In this episode of the Brain & Life podcast, co-host Dr. Daniel Correa is joined by Deborah Vauclare, loving mother of Leo, who is living with a rare genetic neurodegenerative condition called Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD.) Deborah shares about Leo’s diagnosis and symptoms and how she and her family started an organization called Bisous for Léo with the goal to eradicate INAD and other related neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Correa is then joined by Dr. Darius Adams, clinical geneticist who works as the Medical Director of the Goryeb Children’s Hospital Genetics and Metabolism Division. Dr. Adams explains what INAD is and what types of research are being conducted to better the lives of patients and their families.

Cam discusses his experiences with his father, who suffered from a rare brain cancer called a Chordoma, and how they led him to start his advocacy with the Heyward House Foundation. Through his foundation, Cam helps provide scholarships for youth whose parents are suffering from brain cancer and provides much-needed meals, clothing, and books to children in the greater Pittsburgh area. Cam also talks about suffering from concussions while playing in the NFL and how he stays healthy. Dr. Correa is then joined by Brain & Life’s very own Dr. Katy Peters, who shares her expertise as a neurooncologist to explain more about Cam’s father’s experiences.

In this episode, Dr. Nath sits down with actor RJ Mitte to discuss his experience in the entertainment industry as an individual with cerebral palsy. RJ also shares his journey in finding confidence despite the bullying that he endured throughout his childhood. Dr. Nath then speaks with Dr. Peter Raffalli, pediatric neurologist and director of Boston Children’s Hospital Bullying and Cyberbullying Prevention and Advocacy Collaborative, and Dr. Elizabeth Barkoudah, co-director of Boston Children’s Hospital Cerebral Palsy and Spasticity Center. Drs. Raffalli and Barkoudah speak about bullying in the cerebral palsy community and provide coping strategies for those experiencing it and tips for parents and educators.

On the first episode of the podcast we speak with actor, dancer, and professional choreographer Courtney Platt, who shares her love of movement and how she thrives despite a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Courtney describes how she was diagnosed, her experience with disease-modifying drugs, and the challenges of starting a family while managing a neurologic condition. In their conversation, Courtney also highlights her work with MS in Harmony, a platform that allows people with MS and caregivers to access music therapy online. Dr. Correa is then joined by Dr. Riley Bove, associate professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, and neurologist at UCSF Multiple Sclerosis Center, who educates listeners about the condition and shares important information about in vitro fertilization (IVF) and pregnancy with MS.
