In this episode you'll learn how a leading global expert codifies the growth drivers for alcohol free beer, one of the fastest growing categories in the drinks industry.

Brendan Williams has over 20 years experience in the drinks business but began to specialise in Non Alcoholic beer when he headded up the global category for Carlsberg during a period of rapid expansion and innovation. 1.16 New Moon - Keith Villa created the biggest "craft" beer in the world, Blue Moon, now he brews with cannabis04 Oct 202100:59:55

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn why the man who single-handedly gave us one of the biggest beers in the world, Blue Moon, believes that his new cannabis beer might eclipse his previous success.

Dr. Keith Villa is a living legend in brewing circles, having not only created Blue Moon but also led the marketing and production from relatively humble beginnings to global success. For many, Blue Moon was the beer that opened their eyes (and taste buds) up to a world of flavours that mainstream lagers simply couldn't compare with. This arguably turbocharged the craft beer revolution and shaped the global beer market we know today. However Keith didn't stop there and his latest venture, Ceria Brewing, focuses on Cannabis infused beers and he describes the "Tsunami" of opportunity that legalisation creates. Keith also talks about how his new book, Brewing with Cannabis, giving practical advice for anybody wanting to start making Cannabis beers and beverages at any scale.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time we hear from Tara Nurin, Beer Journalist, Author and Lecturer. Tara talks about her newly launched book: A Woman's Place Is In The Brewhouse and she explains how women's role in brewing has changed throughout history and how modern women are overcoming challenges to improve their representation and making brewing a better industry for all.

On top of all that  that, Foxy and Will make a BIG announcement about an upcoming live Business of Beverages session in Dublin at the Grub & Gargle Festival at The Circular, they also talk about Foxy Brands THC Tea and forget to discuss Mexican Stouts.

1.15 Let's open a bar - How hard could it be, right? Kevin Demers sets us straight.20 Sep 202100:58:23

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn what it takes to make the opening of your own bar a reality.

We've all done it, haven't we? Sat in a cosy corner of the pub and thought to ourselves... "I'd love to have my own bar". We all know it's an idle dream for most but many of us in the drinks industry still secretly harbour the ambition. But what does it take to actually make it happen? Well Kevin Demers from Montreal is an absolute authority on the subject as he made the jump from juggling bartending and professional Ice Hockey to opening his own bar, The Cold Room 5 years ago. The lessons he learned enabled him to follow up with El Pequeño and Parlement shortly after, giving a hat-trick of Canada's best bars. Now he consults on other bar openings and shares his knowledge and insights with us.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time we hear from Carol Quinn, the Archivist for Irish Distillers, (part of Pernod Ricard). Carol has a very particular crow to pluck with Will and makes her case convincingly.

On top of all that  that, Foxy and Will talk about the new Guinness Microdraft dispense innovation, teh by gone days of substandard G&Ts and the also fret about the threat posed by the Haitian Mafia.

1.13 Life's a Pitch! - Tom Hurst talks dragons, differentiation and daiquiris.22 Aug 202100:59:46

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how to do an equity pitch like a pro as we talk over-proofs, offers and optimum outcomes with the man who tamed TVs toughest dragons.

In the last episode we introduced you to dragon slayer Tom Hurst founder and CEO of Rockstar Spirits,  following his raid on the the incredibly popular enterprise investment based Dragon's Den TV show in the UK. Tom had already caused quite a stir in the UK spirits scene when he had launched his range of over-proof spiced and flavoured rums. His first big break came when presenter Holly Willoughby couldn't hide her delight when trying his "Pineapple Grenade"  live on This Morning. Doubling down on traditional media Tom then took to the Dragons Den looking to make the perfect pitch. We hear how he honed his technique, who he was really targeting before he entered the den and what really goes on behind the scenes.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time we hear from the irrepressible Victor Lanson, a Champagne man, born and bred. Victor shoots from the hip as he talks to us about how hard it can be to sell a drink that "sells itself", his experiences of the highs and lows of launching his own brand of bubbly, the loss of 'mad' characters from the Champagne industry.

Not only that, Foxy and Will talk about the reaction to our WTF BrewDog? episode, LinkedIn's weird and wonderful professional groups and the meaning of the word "erstwhile".

Foxy's Tales: Kenya31 Jul 202300:35:27

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn what's happening in Rwanda and Kenya as Foxy reports on the local beverage scene and updates on the trends on the ground.

In the third of "Foxy's Tales", Padraig Fox gives us his stories and insights from a recent trip to Africa (& Portugal!). Coffee, beer, cocktails, you name it, he drank it. From craft brewery tap rooms (254) to swanky hotels, from airport concessions to street side bars, Foxy did the research so you don't have to! He tells stories of random encounters, lax security, "scheduled" riots and the one drink he'll never forget...

P.S. yes, that is Owen Wilson in the photo with Foxy. They met by chance in a bar in Kenya and Foxy forgot to tell the story in the interview!!! We'll save it for another time.

1.12 WTF Brewdog? - The real controversy you probably missed with Dave Infante.09 Aug 202100:59:49

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn how Brewdog's faux punk veneer and constant shock tactics distract from craft beer's very own Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

You've heard of Brewdog, right? Those young, belligerent upstart brewers from Scotland, sticking it to the same old corporate giants only interested in Filthy Lucre? Always controversial, there is no doubt that Brewdog are masters of marketing and publicity, riding the lightning that they make to international success across categories, continents and companies. Their beers aren't  too bad either. However do they treat the faithful army of "punks" they have created as mere pawns in a global game of high finance? Will (a sceptic) and Foxy (an "Equity punk") listen and learn from Dave Infante, a US based journalist whose recent reports on Brewdog go beyond their self-serving controversies and reveals the rising taste of hypocrisy no amount of IPA can wash away. Never mind the bollox, here's Dave.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time we hear from dragon slayer Tom Hurst,  following his raid on the the incredibly popular Dragon's Den TV show in the UK with his Rockstar Spirits company. Will he pick his trademark Pineapple Grenade or set his sights further along the top shelf?

Not only that, Foxy and Will talk about podcast fame (sort of), the rain splashed joys of an Irish summer and indoor pints!

1.11 All Time High - A Cannabis Industry Special with Lisa Weser and Bourcard Nesin.26 Jul 202100:59:47

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn what two of the worlds' leading experts on the legal cannabis industry think the future holds and what the impact will be on the alcohol industry.

In an in depth discussion we hear from both  Bourcard Nesin, Cannabis and Alcohol Analyst for Rabobank and Lisa Weser, Founder and CEO of Trail Blaze ("The Cannabis Publicist"). Taking things slowly at first we learn how the legal cannabis industry in North America has emerged from the fringes into the mainstream and how the growth experienced so far is set to accelerate. Hotly debated topics include the pace of legalisation, the target consumer, the role of CBD vs THC, the format wars and brand building in a uniquely challenging category. The big questions are asked and answered so if you don't know much about the legal cannabis industry and how it competes/compliments alcohol, this is the place to start because it's coming to a market near you!

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time we raid our archives to hear from  Tom Lix, Founder and CEO of Cleveland Whiskey Co, one of the pioneers of accelerated aging techniques and a guest on episode 1.4. Tom prompts us to recall some of our favourite guests and interviews over our first ten episodes and prompt some recommendations for new listeners.

Not only that, Foxy and Will discuss the (eventual) launch of Guinness Zero, passing fads in the drinks industry (we're talking to you alcoholic root beer) and the mysterious "pod-fade"!

A Shot of... Round #6 (our short silly quiz!)19 Jul 202100:06:10

Send us a text

Which beverage will test Will and Foxy's symbiotic relationship?

As you'll hopefully have gathered by now, the Business of Beverages brings you drinks industry insights with makers, marketers and mischief every fortnight. However we thought that we would dial up the mischief with a short quiz/game played between Will and Foxy every other week (between the "serious" episodes).

A Shot Of... sees each of our hosts take turns trying to guess which beverage is being described in cryptic clues. The points on offer vary as the difficulty changes and competition heats up!  Play along and let us know if you think you can do better! And remember, it's only a bit of craic.

With the scores at 10:3 to Will, Foxy is in the hot seat as he tries to identify the mystery drink through the cryptic clues available.

We would truly appreciate it if you could take the time to give us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts or some feedback directly. We gratefully receive and read every comment/review.

1.10 Family Ties - Militza Zikatanova explains the ups and downs of working in the family vineyard11 Jul 202100:54:52

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn how working in the family drinks business is more rewarding, complicated and challenging than working for global conglomerates.

We hear from  Militza Zikatanova, Co-owner and Marketing Manager of Villa Melnik Winery in Bulgaria about her pre-ordained journey to joining a family business that was established specifically for her and her brother to run. Militza is frank about the conflicting pressures that come with working with and for your parents, a common feature in the drinks industry in production, distribution and hospo.  Militza brings her own perspectives to the traditional & regional business from her experience studying in the USA and working in the UK for the biggest drinks business in the world. Plus she talks evocatively and with such passion about Bulgarian Wine that Will and Foxy are booked on the next plane to Sofia!

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time it's the turn of Lisa Weser, Founder and CEO of Trail Blaze, a pioneer in the world of legal Cannabis in North America. Lisa may be on the cutting edge professionally but she picks a stone cold classic for her desert island drink, one that we can't believe it has taken ten episodes to arrive at.

Not only that, Foxy discusses how he spends his days on "parental" leave, Will reflects on whether he could ever work in the family business and both lads show their numeric incompetence by celebrating our ninth episode, an episode late!

PS if you are wondering who the mystery voice is chipping on Lisa's DID, that would be the loquacious Bourcard Nesin!

1.8 If I can't sell it, I'll drink it! - Starting a successful Beer business from scratch with Rob Fink14 Jun 202100:59:13

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn how to start a drinks business from a standing (at the bar) start as we talk to the founder of the world's first dedicated alcohol free beer company.

We hear from  Rob Fink the CEO and Founder of Big Drop Brewing, the first beer company who solely offer non alcoholic products. Rob explores the challenges and opportunities that come from being a total outsider to the drinks industry as you try to set up a successful business. Rob entertains, informs and enlightens as he tell us how luck, determination and a novel approach played their part in Big Drops' growth from a half formed idea into a global innovator.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time it's the turn of Claire Mac Evilly, Corporate Affairs Director for Danone. Clare has a mysterious and romantic (we hope!) reason for choosing her drink as we discuss drinking in nightclubs, bizarre chat up lines and how to become a certified B Corp. It's an eclectic mix to be honest.

Not only that, Will and Foxy reflect on the proper way to drink a popular digestif and recount tales of flaming misadventures! Brewdog even gets a mention for some positive news (a rare event these days...).

1.6 Who holds the power and why do we let them? - Rebekkah Dooley takes a critical look at the Bar media.17 May 202100:56:06

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn how one little bar magazine cuts through all the bullshit of spirits sales, cool bar hype and the patronising of bartenders.

We hear from  Rebekkah Dooley, co-founder of Discard, a hospitality publication that breaks all the rules: Independent, Transparent & Bullshit Free. We learn how the magazine has given voice to the foot soldiers of an industry that have been abandoned by governments, manipulated by drinks companies and continuously undervalued. She also takes exception to the Bar Competition  Industry that is setting bars against each other and profiting from an á la carte attitude to rules.

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time it's the turn of Nick Curtis Davis, Head of Innovation for the Irish Food Board and an all round beverage miracle worker. Nick stretches the rules of the game to breaking point as he bends the laws of time and space in search of the perfect drink.

It's an action packed episode, we also carry out a live cannabis experiment, we do battle in an impromptu quiz and muse on the brevity of a podcast "career"!

1.4 Age ≠ Maturity - Tom Lix makes whiskey in days, not years.19 Apr 202100:46:15

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn how one man is trying to revolutionise the entire Whiskey industry by aging Whiskey in days, not years.

We talk with Tom Lix, Founder and CEO of Cleveland Whiskey Co, one of the pioneers of accelerated aging techniques that rely on cutting edge technology and old fashioned sensory techniques to create spirits that are truly unique. Tom describes how his colourful early career led to a fascination with distilling and eventually to the founding of Cleveland Whiskey Co, which he describes as "more of a technology company than a craft distiller". Tom also clarifies what legal restrictions he operates under, details his battles with the Scotch Whisky Association and talks about fermenting for astronauts!

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time it's the turn of Bourcard Nesin, Global Beverage Researcher at Rabobank and host of the exceptional Liquid Assets Podcast where his razor sharp analysis of the key industry trends, youth and good looks in comparison to his co-hosts leads to ritualistic (yet hilarious) bullying. Bourcard chooses a drink perhaps inspired by his time in Ethiopia and also turns the tables on Will.

1.3 Stop Doing Diversity - Melissa Cole speaks frankly about how we can all create better work places.12 Apr 202100:49:35

Send us a text

In this episode, you’ll learn from one of the leading Beer writer's in the world how each of us can do more to make our drinks businesses more inclusive, more diverse and, ultimately, more profitable.

We talk with Melissa Cole, author of a number of leading beer books, including the classic "Let Me Tell You About Beer" and she gives us a full and frank view on the challenges she faced breaking into an industry that still struggles with inclusion and diversity. She highlights the ongoing issues facing under represented groups in the industry. But she is as encouraging to businesses who see the value in broadening their approach, as she is critical of brewers who repeatedly show themselves up to be sexists or racists (yes, we're looking at you Founder's)!

We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. This time it's the turn of Ned Gahan, Head Distiller at Waterford Whisky. Ned leads one of the most innovative distilleries in the world whose work on Whisky Terroir is truly cutting edge and making a global impact but his choice of drink  is as local and traditional as you can get and testifies to the power of beverages to evoke memories.

In this episode you'll learn how the entrepreneur's journey is so often determined by an element that they have little control over... luck.

Karen O'Neil was a guest on our desert island last year when the world was at the feet of her newly created "honey refresher", Beekon. She had been through her fair share of ups and down as a founder of a new to world start up but all the elements for success seemed to be lining up for Beekon to explode, metaphorically. Unfortunately  it exploded literally... We explore what led up to that moment, the consequences and the chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

We don't have a Desert Island guest today as Foxy had his hands full, as you'll hear in the background!

The end of alcohol!? - David Orren says you can have all of the benefits of ethanol without ethanol19 Jun 202300:57:54

Send us a text

A synthethic replacement for ethanol that has all of the benefits but none of the drawbacks seems like science fiction but David Orren from GABA Labs thinks they have cracked the code.

David is the MD and co-founder of GABA Labs, a potentially revolutionary start up that is aiming to produce a range of replacements for ethanol. These scientifically researched, but yet to be approved, ingredients could stimulate the same neuro-receptors in our brains as ethanol. According to David and his partner Prof. David Nutt, they could do it more accurately and they would be self limiting so over indulging would be impossible. But does the science stack up? How does it get FDA approval? And what sort of business model do you use when trying to disrupt one of humanities oldest industries?

The fantastic Susan Boyle co-hosts this episode as Foxy is on a well deserved holiday.

Send us a text

Which drink used an early IBM computer to come up with over 185,000 possible brand names, only to reject them all? Which drink was advertised by a dinosaur and a mountain?

As you'll hopefully have gathered by now, the Business of Beverages brings you drinks industry insights with makers, marketers and mischief every fortnight. However we thought that we would dial up the mischief with a short quiz/game played between Will and Foxy every other week (between the "serious" episodes).

A Shot Of... sees each of our hosts take turns trying to guess which beverage is being described in cryptic clues. The points on offer vary as the difficulty changes and competition heats up!  Play along and let us know if you think you can do better! And remember, it's only a bit of craic.

Sure Fire Hit? - Gary Lavin of Vit Hit on the ups and downs of sweetness, selling and sachets.22 May 202300:59:03

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how perseverance as well as several failures in health and nutrition informed the eventual success of Vit Hit, one of the fastest growing international health drinks.

On our Desert Island we welcome our old friend, Dan Ryan (well our friendship is old, he's not old!). Dan has done everything from selling spirits in Saigon to Draught in Dublin but he now is part of the most exciting thing happening in Tea. Yes, there is something exciting happening in Tea... Unilever is spinning off it's global brands to create one of the world's largest ever "start ups", Lipton Teas & Infusions.
