. But the bottom line is that the Penn State offensive line must be ready for many different looks.

The Penn State Men’s basketball team has now lost four straight games, including a 76-67 clunker against Bucknell this past weekend. 

“It’s unacceptable. That’s on me,” he said. “We got to get our guys to completely understand how we play defense. The Penn State football team, like the rest of college football is in the maelstrom of the 2023-24 transfer portal. This first window is open for a short time, and will be a major factor in which teams are set up for success next fall. Can Penn State fill its holes and reload for the coming year? Penn State has a quiet start to the transfer portal

As of writing, only two players, punter Alex Bachetta and receiver Cristian Driver, have entered the transfer portal. That's a quiet start for the Penn State Nittany Lions who have been uncommonly good at keeping talent in house during the portal era. We'll look at previous seasons to determine if more will be on the way, or if the team will retain all its players that don't go to the NFL.

We'll also discuss names like Washington State's Josh Kelly and North Texas' Ja'Mori Maclin as players that Penn State has publicly offered in the portal. Both players are receivers, and the team is desperate to find more playmakers.

While it may go unnoticed by some, there have already been losses in the coaching ranks. Penn State analyst Ola Adams has taken a job with Indiana this week, so we'll recap his time at Penn State and discuss his impact on the program. It's a perfect segue to discuss new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and what head coach James Franklin had to say about him on Sunday evening. We'll discuss his comments and what the new coordinator brings to the table.

Finally, we'll discuss Penn State's Bowl matchup with Ole Miss. What are the early things you need to know about the next opponent? How does this group present challenges for the Nittany Lions? We'll preview the upcoming game.

Now that the season is over, several different worlds are converging for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. The transfer portal window is about to open, but the team has to secure it's Class of 2024 and make late-game adjustments to the class if the opportunities present. It's a hectic time for the staff, made more hectic by the offensive coordiantor search. We're discussing how all of the pieces fit together on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show.

We'll focus on the team's final preparations for the early signing period in December and what fans should expect out of the Dec. 8 official visit weekend. We'll also disucss the Class of 2024 rankings update from Thanksgiving and explain who moved up and why.

The Nittany Lions have successfully pulled an offensive lineman into the last few classes after securing the bulk of the group during the standard recruiting windows. This year, former Michigan State offensive line commit Andrew Dennis was the target. However, the team missed on getting a commitment with Dennis announcing earlier this week that he was committing to Illinois. We'll discuss the impact on the group Penn State has assembled and what happens next for Penn State among the late push for players in this cycle. 

Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder put together a tally of how many players visited Penn State throughout the 2023 home football schedule. He'll compare how the team did in September and October against the late-season noon kicks. He'll also discuss several other interesting nuggets he found when looking back at the current month. 

The most recent rankings updates for the Class of 2024 came out during the holiday week. We're recapping which players made significant moves in the latest On300 update. Why did Luke Reynolds and Ethan Grunkemeyer go from afterthoughts int he class to top-ten players? Check out the YouTube video to see highlights from their senior seasons.

Penn State started the season out with some promising games against non-conference opponents. Then, they hit a tough stretch of games in the ESPN Invitational. Mike Rhoades' team lost three straight to Texas A&M, Butler and Rhoades' old team, VCU. 

On today's Hoops Show, we discuss what caused the team's three-game losing streak and the thorny issues causing the team's problems. Rhoades says that the tournament was a wakeup call to reality for his team. 

"When you play in really good tournaments like that, you get exposed quickly. You had some great moments. I thought some guys gave us some really good minutes."

"And at times I thought our offense was really good and got some great execution. Just not a consistent enough play on both ends of the court, but especially defense to win those caliber of games. Our effort against Texas A&M I thought it was super. We didn't defensive rebound well enough to win that game. The other two games, I just thought we played frustrated on the defensive end, and it affected us on offense at times."

The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Michigan State Spartans 42-0 on Friday of last week to end the 2023 regular season. While it was almost a week ago, it's important to review and understand how the team finished the season. On today's BWI Live Show, we break down how the offense finished the season with its best overall performance of the season. 

Penn State puts together complete offensive performance

The Penn State offense was in rare form against Michigan State. The team compiled over 300 yards combined, passing between quarterbacks Drew Allar and Beau Pribula. Allar had one of his best games of the season, throwing for 292 yards and two touchdowns in the win. 

In today's show, we'll explain Penn State's tweaks to the offense under the new dual coordinator setup with Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle. These tweaks put players like Nick Singleton, Tyler Warren, and Theo Johnson in a position to succeed instead of other offensive players. We'll break down how the team used similar concepts to gain much better results. We'll also discuss where Michigan State was poor in defense.

Finally, we'll discuss how the Penn State defense used a significant advantage up front to shut down another offensive unit completely.

The Penn State Nittany Lions put together its most complete game of the season on Saturday in the team's final regular season contest. They defeated the Michigan State Spartans with a furious rally, pouring on 15 third-quarter points in the third quarter

Penn State offense finally gets its explosive plays

After months of frustration and conversation, the Penn State offense finally went off against a struggling Michigan State team. During the game, the offense hit explosive plays of 60, 53, 50, and 40 yards. Drew Allar hit a 60-yard pass to Omari Evans in a full-circle moment that echoed his second pass of the season against West Virginia to begin the year.

Meanwhile, Kaytron Allen ripped off two runs of 50 and 40 against the Spartan's defense to reestablish the team's big-play prowess. Nick Singleton chipped into the action with a 53-yard screen pass, with a great block from Tyler Warren. Singleton capped off his day with a 14-yard burst in the red zone during the fourth quarter.

However, things were close early; the team gained 308 yards at halftime but only 13 points. Penalties and sacks in the red zone stymied the scoring opportunities early. However, Penn State eventually showed they had the firepower to knock out Michigan State.

Defense dominant once again

As expected, the Penn State defense was dominant once again. The starting unit pitched a shutout. The defense was relentless, with six sacks during the competitive portion of the game. Michigan State put together two potential scoring drives, but Jaylen Reed snuffed the first out with an interception. Adisa Isaac forced an intentional grounding pass from wide receiver. Alante Brown.

From there, the team never mounted a threat to the Penn State defense. The starters forced seven three-and-outs and 74 yards in the game. However, injuries were a scare during the game. Defensive end Chop Robinson was stepped on during the first half's final play. JB Nelson came out of the first drive and wasn't seen again. Finally, Abdul Carter was injured and didn't return to the game.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team faces off against Michigan State on Saturday for the team's final game of the 2023 season. It's also the second game without offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Head coach James Franklin fired Yurcich after the team's loss to Michigan earlier this year.

So what was different last week, and what can we expect in the upcoming game against the Spartans? We'll discuss the plan of attack for the team when quarterback Drew Allar was under center before he was knocked out of the game in the third quarter.

We'll also discuss how the game changed in the second half when backup Beau Pribula came into the game and operated the offense.

Penn State game plan altered last week

While Franklin declined to discuss the specific issues with Yurcich's style during his Monday press conference, he did expound on how to build a good offensive game plan in college football.

"How tight can you get the game plan to allow the players to get enough reps versus all the looks in the game to play fast and assignment sound, but not too small that there is not enough things in the plan to give the defense challenges and issues.

So that is always the constant battle. I remember when I first became a coordinator, coming from a west coast system the game plan was massive," he said.

But with a collaborative effort on the offensive staff, led by tight ends coach Ty Howle and running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider, Franklin said he was pleased with the plan. They kept things lean and effective, which is what he learned in his career.

Lean is effective

Multiple times during his time at Penn State, Franklin reinforced the idea of Yurcich not trying to reinvent the offense each week.

"Not just the number of plays in the game plan, how many of those plays are new concepts, not the same play run from a different formation with a different motion. That's fine. How many of those plays are new concepts as well?

What's the sweet spot for that as well? Typically that may show up on third down and red zone or with a trick play or shot.

So all those things have to be factored in, and to me, that's where the best ones are. They're as tight as they can be with the game plan, but not so tight that it becomes simplistic and easy for the defense."

The Penn State football team got a needed win against Rutgers on Saturday with a 27-6 beatdown. It's also the final week of the 2023 regular season. We're previewing the final game of the regular season by discussing what we learned from the last several days. On today's BWI Live Show, we're discussing what Penn State head coach James Franklin had to say about his team's win over the Scarlet Knights this past weekend. We'll also give our impressions of the game.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was knocked out of the game early in the third quarter on a quarterback run. How much did that affect the way the game ended? And how much will Penn State use both quarterbacks on Friday if both are healthy? We'll discuss how Beau Pribula's role in the offense is expanding now that Ty Howle and Ja'Juan Seider are calling the plays.
