| The powerful benefits of hanging out, with Author Sheila Liming | 07 Feb 2023 | 00:29:42 | |
My guest this week is Professor Sheila Liming, author of Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time which shows us how just getting together can be a potent act of resistance. Almost every day it seems that our world becomes more fractured, more digital, and more chaotic. But Sheila has the answer: we simply need to hang out more. The book is called Hanging Out and in it, she explores what it means to kill time socially, in the presence of others, and why doing that matters. It’s styled a manifesto – a defense of what once felt very normal and has now started to feel like a dying practice, especially since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic. Her vision for the future would be one in which social priorities are recognized as priorities. It would be one in which all facets of life – from work to urban planning, to the structuring of public space, to social behaviors and manners – are organized around the expectation of social activity and the need for humans to hang out and relax in each other’s presence. That’s a vision that also hinges on the taking of time; we have to take the time to allow ourselves to be less productive in a strict, material sense and more productive in a social, communally networked sense. When we are more socially connected we are more likely to feel a commitment to our community, and a sense of responsibility to our wider world. Being locked away in our silos, only encourages a self-centred approach to life. We need a whole and heart-centred connection to others and to the eco-system that sustains us. Thanks Sheila sharing the simple art of hanging out and the powerfully positive impact it can have in our lives. Thank you also for showing us that not one size fits all when it comes to the concept of hanging out, but that we can all find ways to connect that suit our individual personalities.

| Going cruelty-free with sustainable plant-based leathers with Luxtra founder Jessica Kruger | 17 Jan 2023 | 00:31:07 | |
My guest this week is Jessica Kruger, Founder of Luxtra, a conscious, cruelty free, & sustainability -focused luxury brand of plant-based leather accessories. In 2020 Luxtra certified as a B-corporation- a new type of company that balances purpose with profit, using business as a force for good. There's no denying fashion is a super-saturated market, so competition is fierce. Like in almost any industry - Luxtra are a small player trying to compete with businesses that have deep pockets and heritage brand names. Jessica grew up in Australia and moved out of home when she was 20, moving from Sydney to Paris. She had dreamed, since she was 10 years old, about living in Paris, so she leapt at the opportunity when it came up in university. Later she moved to London to start a meat-free restaurant called Ethos . It opened in 2014. Ever since, her life has been about trying to create businesses that help people adopt more plant-based / cruelty-free lifestyles. Her biggest goal is to make an impact in terms of animal welfare. The way she is doing this is by creating non-leather products that are beautiful and desirable, so that more people will feel inclined to make more cruelty-free choices in their lives. Thanks so much Jessica for bringing us beautiful non-leather luxury accessories so that we can start to make changes in our fashion consumption towards the health and well-being of animals, people and the planet. Thanks also for showing us that we can make good choices when it comes to animal welfare and that we can have accessories that are conscious, cruelty-free & sustainability-focused.

| Saving the animals from our fashion choices with SLAY documentary film director Rebecca Cappelli | 10 Jan 2023 | 00:37:20 | |
My guest this week is Rebecca Cappelli is an award-winning filmmaker & public speaker. A French citizen and a mandarin speaking professional, Rebecca leads the non-profit project Let us be Heroes for the health of people, animals & the planet. She is the director of SLAY, a feature documentary about inhumane practices involving animals in the fashion industry. Rebecca went to China alone at 18 years old to study Chinese mandarin, then had to graduate in France because Chinese unis were not recognised internationally, then she moved back to China at 25. Her China dog is rescued from dog meat and he made her think more of how we treat animals, then in 2015 she had a spontaneous awakening 97% of fashion students surveyed after watching SLAY declare not wanting to use any animal skins in their careers (that was 37% before watching) Thanks so much Rebecca for the powerful work you do in raising awareness around animal welfare in the fashion industry and for creating a film that holds up a mirror to any of us who still buy clothes and accessories that contain animal skins. Thanks also for showing us how to open our eyes and make different choices for the benefit of the world we live in & for those sentient creatures we share the planet with. | Scoring at life with football TV presenter Alison Bender | 22 Nov 2022 | 00:35:49
This week's guest is Alison Bender, a football reporter and TV presenter. When she was ten years old she knew she wanted to be a presenter but her teachers told her it was a terrible idea. Fast forward to now and she’s living her dream, travelling the world interviewing some of the greatest footballers and managers of our generation. As a little girl she said she wanted to be a presenter but that dream was poo pooed. She was also growing up in a household where her mum was an alcoholic, so how did that shy little girl find her way? She would see opportunities and then put herself in front of them. She made her way into TV, but after working on scripts for the presenters she knew it was the presenting that she wanted to do. She said her first screen tests were terrible, but she learned what she needed to do, kept trying and eventually landed a gig. Covid put the Kibosh on live sport. And then last November she discovered she had breast cancer. Both these life hits, made her sit back and reassess. She realised she need to have something that wasn't reliant on her time. So she created a course helping young people learn the ropes of TV presenting. Now she is able to support the next generation of female sports presenters come up through the ranks, at the same as leading the way on our screens. Thanks so much Alison for sharing behind the scenes of the footballing and TV world and for helping give similar possibilities to young people who want to follow in your footsteps. Thank you also for showing us that it is possible to have big dreams and by putting the right steps in place you can work towards achieving them.

Even though her family then moved to the city for her to go school she kept her memories of the mountains and her love of the wild. She had an adventurous spirit and as a young woman headed off to New York, working jobs that she had to, but also making the most out of life.

| From burnout to bravery to break-through with Sandra Wright | 08 Nov 2022 | 00:33:44 | |
My guest this week is Sandra Wright who went from extreme adrenal burnout to re-calibrating her life and becoming a bravery coach to encourage stressed-out individuals, juggling busy careers, teams and personal lives to balance emotional wellbeing, in order to communicate successfully and find fulfilment from within. As a child, despite a broken home, she'd always been sporty, academic, content and outgoing. And growing up and heading out into the world, she went straight from school into retail management, cheeky, likeable, memorable, with escapism as the driver. She was adventurous and an adrenaline junkie. But her fast living came with set-backs. A serious car crash on the motorway, a head injury sustained at work, unhealthy relationships, and eventually she was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. She had to learn to slow down. She went on a retreat to train as an emotional well being coach and realised she needed to learn to look after herself too. Her purpose became to support others to be happy, with themselves, their decisions and the environment and systems that they operate within. When they have lost faith she held hope for them that there are options. She shone the light to help them find themselves. She appeared to go through the next evolution every 7 years to find her true north, and each 7 years the vision of who she is becomes becomes clearer. Thanks so much Sandra for sharing how we can be Brave To Break Free from what’s not working for us and learn to live more balanced lives. | Transforming pain into purpose with Green Queen founder Sonalie Figueiras | 17 Oct 2022 | 00:37:19
This week’s guest is serial social entrepreneur Sonalie Figueiras. She is the founder & editor-in-chief of Green Queen, an award-winning impact media platform advocating for social & environmental change in Hong Kong with a mission to shift consumer behaviour through inspiring & empowering original content. Sonalie paints a picture of what the climate crisis consciousness in Hong Kong and Asia as a whole and what she is trying to do with her Green Queen Media Platform. There were definitely some clues in her childhood to the woman she became – not least in being bullied for being different, but more importantly how she used a natural journalistic flair to create magazines to entertain and educate her peers, from a young age. Then her health journey took her down a long and frustrating path in which she experienced medical misogyny and a series of no answers. That was until she decided to take her own health and well-being into her own hands. Out of the ashes of all those seemingly wasted years she created her life around health, well-being & green living. She talks about giving people choices, ideas, stories and information to live a healthier, greener, kinder life. And if she could rip up the system and start again she would focus on circularity, degrowth, indigenous learnings, biophilia, regenerative systems, celebration of difference and matriarchy. Thanks so much Sonalie, for creating a media platform that encourages debate on the topics around climate change and green solutions. Thanks also for showing us how we can rise up from our own personal set-backs and channel our phoenix-like energy into something bigger than ourselves. | Loud & Proud- getting your voice on the airwaves with The Podcast Boutique founder Lynsay Gould | 26 Sep 2022 | 00:35:53
This week’s guest is Lynsay Gould founder and CEO of The Podcast Boutique, a podcast production company that champions indie podcasters and helps get more women’s voices heard through podcasting. She also started the Podcasting for Business Awards and most recently the podcast network We Are Emmeline. It's been a tough few years for everyone. Typically for her though, she doubled down in her work as podcasting seemed to explode during the first lockdown. She’s realised even more than before how important freedom is in her life and work. From a working class family, happy home, they had all they needed but not all they wanted. Her parents believed in her and she grew up hearing ' you can have anything or be anything you want if you work hard enough'. Always very entrepreneurial - full of ideas to make money and start mini businesses. She left home for university before her mum got sick with Cancer so returned home to look after her. She passed away 2 weeks before she found out she was pregnant with her eldest daughter. Finding a lump in her throat that was suspected to be something sinister (believing that she'd lose her voice) she decided to start her podcast agency which is about helping women to use their voices and speak up and use their voices to be heard. Only 11% of top podcasts by women and she wants to change that. Lynsay knows what she is working towards. Equality for women. No gender pay gap. More women in podcasting in front and behind the mic. It's why she started Emmeline podcast network. She believes that using your voice no matter what, even when it feels like things are stacked against you. One voice can make a difference and create a ripple effect that can create change. Thanks Lynsay for giving so many more woman a platform for speaking out in the world, and wishing you well with the Emmeline Network. | Putting the Va Va Vroom back into your v@ginal health with Kim Vopni | 19 Sep 2022 | 00:38:07
This week’s guest is Kim Vopni, vagina coach, pelvic floor specialist and author of Your Pelvic Floor, a practical guide to solving your most intimate problems. She believes it's time for pelvic health to be discussed & offered to all vagina owners & that it's time to break through taboos & redefine how we think about women’s health. It took her awhile to figure out what she wanted to do...and then once she was in her career, she was laid off after 9 years. Thankfully she had started a little side gig that has been her main thing for over 13 years now. Her 40's were a challenge... perimenopause! She had never heard of perimenopause at the time and was lost. She herself had Rectocele & Uterine Prolapse. Having always been a healthy thriving person, to be sidelined by crazy symptoms was frustrating. Ultimately it led her to great opportunities to learn, improve her own health and be able to help others. She was already living her purpose but it added fuel to her fire surrounding the lack of awareness and education on women's health. She offers online programs and coaching to help women prevent and overcome pelvic floor challenges. There is so much suffering associated with pelvic health and so many people living less than their best life. She is not interested in suffering and wants to ensure others know they don't have to. She believes courage is standing up for your beliefs knowing you may be met with resistance but doing it anyway. Thanks Kim for opening up the dialogue for vaginal health and making it normal to talk about so that we can get help to address any issues we have. Thank you also for showing us how not to give up on our vagina’s when they have seemingly given up on us.

| Escaping gravity- the final frontier for saving our planet, with former deputy administrator of Nasa, Lori Garver | 12 Sep 2022 | 00:32:18 | |
This week’s guest is Lori Garver, former Deputy Administrator for NASA & author of Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age, describing how she drove the commercial space program with Elon Musk against the wishes of Senators on both sides of the House, whilst in a misogynistic, male-dominated NASA culture. The last two years have been challenging for us all. Lori increased her activist nature as much as possible to help drive to a better future. One of the ways she did this, was write a memoir that uses her career at NASA to help light a path to a better future for us all. As she outlines in the book, when she left home and went to college, she started to consider how she could best impact the world. She worked for John Glenn on his Presidential Campaign, which is what got her into space. The Challenger and Columbia accidents were both pain-points that showed her that human spaceflight had gotten off-track. The government led system was rewarding contractors and congress more interested in their own agenda, than true progress. Out of these literal ashes, she helped craft NASA policies and programs to reduce the cost of space transportation and make utilizing space for broad and valuable purposes more accessible. As a woman who has reached the one of highest echelons of NASA, being a role model to others is an important aspect of her later career. She began a Fellowship for collegiate women and gender minorities, which now offers 50 paid summer internships annually - with over 200 alumni currently. We went to space over 50 years ago, and the most important thing we learned is about our home planet, Earth. What we have learned about our changing climate from space, has allowed us to understand what is happening and how to adopt ways to adapt and reverse the damage from humanity's dependence on greenhouse gas emissions. Thank you so much Lori for giving us a bird’s eye view on the world and showing us how continued space exploration will give invaluable insights into how to protect our planet, and give us a future w Brave New Girls podcast champions women rebel raisers moving mountains for people & the planet. | The Future of Food with Sentient Ventures Co-Founder, Alexandra Clark | 05 Sep 2022 | 00:43:54
This week’s guest is Alexandra Clark, venture investor & co-founder of Sentient Ventures which was recently launched as new £30m investment vehicle today designed to spur growth in firms developing meat-free animal alternative products. The fund taps into firms fuelling the shift to net zero and removing animals from every stage of the supply chain. The Pandemic has simply brought front and centre the dire state of the planet and our food system and supply change and made change more pertinent but also easier to communicate. On a personal level, Alexandra had just moved back in with her mum to have a baby before lockdown so it turned out to be a very special and bonding experience on many levels. Alexandra's mother is from a large farming family so that shaped her upbringing. She had never liked meat as an infant, and her mum says she would spit it out, and at around five she fully understood it was dead animals and never ate it again. When she left home she travelled a lot, and loved India and its holy towns where it’s illegal to eat meat. That blew her mind. She wanted to understand the world and all the wonderful and diverse cultures we share this planet with. She settled in Brussels and lived there for 11 years. Becoming a single mother, she needed to be closer to family so quit her job, and her life in Brussels, and moved back to the UK to have a baby just before lockdown. She had been working in policy in Brussels to encourage a shift to a more plant-based diet, but when she moved back to the UK she got involved in start-ups and Venture Capital and co-founded Sentient Ventures to fund companies developing superior foods to enable more people to stop eating animals without having to give up the enjoyment of animal products. | Ungluing where you're stuck, with the Collage Coaching Technique Founder Andrea Watts | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:38:06
Andrea Watts is the author of Collage as a Creative Coaching Tool and creator of The Collage Coaching Technique™ an arts-based approach to coaching that reconnects you to your inner wisdom and is a powerful way to get unstuck as you explore and express the hidden experiences and mindsets that influence how you feel, think, and behave. From a work perspective, Covid meant she had to take her coaching practice and training online, this caused her to find a creative way to transition the Collage Coaching Technique online. It's not surprising she ended up with a creative business. She was a child who enjoyed making things and playing a lot. She was always very curious and wanted to know how things worked. She’s one of 4 children, and the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica. She was brought up in a Christian home and her faith and spirituality remain important to her. Motherhood was her biggest adventure in her early adulthood. Teaching and learning from her daughter, playing and being creative with her. She loved it. She stayed at home with her for 2 years before getting employment. Her last paid job was where she experienced the biggest challenge, because she was becoming more aware of what she found fulfilling. Being unable to do this affected her wellbeing and identity, so she went to see a careers coach. Her vision is to see it being used as a creative coaching tool for releasing people’s potential globally. Her coaching practice positively impacts her clients and helps to create the changes they want to see. She trains other coaches so am making an impact by introducing a new tool to the coaching profession. While not intentionally, she’s aware that her work inspires others and encourages them to use creative approaches in coaching. Thanks so much Andrea for sharing this creative collage technique that anyone can use to gain real insights into where they’re stuck and what they really want from life. She realised that she had a passion for helping businesses and entrepreneurs to grow so a few years after this she set up ‘The Entrepreneurs Godmother’ and helped many people including The Apprentice & Dragons Den winners with their businesses. | Optimizing your brain with Founder Portia Asli | 25 Jul 2022 | 00:35:08
This week’s guest is Portia Asli, a licensed engineer and founder of Optimyzed Brain. She helps entrepreneurs optimize their brains for high-performance using a science-based method that supports people to prioritize their brain health and empower them with actionable ways to increase their mental performance for success in business. Founding Optimyzed Brain Portia went from a small offline consulting practice to building and launching a global-based business during the pandemic, helping company leaders optimize their brain health for peak mental performance, engineering a step-by-step science-based system that improves sleep, energy levels, concentration, focus, and mental clarity, less work hours and more more quality time. Portia emigrated at the age of 10 with her family from Iran to Canada. Hard-working immigrant parents role modelled strong work ethics in her but also being a woman immigrant in North America provided the freedom that didn't exist in Iran and this was the motivation to seize the opportunity to travel, explore and discover how she could create a positive global impact She went to a top University and worked hard but burn out and depression during her rigorous engineering studies began a 15-year journey of studying how our lifestyle and behaviour impacts our brain performance. Now she helps driven senior leaders to achieve great heights by helping them optimize their brains for peak mental performance through science-based micro behavioural and lifestyle improvements. When striving for success brain health & mental performance can take the back seat. This can show up as stress, anxiety, overwhelm, brain fog, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, insomnia, procrastination, and low self-confidence. She is helping senior leaders improve their sleep, and nutrition, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance mental clarity and focus in less than five weeks.
Thanks Portia for sharing how you have developed ways to help people to optimise their own natural abilities so that they can be their most effective, productive and happy. | Not everything is rainbows & unicorns, says The Brain Lady Julie Anderson | 20 Jun 2022 | 00:38:31
This week’s guest is Julie Anderson, otherwise known as The Brain Lady. She has studied natural health, psychology, psychoneuro-immunology & the field of brain personality connection. With further specialism in depression, anxiety disorders and brain function, she helps us to discover our own personal brainprint, & how to make the most of it. Julie explains what a brainprint is, and how, after the two years we have all had we can use our brains to help us recover and build resilience for whatever is ahead. Julie was the middle girl of 5 daughters with an alcoholic abusive father was jailed for manufacturing meth-amphetamine, but she was always a positive child and understood that his problem was his problem and not hers. However she had a car accident at the age of 18 and the chiropractor who was meant to be healing her was a sexual predator, and it took her a couple of years to recover. With her faith and training herself in self-care, she overcame the trauma, keen to not remain haunted by the man. Thanks Julie for taking us on deep dive into our brains and how they can work for us and not against us, and thanks also for showing us how we can make the most of our own unique brain personalities no matter the circumstances we find ourselves in.
