| 479. Victor Kass (LLNN) | 29 Dec 2024 | 01:15:14 | |
This is a bit of a different episode for me. This was born from a friend showing me LLNN's album, "Unmaker", and becoming OBSESSED with it. Initially this was an album I was getting into heavy going back to the gym, but couldn't shake the hold it had over me and the feelings it would evoke out of me. Feelings of anger and despair and hopelessness. What I didn't anticipate was my foot injury that led to having surgery and being laid up a few months later, and in the darkness of sitting in my bed late at night I'd listen to this album more and I eventually came to this realization that sometimes we need to wallow in something to really help us process our emotions and work our way out of these negative feelings. This is my chat with the bands new vocalist/guitarist Victor, where we dive into some of these emotions that the bands music brings out. We get into how Victor joined the band, how it was for him to find his way into music that he didn't necessarily have a hand in creating but understanding its impact. Victor also shares what it was like growing up in Denmark and how he first got into playing music, some of his early influences as well as talking about the small scene that he and others were building. We talk about what's in store for LLNN in the new year, touring stateside and more. | 478. Sicksense | 22 Dec 2024 | 01:26:02
Join Robby and Vicky and I as we get into the end of Vicky's last band and the journey she went on as that wrapped up, and how that lead into her joining/starting Sicksense with Robby. We also get into the resurgence that nu metal has been having in recent years, and how that has been for Robby given his past fronting Stuck Mojo, and reflecting on the quick rise of the genre, and then the hate it received for so long. We talk about the importance of being true to yourself and not chasing trends. We also talk a bit about how Robby and Vicky have taken what they've learned from their other bands and time in the industry and how they are using that to make more informed decisions with what the band is trying to accomplish in the future. All this and more in this chat with the Sicksense vocalists.

Join Tucker and I as we talk about AZ, where Tucker was on tour that day, our experiences visiting the state, and how it along with other pockets of the US are starting to become hot beds for great shows, and if that's due to better promoters who want more for their scene, or bands/fans finally coming together to support live music in their area? We also talk about 20+ years of Thursday's career, memories surrounding the release of War All The Time, the impact that had on the scene as well as the youth facing the uncertainty of adulthood after 9/11. We also touch on Tucker finding himself once Thursday had disbanded, what it's been like since the band reunited. Tucker talks about his new project, LS Dunes, how that started, expanding on friendships he'd had with everyone else to now being bandmates. The importance of trusting your gut and not overthinking things and more in this chat with the Thursday percussionist. Join Dino and I as we talk about the bands latest remix album, Recoded, on the day of its release.

Dino talks about growing top the youngest of 7 siblings and how the diversity of musical influences helped shape the musician he is today. We wax nostalgic on 20 years of Road Runner United, and how he was the guinea pig for that project. Looking back on the first Brujeria album cover, the interesting story of the people who were putting the cds together and more in this short chat with the metal legend.

| 379. Alex Erian (Despised Icon) | 04 Dec 2022 | 01:35:27 | |
Join Alex and I as we chat before he literally has to finish packing and catch a plane for Despised Icon's European Tour. We talk about aging technology and how a lot of times there's nothing really wrong with the old thing, we just tend to move on. That led way to discussing how bands now a days have the tools and resources to learn how to be better musicians than Alex and others of our age had to figure it out through trial and error. We talk about the beginnings of the Deathcore genre, how the Despised Icon guys were one of the first to start using the term, and printing it on merch, but not THE first to coin the phrase, and how it was trying to get on tours when you're not really shown love in either of the scenes you're putting together for not being enough of one or the other. We also talk about Alex's transition in life to working in the hospitality field and how he's found success doing that and much more in this chat with the Despised Icon frontman. | 378. Jake Luhrs (August Burns Red / Heart Support) | 21 Nov 2022 | 01:20:11
Join Jake and I as he takes some time out from the bands touring schedule while in Leeds to talk about mental health, I reveal how the new Clerks movie really effected me and dealing with loss and getting older.
We go into how art is one of the few things people don't ever move on from when it was originally consumed, while we as people are always awaiting the next new thing in life and tech, but music and movies and such are preserved in the time that we take them in.
Jake talks about the process of putting together the first Heart Support Festival, what he learned about being on the other side of booking bands and assembling a team to help him put together something that is worthy of all of the bands time, as well as the message he hopes carries through with the festival from the attendees and anyone associated with it and more in this great chat with the August Burns Red frontman.

We also get into producers in metal and heavier music, their roles when working with bands, and if the era of the super producer helped or hindered the scenes they were shaping with their sound, or if bands not sticking with one person allows for more growth and so much more in this nearly 2 hour chat with the Chelsea Grin guitarist.

We also talk about the shift in musicians actually talking about being into their own music, as well as even admitting when something wasn't good. Being our authentic selves, and how we each are working towards that, as well as talking about some real stuff as well.

Join Jack and I as he and the rest of the Dead Poet Society guys make the trek to a gig in Chicago. We get into being on the road and traveling and how things that Jack has noticed about the world, and how it may have changed him.
Jack also gets into working from the road, if it's hard to not suffer any burnout if he's always working all the time, which led us to talking about the bands journey up the ranks over the last few years. How hard it is to make any sort of headway in the industry, and how the lack of transparency in that money and connections is what gets people there...in addition to the bands hard work of course.
We talk about the shifting landscape of how bands put out music, where it may be heading, and how Jack and the Dead Poet Society guys believe in making an album versus dropping singles and more in this chat.

Join Tyler and I as we talk about Tyler and his band overcoming being a musicians type of band and how he still gets nervous/excited before going on stage. How he recently had a moment where he enjoyed being at a show as a spectator laying on the grass and not watching the show, but listening to it and how perception isn't always what it seems. We also get into being an old soul, how we think that might just come from being comfortable with ourselves as we've gotten older, how that has translated over to his career of not really fitting in any one place, but fitting in wherever the band is and finding success through the bands work ethic. Tyler also talks about owning his own label, how he and his wife were pen pals before getting married and how they've traversed their relationship with both being touring musicians and more in this conversation. Deron Miller returns as the guest on the podcast. We talk about the literal meaning behind the bands upcoming album, Synergy Restored, and the journey it took to get this album out. I reflect on that with Deron from the last time he was on the show a few years ago when this was still an "in the works" album. We talk about being true to yourself, the music industry now versus 20 plus years ago when CKY were at the height of their popularity, why Metallica didn't need the exposure from Stranger Things. Why Deron believes that more of our youth needs to get into rock/metal, and what he hopes for the genre moving forward. We also talk about what it's been like for Deron to see the youth of today through his teenage kids. We then get into the weeds of the music business, and I blow Deron's mind with how much Naughty By Nature wanted to play a show and so much more in this chat. We talk about living the best of both lives of a musician where he gets to write and record while still also touring a bunch, and how not normal that is within the business. Austin reveals how he went about writing this new album from a lyrical perspective, the fun of word play within lyric writing and touring some legends like ZZ Top and finding the middle ground of playing an opening slot for 30 mins versus getting to play a 2 hour headline set. Austin also dives into the trilogy of music videos he released and telling a story between them all, if he ever wants to get into directing/acting himself as well as how he makes songs with lines that are "shirt worthy" and much more in this chat. We also get into the impromptu acoustic set Rory played at Blue Ridge Rock Fest and how that all came about, and if the band would ever do more acoustic stuff in the future and much more.

Join friend and former co host Daniel Terry and I as we do what we always do, talk about any and everything on a podcast.
Dan and I get into the weeds of the podcasting process, and how we get excited about the episodes we do, but HATE waiting to drop them when we start stacking content. Dan opens up about deciding to make better lifestyle choices, and how that led to him losing weight, getting sober and finding a new sense of confidence in himself and ultimately why he left Discography Discussion and how that gave way to him going out on his own with DFT’s Dungeon.
We also talk about meting each other for the first time in person, being there for each other to talk about the things going on in our lives and so much more in this look into our friendship.

Join The Lord, Nelson that is, and I as we talk about meeting people through doing the podcast, and what we’ve learned about ourselves and others through this medium. Lord Nelson shares how it was growing up in a large family and being the second youngest out of 5 children, and also how it was for him being in Stuck Mojo touring all the time when he had his own family back home. We also get into some deeper talking points about traveling and getting to experience different cultures and how it differs from ours here in America, as well as our shared experiences of spending time in the Carolina’s and how maybe some parts of the country are celebrating the wrong parts of their history and SO MUCH MORE in this awesome chat with Lord Nelson. | 365. Andrew Herman (Johnny Booth) | 25 Sep 2022 | 01:42:30
Join Andrew and I as we start our conversation about how he has started bringing various vocal items on the road with him to ensure he doesn't lose his voice, which leads to us talking about when something goes from a hobby to to being something you're more dedicated to and invest more time and money into.
We also touch on how the band is pretty in house when it comes to a lot of what you see from the band, from graphic design, editing and so forth and if that's intentional to not have this message altered in any way or if it's out of necessity, and if the guys have thought about making Johnny Booth more of a one stop shop to help other band with album art, editing videos, putting out music etc?
Andrew and I talk about Long Island, and the love/hate relationship most have with the city, growing up in the hardcore scene, finding acceptance in music and in life, doing things for yourself and much more in this conversation with the Johnny Booth frontman. Enjoy.

Enjoy this with 3 x's In line skating X Games Gold Medalist Jaren Grob and I as we talk about being at the X games where Tony Hawk landed the first 900, if he felt something bigger was on the cusp of happening for action sports leading up to that even, how it impacted all action sports for a few years.
We also talk about seeing the world differently as a skater who looks at things as possible transitions and such to skate on. Being a dad and having his son starting to get into various sports and skating as well, being able to do these things with him and the duality he faces as someone who maybe wants to push his kid to doing more in skating, but also as a parent not wanting your kid to get hurt.
We talk possibly transitioning out of skating, what that life looks like for Jaren, growing up in UT and traveling the world at such a young age and how that was for him and much more.

| 363. Alfonso Civile (Heartsick) | 14 Sep 2022 | 02:13:30 | |
This was taken from a livestream we on did on our various socials after a weekend of Heartsick almost winning a slot on this years Furnace Fest. Over the course of the two days of that competition we saw the band almost pull out another win for them to have the opportunity to play another legendary fest, only to have the whole experienced marred by the gatekeeping nature of the fans of that fest, who at times would say the band didn't belong, weren't "hardcore enough" and even banding together with other fans/bands just so Heartsick didn't win. This "outsiders not welcome" mentality reminded me of how it goes against the ethos of hardcore and metal, which is about community and belonging when you don't fit in elsewhere, but how this mindset is really how the culture has always been. Join Alfonso and I as we talk about this experience, how it's sadly on par with a lot of experiences Alfonso has had being in a band as a POC, how representing and bringing in different cultures into their music has lead to the bands unique sound and a lot more in this in depth conversation about acceptance, community and finding your voice through hardcore music. How it is for him having a college aged kid who's being affected by this. We talk about me getting off Facebook and how that adjustment has been to my social life, and things we've noticed by integrating with people in person and if there will be more of a shift to people getting away from social media or diving further down the rabbit hole. Andrew and I talk about shared grief of losing close friends and family over the last few years, how it was for DGD to play Swanfest without Tim and ultimately what the bands first tour was like going through the cathartic experience of grieving the loss of a brother while also getting the healing that everyone needed while playing for all the bands fans each night and a whole lot more in this conversation with a great friend. Join Justin and I as we talk for the first time after being introduced to each other by mutual friend Matty Mullins. Listen as I kinda awkwardly explain that after a few years of people telling me I should have Justin on the show, that I didnt know who he was or that he was even in a band, but was a guy I saw around at shows and the bar pre/post show with friends.
We then get into what it was like for Justin to leave touring behind and the adjustment process for him to adapt to "normal life" and who he was, and wanted to become. We also talk about deciding to live out in Muskegon away from the busier city life of Grand Rapids.
Justin talks about how he doesn't really create/play music anymore and even though he dabbles in various aspects of music in building amps/cabs and pedals that he doesn't really ever want to pursue it as more than a hobby. We reflect on unnecessary guitar and gear purchases, first guitars and bands that got us into playing instruments.
Enjoy this longer chat that covers a WIDE array of topics.

Join John and I as we talk a bit about his recent autobiography, Hoseshoes And Hand Grenades, and how the approach to the book was different than most bios, in that it felt like John was actually talking to you about his life.

| 347. Fabio Grimdrap (Trollfest) | 10 Jul 2022 | 01:25:24 | |
Join Fabio and I as we talk about TrollfesT entering the Eurovision contest, and how the movie was actually more accurate in the portrayal of the contest than I had originally thought. We discuss how the show was able to help get the band to another level with promotion and exposure, and how different it is for metal and hard rock to be more accepted one mainstream media like that overseas versus here in the states.
We then crack open some beers and Grimdrap reveals how he has been home brewing beer, which leads us to talking about our own experiences with that, and the patience it has taught us.
We also touch on being in a band with 7 other people, if managing those relationships has traversed into Fabio's daily life, and finding your role within various social dynamics.

Enjoy this short(er) chat with Brett from Steaksauce Mustache. See YEARS ago we did a chat when the show was under a different name, and the file got corrupted and the chat was never to be heard. Well now we get to do it over and theres more to talk about, like the band becoming know for being "the hot dog band" to "the diaper band" and how the band has evolved and grown since our last chat. Challenging fans who see the band live to let loose and break free of the standard metal show going aesthetic of standing there looking bummed with your arms folded. We also dive into where the band could go as far as breaking into other mediums of entertainment, all in a quest to earn as much money as possible to buy up the worlds supply of hot tubs.
