Build a Better Brain with MicroNutrients27 Jul 202200:38:50

Send us a text

This week on Brain Health Matters, Kate Kunkel interviews Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan. She is a Professor Emerita in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, in Alberta, Canada.

This powerful passage from the book is the perfect introduction to this discussion

Your Eyes are Windows to the Health of your Brain22 Jun 202200:34:10

Dr. Thomas Lewis is a medical scientist with advanced degrees from MIT and the Harvard School of Public Health. He has developed novel algorithms to predict and measure chronic diseases with an emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases. He uses a combination of risk assessments, biomarkers and pathology testing, using mainly the eye as a canary in the coal mine to determine where you lie on the health disease continuum.

He joins Kate Kunkel on Brain Health Matters to share powerful insights into the relationship between the health of the eyes and the potential for developing Alzheimer’s. But it goes far beyond that. As you’ll learn in the interview, “lab results” aren’t as helpful as physicians would have us believe, and the push to lower cholesterol is NOT good for our brains.

 Some important points:

2:50 Alzheimer’s is glaucoma of the brain, and glaucoma is Alzheimer’s of the eyes

4:22 How eye and brain diseases are essentially vascular diseases

5:34 The tests and measures we can use to determine what’s going on in the eye and the brain

7:00 Which types of cataracts portend Alzheimer’s Disease

9:00 How pharmacological treatment of tau proteins makes Alzheimer’s Disease worse

11:00 Cholesterol is NOT the enemy

12:01 How allowing pharmaceutical companies into medical schools perverted standard of care

14:33 Why we need healthy fats.

15:00 Can doctors really tell if you’re sick or well?

15:40 What is health, and what do “labs” really mean?

21:40 How chronic infections and dormant viruses can contribute to Alzheimer’s.

24:00 The importance of aggressively treating chronic diseases.

27:00 Ivermectin as an antiviral

17:17 The role of genetics
19:30 Why AZ drugs are a dismal failure
21:28 Caretakers – care for yourselves first!

Good Vibrations !31 Mar 202200:24:56

Send us a text

Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations. (Gotcha singing?)

We are all vibrating all of the time. Everything is in a state of vibration all of the time. When something with a negative vibration intersects with our vibration, we feel bad. That can be anger, fear, hate.... those emotions emit a vibration just as much as a jet engine over our head or a boom box disrupting a quiet morning on the beach. (I speak from experience here.)

On the other hand, positive feelings like joy, appreciation, and passion vibrate at high frequencies. These high frequency vibrations make us feel good, and that’s why we call them “good vibrations”.

We can also create these good vibrations with music, and it doesn’t mean you have to be “good” at creating music. Just be yourself.

Today, on Brain Health Matters, with special guest Diane Annie Mathias, you’ll learn how to capture and utilize the vibration-raising power of music and sound and silence to become healthier and happier.

With respect to silence, Annie says, “Being a part of the whole, in the silence, is a powerful place to be.”

This is one of the most powerful and beautiful episodes we've ever done on Brain Health Matters. Be sure to join us.

Lose Weight and Build a Better Brain with Julieanna Hever and whole plant foods05 Oct 202300:29:05

Send us a text

This week’s inspiring interview was with plant-based dietician Juliana Hever.  chatted about what it means to have a healthy weight and how to achieve that. But you may be wondering why that is so important for the brain?

Well, studies have shown that, a high BMI, or Body mass index, which is our weight-to-height ratio, is linked to slightly lower brain volumes. That’s one issue, but more concerning for many people as we age, is the waist-to-hip ratio. High BMI AND high waist-to-hip ratios appear to correlate to lower grey matter brain volumes than people who do not have a high waist-to-hip ratio.

Why is this important? Because grey matter in the brain contains most of the brain’s nerve cells and includes brain regions involved in self-control, muscle control and sensory perception. That can mean that it is more difficult to do the very things that we need to be able to do to keep our brains healthy – like making good dietary choices, exercising, and even learning new things from sensory input.

Links to the several studies are included in this blog post:
https://katekunkel.com/blog/f/weight-loss-brain-gain

Juliana Hever is a passionate and leafy green-loving author, Registered Dietitian, and fitness expert. She is also a best-selling author of books including The Choose You Now Diet and lectures and counsels with the goal of educating and guiding people towards optimal health.
Juliana's website: https://plantbaseddietitian.com/

Some highlights:
Today she joins us to share the incredible healing and energizing power of a whole foods, plant-based diet so that you can achieve and maintain an optimal healthy weight.

04:00 How to bridge the gap between knowing what to do (information) and actually executing a healthier lifestyle.
06:43 – the One-sized fits-all diet for a healthier weight
10:34 – We are what we eat, and we get to choose with every fork
11:44 – You’re not broken - Why losing the same weight over and over again is so mentally and physically challenging

The Many Ways Music Benefits Your Brain AND Your Life14 Sep 202300:39:14

Welcome to Brain Health matters – I just KNOW you are going to love this interview this week.

Kathy Fester, a long-time music educator and advocate joined me to talk about the importance of music education and music engagement at ALL ages. Her enthusiasm and sheer joy made this one of my favorite interviews of all time.

Whether you’re a parent trying to decide if it’s worthwhile to spend money on music lessons, or a senior struggling a bit with loneliness or some cognitive decline, you will be sure to find this conversation enlightening, entertaining, and inspiring.

As Kathy says, “Music puts a smile in the heart.”

Kathy Fester began teaching music when she was just in grade 7 and has been teaching music in the public school system for the past 32 years

Her passion for music advocacy has put her in leadership roles in many associations and  inspired her to complete her Masters Degree from Simon Fraser University to expand on the knowledge of all the Arts as they affect the brain.

The “Power of Music” in our lives is a passion that lives in the heart and mind.  Kathy continues to advocate daily to bring music into the curriculum of our schools to the level of being a ‘core subject’ equal to reading and writing in our school system rather than a “frill”.

Music isn’t just something that we listen to – it is the “heart of soul” of humanity.

Some Key Points:

5:23 How music helps students learn better problem solving and working as a team, learning to accept that you learn through making mistakes.

7:51 Music changes the brain structurally and what that means for success later in life

14:00 Listening to Music: essential for emotional and mental health, but creating music is so much more

16:00 For parents and educators: recommendation of a fantastic book to understand the many reasons music education is essential for brain and mental health and success. Music education can even help you learn to read better.

21:00 Why you don’t have to learn as a child to get the benefits of learning a musical instrument

23:00 How music benefits stroke patients and those who are suffering with dementia

28:27 Music puts a smile in the heart

30:25 Why are humans so wired for sound?

34:52 Why it’s important for everyone to follow their heart and play music – any music, any way.

Recommended book: The Music Advantage.
