Philip VanDusen - 7 Biggest Website Mistakes Creative Professionals Make13 Sep 202100:21:10

Does it present your brand and service well enough to get people to want to work with you?
In this episode, I talk about the 7 biggest website mistakes that may very well be costing you warm leads and conversions.

1. Talking too much about yourself
● People who visit your website don’t want to know who you are, they want to know how you can solve their problem.
● State your service offering as a problem so your audience can identify with you and your solution to that pain point.

2. Doing too much stuff or saying that you do too much stuff
● Be more judicious and reserved about what you say you do.
● People want to know what you’re good at and that you focus on the problem that they want solved.
.
3. Hiding your work
● Don’t make your website’s visitors have to dig through so many navigations just to see your work.
● Viewership from the homepage drops dramatically so it’s a good idea to put some of your best projects as thumbnails on your homepage so if they get nowhere from there, they get a little taste of your work and the clients you’ve worked with.

4. Not letting customers tell your story
● Ask clients for testimonials on their experiences working with you.
● Testimonials will speak louder for you and your work than anything that you yourself say.

5. Being opaque and not genuine
● Don’t sound like a brand bot. Be a human and sound like yourself because people like to do business with people.
● Be straightforward and keep your copy short.

6. No About page
● This is the right place to talk about yourself, share your story, and add a picture.
● Don’t misinterpret yourself. Let your personality shine through and add snippets that humanize you.

7. No thinking
● People want to understand how you think. Having a blog helps show that you’re not simply a mouse pusher.
● Practicing some sort of content marketing allows your audience to see how you think, what trends and topics you follow, what your conversational style is like, etc.

Philip VanDusen - The #1 Unicorn Skill For Creative Professionals30 Aug 202100:18:33

Writing is the #1 unicorn skill that will advance your career faster and make it stronger as a creative professional.

I talk about:
● How so much creative work relies on writing and good communication
● My experience of finishing my first course —  Brand Strategy 101 and how that helped me realize that copywriting and the ability to capture nuances in copy is important in strategy
● Achieving massive success as a creative pro by developing a unification of both design and writing skills
● The Top 3 skills designers need outside of creative abilities and how being a good copywriter leverages those skills further
● The biggest red flag when it comes to communicating that may be causing projects to be turned down
● Why you should learn to articulate what you do, verbally present your work, and get your point across
● “Content is king” philosophy and the need to leverage being a content creator in today’s competitive world
● Building credibility as someone who knows what they’re talking about and can articulate it well
● Writing as a career advancement insurance as you rise up the ranks in your career
● How to be a better writer, why deadlines are motivating, and the 10,000-hour rule that applies to writing
● Resources that will help your writing skills improve

While it’s imperative as a creative professional that you get better at writing, you don’t have to do it alone. Take a course, read a blog, and start putting it to practice. What’s important is you just start.

Sharing confidence-boosting tips, methods to use, actions to take, and mindset shifts to nurture,
I cover:
●          Why the loss of feedback is detrimental to people’s confidence
●          Confidence as the #1 requirement in order to make it in business
●          10 simple yet highly effective ways you can build your confidence and as a result, positively impact your business
●          What a mastermind community is and why I think it’s the absolute best way to build confidence
●          My Brand Design Masters Guild, the incredible value packed in it, and accounts of its track record of boosting not just the confidence of its participants but also their businesses and revenue tenfold

Matthew Mattola - author, “The Human Cloud” on the Future of Freelancing04 Jan 202100:48:38

In this episode, I’m joined by one of the leading pioneers of building the human cloud. Matthew is the Co-Founder and CEO of Venture L, a freelancer-focused platform that offers them efficient business solutions. He is also co-author of the HarperCollins-published book The Human Cloud which takes a  look at how changemakers use AI and the freelance economy to transform work.

During his previous stint in Microsoft, he spearheaded a partnership with Upwork that built Microsoft 365 freelance toolkit which allowed enterprises to embrace the human cloud at scale.

The Forbes, Fortune, and Bloomberg-featured entrepreneur recently ranked as part of the Top 50 Remote Work Experts to Follow talks about:

  • His book The Human Cloud (as of writing, the book has been published and is available on Amazon)
  • The thesis of doing so much more for so much less by embracing this transformation to digital remote outcome-based models
  • Three ways to embrace the freelance economy and how to leverage the human cloud
  • His view that we need to move away from the resume model of success
  • The Amplification Effect that he wants to highlight in light of the effects of the pandemic to freelancing
  • Why we’re seeing a race to the bottom and what he sees as the solution to it
  • The Venture L business model that integrates, automates, and projects what freelancers should be doing
  • Why he says freelancers don’t need Venture L but their lives are going to get better with it
  • His career trajectory from Microsoft to building his personal brand
  • How he dealt with the big challenge of being deemed “too young” by a bureaucratic work environment
  • Where he finds inspiration and what his ultimate “Why” is
  • His personal mantra hinged on leaving the world a better place through the work he does and the reason he built a scholarship program in his hometown

Stephen Houraghan - Using Branding and Content To Differentiate Your Business28 Dec 202000:57:06

Joining me on the podcast today is Stephen Houraghan of the Brand Master Academy. He helps designers and brand builders learn the art of brand strategy to enhance their career all while better helping the people they serve.

The Brand Strategist and Brand Strategy Educator shares his own journey of getting started with content creation, being comfortable with the discomfort of not really doing well in the early years, and finally achieving the little wins that got him to where he is today — a thriving personal brand with robust engagements on multiple platforms.

 We talk about:

  • His professional journey and the question he asked himself that sparked the pivot in his career
  • How trying to differentiate himself against his competitors led him to the fundamentals of branding and brand strategy
  • The origins of The Brand Master Academy
  • Why he focuses his content marketing efforts on YouTube and subsequently, how he practices content repurposing to maximize his reach
  • His advice to beginner creative professionals looking to find their key differentiating factors
  • Marty Neumeier’s thoughts on what niching down really means and what it certainly isn’t
  • How taking a course by Kerwin Rae began his content creation process that helped him find his groove and voice
  • The ability to sit in your discomfort when first putting out content and not getting a lot of views and subscribers until you go through the metamorphosis that allows you to grow in following and mileage
  • The idea that there’s always someone a couple of steps behind you that you can help
  • His advice on how to choose the content form to start with
  • How he’s been leveraging the use of carousels created out of his valuable video content
  • Where he finds his inspiration and the end goal that guides all the work he does
  • How he balances his personal brand with client work
  • Brand strategy trends he sees on the horizon
  • His personal mantra that revolves around empathy

  • His advice for designers to tap into branding in order to become more valuable and profitable

Jonathan Christian - Using Story to Supercharge Your Marketing07 Dec 202000:43:26

In this episode, I reconnect with Jonathan Christian, who I first met at a conference in London, to talk to him about his incredible story of surviving not one but two near-death experiences that led him to his career today.

Jonathan is CEO and Founder of We Make Stuff Happen, a Canadian-based digital marketing and training agency that helps entrepreneurs and small businesses overcome marketing challenges. A cornerstone of their service is helping SMBs achieve maximum effect by sharing stories with enthusiasm and passion.

Committed to empowering entrepreneurs, non-profits, and businesses on how to successfully maneuver the ever-changing landscape of the Social Space, he talks about:

  • His terrible 2008: the passing of his mom, losing his source of income, and a major car accident that left him with a life-threatening neck injury
  • How this trifecta of a perfect storm helped him begin his social media marketing journey
  • The genesis of his business and how he pieced everything together after a chance encounter that led to him securing his unique URL
  • Leveraging a business’ unique story to strengthen brand differentiation
  • The back and forth struggle of leveraging a brand’s story and focusing on client-centric communication (who you are VS who you serve and what you can do for them)
  • The value of content marketing as a business development tool
  • How he helps his clients uncover their most unique and defining differentiating factors
  • Another near-death experience that cemented his belief that helping other people tell their story is his purpose
  • Getting over the hurdle of just starting and how he helps his clients by leading them in with sample posts for content marketing
  • The mindset shift he underwent to begin his journey as a course creator that now accounts for 40% of his total business
  • Why he makes sure that his mastermind community builds confidence and belief in its participants
  • Being ready to sell to a client that isn’t ready to buy VS being ready to help
  • His view on relationship selling and what the next social media trends will be
  • His personal mantra rooted in a single question he likes to ask himself

Clare Josa - How To Ditch Impostor Syndrome31 Mar 202000:29:47

In this episode of the Brand Design Masters Podcast, I talk to Clare Josa — a leadership mentor, speaker, podcaster and 8-time author who has spent 15 years studying imposter syndrome. Following the successful completion of a comprehensive research study on the subject matter, Clare has just written and published a book entitled “Ditching Imposter Syndrome” where she breaks down what she refers to as the 4Ps or telltale signs of having imposter syndrome.

Considered to be one of the most accomplished experts on the subject, Clare discusses the following:

  • Common characteristics of those suffering with imposter syndrome
  • 4Ps: symptomatic traits of someone with the condition
  • On branding: how starting by specializing in what she’s good at and niching down her personal brand on the subject eventually opened more doors of opportunities for her business
  • Maximizing social media: getting echoes VS getting conversions
  • Why depth is more important than width when it comes to exposure
  • Steps in recovering from imposter syndrome
  • How to turn that little critic in your head into your cheerleader without going to war with it
  • Her personal mantra

Amy Landino - Being An Introvert Can Be A Super-Power24 Mar 202000:41:05

In this interview, I talk with Amy about her career as a new media triple threat—YouTuber, keynote speaker and best-selling author. We discuss her rebranding efforts, dealing with evolving content, coaching people with her mantra of going after the life you want, and leveraging online communication to make this a reality.

The social media maven, vlogging sensation and marketing guru does what she does best and gives an articulate account of the following:

  • How her career developed as a result of doing things people were afraid to do
  • Rebranding and the steps she took to really nail who her audience is
  • Segmenting her brands but also developing a complementary relationship between each one
  • Being purposeful VS spreading yourself too thinly on social media
  • Why people are joining the conversation on Facebook Messenger or Instagram more than Twitter or Snapchat
  • How being an introvert turns out to be a great asset despite being a brand that harnesses online video communication greatly
  • How she stays inspired
  • Her personal mantra that she’s known for across the board

Amy owns two marketing companies — Aftermarq and Vlog Boss Studios, creator of the popular YouTube series Savvy Sexy Social, and author of the best-selling book Vlog Like a Boss: How to Kill It Online with Video Blogging.

Chris Do - Bulletproofing Your Creative Career14 Feb 202000:49:08

We discuss his non-linear career path stemming from being exposed to both analytical and creative schools of thought early on in his family life, the importance of a lifetime of learning, and interestingly enough how he and his team landed an interior design job because of a strong sense of story. That last one opens up a multitude of possibilities and challenges the usual perspective on how to get clients.

The Emmy award-winning designer talks in greater detail about the following:

  • How to constantly challenge yourself and consistently grow
  • The evolving process of branding his personal brand, Blind, Inc, and The Futur
  • How he gets clients
  • Bulletproofing your creative career
  • Tipping the scale between being a Generalist VS Specialist
  • How to stay inspired
  • Two things that designers or creative people need to possess
  • His two personal mantras

The reality is that many creative people express themselves in  a range of creative ways. Here are some of the topics I dive into:

  • Different types of multi-creatives
  • Nurturing a creative outlet that feeds your creativity
  • The most important question to ask yourself
  • The right age to get into a creative interest
  • Ebb and flow between different passions
  • Importance of having a creative outlet outside of your main line of work

Chris Ducker - Why Leaders Must Continue To Learn14 Feb 202000:46:51

At his core, Chris is a problem solver. We discuss rising up to the challenge of finding solutions to our clients’ problems but more importantly, how this entails constant improvement, getting your personal brand out there, and being intentional about showing up every single day and getting the work done.

We talk about:

  • His own mentors
  • The importance of opening yourself up to input in an industry that is all about output
  • How to stay inspired to keep on learning
  • The beginnings of his now seamless brand design
  • Context marketing applied to the Youpreneur Summit landing page
  • P2P connections, the power of personal branding, and how to get yourself out there in a way you’re comfortable with
  • Trends to watch out for: the consistent weight of video as a vehicle, the rise of behind the scenes type of live videos, and the enduring importance of prioritizing your personal online hub
  • Chris’ personal mantra

Philip VanDusen - How To Have a Great Creative Career14 Feb 202000:19:08

This episode gives valuable insights on what it means to have a great career and achieve success especially to those who have been messaging me about identifying their passion, stepping into their purpose, and finding success in all these.

I'll give you a hint: the secret lies in taking advantage of tangential opportunities that present themselves and leveraging them for the new skills they can teach you and keeping at it despite any challenges that come your way.

I talk more about these in the podcast but here are some truths you probably didn't know about me:

1. Branding was never my first career--I studied to be something else!

2. I went through several watersheds in my career before I found contentment in what I was doing. I share why you will too and how you’ll be better for it.

3. I was over 30 when I began my career in branding and design. So don’t think it’s ever too late to start.

BONFIRE: The Mastermind Community for Established Creative Pros

Why is your website not performing the way it should? It’s because you haven’t defined and executed a clear and motivating customer journey in the copy on your website. Mapping a customer journey is the single most important thing to do to assure that you are converting as many website visitors as possible into customers as possible. In this podcast I share 10 steps to creating a website copy customer journey that converts.

Topics

  • What is a website customer journey?
  • The biggest mistake people make on websites
  • The focus should be on them not you, be customer-centric

  • How to start the re-design of your website copy

10 Steps of a Customer Journey: Lead visitors through this thought process

  1. State their problem
  2. Show you “identify” and understand their problem
  3. State the solution to their problem
  4. Introduction to service/products: “what”
  5. How does your service/products solve problem? “how”
  6. How are your service/products different?
  7. How are your service/products better?
  8. What do they get as a result/benefit? “why”
  9. Address barriers to purchase
  10. Then tell them were to go - what to do
