Stop Saving the Day: Why Rescuing Isn’t Leadership and What to Do Instead17 Nov 202400:09:35

Can you love your colleagues enough to let them experience the consequences of their behavior?

Women in tech are great at solving problems. But sometimes we leap in to protect others from their errors and shoulder burdens that aren’t ours. It slows down our careers and increases our stress.

This episode unpacks how stepping back, setting boundaries, and trusting others to handle their responsibilities empowers not just your colleagues but also yourself. You’ll hear real-world strategies to navigate these situations with courage, kindness, and clarity.

Key Takeaways:

  • How societal conditioning impacts women in tech.
  • Why rescuing others is not the same as being a team player or leader.
  • The power of discomfort as a catalyst for growth.
  • How respecting others’ growth creates space for your own.

You matter: Embrace Bravery and Resilience Through Difficult Events11 Nov 202400:11:44

You matter.
Especially during difficult events:

  • Choosing to bravely recognize and believe in your inherent worth is brave.
  • Deciding that your voice deserves to be heard, that your dreams, goals, career, relationships, and money matter is brave.
  • Getting and staying involved in building the community, career, life, and world you desire is brave.

This week I address the emotional fallout after the most recent US elections. This is a dedicated brave space for women in tech who are grappling with emotions ranging from sadness to anger, fear, and betrayal. Wherever you are, know that your feelings are valid and that you matter.

I share some of two of the quotes helping me through this time:

  • “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.” -Star Trek
  •  “I never lose. I either win or I learn.” -Nelson Mandela

I also share a small slice of how my family's past drives my commitment to making brave choices for a better future.

This episode is a powerful reminder to embrace your inherent worth, your right to feel, and your right to take up space in the world.

Remember: you matter.

Job Boredom: Strategies for Staying Engaged and Motivated When Your Job Feels Stagnant and Safe08 Sep 202400:08:17

Listener Question: I'm in a "safe job" but this "safe job" is so boring. What do I do?
Let’s work through a career dilemma: feeling bored at a "safe" job right in a time of mass lay-offs. In this episode I share actionable strategies to navigate boredom and rediscover engagement in your career.

  • First, I urge a reevaluation to ensure your current situation is as secure as you think.
  • Then, we examine the root of your boredom. It might not be what you think it is: it is essential to differentiate between genuine disengagement and your unexpected response to reduced stress.
  • Finally, I explore practical ways to stay stimulated, both in and outside of your job.

E62: Build Your Brave Framework 2.019 May 202200:18:59

Are you ready to stress less, work less, and earn more? Then you are ready for the Build Your Brave Framework.

In this episode, I share two truths -- bravery is a skill, not a personality trait and you can build the skill of bravery -- to then walk you through how you can build your bravery right away.

Using the Build Your Brave framework you can achieve any goal that you set: sleep better, feel calmer, work less, enjoy better relationships, thrive in more interesting work, land that promotion, spend less, earn more, and everything in between.

The Build Your Brave framework has three parts:

Clarity - “I set clear, specific goals and share them with people around me.”

Momentum - “I spend just as much time feeling my way to success as I do working towards it.”

Accountability - “I choose who I want to become and do the work to become her.”

My clients radically transform their entire lives, one brave moment at a time. You can too.

Ashley shares the power of interest interviews, networking, and following her creativity. In her process, she experienced a significant breakthrough in that she didn't need to do anything alone. In fact, she shares a powerful metaphor of how investing in herself was like choosing to fly across the United States instead of walking across it alone. Both are possible, flying is much faster, easier, saves money long-term.

Ashley is now a program manager in the tech industry. She is living her dream of RVing around the United States so that she can mountain bike in the most gorgeous spots.

E60: Choosing Important over Urgent to Build Your Career, Stress Less, Work Less, and Earn More22 Mar 202200:21:12

I share how to build the habit of choosing what is important over what is urgent so that you reach your goals and create your dreams.

Especially as women we have been taught that prioritizing what someone somewhere labels "urgent" is better than focusing on what is actually important to us. In fact, most of us have been taught that choosing ourselves is selfish and wrong. We've been taught to leap towards others' urgent needs and desires.

Yet, to actually life a full life and craft your dreams into reality, you must learn and then practice the skill of important over urgent.

Listen in for much greater insight, clarity, and see me role model it for you by stepping into a podcasting break to wrap up season two.

This is the last episode of season 2. We will be back with Season 3 on May 12th!

E56: How to Negotiate in 4 Steps for Career Growth as a Woman in Tech24 Feb 202200:20:08

In this episode I teach you a transformational mindset to empower when and how you negotiate as well as a simple framework for every type of negotiation. Particularly if you are scared of negotiation or think you don't know how, this episode is for you.

Every negotiation is just a conversation and every conversation is -- in some ways -- a negotiation. Once you truly believe this, you can quickly craft a mindset and approach that drives towards clarity, focusing on a shared win-win as well as empower you with your "cut line" to walk away.

4 steps to negotiate:

  1. Show gratitude
  2. Review value
  3. Exchange numbers
  4. Give agreement

E52: How to Run Your Career Effectively so that You Work Less and Earn More as a Woman in Tech27 Jan 202200:19:09

Learning how to effectively run your career is the difference between a lot of wasted time, energy, and skill and a career that moves forward how and when you want it to.

So many people are currently in the passenger seat of their career, giving away their decision-making and authority to a manager or an institution. That. Doesn't. Work.

You must decide to claim the driver's seat and stay right there. There are four steps:

  1. Build your vision with a soundbite
  2. Surround yourself with the best people
  3. Always be investing
  4. Drive accountability for yourself

Each of these steps can radically transform your experience and future. Start with one, start imperfectly, and move forward towards a career worthy of your brave.

E50: You Build Your Career, No Professional Prince Charming13 Jan 202200:25:46

Inspiration for this week’s episode comes from one of Nicole’s clients: There are no prince charmings. Yet, too many women are acting like the professional version of sleeping beauty, waiting for the professional knight in shining armour or the prince charming to swoop in for their career. It is an enormous mistake.

Nicole shares personal stories about how she co-created bad working situations that held her back: staying at a job with a crappy manager who accused her of not being a team player (when he actually meant ‘masculine’), staying in a gendered situation that held her back, accepting poor behavior as part of the experience of getting a promotion.

How you can stop being a sleeping beauty and become your own knight with control and joy in your career.

E49: The Value of a Coach for Career Growth, Women in Tech, Corporate, Leadership06 Jan 202200:09:58

Nicole answers the number one question she gets, everywhere she does: Why coaching? ie, what’s the value of a coach? Why should a person have a coach?

A coach is your fast track to your goal, to where you want to be, who you want to be, what you want to achieve, with the least amount of effort, failure, and pain.

The experience of being coached, and the lessons from each coaching experience, never stop creating rewards and results for you. Nicole shares a personal experience of this truth.

Nicole describes in her own growth as a coach the power of internal corporate coaching and the limitation of corporate coaches. Internal corporation coaches coach you to be successful in that organisation; an independent coach supports you towards your growth and your transformation.

Long story, short: if you want to thrive and succeed as a woman in tech, coaching is the fast track to get there. KickStart 2022

Navigating a Difficult Job Market: Strategies for Maintaining Motivation and Confidence E174 19 Aug 202400:09:15

Listener Question: How do I stay motivated when it's been months since I was laid off and I've not gotten a single offer? How do I remember that I'm really good at my job when it's been months and I haven't even gotten a single offer?

I know it's tough to stay motivated and confident in your skills when facing rejection or a lack of offers. To help you stay strong, I share a simple yet brave technique: define who you are and what makes you great at your job. Write it down and say it to yourself in the mirror every day.

I also suggest engaging in creative freelance/contract/fractional work, attending networking events, sharing vulnerably with others, and uplifting fellow women in tech. Together, we can support and encourage each other during this challenging time.

Your call to action: Take a few minutes today to write down your strengths and unique value. Say them out loud to yourself.

If you know a woman in tech who could use some encouragement, reach out and remind her how amazing she is. Small acts of bravery and kindness can make a big impact right now.

To submit your question for me to answer on an upcoming episode, send me an email at Nicole@TrickSteinbach.com

Nicole shares how to use the metaphor for your success. How to turn ‘off’ and ‘on.’ How to identify your clarity, your needs, your self-care for consistency. All so that you create the results that you actually want…and not what you don’t.

E45: How to Enjoy Your Senior Career as a Woman in Tech, STEM, or Corporate Leadership 09 Dec 202100:20:03

Are you a woman in tech at a senior/executive level who feels lost? Or are you a woman in tech aiming to become a senior/executive and want to know how to enjoy your senior career? If so, this episode is for you.

Far too many women in tech are quietly unhappy. They are passed over for a promotion, and companies are not investing in them. They ask themselves, why is my career not advancing? I do what is necessary.

In a recent, and exclusive global networking event for exec women in tech one woman asked, "Am I the only one who feels lost and underfed?"  The answer was a resounding and clear, "No. You are not alone."

Like an earlier episode, it is common but not normal for women in tech to be unhappy.

We believe a lie, we believe that when we do a good job, our employers will keep investing in us, in our skills, to keep our interests and our minds busy. When in fact, we need to invest in ourselves!

That is the secret to enjoying your exec career: invest in yourself.
