This is a major turning point, with Fair Shot cafe & charity founder Bianca Tavella22 May 202300:34:26

Send us a text

My guest this week is Bianca Tavella the founder and CEO of Fair Shot, a registered charity & unique social enterprise cafe which is her response to the unbearably high unemployment rate amongst adults with learning disabilities - at a staggering 95%.

Via a year-long training programme & follow on employment programme young adults with learning disabilities have a secure pathway into paid sustainable employment.

There are people making waves everywhere. Waves that uproot the old broken ways and breathe new better ways into being. Walk down Slingsby Place in Covent Garden, central London and there you have activism in action.

This is where Bianca has created her cafe, a place of biodiversity, a rich exchange of different people bringing different qualities to a space that feels calm and cheerful.

The impact Fair Shot is having on people is truly immeasurable. They have had trainees that have started speaking, that have smiled for the first time, that have left their house for the first time since the pandemic started, trainees that have made friends for the first time, gotten their first ever paycheck, worked as part of a team and felt useful for the very first time in their lives.

There is no way to describe the impact other than saying that they are giving their trainees a chance to have everything that they deserve - the basic right to aspire to a career.

What that does to your mental health is limitless.

Thank you so much Bianca for doing so much to create a society where adults with learning disabilities have an equal and fair chance at obtaining and maintaining employment.

When we live by the ethics of People Care, Planet Care & Fair Share, we give ourselves the resilience to create a brighter future.

Harnessing restorative business to heal the world, with author & journalist Esha Chhabra15 May 202300:44:50

Send us a text

Esha Chhabra is a journalist who covers sustainability, development, women's issues & mission-driven brands, writing for The Guardian, The New York Times, Economist, Wired, Fast Company & Forbes & awarded 4 grants from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Esha is also the author of Working to Restore, harnessing the power of ‘feel good, do good’ enterprises & regenerative business, to restore & heal the world.

They are going above and beyond what we call sustainability, which is a term that leaders have become frustrated with. What are we sustaining? This is a broken system. So are we trying to sustain the status quo?

It’s not got us to where we need to be so people were looking for something more effective.

Some forward-looking leaders picked up on the regenerative approach and began to disrupt their own work design approaches and instead embrace this more developmental, restorative eco-system within their organisations.

Esha explains that this approach is about

- restoring the imbalance that’s been created in society, whether it’s social and environmental
- regenerating or breathing new life into old ways that are no longer working
- bringing about a different iteration that works with the greater good for humans and the planet.

When we choose to keep ourselves informed, if we look through the lens of where the solutions are happening then we don’t paralyse ourselves with fear.

Instead we feel hopeful and optimistic and in that state of openness, we are able to be more creative and innovative in our own approaches to the way we live and work within the context of the planet’s living systems.

We can choose to be part of what works for the whole, and play our part within that.

Transform the world about you, with Lebanon-based founder of Recycler Donation, Maria Abdel Karim08 May 202300:28:59

Send us a text

This week's guest is Maria Abdel Karim who is part of Recycler, The Environmental Army, a team of passionate youth working together and creating new sustainable approaches to the waste problem in Lebanon, including recycling waste, doing clean-ups, raising awareness, & using technology & AI for the good of the environment.

Recycler is specialized in solid waste management, environmental education, sustainable innovation and agriculture.

Maria believes that lack of environmental education is making people not take this topic seriously and so therefore they offer quality education to raise the level of awareness among society for a better community.

They work to create a conscious community and achieve the highest waste reduction possible, offering quality education and have clean tech everywhere.

Maria sees success as being:

- a future where there is a letting go of a consumer craving for new
- embracing a ‘waste not want not’ mentality where we get to witness the impact of each and every act we make
- bridging the gap between the environment and humans by taking innovation to another level.

Thanks Maria for your contribution with Recycler and for sharing all the ways that you help both the environment and the people of Lebanon to have a more regenerative and restorative future.

Thanks also for showing us that when we pull together we can be an army working for the fair share and care of people and the planet.

Surefire way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with Marisa Heath, CEO of Plant-Based Alliance UK01 May 202300:35:11

Send us a text

Marisa Heath is the CEO of Plant Based Alliance UK, founded by Oatly, Alpro, The Vegan Society, Upfield and ProVeg UK, as a coalition of civil society groups & businesses with a collective aim of making the UK a global leader in plant-based food & drink.

All these businesses and increasingly more as others join them, have decided to resist the stigma of being different, and stand up together to speak out for what they believe in.

Food systems account for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions globally & plant-based foods are a hugely impactful way of ensuring our food choices are sustainable in the future.

They believe that “A shift towards plant-based will be vital in achieving the Government’s net zero target by 2050”.

Marisa believes it takes courage to

- stand out and be different
- speaking out on the need for change despite the opposition
- for being a leader in reform

Thank you Marisa for giving us a straightforward way to reduce green house emissions by adopting a plant-based diet, either partially or completely, and thereby contribute to helping getting Britain to net zero by 2050.

Thanks also for showing us that making plant-based food choices can positively impact people and the planet, for future generations to come.

Sharing your message, mission & vision, with impact marketing pro Amel Derragui24 Apr 202300:38:43

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Amel Derragui, a marketing consultant who helps change-makers sell their vision, their ideas and their skills in order to make the visible impact they want to see in the world. Many entrepreneurs are intimidated by marketing but she helps demystifiy what it is really about so you can learn how to do it authentically.

If you want to be a thought leader in your industry choose where you are most comfortable and proficient and drill down on that. Think about the change and transformation you want to make and divide them into three pillars or topics that you can talk about. This helps you keep consistency in your messaging. Don’t worry about repetition. Consistency and repetition will make the connection for people.

The more you speak out, in whichever way you can, the more change-makers will come together and join forces. Because let’s be frank, this can be a lonely space when you’re doing it on your own. There is strength in numbers and there are enough of us out here to really gather momentum. No matter what tools we use to disseminate the information, what is most powerful are the relationships we build and the connections we make.

Amel helps us:
- Demystify what marketing is really about and how to do it authentically

- Implement strategies that are aligned with their values and who their are

- Get some tips to rally people around their solution and turn their expertise into visible impact

Thanks Amel for helping us to use marketing as a tool for communicating the impact that we change-makers are trying to have in the world, so that more people get to hear our message, vision and mission, and are encouraged to join forces for the good of people and the planet.

Thanks also for showing us that we can all learn to get our message across and help others know how we can support them.

Compost your knickers with Stripe and Stare Founder Katie Lopes17 Apr 202300:29:12

Send us a text

My guest this week is Katie Lopes, Founder, Creative & Sustainability Director of Stripe and Stare, a B-corp certified brand making super cool and comfy knickers.

Made sustainably in Austria from Beechwood Trees by a company called Lenzing, the Stripe & Stare fabric TENCEL is scientifically proven to be 3 times softer than cotton, wears better & is as breathable as fresh air in a forest of responsibly planted trees.

But she didn’t start out saying, right ‘I’m going to save the planet with compostable knickers’ and hey presto she was doing her thing. No. Sustainability is a journey and we are always working to be the best we can.

Katie and her team were happy that the main body of their knicker was comfy and compostable but there was still the issue of using elastic. Which you obviously need or they will be down around your knees. Their knickers are described by magazines such as The Times and 98% of their customers as the most comfortable they have worn.

But Katie wanted to go the extra mile. And so they are currently aiming to bring biodegradable elastanes into their entire range.  They want to get their knickers onto the bottoms of millions of women. And they want to do it sustainably.

Thanks so much Katie for giving us great pants that when we have enjoyed them, they can be composted down and regenerate the soil for new things to grow.

Thanks also for showing us how we can take part in the circular economy by buying well and bringing a regenerative approach into our lives.

Taking a stand on issues you care about with Art for Change Founder Jeanne Masel10 Apr 202300:25:47

Send us a text

My guest this week is Jeanne Masel Founder & CEO of Art for Change developed to offer fine art to socially conscious art collectors. Each carefully selected artist and artwork are paired with a relevant non-profit initiative & this has generated over $250K for non-profits & enabled the planting of over 3,000 trees to support Global Reforestation efforts to combat climate change.

AFC is a platform for discovery for the best contemporary art. They’ve been known for their high quality prints by top in-demand contemporary artists, and they’ve also started selling unique works and offer art advisory services.

AFC came about because Jeanne Masel's background is in art sales, connoisseurship, and philanthropy. She's on the Board of the Brooklyn Museum and started off consulting with them to create limited-edition contemporary art prints for their 2017 artists’ ball. That experience alone solidified her vision for her company.

In 2018 they started commissioning limited-edition prints by the best contemporary artists paired with urgent non-profit causes. When the pandemic struck in 2020, they pivoted to support artists amidst a world that had shut down. They also found a way to meet the moment for issues like food insecurity that came into high relief during the pandemic. They were able to offer their artists 50% of the proceeds rather than asking for a donation, while also raising funds for really important causes. It was a three-way win: they were able to pay artists, raise money for vital causes, and create a stellar work of art.

Being contentious is what they do at Art for Change. Taking a stand for what they believe in.  They help make the world a better place through their Art for Change Initiatives.

Jeanne believes that when you are afraid of something, face your fear. Lean into it and do it anyway. Listen to those that encourage and support you. Don’t take no for an answer.

Thanks so much Jeanne for finding a way to bring art to socially conscious collectors, support artists and benefit social causes and wider climate change issues, to create a thriving cultural ecosystem.

Thanks also for showing us that it is possible to follow our passion and grow a business whilst helping people and the planet at the same time.

Doing it scared, with Emilia Leese, Author of Think like a Vegan & Founder of The Birchfield Project 03 Apr 202300:33:40

Send us a text

My guest this week is Emilia Leese, author of Think like a Vegan & founder of the Birchfield Project dedicated to rewilding 100 acres in the Highlands of Scotland, near Loch Ness, in which they aim to restore the native forest, peat bog, funga, reintroduce locally extinct species & inspire people to connect with the environment.

Emilia is  the owner, along with her husband, of 100 acres of a former commercial forest which they bought in 2017, after a few years of searching.

They were inspired by Alan Watson Featherstone, founder of Trees For Life, and thought they too could plant some trees to help restore the Caledonian Forest.

Through their friends with whom they later formed Lifescape, they developed the ideas behind the Natural Capital Laboratory project they now collaborate with some incredible people - AECOM, Lifescape Project, University of Cumbria, Rewilding Mycology and Alan Watson Featherstone himself.

From simply wanting to plant trees, they’ve ended up doing something much more ambitious.

Thank you so much Emilia for your commitment to reforesting and restoring the native Calidonian forest and biodiversity of Scotland, to Lifescape and the Natural Capital Laboratory, and to vegan ethics and its huge positive impact for people and the planet.

Thanks also for showing us that when we join forces to bring about change, we can make such a difference to the world we live in.

Waste not, want not with Globechain founder May Al-Karooni21 Mar 202300:33:15

Send us a text

My guest this week is May Al-Karooni, the founder of Globechain an ESG, Environmental, Social, and Governance Reuse Marketplace connecting corporates with charities, small businesses and individuals. They enable companies to reuse materials and assets to help them reduce their waste, carbon and improve their ESG data evidence of sustainability.

After seeing the Bank she was working for dispose of furniture, she decided to get into waste. She founded Globechain to contribute to the re-use revolution, circular economy and ESG marketplace. They help divert a huge amount of waste. Her vision for the future is to encourage other leaders to adopt & drive forward the circular economy and embracing ‘waste not want not’.

Thank you so much May for creating an online marketplace that helps us to be part of the circular economy and be able to hand on items that we no longer have use for, or buy pre-used when we need something that we don’t already have.

Thanks also for showing us how to be more sustainable in the stuff we get rid of or bring into our lives, as individuals or businesses, and help us in our efforts towards climate solutions.

Wonder where your old sneakers went? Celebrating waste as a precious material with Helen Kirkum08 Mar 202300:33:36

Send us a text

My guest this week is Helen Kirkum, multi-award winning designer & pioneer in sustainable footwear whose Studio was born on the fundamentals of rescuing old sneakers to create pieces that raise awareness of post-consumer waste. Wherever possible they incorporate recycling and up-cycling into their products, breathing new life into discarded sneakers.

STUDIO

Helen Kirkum Studio Limited was founded by Helen Kirkum in 2019.

At Helen Kirkum Studio we celebrate the processes of wearing and making in our products. Utilising recycled and dead stock materials, we create bespoke sneakers artistically crafted for an individual experience. We collaborate with brands worldwide to bring our playful perspective and sustainable message to their products. We also love to spread our signature design through making ethos in talks and workshops, promoting the value of spontaneous and tactile creativity.

HELEN

Helen Kirkum is a London-based artist and designer. Kirkum’s artisanship has garnered international acclaim and it is her ability to tell stories through her designs that sets her work apart. Each pair of sneakers she makes is unique, weaving together the memories of the components that make it and allowing the owner to own something inherently personal and one-of-a-kind. She is widely considered a pioneer of the hacked and deconstructed aesthetic within the sneaker industry, and in the vanguard of the sustainable footwear movement.

Kirkum graduated from London’s Royal College of Art in 2016. Through her practice, Kirkum challenges us to rethink the meaning of consumption and the way we interact with the products we own.

She grows cities- how to nurture nature in a concrete jungle, with Jamie Hwang06 Mar 202300:38:51

Send us a text

My guest this week is Jamie Hwang, city planner for Los Angeles City Council and creator of Urban Farmers’ Almanac which is a free, community-sourced digital resource guide for gardening, sustainable living, and supporting urban farms & independent makers in LA who also believe in circular, local economies, building communities, and food justice.

Her passion for urban planning made her realize how precious our environment is. And while in LA, they need to build more housing quickly to address homelessness as the most urgent humanitarian crisis, she believes they can also simultaneously address climate change as well.

For her, true courage is trying ideas out even when you know you may fail. It's hard to begin a journey not knowing if you'll succeed, and it's even hard to start if you know you're likely to fail. But when you take a leap, you learn new things, and those lessons add up to successes in the long run. The trick is to realize you never really "finish" learning.

Jamie shows us that wherever we live we have the opportunity to take sustainable living into our hands and create places where we feel more in tune with the planet.

As a result of my conversation with Jamie, I am now transitioning my allotment to a food forest using permaculture techniques.

The sustainable journey of a babygro, with Sashe Christopher14 Feb 202300:28:15

Send us a text

My guest this week is Sashe Christopher, founder of vegan, organic childrenswear brand Pop My Way that parents can trust. Its sustainable supply chain is fully GOTS-certified, from energy and water use, to hazardous chemicals /use of non-chemical dyes, to the social responsibility and wages the factory workers get paid is monitored and audited regularly.

After working in corporate fashion for over 20 years and having a baby, she soon realised that her time with her family and her health were the most important things.

She used to work long hours and weekends and was always exhausted. Having a baby made her reprioritise and rethink what really matters.

Coming from South Africa, sustainability has always been a way of life for her. Fashion brands at the moment are making claims as a tick box exercise without understanding what it really means to be a sustainable business.

Sashe, however has ensured that Pop My Way has done things correctly since its inception and they have a certification from The Global Organic Textile Standard to prove that their claims are genuine.

Their whole supply chain is monitored and audited regularly so things like farmers rights, water/energy use, prohibition of chemical dyes and pesticides and social aspects are all checked and reported on.

At Pop My Way, Sashe wants to change mindsets around fashion and make people realise that we don’t need as much clothing as we think we do.

Making these changes from the start of a baby’s life will hopefully allow them to carry these lessons with them into the future.

We need to change the culture of fast fashion and throw away clothing and move into a world of fewer quality items that can be mixed and matched and handed down instead of discarded.

Sashe has certainly done that with her babywear- beautiful, soft, hard-wearing, interchangeable and gender-free, they can be handed-down or handed back for Pop My Way’s pre-loved department.

And all with the knowledge that you are buying completely sustainably, right down to the last popper.

Thank you so much Sashe for sharing with us what a fully transparent vegan, organic, sustainable supply chain looks like so that we can be more discerning and knowledgable in the purchases we make.

And than

The powerful benefits of hanging out, with Author Sheila Liming 07 Feb 202300:29:42

Send us a text

My guest this week is Professor Sheila Liming, author of Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time which shows us how just getting together can be a potent act of resistance. Almost every day it seems that our world becomes more fractured, more digital, and more chaotic. But Sheila has the answer: we simply need to hang out more.

The book is called Hanging Out and in it, she explores what it means to kill time socially, in the presence of others, and why doing that matters. It’s styled a manifesto – a defense of what once felt very normal and has now started to feel like a dying practice, especially since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic.

She is reminding people that social relationships take work and that, if they feel like work, that’s okay and potentially good, even. She is arguing for a reclamation of our collective social investments and also for increased awareness about what it is that we produce when  we appear to be “non-productive,” in the traditional or superficial sense of that idea.

Her vision for the future would be one in which social priorities are recognized as priorities. It would be one in which all facets of life – from work to urban planning, to the structuring of public space, to social behaviors and manners – are organized around the expectation of social activity and the need for humans to hang out and relax in each other’s presence. That’s a vision that also hinges on the taking of time; we have to take the time to allow ourselves to be less productive in a strict, material sense and more productive in a social, communally networked sense.

When we are more socially connected we are more likely to feel a commitment to our community, and a sense of responsibility to our wider world. Being locked away in our silos, only encourages a self-centred approach to life. We need a whole and heart-centred connection to others and to the eco-system that sustains us.

Thanks Sheila sharing the simple art of hanging out and the powerfully positive impact it can have in our lives.

Thank you also for showing us that not one size fits all when it comes to the concept of hanging out, but that we can all find ways to connect that suit our individual personalities.

Going cruelty-free with sustainable plant-based leathers with Luxtra founder Jessica Kruger17 Jan 202300:31:07

Send us a text

My guest this week is Jessica Kruger, Founder of Luxtra, a conscious, cruelty free, & sustainability -focused luxury brand of plant-based leather accessories. In 2020 Luxtra certified as a B-corporation- a new type of company that balances purpose with profit, using business as a force for good.

There's no denying fashion is a super-saturated market, so competition is fierce. Like in almost any industry - Luxtra are a small player trying to compete with businesses that have deep pockets and heritage brand names.

Jessica grew up in Australia and moved out of home when she was 20, moving from Sydney to Paris. She had dreamed, since she was 10 years old, about living in Paris, so she leapt at the opportunity when it came up in university. Later she moved to London to start a meat-free restaurant called Ethos . It opened in 2014.

Ever since, her life has been about trying to create businesses that help people adopt more plant-based / cruelty-free lifestyles. Her biggest goal is to make an impact in terms of animal welfare. The way she is doing this is by creating non-leather products that are beautiful and desirable, so that more people will feel inclined to make more cruelty-free choices in their lives.

She has recently gained B-Corp certification for her brand and she explains what that entails and why it is the stamp of approval for sustainability in business.

Thanks so much Jessica for bringing us beautiful non-leather luxury accessories so that we can start to make changes in our fashion consumption towards the health and well-being of animals, people and the planet.

Thanks also for showing us that we can make good choices when it comes to animal welfare and that we can have accessories that are conscious, cruelty-free & sustainability-focused.

Saving the animals from our fashion choices with SLAY documentary film director Rebecca Cappelli10 Jan 202300:37:20

Send us a text

My guest this week is Rebecca Cappelli is an award-winning filmmaker & public speaker. A French citizen and a mandarin speaking professional, Rebecca leads the non-profit project Let us be Heroes for the health of people, animals & the planet. She is the director of SLAY, a feature documentary about inhumane practices involving animals in the fashion industry.

Rebecca went to China alone at 18 years old to study Chinese mandarin, then had to graduate in France because Chinese unis were not recognised internationally, then she moved back to China at 25. Her China dog is rescued from dog meat and he made her  think more of how we treat animals, then in 2015 she had a spontaneous awakening

She decided to turn to filmmaking to reach more people in 2018 (Let us be Heroes) and started to make SLAY early 2019. Her mission is to expose evil, and help people reconnect with their emotional intelligence through the power of cinematic communication.

97% of fashion students surveyed after watching SLAY declare not wanting to use any animal skins in their careers (that was 37% before watching)

Thanks so much Rebecca for the powerful work you do in raising awareness around animal welfare in the fashion industry and for creating a film that holds up a mirror to any of us who still buy clothes and accessories that contain animal skins.

Thanks also for showing us how to open our eyes and make different choices for the benefit of the world we live in & for those sentient creatures we share the planet with.

It's an inside job with love and relationships expert Sami Wunder03 Jan 202300:39:46

Send us a text

My guest this week is Sami Wunder, a leading international relationship and dating expert who specializes in working with ambitious, high-achieving women, helping them attract lasting romantic love. Her clients range from a Hollywood celebrity to UK TV stars to CEOs, bankers, lawyers, doctors, renowned authors, leading entrepreneurs, and more.

The world of love and relationships changed and Sami is helping people navigate the new ways of meeting, dating, forming and transforming their relationships.

As a child she grew up in a household with parents who had a very dysfunctional relationship. It made her determined that when she grew up she would learn to have a happy and healthy one.

Extremely academic she went on to do a Masters in Germany with a full scholarship. It was then that she realised that she too was experiencing unsatisfactory relationships. So with her analytical brain she set out to discover the theory and practice of what makes relationships work well.

What she discovered was that it starts with self-love. Until we can meet our own needs we will be seeking it from our significant other and we will drive them away.

Sami then developed a whole process that woman can work through to release and celebrate their feminine energy, go out with multiple men in rotational dating (which doesn't mean multiple concurrent sex) until you really get to know them and their values, their imperfections and how they are with you over time. Only then do you whittle down to the man that you want to explore life with for the longterm.

Sami's programme works for ambitious women, either single or in relationships that need improving.

Thanks so much Sami for your refreshing approach to helping people find love and build lasting relationships in the modern world.

Thanks also for showing us that no matter where we are in the dating or relationship game, we can always find a way to create love in our lives

Sami has offered you a gift: ‘Lean In At Work, Lean Back In Love - High Achieving Women's Secrets To Romantic Success.'
1) Training on feminine energy practices for high-achieving women who want to have romantic
success with men.
2) Plus - a pdf with our top 10 scripts to get men to meet your needs.

Send us a text

My Guest this week is Shaa Wasmund MBE. She’s just brought out the 10th anniversary edition of her #1 bestselling book Stop Talking Start Doing in which she does a deep dive teach into what holds people back, the fears, the false beliefs, the unhealthy habits, the procrastination and sabotage all that can stop budding entrepreneurs from getting started and established entrepreneurs from soaring to the top level.

First time round the book had a record-breaking 14 months at No 1 in the charts and now this updated edition has gone straight in at number 3 in the charts and is WH Smith’s Book of the Month.

Shaa is an entrepreneur, public speaker and the author of three #1 bestselling books. Awarded an MBE from the Queen for ‘Services to Business and Entrepreneurship’ she’s also named one of the UK’s Top 20 Influential Entrepreneurs by The Sunday Times.

She became the first licensed female boxing manager at the age of 21, you started your own PR agency and helped build Dyson from Sir James Dyson’s kitchen table, you built  SMARTA helping 12 million people into business and grew an active online community of over 500,000 small businesses.

“Doing” comes naturally to Shaa as a result of the Post Traumatic Growth Syndrome she experienced from childhood to the age of 30. However what she has learned through her work with up and coming business owners, she has evolved and developed into the techniques she shares in her book so that others' are able to build confidence through the momentum of doing.

Thanks so much Shaa for sharing with us the power of taking action over just dreaming and talking. I encourage all my listeners to pick up a copy of Shaa’s book and just like it says on the tin:  Stop Talking, Start Doing.

Scoring at life with football TV presenter Alison Bender22 Nov 202200:35:49

Send us a text

This week's guest is Alison Bender, a football reporter and TV presenter. When she was ten years old she knew she wanted to be a presenter but her teachers told her it was a terrible idea.  Fast forward to now and she’s living her dream, travelling the world interviewing some of the greatest footballers and managers of our generation.

England Women winning the Euros has helped put women’s football on the map. And women in sports media is on the rise too. Alison feels there is still a lot of work to do but we are moving in the right direction.

As a little girl she said she wanted to be a presenter but that dream was poo pooed. She was also growing up in a household where her mum was an alcoholic, so how did that shy little girl find her way? She would see opportunities and then put herself in front of them.

She made her way into TV, but after working on scripts for the presenters she knew it was the presenting that she wanted to do. She said her first screen tests were terrible, but she learned what she needed to do, kept trying and eventually landed a gig.

Covid put the Kibosh on live sport. And then last November she discovered she had breast cancer. Both these life hits, made her sit back and reassess. She realised she need to have something that wasn't reliant on her time.

So she created a course helping young people learn the ropes of TV presenting. Now she is able to support the next generation of female sports presenters come up through the ranks, at the same as leading the way on our screens.

Thanks so much Alison for sharing behind the scenes of the footballing and TV world and for helping give similar possibilities to young people who want to follow in your footsteps.

Thank you also for showing us that it is possible to have big dreams and by putting the right steps in place you can work towards achieving them.

Healing with Horses - equine facilitated therapy with Loredana Caminiti15 Nov 202200:35:35

Send us a text

My guest this week is Loredana Caminiti founder of Be Horself a Horse Assisted Wellbeing organisation that practices the innovative experiential learning method of Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL), so that you can safely interact with horses, from the ground, and be gently guided by their intuition to unlock the blocks holding you back.

Loredana had an idyllic childhood in the mountains, living close with nature. Even though her family then moved to the city for her to go school she kept her memories of the mountains and her love of the wild.

She had an adventurous spirit and as a young woman headed off to New York, working jobs that she had to, but also making the most out of life.

But her former husband got ill and that stopped her in her tracks. Nursing him back to health made her realise there was more to life than working hard and playing hard.

So she went off and trained in Equine Facilitated learning and when she moved to the countryside outside London she founded the wellbeing centre at her farm and created Be Horself. She also runs retreats with emotional well-being coach Sandra Wright (interviewed last week)

Thank you Loredana for the powerful work you and your horses do in helping people overcome their fears and embrace the true essence of who they are. Thanks also for showing us that when we open up to nature and to other sentient beings that we also open up to ourselves.

From burnout to bravery to break-through with Sandra Wright08 Nov 202200:33:44

Send us a text

My guest this week is Sandra Wright who went from extreme adrenal burnout to re-calibrating her life and becoming a bravery coach to encourage stressed-out individuals, juggling busy careers, teams and personal lives to balance emotional wellbeing, in order to communicate successfully and find fulfilment from within.

The last few years, helped by the pandemic, have seen Sandra herself, releasing toxic relationships, addiction, and expectation, but also accessing the true creative inside her; the artist, the free spirit and more gentle and kinder soul, that she had lost along the way.

As a child, despite a broken home, she'd always been sporty, academic, content and outgoing. And growing up and heading out into the world, she went straight from school into retail management, cheeky, likeable, memorable, with escapism as the driver. She was adventurous and an adrenaline junkie.

But her fast living came with set-backs. A serious car crash on the motorway, a head injury sustained at work, unhealthy relationships, and eventually she was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. She had to learn to slow down.

She went on a retreat to train as an emotional well being coach and realised she needed to learn to look after herself too.

Her purpose became to support others to be happy, with themselves, their decisions and the environment and systems that they operate within. When they have lost faith she held hope for them that there are options. She shone the light to help them find themselves.

She appeared to go through the next evolution every 7 years to find her true north, and each 7 years the vision of who she is becomes becomes clearer.

Now, with her business partner Loredana Caminiti (interviewed for next week's episode) they run barn retreats with horses using the equine assisted learning method, and Sandra bring her emotional bravery coaching into the mix by helping people connect with nature.

Thanks so much Sandra for sharing how we can be Brave To Break Free from what’s not working for us and learn to live more balanced lives. Thanks also for showing the power of nature to lead us back to ourselves and our own true nature.

If ever there was a time for a hug in a mug, it's now. Let's have a cuppa with HotTea Mama founder Bethan Thomas01 Nov 202200:31:51

Send us a text

My guest this week is Bethan Thomas a Tea Scientist & the first non-Chinese person to get a degree in Tea Science from the University in Fujian, China. She worked as a tea buyer for some of the UK's biggest tea brands before co-founding HotTea Mama an award-winning tea company, making teas to support better periods, pregnancy, motherhood & menopause, from gut health to hormonal balance.

Bethan's business survived and thrived through the pandemic, post-pandemic and now with cost-of living crisis because tea is an affordable comfort for people.

Even though her teas are on the more expensive end, they are herbal and have some medicinal properties so you could say they are a more affordable than food based supplements, though comparable in what they offer.

Hot Tea Mama came about because of  the problems women face at different stages of life in terms of gut health and hormonal balance.

With Bethan's tea science background she was able to create the right blends of tea to suits different women's health issues.

Thanks so much Bethan for creating a hug in a mug that puts women’s wellness and health at the heart of the teas you create. As a post-menopausal woman I certainly enjoy the tea that you created for the likes of me.

Thanks also for showing us how we can take our passion and turn it into a purposeful pursuit for the good of others.

Artfully making the world a better place with artist agency founder Kristina Snyder24 Oct 202200:34:31

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Kristina Synder founder of an agency based in New York that represents a dynamic and diverse range of illustrators, animators, designers and visual artists from around the world. She is committed to empowering her clients and artists to forge conscientious and creative collaborations.

She found that the during and since the pandemic the interest of brands to use illustration and animation has increased, and that the collaborations between commercial business and creatives have also been on the rise too.

Kristina was always artistic herself but it wasn't encouraged particularly, so it was only when she got older and got her hands on a camera that she started to make creative photographic work. She ended up travelling extensively and eventually it took her to New York.

With no money or connections, she found herself in the artistic world. She met her husband who was a musician and they lived and breathed with the creative community around them.

Kristina started a photographic agency but over time that evolved into  the international art agency she heads up today.

She sees the huge possibility in artists using their creativity to positively impact the world and as an entrepreneur and supporter of her artists, she actively encourages and facilitates that.

Thanks so much Kristina for leading us on a journey through the lives of creative and artistic people and how they can have a positive impact in the world. Thank you also for for showing us that following our gut, growing organically and celebrating our creativity will lead us to living fully expressed lives that bring us fulfillment and purpose.

Transforming pain into purpose with Green Queen founder Sonalie Figueiras17 Oct 202200:37:19

Send us a text

This week’s guest is serial social entrepreneur Sonalie Figueiras. She is the founder & editor-in-chief of Green Queen, an award-winning impact media platform advocating for social & environmental change in Hong Kong with a mission to shift consumer behaviour through inspiring & empowering original content.

Sonalie paints a picture of what the climate crisis consciousness in Hong Kong and Asia as a whole and what she is trying to do with her Green Queen Media Platform.

There were definitely some clues in her childhood to the woman she became – not least in being bullied for being different, but more importantly how she used a natural journalistic flair to create magazines to entertain and educate her peers, from a young age.

Then her health journey took her down a long and frustrating path in which she experienced medical misogyny and a series of no answers. That was until she decided to take her own health and well-being into her own hands.

Out of the ashes of all those seemingly wasted years she created her life around health, well-being & green living.

And this led to wanting to help others in the same way. And so her attention focussed on Green Queen magazine/media platform, Sustainable packaging and Climate Tech.

She talks about giving people choices, ideas, stories and information to live a healthier, greener, kinder life.

And if she could rip up the system and start again she would focus on circularity, degrowth, indigenous learnings, biophilia, regenerative systems, celebration of difference and matriarchy.

Thanks so much Sonalie, for creating a media platform that encourages debate on the topics around climate change and green solutions.

Thanks also for showing us how we can rise up from our own personal set-backs and channel our phoenix-like energy into something bigger than ourselves.

There is virtually no symptom or disease that is not touched by insulin resistance, and it’s estimated that 88% of the country might have it.

Growing up Lauren undertook a career in finance (healthcare private equity) and then earned a scholarship to go to medical school. Seeing the way medicine is taught and practiced during her clinical training in medical school — she believed the entire system is broken and most of the way medicine is practiced doesn't make sense.

At the same time her own health was plummeting

She became very passionate about improving people's health and changing the U.S. healthcare system and got into Health Tech.

Rather than being a victim of the healthcare system, she decided to try to change it and to help people gain power over their own health rather than relying on the broken system; she founded a digital health startup focused on digestive disease.

She then went on to work for Levels who have built their technology to help people close the loop on their dietary and lifestyle choices with real-time data. They are looking to establish themselves as the thought leaders in metabolic health and pioneers of "biosensors" (consumer wearables that track deeper and more meaningful metrics).

Thanks so much Dr Lauren for sharing how Levels is helping people track their own health so that they can hold themselves accountable to the changes they want to make.

What would the world look like if women had true financial independence?

If you’d like to know more about how we can create a more equal and prosperous future for everyone, listen to my guest this week Ayesha Ofori, founder & CEO of Propelle UK’s first financial education and investment platform designed to empower women to take control of their finances, and make the world a better place by closing the gender wealth gap.

Ayesha was shortlisted for the Bold Woman Awards by Veuve Cliquot, that celebrate women who are innovative, leading, and challenging the status quo – her nomination for the Bold Future Award is a well-deserved reflection of the work she’s doing to help women build financial independence.

Ayesha shares her belief that women deserve better and explains how Propelle is giving them more access, more education, more confidence, and more wealth.

Celebrating your Neurodiversity with ADHD Ambassador Azryah Harvey03 Oct 202200:35:15

Send us a text

Azryah Harvey is an anti-racism consultant, public speaker, writer, and content creator. She was diagnosed with ADHD aged 30 after suspecting she was living with the condition for a few years. While apprehensive about securing the diagnosis, Azryah felt validated when she received an ADHD diagnosis as it explained many of the challenges she had been experiencing.  Up to 75% of women living with ADHD are undiagnosed in the UK alone.

Azryah is an ADHD Ambassador for Staring Back at you Campaign by Takeda UK. She feels very strongly about ADHD and special educational needs in general - she was a teacher and pastoral lead in an SEN school for years - and she feels there is a very delicate balance between acknowledging your needs and advocating for yourself so you are accommodated correctly and also recognising that a portion of our issues is not that we have a disability, but more that the world is often a very rigid and discriminatory place.

Having ADHD can be very challenging, but not knowing you have it compounds everything! Creating that awareness and alerting people to the signs, she believes, will change lives. And as a woman we are socialised in a way that tells us to prioritise the needs of others. This campaign encourages women and non-binary people to prioritise themselves!

Azryah believes that we must find the strength to reject those ideals and acknowledge that there is nothing ‘wrong’ with us, but that the world does not account for or embrace difference and diversity the way it should.

The anti-racism work she does in schools consists of training, policy work, curriculum work and pupil workshops.  They work with the entire school body to assess what areas the school need support in and use a holistic approach to increase racial literacy. The company is run predominantly by black women, so we use that sense that advocate for black and other ethnic minority groups and aim to improve the well being and quality of teaching for all children.

Thanks Azryah for sharing your journey to ADHD diagnosis and how you are helping schools to embrace diversity in all its forms. Thanks also for showing us how our difference can be our superpower

Loud & Proud- getting your voice on the airwaves with The Podcast Boutique founder Lynsay Gould26 Sep 202200:35:53

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lynsay Gould founder and CEO of The Podcast Boutique, a podcast production company that champions indie podcasters and helps get more women’s voices heard through podcasting. She also started the Podcasting for Business Awards and most recently the podcast network We Are Emmeline.

It's been a tough few years for everyone. Typically for her though, she doubled down in her work as podcasting seemed to explode during the first lockdown. She’s realised even more than before how important freedom is in her life and work.

From a working class family, happy home, they had all they needed but not all they wanted. Her parents believed in her and she grew up hearing ' you can have anything or be anything you want if you work hard enough'. Always very entrepreneurial - full of ideas to make money and start mini businesses.

She left home for university before her mum got sick with Cancer so returned home to look after her. She passed away 2 weeks before she found out she was pregnant with her eldest daughter.

She fell into HR and was there for 20 years - wanted to help people but got disheartened by the job when it became more like a PR job and reputation management for the company she worked for.

Finding a lump in her throat that was suspected to be something sinister (believing that she'd lose her voice) she decided to start her podcast agency which is about helping women to use their voices and speak up and use their voices to be heard. Only 11% of top podcasts by women and she wants to change that.

Lynsay knows what she is working towards. Equality for women. No gender pay gap. More women in podcasting in front and behind the mic. It's why she started Emmeline podcast network.

She believes that using your voice no matter what, even when it feels like things are stacked against you. One voice can make a difference and create a ripple effect that can create change.

Thanks Lynsay for giving so many more woman a platform for speaking out in the world, and wishing you well with the Emmeline Network.

And thank you for showing us that when we use our voice to share our message, we can have a much greater influence in the world.

You can find out more about Lynsay’s work on https://www.thepodcastboutique.com/ and follow her on

Putting the Va Va Vroom back into your v@ginal health with Kim Vopni19 Sep 202200:38:07

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Kim Vopni, vagina coach, pelvic floor specialist and author of Your Pelvic Floor, a practical guide to solving your most intimate problems. She believes it's time for pelvic health to be discussed & offered to all vagina owners & that it's time to break through taboos & redefine how we think about women’s health.

It took her awhile to figure out what she wanted to do...and then once she was in her career, she was laid off after 9 years.  Thankfully she had started a little side gig that has been her main thing for over 13 years now.

Her 40's were a challenge...  perimenopause!  She had never heard of perimenopause at the time and was lost.  She herself had Rectocele & Uterine Prolapse. Having always been a healthy thriving person, to be sidelined by crazy symptoms was frustrating.  Ultimately it led her to great opportunities to learn, improve her own health and be able to help others.

She was already living her purpose but it added fuel to her fire surrounding the lack of awareness and education on women's health.

She offers online programs and coaching to help women prevent and overcome pelvic floor challenges.  There is so much suffering associated with pelvic health and so many people living less than their best life.  She is not interested in suffering and wants to ensure others know they don't have to.

She believes courage is standing up for your beliefs knowing you may be met with resistance but doing it anyway.

Thanks Kim for opening up the dialogue for vaginal health and making it normal to talk about so that we can get help to address any issues we have.

Thank you also for showing us how not to give up on our vagina’s when they have seemingly given up on us.

Escaping gravity- the final frontier for saving our planet, with former deputy administrator of Nasa, Lori Garver12 Sep 202200:32:18

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lori Garver, former Deputy Administrator for NASA & author of Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age, describing how she drove the commercial space program with Elon Musk against the wishes of Senators on both sides of the House, whilst in a misogynistic, male-dominated NASA culture.

The last two years have been challenging for us all. Lori increased her activist nature as much as possible to help drive to a better future. One of the ways she did this, was write a memoir that uses her career at NASA to help light a path to a better future for us all.

As she outlines in the book, when she left home and went to college, she started to consider how she could best impact the world. She worked for John Glenn on his Presidential Campaign, which is what got her into space.

The Challenger and Columbia accidents were both pain-points that showed her that human spaceflight had gotten off-track. The government led system was rewarding contractors and congress more interested in their own agenda, than true progress.

Out of these literal ashes, she helped craft NASA policies and programs to reduce the cost of space transportation and make utilizing space for broad and valuable purposes more accessible.

As a woman who has reached the one of highest echelons of NASA, being a role model to others is an important aspect of her later career. She began a Fellowship for collegiate women and gender minorities, which now offers 50 paid summer internships annually - with over 200 alumni currently.

Two years ago, they expanded this to include another Fellowship to give even more opportunities Black college students. She’s also started a program called Earthrise Alliance, which is dedicated to fully utilizing satellite data to address climate change.

We went to space over 50 years ago, and the most important thing we learned is about our home planet, Earth. What we have learned about our changing climate from space, has allowed us to understand what is happening and how to adopt ways to adapt and reverse the damage from humanity's dependence on greenhouse gas emissions.

Thank you so much Lori for giving us a bird’s eye view on the world and showing us how continued space exploration will give invaluable insights into how to protect our planet, and give us a future w

The Future of Food with Sentient Ventures Co-Founder, Alexandra Clark05 Sep 202200:43:54

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Alexandra Clark, venture investor & co-founder of Sentient Ventures which was recently launched as new £30m investment vehicle today designed to spur growth in firms developing meat-free animal alternative products. The fund taps into firms fuelling the shift to net zero and removing animals from every stage of the supply chain.

The Pandemic has simply brought front and centre the dire state of the planet and our food system and supply change and made change more pertinent but also easier to communicate. On a personal level, Alexandra had just moved back in with her mum to have a baby before lockdown so it turned out to be a very special and bonding experience on many levels.

Alexandra's mother is from a large farming family so that shaped her upbringing. She had never liked meat as an infant, and her mum says she would spit it out, and at around five she fully understood it was dead animals and never ate it again.

When she left home she travelled a lot, and loved India and its holy towns where it’s illegal to eat meat. That blew her mind. She wanted to understand the world and all the wonderful and diverse cultures we share this planet with. She settled in Brussels and lived there for 11 years.

Becoming a single mother, she needed to be closer to family so quit her job, and her life in Brussels, and moved back to the UK to have a baby just before lockdown.

She had been working in policy in Brussels to encourage a shift to a more plant-based diet, but when she moved back to the UK she got involved in start-ups and Venture Capital and co-founded Sentient Ventures to fund companies developing superior foods to enable more people to stop eating animals without having to give up the enjoyment of animal products.

The fund helps companies'  ability to scale, and have access to retail channels, with alternatives to animal products. The co-benefits of eating fewer animal products impact health and sustainability is on both an individual and societal level.

Animal agriculture drives climate change, biodiversity loss and species extinction, the spread of foodborne and zoonotic diseases, and contributes to the prevalence of non-communicable diseases that are the leading cause of illness and early death in the developed world.

Thanks so much Alexandra for investing in companies who

Ungluing where you're stuck, with the Collage Coaching Technique Founder Andrea Watts08 Aug 202200:38:06

Send us a text

Andrea Watts is the author of Collage as a Creative Coaching Tool and creator of The Collage Coaching Technique™ an arts-based approach to coaching that reconnects you to your inner wisdom and is a powerful way to get unstuck as you explore and express the hidden experiences and mindsets that influence how you feel, think, and behave.

From a work perspective, Covid meant she had to take her coaching practice and training online, this caused her to find a creative way to transition the Collage Coaching Technique online.

It's not surprising she ended up with a creative business. She was a child who enjoyed making things and playing a lot. She was always very curious and wanted to know how things worked. She’s one of 4 children, and the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica. She was brought up in a Christian home and her faith and spirituality remain important to her.

Motherhood was her biggest adventure in her early adulthood. Teaching and learning from her daughter, playing and being creative with her. She loved it. She stayed at home with her for 2 years before getting employment.

Her last paid job was where she experienced the biggest challenge, because she was becoming more aware of what she found fulfilling. Being unable to do this affected her wellbeing and identity, so she went to see a careers coach.

Following working with the coach she decided to start her own business, which evolved into coaching with collage. She’s developed this into a 3-stage technique names the Collage Coaching Technique. It's very different from vision barding. Instead of being future focused it looks at where you are stuck now and helping you transition to a better state of wellbeing.

Her vision is to see it being used as a creative coaching tool for releasing people’s potential globally. Her coaching practice positively impacts her clients and helps to create the changes they want to see. She trains other coaches so am making an impact by introducing a new tool to the coaching profession. While not intentionally, she’s aware that her work inspires others and encourages them to use creative approaches in coaching.

Thanks so much Andrea for sharing this creative collage technique that anyone can use to gain real insights into where they’re stuck and what they really want from life. Thanks also for showing us how to use fo

Smashing it! The art of getting what you want with Alison Edgar MBE01 Aug 202200:35:59

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Alison Edgar MBE known as the ‘The Entrepreneurs Godmother’ helping businesses and entrepreneurs to grow, including The Apprentice & Dragons Den winners with their businesses. She is also the author of bestselling book SMASH IT! The art of getting what you want.

Instead of sitting around during the pandemic, she decided to embrace the lockdown and write her best-selling book ‘SMASH IT! The Art of Getting What YOU Want’, which helped grow the her own business to new levels!

Leaving home at 19, she had a plan to travel the world for 6 months. She loved travelling so much that she moved to Cape town at 21 and before she knew it 6 months had turned into 6 years.

Having her two sons was a game changer for her. Her first birth was very traumatic, and she nearly lost her life. Thankfully, after three months she got better and was discharged from hospital. This made her rethink the direction of her life and made her crave a change.

Leaving her corporate job – and her comfort zone - at 46 years old, she decided it was time for a new direction. She set up her first business ‘Sales Coaching Solutions’ and gave it her all. She realised that she had a passion for helping businesses and entrepreneurs to grow so a few years after this she set up ‘The Entrepreneurs Godmother’ and helped many people including The Apprentice & Dragons Den winners with their businesses.

Fast forward to 2022 and she runs two businesses, ‘SMASH IT! Training’ and ‘Alison Edgar MBE – Keynote Speaker’. Both businesses are designed to help others in different aspects of their lives. SMASH IT! Training helps teams to flourish with contemporary training and coaching. We offer commination training, leadership training, sales training and much more.  Alison Edgar MBE - Keynote Speaker offers motivational speaking at events to help inspire and invigorate audiences of teams or entrepreneurs.

She defines courage as the ability to not be afraid to fail. So many people fear change due to the risk of failing, but in reality, it is our only constant. Change is the only thing that we can guarantee will happen to us throughout our lives, so why live in fear of it? Not fearing change and learning to embrace it is one of the most courageous things that you can do.

Thanks Alison for inspiring entrepreneurs and business owners to get the

Optimizing your brain with Founder Portia Asli25 Jul 202200:35:08

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Portia Asli, a licensed engineer and founder of Optimyzed Brain. She helps entrepreneurs optimize their brains for high-performance using a science-based method that supports people to prioritize their brain health and empower them with actionable ways to increase their mental performance for success in business.

Founding Optimyzed Brain Portia  went from a small offline consulting practice to building and launching a global-based business during the pandemic, helping company leaders optimize their brain health for peak mental performance, engineering a step-by-step science-based system that improves sleep, energy levels, concentration, focus, and mental clarity, less work hours and more more quality time.

Portia emigrated at the age of 10 with her family from Iran to Canada. Hard-working immigrant parents role modelled strong work ethics in her  but also being a woman immigrant in North America provided the freedom that didn't exist in Iran and this was the motivation to seize the opportunity to travel, explore and discover how she could create a positive global impact

She went to a top University and worked hard but burn out and depression during her rigorous engineering studies began a 15-year journey of studying how our lifestyle and behaviour impacts our brain performance.

Now she helps driven senior leaders to achieve great heights by helping them optimize their brains for peak mental performance through science-based micro behavioural and lifestyle improvements.

When striving for success brain health & mental performance can take the back seat.  This can show up as stress, anxiety, overwhelm, brain fog, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, insomnia, procrastination, and low self-confidence. She is helping senior leaders improve their sleep, and nutrition, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance mental clarity and focus in less than five weeks.

Thanks Portia for sharing how you have developed ways to help people to optimise their own natural abilities so that they can be their most effective, productive and happy. And also for showing us that we can find ways to optimise our brain so we aren’t running on empty but instead, living and working in a balanced and fruitful way.

Combating taboo subjects in women's health with founder Lina Chan18 Jul 202200:31:07

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lina Chan. She had a stillbirth, a miscarriage & trouble conceiving. The impact it had on her physically and emotionally was tremendous, so she founded Parla, a Femtech Start-Up platform & community by women for women that changes the conversation around fertility. Parla was recently acquired by Holland & Barrett.

Born and raised in Brazil, by Chinese Immigrant parents Lina learned about resilience, hard work and optimism by watching how they thrived through their hardship. She loved to travel,  exploring new cultures, being outdoors & active. She got her education and worked hard through her career.

Then came her baby loss when she was 6 months pregnant. It was devastating, not least because there was no where to turn to, no one she could find to talk to who understood her pain. No community, no women's heath care support.

Lina's experience informed her next moves. She would create a platform that would provide the support, expertise, and community that she had found missing.

Her mission was to build a better health and wellbeing journey for women around the world.  Her company Parla was born.

So much of women's health is shrouded in taboo which means women systematically have poorer health and wellbeing outcomes.  There is so much we can do to close this gap and it is Lina's determination to do just that.

Now with two daughters she is even more motivated to created a better future for women and their healthcare. She wants them to grow up in a world that they don't have to be ashamed about their periods, infertility, miscarriage or menopause.

She sees courage as believing that you can do hard things!  Trusting yourself and reducing the self-critical voice that can be ever present.  Knowing that even if things don't go your way, you'll learn from it, you'll become stronger and more resilient!

Thank you so much Lina for sharing your journey of infertility & loss, and for making other women feel less alone, and helping them to see that from difficult situations you can find strength and purpose.

And thanks too for showing us that when we are empowered to have access to care & understanding of our bodies we can demand the help we need & we can create a world where there is better healthcare for women, at every stage of life.

Creating a fab future beyond the booze with Radio 2 DJ & Sober Club founder Janey Lee Grace11 Jul 202200:43:25

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Janey Lee Grace, bestselling author of Happy Healthy Sober and the Imperfectly Natural series. Formerly a singer and now DJ on Radio 2, Janey is founder of The Sober Club and is a coach and media trainer for those wanting to find clarity and vision and then looking to package it & send it out into the world in a way that will make people listen.

Born in Nottingham, Janey knew she wanted out of the kind of life that was expected for her. She knew she wanted to a singer and as soon as she could she launched into doing nightclubs and singing for a covers band. Her ambitions were higher than that and soon she was working as a backing singer and eventually with a quick turnaround formed a vocal set and got the gig working for Wham!

It was a work hard play hard culture but not so much for Janey. She didn't have the family back-up to let herself lose control and that kept her from doing drugs. However she was still searching for something else and she went down the road of exploring every alternative health option there was out there. Anything but give up the booze. Which characteristically wasn't out of control. It was what was considered 'normal'.

But normal kept not feeling good. And in January 2018 Janey took the plunge and went sober. What she discovered what that once you'd got  through the adjustments, life was a whole lot more fabulous.

She was inspired to help others on their sober journeys and founded The Sober Club. Having a community is vital in navigating a world which heavily revolves around alcohol. But with Janey's help and the community support more people are able to take those courageous steps.

Thanks so much Janey for encouraging and supporting people wherever they are on their sober curious or sober committed journey, and for showing how important and exciting it is to be part of a community who are all headed on a similar path.

And thanks too for showing us that if we choose to go sober, that we don’t have to go it alone.

How to come to terms with loss with Grief Recovery Specialist Kirsten Wallentin04 Jul 202200:42:10

Send us a text

This week's guest is Kirsten Wallentin, a certified Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist and author of the book “When Dad Dies”. In 2016 her husband was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease for which life expectancy is 2-3 years. Her husband passed away only 18 months later leaving Kirsten a widow with two young daughters.

In the beginning, her children were frightened as they heard people would die from Covid – and after losing their father, they were worried if she could get sick and die as well. As a family they chose to come & live in UK. It has given them chance to face their grief more fully.

Kirsten had a calm, happy childhood with lots of friends, and felt very carefree and self-reliant. Growing up she traveled, spent a time in advertising before becoming an IT consultant.

In 2016 her husband was diagnosed with MND. They way it showed up for him was more internal so the doctors, Kirsten and the girls weren't aware how bad things were getting for him. After 18 months he died suddenly, leaving his family feeling cheated and grieving their  terrible loss.

Kirsten had struggled to find help and advice from those who were going through the same as her so she decided to write a book and become a grief recovery specialist. Helping others , as well as herself and her girls, has given her a sense of meaning purpose.

Thank you so much Kirsten for the courage you have shown in taking your own experience of grief and turning that into a way of helping children and parents going through grief and into recovery. Thanks also for showing us that when those times of grief come to us, there are ways to help us into recovery and beyond.

Mending your mind & body with Mindful Pilates teacher Bev Densham27 Jun 202200:35:58

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Beverley Densham, a Mindfulness Pilates teacher of nearly 24 years, award winning, bestselling Author of I Talk to Angels, founder of the Happy Kids Cards for children & Happy & Calm cards & has been featured in the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Express, YOU Magazine, Woman Magazine, Spirit & Destiny magazine & BBC radio

Beverley's story has led her doing what she does now and it is all the more powerful for the journey that has taken her here.

During the Pandemic she lost her brother Rich when he died suddenly one night. Grief is tough at the best of times but the pandemic made it even harder. They had been very close as children but Rich suffered with Bipolar Disorder and the fallout from that was that Bev had to keep her distance somewhat, so they had grown apart over time.

But as children with their two other siblings it had been a pretty idyllic, happy, simple life. However despite that Bev found it very hard to communicate, and that only got more difficult, as she grew older and went off to University.

After that though she seemed to get into her stride, as a free spirit travelling and learning Pilates on the beach in Sydney. But her happiness was short-lived. One day while cycling to work she was smashed into by a car and thrown to the tarmac.

Her physical injuries were bad and the pain was intense but it was the emotional trauma that overshadowed her as she tried to heal.

She suffered suffered post traumatic stress, panic attacks, depression and chronic fatigue. But after a few unsuccessful attempts at therapy she found someone who helped forgive the woman who had crashed into her, and that put her on the road to recovery.

That was when she started her mindful pilates practice, helping people be strong in mind, body and business, and ultimately to be happy and have the tools to empower them everyday.

She believes that courage is an inner determination, a light shining within that you can’t blow out and will help you through anything no matter what.

Thanks so much Beverley for sharing how you have overcome adversity and created a toolbox for people that they can use as a daily practice to face the challenges of life and embrace the blessings. Thanks also for showing us that by using our bodies, minds and spirituality we can live full lives in each moment n

Not everything is rainbows & unicorns, says The Brain Lady Julie Anderson20 Jun 202200:38:31

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Julie Anderson, otherwise known as The Brain Lady. She has studied natural health, psychology, psychoneuro-immunology & the field of brain personality connection. With further specialism in depression, anxiety disorders and brain function, she helps us to discover our own personal brainprint, & how to make the most of it.

Julie explains what a brainprint is, and how, after the two years we have all had we can use our brains to help us recover and build resilience for whatever is ahead.

Julie was the middle girl of 5 daughters with an alcoholic abusive father was jailed for manufacturing meth-amphetamine, but she was always a positive child and understood that his problem was his problem and not hers.

However she had a car accident at the age of 18 and the chiropractor who was meant to be healing her was a sexual predator, and it took her a couple of years to recover. With her faith and training herself in self-care, she overcame the trauma, keen to not remain haunted by the man.

She became very interested in the brain and studied psychoneuroimmunology and the effect that our thoughts, stressors and traumas can have on the physical health of our bodies. She's not talking about toxic positivity and pretending everything is rainbows and unicorns, but about learning solid techniques for keeping our minds healthy and therefore our bodies.

She says that our brains hear every thought and that it is our responsibility to manage our thoughts so that we maintain our brains in a good condition. It is important not to compare ourselves with others and it is imperative that we understand that we each have our own unique challenges and therefore our courage is unique to us too.

Thanks Julie for taking us on deep dive into our brains and how they can work for us and not against us, and thanks also for showing us how we can make the most of our own unique brain personalities no matter the circumstances we find ourselves in.
