130. 6 Lessons from 6 Years in Sleep No More24 Feb 202500:20:06

I'd say that a professional dancer might have one or two "big" jobs in their career. While a dance career is fluttered with many different kind of jobs, its rare for a dancer to have one that checks so many of their desires off their list. Sleep No More was that job for me.

By the end, I performed 10 roles and over 1,200 shows. I left literal blood sweat and tears in that building and loved every moment up to the end.

Performing 6 nights a week is no easy feat but in that space I learned how to be a better performer, cast mate, partner, and leader.

In this episode, Brandon breaks down his main takeaways from 6 years in Punchdrunk's Sleep No More in NYC.

129. Ask BTWP: "I'm 34. Is it too late for me?"19 Feb 202500:10:59

Theres a new place to ask Brandon your questions and it's right here in the show notes!

In this episode, Brandon talks about starting your career in your 30s. The question reads:

"I am starting from square 1 at the age of 34, but I want to give it my all. Is it too late for me? I'm moving to NYC later in the year and was beginning to look into what would be a good training course plan while I'm there. I have ideas but if there are any episodes you recommend I listen to or any advice you'd like to give I'd really appreciate it!"

120. 30 Days of Reels Challenge - 3K in 30 Days23 Jul 202400:17:24

In June, my sister Jill invited me to do a 30 days of reels challenge with her. These days, Instagram is showing more reels to non-followers and she thought it would be fun to see what could come of it. I agreed.

In this episode, I'll take you through my journey and how I gained over 3 thousand new followers on Instagram by posting a reel a day. For me, it's not really about getting a larger follower count but more so the implications of the large following.

My people hiring me for jobs, dancers taking my class, and my real life community expanding.

Social media makes it easier than ever for us to connect, communicate, and share. These days, you're more likely to get some to reply to your DM than an email. Being able to communicate effectively and create positive relationships in your DM's is a great way to utilize this tool.

In this episode, Brandon talk about when, why, and how to reach out in the DM's. Past that, he also talks about some common mistakes dancers make and why they should let go of expectations.

#AskBTW: Separating Professional + Personal Accounts20 May 202100:12:15

When I coach dancers, many of them wonder if they should separate their personal and professional lives on social media. I understand the desire to do so BUT labeling our accounts as only one thing, limits the sharing possibilities and doesn't represent us as whole people. These day's, directors are not only hiring dancers/teachers/choreographers for their talents but also for their personalities, values, and beliefs. It is all important.

In this episode, Brandon explains why he believe one IG account is more than enough. He talks about why it's important to run a consistent and active Instagram account and how adding a second account will make it more work than is needed.

Make Your Social Media More Inclusive18 May 202100:08:47

The best art reflects the times and society. I also think that the best art challenges the times and society. Dancers (and artists in general) have a responsibility to create spaces that support creativity, new ideas, and reflect our community.

In this episode, Brandon shares four ways to make your social media accounts more inclusive. Making changes like, sharing your pronouns, capitalizing each word in hashtags, and adding image descriptions and closed captions to your videos are effective ways to promote inclusion on social media. In this episode, Brandon talks about these strategies and why they're important in our lives today.

The Value in Your First Five Years29 Apr 202100:16:32

In reference to @Garyvee's viral call to action to new graduates, people between the ages of 22-26 have the most time, energy, and lack of responsibilities they will ever have in their lives. Therefore, the first five years of you creative/artistic lives are the best time to dream big and take risks.

In this episode, Brandon outlines the first five years of his post grad life and the risks he's happy to have taken in that time. He will also explain why you should you should do more NOW and why he views this career as a marathon with sprints.

Why I Don't Pay for Auditions Anymore27 Apr 202100:13:58

In every other industry outside of dance, interviewing or auditioning for a position is free for the person applying. In some cases, companies pay people to audition for them. Somehow, the  charging  dancers audition/application fees has become a common practice in our community.

In this episode, Brandon talks about why he's resistant to paying audition fees. This year hit the arts (and specifically dance) community especially hard and may dancers and companies are struggling to stay afloat. However, this year has also given our community time to reflect, restructure, and create new/better practices  as we move forward.

Investing in Your Career (with Money)22 Apr 202100:15:33

When we think of how we invest in our careers, we may think about all the time and energy we've put in to get to where we are. However, there's something to be said about investing with money. In the dance industry, money can be tight for a lot of dancers but when we invest our money in the right places (and the right people), we can see incredible returns.

In this episode, Brandon talks about why it's important to invest in opportunities that provide an experience, information, or access. He'll also explain why class, workshops/intensives, and media, are great places to start investing regularly.

119. The #1 Video You Need to Put On Instagram18 Jul 202400:14:10

I'm out here at UNCSA for the week and having a blast. I actually use to come out here every summer when I was a kid so I'm feeling some nostalgia this week.

I'm working with dancers from the age of 16-23 in both technique classes and creative process.  One of the classes I was asked to teach was a marketing/social media class for dancers and was thinking about what I would do if I was new to IG or not an avid user.

In this episode, Brandon talks about the #1 video you need to post if you don't post anything else. In today's audition scene, directors and choreographers are using IG as both a tool to hire and vet dancers for auditions. If you don't have a good dance video online, in this episode I talk about why I would get one up ASAP.

Auditioning For Jobs You Can't Do20 Apr 202100:14:33

In college we are told to "get good at auditioning" or "auditioning will be your job." But what happens when you are already booked and another opportunity is presented to you? You might feel inspired to go and "just be seen" or use it as a "networking opportunity." Before you show up and put on that number, theres a few things and alternatives you should consider.

In this episode, Brandon talks about why you should stop auditioning for jobs you cant do. He'll offer solutions and alternatives that will help dancers maintain positive relationships with new and current employers/collaborators.

Working for "Free"15 Apr 202100:12:23

People LOVE asking dancers to work for zero to no money. And when I say people, I'm talking about directors, choreographers, and other people who want to exploit a dancers love for their career. Advocating for fare pay for dancers is a must, but what do you do in situations when money is limited? What should we consider to be a fair payment for our expertise and services?

In this episode, Brandon breaks down forms of payment that might actually be acceptable in place of cash. How can we do the projects we enjoy and still get compensated/feel respected for the work we do? In this episode we dive into this and why exposure is not an acceptable form of payment.

Avoiding the Comparison Trap13 Apr 202100:16:34

As many of us found our social media scrolling time increase in the last year, we may have also found ourselves comparing ourselves even more to our peers. Sometimes it can feel like everyone else is working or doing big things and meanwhile we feel stuck, unsuccessful, or unhappy with how we are spending our time.

In this episode, Brandon talks about his own struggle with the comparison trap and his solutions to this epidemic facing creative social media users. How can we better focus on ourselves and our achievements and stop comparing our success to what our colleagues are achieving?

Create Your Own Work NOW08 Apr 202100:17:00

It's audition season and I know you're all working hard to book jobs from other people. However, what do we do when no one is offering us a job?

Answer: We build the job ourselves!

Many of us think of our careers happening in this order: Dancer ---> Choreographer ---> Teacher. However, each of these take years of practice and play to master. What we need to do is start investigating these other avenues now.

In this episode, Brandon talks about the importance of creating your own work and the benefits and adds to your dancer tool belt. He talks about projects and work you can do TODAY with the resources and time you have available.

Internship, Apprenticeship, Work Study, Oh My!06 Apr 202100:13:35

Job descriptions for these types of positions vary from company to company. Unfortunately, many of these positions are unpaid and many dancers agree to them without understanding the responsibilities that they include. What questions do we need to ask and how do we make sure we have all the information we need to make good and informed decisions.

In this episode, Brandon explains the benefits and shortcomings of working as an apprentice or intern. He also talks about how these positions are traditionally misleading and what to be aware of when you take on this kind of job.

Talking to Your Parents About a Career in Dance01 Apr 202100:16:40

When you're growing up, it's normal to hear "You can do anything you want in life!" But there's a moment (or a few  moments) when you're approaching adulthood that your parents start asking what "actual" plans you have for the future.

It's not easy to dive into a career in dance but convincing your parents you're going to make it work is a challenge in and of itself.

In this episode, Brandon reflects on his own talks with his mom and how their conversations evolved over time.

How to Slate...and What Not to Do25 Mar 202100:09:21

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to run its course, companies and shows are utilizing virtual auditions and video submissions more than ever. Many of these institutions are strongly considering permanent implementation of these practices moving forward. Even after the pandemic comes to an end.

Slating is a short introduction which usually  includes your name, agency, and other basic info about yourself. This part of your submission SHOULD be short and simple. However, many dancers tend to make mistakes. Some are technical, like lighting and background noise, while others have to do with speaking too fast or adding distracting movement.

In the short episode, Brandon will talk about common mistakes he's found when watching dancers slate at the beginning of their video submissions. This episode will help simplify slating and have you slating with confidence in not time!

Reels... Not the Instagram Kind23 Mar 202100:12:29

Making a performance reel is a right of passage for dancers as they approach graduation. Some people edit and create new reels for every audition they submit for. We want to present ourselves in the best light but don't always know how to put our reels together.

What do casting and artistic directors want to see?
What's a good length and how do we pick the right footage.

In this episode, Brandon provides an outline for dancers to create a great reel they can be proud of.

118. Inspiring Employers and Profiting from Rejection with Claude "CJ" Johnson10 Apr 202400:53:06

CJ and I met back in 2016 while working with Shannon Gillen at Springboard. I was a year into my career and CJ was navigating the end of his college experience. As many dancer are in their early 20's, CJ was full of curiosity, drive, and ambition. Today, not much has changed. Now he spends his time between NYC and Europe as both a dancer, collaborator, and choreographer.

In our talk, CJ talks about big pivots he's had to make over the years, seeking out the worlds most inspiring choreographers, and how dancers can better navigate their careers.

About CJ:
A Chicago native, Cj is a dancer, choreographer, and movement director. After finishing his studies at The Chicago Academy for the Arts and Suny  Purchase College, where he was awarded the Adopt-A-Dancer Scholarship, Claude  then became a full-time company dancer with A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham from 2017-2022  where he became a Princess Grace 2021 nominee. Claude has gotten the opportunity to perform works by Kyle Abraham, Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Aszure Barton,  Johannes Weiland, Doug Varone, Kevin Wynn, Nicole Von Arx, Keerati Jinakunwiphat, Princess Madoki , and many more. As a performer and black queer artist, Claude dances to translate the human experience to audiences to recognize the art form of dance as the best catalyst to motivate self-expression and social change. In any artistic space he believes his responsibility is to increase the knowledge and perspective of his community’s vast  experience.

Stop Dancing Like a Student16 Mar 202100:11:07

You may be seeing "2 years professional experience required" on a handful of audition postings. The truth is, dancers are booking these jobs without meeting this requirement. So why not you?

In this episode, Brandon will explain how he made the jump from dancing like a student, to dancing like a professional. Many collegiate dance programs prepare dancers to be strong technicians and help dancers prepare for long careers. When it comes time for dancers to work professionally, what can they bring to studios and auditions that take them past being strong technically?

**This episode is for dancers who are about to start auditioning for professional jobs. Holding onto a student mindset is helpful as you continue your further education.

Setting Your Teaching Rate09 Mar 202100:15:02

Setting your rate is such a challenge! With every studio facing challenges and costs of business, we need to keep our rate fluid and changing on a case-by-case basis. How do you put a numerical value on your teaching ability? At first, talking about money can feel weird or uncomfortable, but we have to be able to articulate how much our time and knowledge are worth. More importantly, we need to be able to talk about WHY our time and knowledge are valuable.

In this episode, Brandon talks about four factors to consider when setting your rate as a teacher:

1. Location- Where are you teaching?
2. Constancy- How often are you teaching?
3. Time Cost- What do you pay out of pocket to teach?
4. Time Value- What is your time worth?

Here, you'll be able to find a rate that works for you AND the people who are employing you to teach their dancers.

116. Tackling the Dance World with Artistic Director, Joshua Blake Carter27 Mar 202400:54:20

I remember talking to JBC for the first time in 2015 when I was considering a position with Giordano Dance Chicago. He is the definition of charisma and Mr. Chicago Dance World if you ask me! It wasn't until the following year that I got to perform a new solo by him and a friendship was formed.

JBC has been a great resource for me over the years and in our conversation we got to  peak behind the curtain to see what it's like to be an Artistic Director, understand what the other side of the table sees, and what the hope is for the dance community as a whole. Enjoy!

About JBC!

Joshua Blake Carter is the Artistic Director of Dance Kaleidoscope in Indianapolis, IN. Originally from Atlanta, GA, he spent 14 years in Chicago with Giordano Dance Chicago, first as a dancer and then as an administrator and Director of Giordano II, a position he held for 10 years. During his time at GDC, Joshua created three original works for the main company and nine original works for Giordano II. As a freelance artist, he has created works for dance companies, theater companies, and events across the nation. Joshua was the 2009 winner of Wonderbound’s (formerly Ballet Nouveau Colorado) national choreography competition dancemakers2.0. In 2013, he was commissioned to create a new work for DanceWorks Chicago’s DanceMoves choreography competition, and he was awarded the Producers’ Panel Prize by the Ruth Page Foundation for his work, Ripen. Joshua’s choreography for Disney’s Newsies at the Paramount Theatre was nominated for a Jeff Award and a Regional Broadway World Award. Other commissions include Missouri Contemporary Ballet, Nomi Dance Company, Visceral Dance Chicago, and Artifact Dance Project, as well as an original work for Embarq with Joffrey Ballet. In 2016, he created the finale for the event Sing! Featuring Elton John. Joshua has been an Artist in Residence with Brenau University, Glendale Community College, Illinois State University, Salve Regina University, and Southeast Missouri State University.

115. Building Your Own Success with Founder of FireWALL Dance Theater, Elisa Alaio23 Mar 202400:33:27

Although many dancers dream of making larger cities like NYC or LA their homes, this isn't the case for our Guest on todays episode. Elisa and I met back in 2018 when I took a road trip across the country with my friend Owen. We made a stop in Pittsburgh where Elisa took ous out and let us crash on her couch for the night. Years later she would invite me to teach at her FireWall Dance Theater Summer Intensive and we.d be friends ever since.

In our conversation we touch on the importance of community, building your own opportunities, and the blur of a work/life balance and why we love it!

More about Elisa:

Elisa-Marie Alaio is a native of Brooklyn, NY and a graduate of Point Park University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in dance with a primary focus in modern/jazz. Elisa is the founder and owner of fireWALL Dance Theater, currently operating as a drop in dance studio in Pittsburgh. fireWALL was established in 2013 as a modern/contemporary dance company, known for their ability to story-tell in an abstract and theatrical way. fireWALL currently has a resident professional dance company along with a team of young, aspiring dancers that perform and compete nationally. Over the years Elisa has curated and choreographed over twenty full length productions, many that have toured throughout the east coast and have been recognized in magazines, newspapers and critics. Elisa is currently a faculty member at Point Park University and Seton Hill University!

114. Prioritizing Quality over Quantity in Our Training22 Mar 202400:11:47

"Please stop expecting superior results from mediocre effort." -- Dr. Shante Cofield

This quote really hit me this morning as I was drinking my coffee and made me think about how we show up to class.

In this episode, Brandon rants about the importance of prioritizing quality over quantity in class and workshops. While its important to just 'check the box' from time to time, we also want to find ourselves moving the needle of our effort more often than not.

As a dancer, Hannah has worked with and performed works by choreographers such as Chelsea Thedinga, Peter Chu, Brandon Coleman, Martha Graham, Shannon Gillen, and Paul Taylor. 112. When I Will STILL Work For Free19 Mar 202400:11:34

In our community, there is a lot of talk about working for free, valuing our talent, and being paid what we deserve for the work we do so well. A lot of advice around working for free revolves around early-career artists and the hoops they have to jump through. However, as some one who has worked for free in the past, there are times when I STILL would and times I never would and don't think you should either.

In this episode, Brandon talks about two types of jobs that he would still do for free and why. Our careers revolve around relationships and skills. How do we nurture both and find joy in discovering new ones?

111. What No One Tells You About Setting Your Rate18 Mar 202400:07:42

It's that time of year again! Summer teaching and choreographing is how a lot of dancer's support themselves over the slower performing months. However, when we set our rate, no one ever tells us what the "right amount" is.

In this episode, Brandon breaks down what studio owners are thinking and what they probably wont be telling you. It important to set the correct value on your work so you can 1) support yourself and 2) not finish a job feeling resentful but fulfilled!

128. Get Better at Dance Auditions17 Feb 202500:16:17

The truth is, auditions are set up for magic to happen, not necessarily to show someone at their best. If they were, every audition would be multiple days to show growth and consistency. Unfortunately, the time and money to make that happen just doesn’t exist in our world at the moment.

Although they aren’t my favorite pastime, the reality remains that auditions are the barrier between me and the jobs I want most of the time. Therefore, I have to find a way to make them work for me. Luckily, auditioning is just a skill we need to add to our tool belts.

In this episode, Brandon breaks down the three best practices to get better at auditions:

  1. Go to more auditions
  2. Use class as a way to practice picking up and performing material quickly
  3. Find ways to step out of your comfort zone (new classes, environments, experience)

110. Become a Multi-Hyphen Artist18 Mar 202400:12:23

Dancer's are no longer just one thing. They never really have been. But these days, dancers are simultaneously making their own work, teaching classes, setting other peoples work, and taking on additional skills/responsibilities.

In this episode, Brandon talks about the importance of being a multi-hyphen artist and why you can be even as you primarily focus on your dance journey.

109. Make Decisions. Make Mistakes. Take Responsibility.17 Mar 202400:12:15

As a mentor, I want to offer only the best tools and resources for the dancers I work with. However, what they do with that information is up to them.

In this episode, Brandon shares why decision making is such an important factor in a successful dance career. We face so many obstacles on our journeys and our ability to make decisions in the face of constant change is paramount for what were able to accomplish along the way.

108. Three Ideas to Abandon ASAP16 Mar 202400:16:11

As we start our careers, we create an idea of what it will look like. We build up stories and images in our minds about what it will be like to have success, and set goals around finding stability. More than that, we can feel like we have a grasp on what is correct and struggle to open our minds to other ideas. However, what if letting go of these ideas are the keys to our success?

In this episode, Brandon talks abut abandoning your ideas of success, security, and being right, to open up more possibilities. How can we move forward in our careers with abundance and be ready top pivot when needed.

106. Dealing with Nerves 10 Mar 202400:05:53

As performers, we're going to face high stakes moment regularly. For some of us, that may mean dealing with nervousness and anxiety around performing more often than others. In this short mindset episode, I want to encourage you all to acknowledge those feelings WITHOUT projecting them onto your audience, even if it makes us feel better in the moment.

105. The Big Five Personality Types with Danny Coleman07 Mar 202400:48:06

I'm in Phoenix for the weekend celebrating my little brother, Connor Coleman. BUT I was hanging out with my older brother Danny and we started diving into the different personality types we work with. The conversation was too good NOT to record.

See where you fall in the Big Five Personality Types HERE

About Danny:
As a trainer and coach for 12+ years, I learned that it didn’t matter how knowledgeable I was or how many certifications I got unless I understood people.

I became obsessed with psychology and behavior change. I read 450+ books (yes, I track them. I had a lot of free time in my twenties) on communication, motivation, influence, human development, business, management, and behavior change. The only fiction I’ve read is the Hunger Games series. Expanding my tastes is something I’m working on.

I took all of that information and wrote a book with my mentor and friend Dr. Jade Teta called “Next Level Tribe” and began speaking at colleges and online seminars, conducting workshops, and building programs for coaches and managers to improve their leadership skills. Things like:

- How to communicate in ways that actually influence behavior change
- Teaching in simple ways to make your ideas stick
- Building confidence and self-esteem to move through fear and anxiety
- Understanding key active listening skills that build connection and retention
- Utilizing the principles of motivation to make habits stick

In 2019, I joined a health and fitness company to build a $1M coaching program (with some amazing people) and oversaw hundreds of clients going through our curriculum, managed a team of brilliant coaches, and applied all that book knowledge with real human beings.

Now, I am the Head of Operations at JillFit, where we help trainers and coaches build and run online businesses. I also head up The Coaching Academy, where I teach coaches, managers, and leaders key skills that actually drive behavior change.

If you dig psychology and behavior change, let’s connect!
