| Remembering Phil Lesh | 05 Nov 2024 | 03:25:22 | |
With a blend of sadness for loss and joy for the music and memories that we will always cherish, we pay tribute to Phil Lesh. A number of friends sent in their own remembrances and musings on the man and what he meant to them. I have included them along with a substantial dose of music for an epic episode, befitting this beast of a bass player and singular musician. | Jeremy Kizina | 08 Oct 2024 | 02:41:51
In this episode I chat with guitarist, Jeremy Kizina, about his return to guitar and his recent release "Our Ghosts Follow". We dig into his background as a touring musician, his wide-ranging influences, and, of course, the Grateful Dead. I sneak in a couple of new music recommendations at the top of the show and there's a terrific mix of Dead in the back half. The excellent new podcast "The Female Bob Dylan" is a few promising episodes in and I highly recommend it. Writer, researcher & producer Sophie Abramowitz, artist & musician Sarah Bachman, and folklorist, writer & (terrific record label) SPINSTER co-owner Emily Hilliard explore singer-songwriters who have been shouldered with this title. Please do check out there show wherever you find your favorite podcasts. I mentioned a few of the many recent releases from The Modern Folk in the intro this episode. "Serf Punk", a singer-songwriter-ish album that I love, was first. Click here to check it out. "Primitive Future III" follows and that one, quite different to "Serf Punk", is largely instrumental. Proceeds from that release are being routed into Hurricane Helene relief and you can find it here. And the last one, which is also the newest one, "Crater Family" from The Modern Folk Trio Band can be picked up on vinyl here. My own album, "As We Know It" came out on September 17 on CD and digital DL via my bandcamp page JMHart.Bandcamp.com as well as on the various streaming services. I do hope you'll check it out, take it in, and enjoy it. If you would like a BrokedownPod t-shirt or sticker or other merch in that vein, please head over to my Redbubble virtual merch table. | Matt LaJoie | 03 Oct 2023 | 02:23:02
Greetings Dead Freaks! On this episode, I am proud to have Matt LaJoie join me to discuss his work as a guitarist, an improviser, and more. We unpack his many projects, dive into his history and that of his label, Flower Room Records and manage to spin a little music along the way. Also in this episode, I shamelessly plug my own upcoming album, and we manage to get a hefty dose of weird and wonderful Grateful Dead. You can find Matt LaJoie's vast catalog on the Bandcamp page for his label, Flower Room Records. His upcoming releases (Such as "Lilac of The Valley", out October 6!) will be there soon and the recent release, "On Garudan Wing" can be found directly here. Additionally Matt mentioned a few other projects such as his brother's group, Heron Hemingway and his own group, Water Babies. Do check those out. The depth of the Flower Room Records catalog is impressive and well worth your time. It's worth noting that the vinyl pressings are always lovely sounding and beautiful. As mentioned at the top of the show, my latest album, "So Below" comes out on October 6. You can find it on my bandcamp page, jmhart.bandcamp.com. | 034 - A Day Between | 27 Dec 2018 | 01:47:29
The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie. I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year. As always, please remember that we have shirts on our redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something with our sweet new logo. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!) The Brokedown Podcast is part of the Osiris network. Osiris is creating a community that connects people like you with podcasts and live experiences about artists and topics you love. | 033 - Generational Band | 11 Dec 2018 | 01:26:53
It's December and temperatures may be falling but we've still got hot jams for you. Inspired by a Bob Weir quote in this recent Rolling Stone interview, this episode digs into where Grateful Dead music goes in the next fifty years. We'll check into Dead & Company, Phil & Friends, Keller Williams, Golden Gate Wingmen, and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Then, we'll spin some terrific Grateful Dead.
| 032 - Dire Wolves | 27 Nov 2018 | 01:49:53 | |
It's late November and the year is almost gone. In this episode we chat with Jeffrey Alexander of Dire Wolves. They've got a new album out called Paradisiacal Mind which you can grab from Bandcamp or on vinyl from Feeding Tube Records in the US or Cardinal Fuzz in the UK/EU. It's a great trip and worth your time. We dig into the origins of the band and their unique sound before spinning a track from the new album. Then we tap into Jeffrey's past as a deadhead and taper. Naturally we get to talking about shows he saw and that leads us to spin some terrific Grateful Dead. As mentioned on the show (for a change), you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. | 031 - JGB Fall '93 with Lenny Stubbe | 06 Nov 2018 | 02:23:23
In this episode, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the final Jerry Garcia Band East Coast Tour. In Fall of '93, the JGB played a mess of dates back East (as they say) and a whole lot of fun was had. Our guest, Lenny Stubbe was there in Buffalo (11/5/93) and reports his recollections and overall impressions of the tour. Your host attended a couple of these as well. Naturally, talking about music leads to listening to music and some choice selections from the tour are included for your pleasure. As mentioned on the show, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Order now to be ready for the holidays! | 029 - MSG '90 | 09 Oct 2018 | 02:10:00
Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's October and although I'm ready for cooler weather, I'm still into talking about September. Specifically, September 1990. We're looking back to that first run of shows at Madison Square Garden with Vince and Bruce joining the Grateful Dead on the keys. While this era is often maligned, there's great stuff to be heard. In fact, this run has spawned a Dick's Picks (#9) and a Road Trips release! We're combing through what's to bring you some great playing from the dawning of a new era. I completely failed to mention the merch in this episode (AGAIN) so I'll just add here, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Greetings, Dead Freaks! Here, in the waning days of Summer, we bring you a chat with Grateful Dead publicist, biographer, and author, Dennis McNally. We discussed his books, Desolate Angel (on Jack Kerouac and the Beats), A Long Strange Trip (on The Grateful Dead, of course), and On Highway 61: Music Race and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom. Dennis also tells us about his next project before we do what we always do and dig into his history with the Grateful Dead. You can find out more about Dennis' writing on his website DennisMcNally.com. After the interview we spin some serious Grateful Dead music that I hope you will enjoy. After or as you listen, be sure to check out the Wet Tuna website https://wettuna.blogspot.com and grip a copy of their album "Livin' The Die" or the very limited live release "Great Wet Wonder". | Catching Up | 15 Aug 2023 | 01:13:27
I've been catching up on so much listening these days that I thought I'd share with you a few choice releases that I've been enjoying from The Jauntee, Dave Heumann, and The Modern Folk Trio Band. Afterwards I pay tribute to the late Robbie Robertson. This all adds up to a set of interesting tunes including a closing medley of Phil & Friends, Jerry Garcia Band, & (of course) Grateful Dead. It was difficult to narrow things down but, as usual, leaving something unmentioned doesn't mean I haven't loved it. Instead, we're focusing on a few artists that I've spoken to on the show who've released some great new music. The Jauntee's brand new album "Anything" is available on streaming services and directly via their website TheJauntee.com. Dave Heumann's latest, "Themes From Blue Honey" is available via his bandcamp page. The latest Modern Folk Trio Band release, "Always Be Recording ii" is available as a digital download as well as a bonafide compact disc via the label's Bandcamp page, bud tapes.bandcamp.com. Then Will Soll of Prana Crafter joins us to discuss his new album and, of course, some good old Grateful Dead. As mentioned in the episode intro, we still have shirts that are on our redbubble page. | 023 - Summer Tour Sampler | 10 Jul 2018 | 02:07:22
It's July, the Summer heat is here to stay and there's no better time to be on the road. In this episode, we head out on the road to check in with Dead & Company and Phil Lesh. Both bands are doing some great things on stages all over the place so I've pulled a couple great jams to either cool down or heat up your listening space. These jams can do both. After that, we reach into the vault for some good old Grateful Dead. We even take a request! As mentioned in the episode intro, we still have shirts that are on our redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something with our sweet new logo. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!) | 021 - Featuring Phil Cook | 05 Jun 2018 | 02:01:11
Hey there, Dead Freaks! This go-round I fill you in on how things went down when Osiris went to Delfest and have a great conversation with Phil Cook. Then, of course, we get into some Grateful Dead. Phil shares details on his new album, People Are My Drug, and his band, The Guitarheels. We also talk about his work with Hiss Golden Messenger and covering the Grateful Dead. We’ve included a great new track, “Steam Powered Blues”, from the new record. You can order the record (in whatever format suits you) from Phil's website: PhilCookMusic.com As for the Grateful Dead music in this episode, the show was released as Dave's Pick's 20 but, we're listening to a fine Jim Wise audience recording. As always, details are in the shownotes: https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2018/06/021-featuring-phil-cook.html
| 020 - Back To Oregon with Jeff Conklin | 22 May 2018 | 02:13:26 | |
This week we resume our trek up the Oregon trail with WFMU host, fellow Dead Freak, and walking musical compendium, Jeff Conklin. As before, Jeff has selected a few more great tracks from the Grateful Dead's many visits to Oregon. We listen to and discuss those along with some other great stuff including the magic of audience tapes, and the fabulously deep catalog of fellow traveler Matt Valentine. Please consider heading over the WFMU.org to check out Jeff's show, The Avant Ghetto- which mixes all manner of deep psych, folk, and Grateful Dead- along with a mess of other great programs. Listeners and Dead Freaks, this episode features a terrific chat with WFMU host, Deadhead, and encyclopedia on far-out music of all kinds, Jeff Conklin. Jeff's show on WFMU is The Avant Ghetto and there he spins all manner of psychedelic and experimental tunes including some terrific selections by our beloved Grateful Dead. We talk about his development as a Deadhead and then dug into studying the vast riches resulting from the Dead's many visits to the great state of Oregon. | 018 - 50, 40, & 30 Years Ago | 17 Apr 2018 | 01:09:30
Coast, at least) the trees are blooming and the coldest days seem like they might be behind us. As such, I thought I might put together something to accompany the gradual warming, a little mix to go along with the first open-window days of the season. Plus, I did promise you kind and patient listeners a shot of good old Grateful Dead. Wait no more. This mix reaches back 50, 40, and 30 years to 1968, '78, and '88 for material. The tracks range from jams to cowboy songs and it hangs together despite the disparate eras represented. After the music, I do spend a few minutes detailing where the cuts come from so as to provide a little bit of context. So pull back the curtains, throw up the sash, crank the stereo and get on down. We'll be back in May with a guest some more Grateful Dead. | 017 - Golden Gate Wingmen | 03 Apr 2018 | 01:35:25
We've got a special and unusual episode for you this time around. I had the great fortune to join my good friend and head of Osiris, RJ Bee, at a Golden Gate Wingmen show late last month. The show, at The Hamilton Live, was the kick-off for a short tour and it was a blast. To make things even more exciting, we got to meet and interview the band. Jeff Chimenti (keys, vocals), John Kadlecik (guitar, vocals), Jay Lane (drums, vocals), and Reed Mathis (bass, vocals) were friendly, forthcoming, and entertaining. You'll hear our interview with the band and about an hour's worth of tunes from the show in this episode. Thanks to RJ Bee for making the interview happen. Thanks also to DC Music Review for allowing me to share a couple of Jason Herman's beautifulphotos from the night. Thanks as well to taper Alex Leary for making and sharing his excellent recording with us.
| 016 - Bobby Songs Set 2 | 20 Mar 2018 | 02:08:33 | |
Here we go with set two of our look at Bobby songs and his collaboration with the late John Perry Barlow. RJ Bee returns with more music and discussion to follow episode 15's great first set. Hopefully we can live up to that standard with this episode. RJ is the founder of the Helping Friendly Podcast as well as the Osiris Podcast Network and an all around great guy so please take a minute or two to check those sites out. Set Two: Jack Straw (1972-09-15), Playin’ In The Band > Estimated Prophet > Drums > The Other One > Truckin’ (1978-01-06), Throwin’ Stones > Sugar Magnolia (1985-04-03)
| 015 - Bobby Songs | 06 Mar 2018 | 01:52:32 | |
We begin the Spring thaw with a visit from my good friend and the founder of both the Helping Friendly Podcast and the Osiris Podcast Network, RJ Bee. RJ wanted to talk about Bobby songs so that's just what we'll do. We also, spend a fair amount of time discussing the work of the late John Perry Barlow. Barlow's writing for the Grateful Dead along with his advocacy for an open internet via the Electronic Frontier Foundation are both keys to the very existence of this podcast. He will be missed and forever held in the utmost esteem. In addition to chatting about Weir, Barlow, and being a Grateful Dead fan, RJ and I assembled a set of tunes for you to enjoy. Check us out in two weeks for the second set.
| Organ Fairchild | 18 Jul 2023 | 01:48:39 | |
This episode features a chat with Dave Ruch of Organ Fairchild. A fairly new organ trio out of Buffalo, New York, Organ Fairchild features three players who have been jamming together for about 40 years. Their sound blends classic Organ groove with jam band sensibilities stretching their grooves out live and making danceable new sounds to thrill the listener. I talked with Dave about the group, their history together, playing in Dead cover bands in the 80s, how he came to know Tony Rice(!), and more. tune in for our wide ranging chat, stick around for a taste of Organ Fairchild's music and, of course, some Grateful Dead. The big news from Organ Fairchild is not only are they releasing their second album "Leisure Suit" in September, but they will be embarking on their "Dead of Summer" tour playing sets of originals and Grateful Dead music. The tour kicks off on July 28 in Baltimore, MD and rolls through the Days Between wrapping up on Aug. 6th in Worchester, MA. You can see all of the dates on their website: OrganFairchild.com. I'm pleased to share both the original single, "Chamelonious Monk" and a teaser of the upcoming single "He's Gone" in this episode. Be sure to watch your favorite streaming platforms and, of course, their Bandcamp page for the new album which comes out soon. The Brokedown Podcast is part of Osiris Media. | 014 - Playing In The Band | 06 Feb 2018 | 01:22:31
We've made it through January and the days are getting longer. Although the men in the top hats have disturbed the groundhogs, hibernation isn't quite over so we have a one-part episode this month. Here's hoping the hot jams warm your home. This go round, I'm dusting off a mix that I assembled several years back that amounts to a fairly epic survey of the song Playing In The Band. In true Grateful Dead fashion, this jam covers a lot of ground and should not disappoint. The full breakdown of included clips is listed below. We'll be back next month with a guest and a ton of music for you to dig upon. In the meantime, thanks for tuning in, please share this with your friends, and consider posting a review on the iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

We cover a fair big of ground in this set, from the 60's to the 80's, with some rock, blues, and jamming throughout. Once again, this will be a two-parter, continuing with Ep013 in two weeks. So spin this up and hunker down by the fire as we wait out the Winter together. Thanks again to Andy, for coming on and bringing his wealth of knowledge along with his sense of humor. | 002 - April '78 | 11 Apr 2017 | 02:10:09
This month's episode focuses in on four shows in the Middle of April of 1978. Working their way out of the South, the Grateful Dead played Duke University on 4/12, VPI (now commonly referred to as Virginia Tech) on 4/14, William & Mary on 4/15, and Huntington Civic Center on 4/16. These four shows display a tidy cross-section of the band at the time and, fortunately for us, some quality tapes circulate.
The band is working into the layout of the modern Grateful Dead, with song oriented first sets and second set jamming but the jams aren't only in set two. In the episode, we talk a little about each show and then we've assembled a pair of 'sets' from highlights of the four nights. Playlist: Set 1:Jack Straw (4/16), Dire Wolf (4/14), Beat It On Down The Line (4/12), Peggy-O (4/16), Cassidy (4/16), Scarlet Begonias > Scarlet Fire (4/16)
Set 2:Bertha > Good Lovin’ (4/12), It Must’ve Been The Roses (4/12), Dancing In The Streets > Drums (4/14) > Drums > NFA > Morning Dew (4/15), Johnny B Goode (4/14) Find more information at the blog at our blog. | December 2022 | 13 Dec 2022 | 02:22:27
Greetings Dead Freaks! The last episode of 2022 is here with a variety of new (and old) music recommendations coming straight from my playlists to your earholes. Its definitely been a year over here at Shrunken Road Studios and I thank you for sticking with me through it all. In addition to the recommendations, I'm taking one last chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 shows with a healthy mix that gets good and weird. Please check out these fine releases as heard in the episode: Sunburned Hand of the Man is a psychedelic/experimental music collective that has had many members, many forms, and many sounds over the years but they have consistently made great, weird, music for decades. The recent reissue of "Headdress" from Three Lobed Recordings throws back hard to the sound of the band 20 years ago but it could well have been recorded last week. Or next. Grip that here. Or go to the Sunburned Bandcamp page and check out "Archive Dive" which contains the fuller excerpt of the excerpt played on the show as well as a few other live cuts which, you'll find, are not the same as what I presented. That's who these guys are; an ungoverned morass of sound and spirit. Ride along or get off the bus. Get Archive Dive or, even better, their entire digital discography for the cost of an album at subunrnedhandoftheman.bandcamp.com. Spiral Joy Band is a long running group leaning here with their traditional instruments into the outer realms. Making spiritual, meditational, music with traditional instruments is not new but it's a zone they homesteaded upon for some time as their existence and personnel intertwine through the years with Pelt. This latest is called "In The River" and is a bit of an homage to Paul Metzger (get to know him!) whom they had just seen perform when this was put to tape. You can grip the LP via bandcamp SpiralJoyBand.Bandcamp.com or from the label, Feeding Tube Records. Lastly but by no means least, Mike Gangloff (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers, Eight Point Star) has released a beautiful solo album; his first for some time; entitled "Evening Measures". Released by VHF Records, "Evening Measures" cleaves closer to traditional than the selections above but still leans into drone capturing a unique work of beauty. This one is out now and has done many a turn on my turntable. Get yours from VHF Records. The Brokedown Podcast is part of Osiris Media. | Eli Winter | 13 Sep 2022 | 02:54:48
Eli Winter returns! Previously appearing in a short chat for ep 47, he's back for a full length interview and an amazing new self-titled album. Although it's just his name on the front of the record, this album finds Winter collaborating with a fabulous array of artists including Cameron Knowler, Yasmin Williams, David Grubbs, Ryley Walker, Tyler Damon, and the late jaimie branch. I've included a track from the album and it's followed by a lengthy blast of Grateful Dead from Chicago's Kinetic Playground. Winter's latest album is entitled, "Eli Winter" and has been released by the amazing Three Lobed Recordings. You can find it, along with an astounding collection of other music at https://threelobed.bandcamp.com.
