| Matthew 18 (2014) TEASER | 27 Oct 2024 | 00:04:44 | |
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy In Bible verse Matthew 18:20, Jesus says, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am with them.” To which we ask: two or what? G-g-g-ghosts? This Christian horror film featuring a predominantly black cast gets a touch of celebrity from notable costars Luenell and Faizon Love. It’s the only feature film directed by Roy Belfrey, and although it’s competently shot with some genuinely scary special effects, it suffers from narrative weakness by not coherently connecting the film’s haunting to its overtly Christian message. The film centers around a recent high school graduate named Michelle who has perfect grades and a hardworking drive that gets her a full ride scholarship to a pre-med program at a college in Minneapolis, MN. Although her tight-knit Christian family has trepidations about letting their baby stray so far from the nest, they relent because the family happens to own property in the city. Unfortunately, this property has a problem: a ghost problem. It appears to be haunted by the spirits of Russian women who were killed on the property 100 years or so ago after refusing to cell their house to greedy businessmen. The haunting of the Wilshire house escalates the tensions explored in the film between the natural world and the spiritual world; Michelle is always trying to convince her superstitious family that there is a rational explanation for everything, but even Michelle can’t explain the terrifying things happening to her. Finally, the haunting drives Michelle back with her loving family, although it’s unclear to us what Michelle learned from the experience, and how anything the film showed us has to do with the Bible verse Matthew 18:20, which was supposed to be the focal point. We at Boys’ Bible Study are still in search for a Christian horror film that threads the needle of its messaging instead of choosing style over substance. | Sin Apple (2022) | 20 Oct 2024 | 01:18:04
Christian filmmaking auteur Kenya Cagle consistently stuns us with his ambitious, surreal features that stretch the possibilities of narrative. We at Boys’ Bible Study are addicted to reviewing his films; this is our fifth selection of Cagle’s, including FATHER DAD, MY KING, THIRTEEN MONTHS, and arguably his magnum opus THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST. All of these films will surprise you with riveting plot twists and cryptic dialogue. SIN APPLE was perfectly suited to our month spotlighting Christian horror because it portrayed a malicious “obeah” witch named Madam Latasha and her evil love curses that work so well, their victims will do anything to break them. Protagonist Richard is obsessed with a woman named Lola so much that he asks Latasha to cast an unbreakable obsession spell. He then follows Latasha’s instructions by taking a selfie with Lola after the curse is in effect, disposing of the phone afterwards. But Richard messes up and his auntie Rhonda unknowingly retrieves the enchanted smartphone. Hell literally breaks loose as Richard gets devil eyes and goes on a murder spree around both Las Vegas and New York City. Sin City… and the Big Apple? Sin… apple… it’s all coming together. | Let the Lion Roar (2014) TEASER | 04 Aug 2024 | 00:03:25
One of the most bizarre and singular pieces of Christian media we’ve ever watched is this dreamlike documentary from the minds of father/daughter writer/director team Derek and Vanessa Frank, who assembled some of the biggest names in Christian film history to shake the Protestant Reformation down to the “demonic conspiracy” at its very core: the anti-semitic teachings of Martin Luther and John Calvin. In LET THE LION ROAR, Kevin Sorbo, Stephen Baldwin, Eric Roberts, John Schneider, and young up-and-comer Ben Davies star as 16th-century European historical figures who don funny hats and monologue their virulently anti-Semitic views to the camera for extended scenes, some lasting for several minutes at a time. Writer Derek Frank believes that the major weakness that plagues Protestantism is its insufficient respect for the Jewish faith and an unwillingness for the Christian church to become fully “grafted into Israel.” Mr. Frank has written five more “theses,” to add to Martin Luther’s famous 95 Theses of 1517, that propose full deference to Jews from Protestants that he hopes will heal Christianity and save it from vague, unitarian sluggishness that he reads as weakness. This is an ambitious and extremely boring goal to try to sell to an audience, but the Franks make it fun with uncanny corporate stock footage and a series of costume changes that make Derek Frank look like the Architect from The Matrix, if that character were a hardcore Zionist. In general, Derek Frank’s extreme passion for his case of “finishing” the Protestant Reformation is what sells this documentary — he gazes directly at the audience severely like a cat that has just cornered a mouse and wants to talk to it about Israel for an hour before dealing the death blow that will wipe it out of existence forever. The Lion of Judah is a lion after all, and Derek Frank teaches us that to hammer your point home, you must approach your argument with the ferocity of an apex predator. | Spirits Among Us (2009) | 30 Oct 2022 | 01:14:09
A key to understanding Christian horror films is to remember that the demonic possessions and devilish hauntings the films depict could actually happen to you and your family. SPIRITS AMONG US is a delightful low-budget flick from one-time director Ray Jenkins which shows that even demons you yourself didn’t summon can still impact your life. In the film, a Christian family moves into a home that they didn’t realize was formerly the site of satanic rituals. Although Mark, Janice and their daughter Julie are devout Christians with a perfect, loving family dynamic, the residual effects of these terrible ceremonies are ruining their lives. Poltergeist activity starts to develop, centering on a creepy ventriloquist dummy that Mark owns for some reason. In the end, it’s only consulting with a pastor that cleanses the family of their previous tenants’ sins. Fortunately for us, the pastor character gives us a step by step guide for how to rid our own homes of evil. Remember, these demons are just like those you might battle in real life as a Christian, so pay attention! And thank you for spending your Halloween season with us instead of out there “trick or treating” with fallen souls in this dark, secular world. | The Exorcism in Amarillo (2020) TEASER | 23 Oct 2022 | 00:04:39
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy It all started when Ashley Hays Wright accidentally brought an occult book into her home that was somehow mixed in a box of Christian books she bought on Craigslist. In doing so, she opened a “doorway” for demonic influence in her life that went as far as to possess her eldest daughter. Fortunately, the Hays Wright family lived to tell the tale, now immortalized in their feature film THE EXORCISM IN AMARILLO, in which the family portrays themselves as they reenact this dark period in their lives. With a massive body of work spanning at least 10 features and just as many short films, TV specials, and documentaries, the Hays Wrights have proven themselves to be the hardest working family in Christian showbiz. They are also a unique voice in Christian film because they are unafraid to tackle supernatural and horror elements in their work, making them perfect to spotlight for our October rundown of Christian thrillers. But in all of their prolific filmography, THE EXORCISM IN AMARILLO stands out as one of their creepiest statements. Why? Because it proves that Christian horror can hit close to home when you let the wrong art into your life. | Cigarette Burns (2005) | 16 Oct 2022 | 01:23:18
We apply our Protestant work ethic to our jobs as semi-Christian film critics whose task this week is to investigate the religious themes of John Carpenter’s brilliant CIGARETTE BURNS, an hour-long piece Carpenter created for the MASTERS OF HORROR anthology TV series in the mid-2000s. In the film, struggling independent movie theater owner Kirby (Norman Reedus) is tasked by an eccentric film collector to track down LA FIN ABSOLUE DU MONDE. This film-within-a-film is the most rare, dark and transgressive piece of media ever made — it depicts the torture and dismemberment of a real angel. To desecrate something so holy is the ultimate sin, and to capture such a sin on film is to create a moving image so powerful that even simply pursuing a copy of the film causes Kirby to suffer terrifying hallucinations. Anyone who actually watches LA FIN rarely survives, but if Kirby can retrieve the only copy of the film, he’ll make enough money to pay off all of his earthly debts. John Carpenter builds this story about a Faustian bargain to an absolutely terrifying payoff. CIGARETTE BURNS is both a love letter to transgressive cinema and an inventive remix of Christian cosmology, so obviously it’s one of our pet favorite films and something we’ve been looking forward to covering during our month-long look at Christian horror. We discuss spiritual trauma, our personal experiences being deflowered by shock cinema, and “the coming attractions of the soul”. | The Visitation (2006) TEASER | 09 Oct 2022 | 00:03:07
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy This October, we once again strive to guide you down the righteous path by exposing you to wholesome media that still satisfies the natural human fascination with the macabre. First up? Edward Furlong (Terminator 2, Detroit Rock City, etc.) stars in the film adaptation of THE VISITATION, a book by preeminent Christian supernatural fiction author Frank Peretti. Any appreciator of Christian pop culture should know about Peretti, whose thrillers have lined the shelves of many a church library from the 80s onward. It’s obvious that Peretti sees his work as cinematic, since he takes a great interest in film adaptations of his books. He’s co-produced, co-written, and even acted in films such as HANGMAN’S CURSE (2004), another Peretti-sourced story which we’ve previously covered on our show. THE VISITATION takes advantage of Edward Furlong’s charmingly creepy drawl by casting him as a mysterious small town stranger named Brandon who stuns the community by performing Christlike signs and miracles. But as Dark Brandon’s disturbing motivations unfold, it becomes clear that his power comes not from God — but from a force far, far more sinister. | Screened In (2021) | 02 Oct 2022 | 01:31:52
Are we addicted to our freaking telephones? This cautionary thriller from director Lauren Havel and her co-writer Jennifer Havel dares to finally ask this question in the year of our Lord 2021. Fortunately for us, SCREENED IN’s tired critique of contemporary life is dressed up with absolutely insane sequences and creative decisions that kept us on the edge of our seats. When a teenage girl named Peyton starts to notice that she and her friends’ lives are far too focused on what’s happening on screens, she challenges them to a week-long “digital detox”, where they’ll attempt to go “off the grid” with zero electronics to interfere with their concentration. Somehow, despite their good intentions, this ignites a week of their lives with constant drama. Relationships are ruined, family secrets are uncovered, and a shocking plot twist involving a toddler’s medical emergency threatens to change the course of Peyton’s life forever. Is the demonic spirit of the smartphone punishing its teen captors for trying to free themselves from its grasp? In the end, only their own tenacity — and the power of prayer — will allow them to log off. | The Pro Bono Watchman (2022) TEASER | 25 Sep 2022 | 00:06:50
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Genuinely accomplished actor/stuntman Mike Gassaway stars in this suburban thriller about a retired lawyer who is elected to be the monitor (the “pro bono watchman”, if you will) for the child visitations of an ex-convict dad seemingly trying to right his wrongs and gain partial custody of his 6-year-old daughter. Gassaway’s character Hank is the model of the “perfect man” or “Bob Revere” trope that we’ve identified as a common thread between the Christian/conservative media that we cover. He can do no wrong, and despite his intense demeanor (demonstrated by the way he pulls a gun on neighbors who are playing their rock music too loud), it’s clear that the film intends to portray him as the doting husband of his terminally ill, cancer-stricken wife, and an all-around good citizen who is deeply concerned with law and order. THE PRO BONO WATCHMAN does not deal with explicitly Christian themes beyond depicting multiple characters praying, and the film is not overtly political, but its insistence that a suburban white senior citizen is the last thread holding aloft the morality of the United States fits right in with our usual canon. But the real draw of THE PRO BONO WATCHMAN is something we won’t mention in this summary — it contains one of the most shocking mid-movie twists we’ve experienced since 2017’s LET THERE BE LIGHT (dir. Kevin Sorbo). We spoil the twist on this episode, but we’re warning you now to give you the option of hearing it from us or streaming the film for free on Tubi first to uncover a jaw-dropping plot detail that turns the drama of THE PRO BONO WATCHMAN up to 100%. | Genius (2012) | 18 Sep 2022 | 01:14:17
Ray Comfort is a prolific and singular auteur. His guerrilla proselytizing and DIY filmmaking techniques have turned him into a youtube phenomenon with tens of millions of views on hundreds of videos. We spotlight our fourth (!) Ray Comfort film to appear on this podcast, GENIUS — a documentary where Ray uses the life and career of John Lennon to create a conversation starter that allows Ray to lure unsuspecting members of the public into spiritually transformative discussions. We’re obsessed as usual with Ray’s bizarre, fast-paced style of speaking, and his obtuse hypotheticals. Questions about The Beatles suddenly devolve into — what would you do if you found a secret vault filled with money, and knew you could steal $2 million without being caught? Would you murder a woman’s husband if she told you he was “a rat”? Ray uses these queries as springboards to introduce his cattle-like public to concepts such as universal morality and false confessions. He films the whole thing for us — every frantic filibuster, or every debate that turns into Ray and some mentally ill person screaming at each other about evolution, is captured for us in crisp digital. Join us Bible Boys as we are once again astonished by Ray’s beautiful mind and frightening perseverance. Ray knows all the right questions to ask, but he left out an important one — how are we going to get the Beatles off the roof? Drugs, guns, and even nuclear weapons are available to the responsible, self-determined buyer. Welcome to the world of ALONGSIDE NIGHT, a secular and decidedly PG-13 libertarian-interest film co-starring and co-produced by Christian legend Kevin Sorbo and his wife, Sam Sorbo. Kevin plays infamous economist Dr. Martin Vreeland, whose ideas are deemed threatening by the U.S. government, but the real star of the movie is his character’s 16-year-old son, Elliot Vreeland (played by Christian Kramme.) Elliot has a precocious intellect and staunch right-wing economic views, so naturally women find him extremely sexy, and he carries himself with a Bond-like confidence. But can even a wunderkind such as he navigate an increasingly dangerous world, where gold is banned and armed FEMA soldiers are eager to re-educate him in a prison at the Al Gore Atmospheric Carbon Reduction Facility? It’s a thrilling adventure movie featuring some of the most unsympathetic characters in cinematic history, with bizarrely grandiose DIY filmmaking techniques that make for an endlessly compelling watch. | Creed of Gold (2014) | 04 Sep 2022 | 01:17:32
Finally! A Christian feature that dares to ask the question — who funded the Bolsheviks? CREED OF GOLD is the rare type of movie that is both distinctly faith-based yet primarily focuses on economic concepts. If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I’m enjoying this teen comedy, but I wish the protagonists spoke at length about how the Federal Reserve is a marvel of fiscal engineering that has created wealth and stability for our nation,” then have we got the film for you. Protagonist Adam Smith (yes, named for Adam Smith) is a second-generation Russian immigrant who came of age in “the inner city” yet finds himself as a scholarship student at the prestigious Havenhurst University. He’s randomly assigned to write a term paper with the rich and privileged Kirsten Stanford, but their assignment turns dangerous when their research begins to uncover dark secrets of corruption at the very heart of the U.S. government. They conclude that a few bad political actors have manipulated policy to suit their own greed. Who knew? At its heart, CREED OF GOLD is a thrilling celebration of universal morality, the triumph of capitalism, and how the government would be doing a swell job if everyone just followed the rules. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy One of the most insane films we’ve ever watched is this deceptively unassuming-looking flick that actually contains one of the wildest ego trips ever performed in front of the camera. GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE is the story of Ty Bounds (Donald James Parker), a man in his sixties who feels called by God to go back to college. His mission? Disrupt biology 101 class and teach his new 18-year-old friends that they must reject the teachings of evolution. Ty also decides to live in the freshmen dorms, sharing a room with a young Christian man named Brad, who Ty is constantly surveilling and humiliating by doing things such as giving him “the sex talk” at 2am when Brad tries to sneak in late after a party. But a simple school-days comedy this is not — it gets metaphysical when a girl is literally raised from the dead after dying on her feet during a binge drinking competition. Writer/star Donald James Parker sees himself as a cultural hero, and the Gramps character is dripping with the arrogance of a Christian who believes that he can fully know God. | The Grim Reaper (1976) | 28 Jul 2024 | 01:17:47
This lurid and captivating film about a family besieged by demons after attempting to contact their deceased loved one via an occultist could only have been produced from the singular vision of the Ormonds. To us at Boys’ Bible Study, writer/director Ron Ormond, his wife June and their son Tim are the “first family” of Christian movies. Some of the Ormonds’ most famous films, such as IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) and THE BURNING HELL (1974) are still considered Christian genre classics decades later, known for their gripping exploitation-style treatment of Christian messaging that likely emerged from the family’s shared background in vaudeville performance. This same showbiz charisma could also explain why the Ormonds’ films were financially successful, widely distributed through church tours that were sometimes accompanied by a live presentation by Tim Ormond saving the souls in the audience who had just been moved by a shocking film experience. THE GRIM REAPER is plenty shocking; the Ormonds are skilled at DIY costuming and special effects to depict the supernatural horror of the world of demons, making Satan come to life for viewers to effectively demonstrate why tampering in the occult could doom their souls forever. Celebrity guest preachers Jerry Falwell (!) and Jack Van Impe (!!) also stop by the Ormonds’ set to deliver sermons addressed directly to the camera, hammering down the central theme of THE GRIM REAPER: hell, Satan, and his demons are very real. If you don’t believe in demons, you may as well not be a Christian. | Chloe's Mountain (2021) feat. Hesse of Seeking Derangements | 21 Aug 2022 | 01:15:44
Chloe is a rebellious goth girl with an insurmountable “mountain” in her life she must climb. Faced with the sudden death of her parents, and the sudden death of her grandmother after that, she must choose between a sinful lifestyle making music with her nonbinary-coded rock band or to fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish by attending Bible college. Fitting in at school isn’t so easy, but Chloe soon finds a new best friend who shares her experiences — Nechelle, an immigrant from Sierra Leone who lost not only her biological parents, but ALSO her adoptive parents soon afterward. CHLOE’S MOUNTAIN has the distinction of being the Christian film we’ve seen with the most on or off-screen combined deaths, which is an achievement in a genre where sudden death is a frequently used trope that represents the unknowableness of God’s plan. But will Chloe’s college experience straighten her out, or will it expel her back into the world of smoking marijuana with tenderqueers? Hesse, co-host of the Seeking Derangements podcast, immerses herself in Chloe’s world with us, and reveals her picks for the greatest Catholic films of all time. | Voodoo Academy (2000) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy | 07 Aug 2022 | 01:14:48
Six strapping young male virgins enroll in a mysterious, exclusive Bible college led by the intimidating Rev. Carmichael. His sect, the “Neurocystic Christianity Church”, preaches that advanced technology will bring the human race closer to God consciousness. His pièce de résistance is an electromagnetic confessional that doesn’t just forgive sins — it harvests soul energy for an insidious purpose. It’s a very ambitious exposition considering most of the film is just long shots of the boys writhing around in matching white designer underwear. This cinematic vision could only come from the mind of one man — director David DeCoteau, who has 177 directing credits to his name in genres such as gay softcore porn, straight softcore porn, kids’ movies, and Lifetime movies. The range! Here to help us try to make sense of the theological backbone of Neurocystic Christianity is none other than Trans Regret Snoopy, a regularly appearing guest of ours who really knows her scripture and usually does not go out of her way to watch smut. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Jon is a pastor whose spiritual outbursts during church, such as shouting and running around the aisles, have made him the outcast of his congregation. After mass complaints, he is reassigned to shepherd a new flock. But imagine Jon’s surprise when he (a white man) gets to his new assignment only to learn he’ll be leading a historically black church. Members of his new congregation are either bemused or outright concerned by the cultural difference, but Jon quickly earns their trust through his open displays of spiritual ecstasy, which allow him to fit right in to a community where “shoutin’” is the norm when the spirit moves you. What follows is a fascinating and honestly quite wholesome story about culture shock that turns into mutual cultural appreciation. Of course we went into it with the worst of expectations for how this type of story would be handled, given the usual tenor of the mostly white and conservative films that tend to find us in our quest to watch every Christian film ever made. The perspective of black filmmakers and actors lent depth and sincerity to this story that could have gone very badly in the wrong hands. It was still pretty hilarious that Jon’s original church basically kicked him out for being “too black” for them. However, sometimes a fun fish-out-of-water story can just be a charming and silly film without having to ruin it by overthinking. | Christmas Zombies (2020) | 24 Jul 2022 | 01:11:03
Merry Christmas in July! There’s a war on Christmas in this country. The two sides? Santa vs. the undead. Our favorite homeschool family The Wrights simply cannot stop churning out hits. They made 12 films in 2020 alone, so obviously we’ve barely scratched the surface, despite watching HALLOWEEN CANDYMARE on this podcast just two weeks ago. CHRISTMAS ZOMBIES is a zany action comedy featuring ambitious green screen editing and multiple original rap songs. The Wrights are serious about their Christian message — despite a plot focusing on Santa, elves, and zombies, they make several attempts to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season. Ash and Scott use the opportunity of this discussion to dig into the ethos of DIY cinema and to defend the Wrights AT ALL COSTS against their nasty 1-star letterboxd reviewers. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy This Bible fanfiction film borrows elements from police procedurals and film noir in the way it depicts Roman centurions in Bible times as fast talking cops. Claudius was assigned to guard Jesus’s crucifixion and then later his tomb, but what should have been an easy assignment turns bizarre when he sees a bright flash of light and awakens to find the tomb is empty. His superiors at the centurion academy, and the high priests, want to silence him from revealing evidence that Jesus could really be the Messiah. | Halloween Candymare (2019) | 10 Jul 2022 | 00:56:23
Happy Halloween in July! We’ve chosen to abstain from celebrating Halloween due to the fact that it was invented by witches to talk to the dead. Still, we have a job to do. Inspiring us to remain true to our convictions regarding the shadow realm is our favorite homeschool family, the Wrights. Led by parents Ashley Hays Wright and David Owen Wright, the Wrights and their three daughters function as an accomplished low budget Christian film production company. From what we can assume about them based on the details we learn from their films and social media, the Wrights homeschool their daughters, and use this instructional time to work together to create family friendly films with a uniquely Christian message. The Wrights stand out within the Christian film scene for their apparent love of horror — creepy themes such as ghosts or bigfoot seem to be a common theme throughout their body of work. The involvement of their young daughters also makes the Wright films very unique. The Wright sisters’ childlike sense of storytelling creates genuinely surprising and delightful moments. David Lynch famously invokes Transcendental Meditation to dive deep within his subconscious to invoke the signs and symbols that make his films powerful — the Wright sisters are inherently able to do this via their precociously limitless imaginations. Making the godly choice to boycott Halloween candy has never seemed so fun! Ash and Julian celebrate by taking in a Revolutionary War era historical drama that reinforces the popular Christian cultural message that America is a country explicitly founded on Christian principles. The costuming in ALL FOR LIBERTY is genuinely impressive — the cast is clearly plucked from a historical reenactment troupe, and it’s pretty amazing to see a low budget film with such a huge cast, all of whom are wearing expensive, period accurate clothing. The film is based on a true story of Swiss-German colonist Henry Felder, who was instrumental to fighting for independence in the colony of South Carolina. Seeing the action unfold, one cannot help but feel that God dealt America a major W in 1776. Even though we’ve been taking L’s ever since, we’re still #1. | Play the Flute (2019) | 26 Jun 2022 | 01:22:03
Fake sexual harassment allegations threaten to ruin a youth pastor’s reputation in the newest feature length drama by Rich Christiano (1/2 of the famous Christiano brothers, and the director behind such classics as THE SECRETS OF JONATHAN SPERRY and TIME CHANGER). When Brandon, and his beautiful wife Lisa, make it their mission to change the lives of their church’s indifferent youth group by inspiring vigorous devotion to the Bible, the couple don’t realize the challenge they’re facing. Through a series of passionate sermons, including hilariously direct reference to Christiano’s previous films, Brandon causes one particularly delinquent boy named Squirrel to stop slacking off on the job and ripping off his boss (played by legendary character actor Clint Howard). But when spoiled rich girl Shannon tries to oust Brandon by falsely claiming that he “made a pass” at her, it takes a group gaslighting campaign to bring the rest of the teens together, finally united in Christ. This is the fourth movie we’ve covered by director Tim Chey (THE GENIUS CLUB, SLAMMA JAMMA, SUING THE DEVIL). Chey has a truly unique voice in the Christian genre and a bizarre priority in his messaging. In at least three of his films, a character goes on a monologue where he or she claims that car alarms were invented by the devil. He’s anti-evolution, anti-dog (?) and anti-lawsuit (despite making a film about suing the devil). It’s so strange to see these messages coated in y2k “cool” film techniques, as in the case with Gone, which makes constant use of digital film grain effect and typewriter font. | Late One Night (2001) | 12 Jun 2022 | 00:53:01
From the sick and twisted mind of Dave Christiano (1/2 of the influential and accomplished Christiano Brothers) comes this late night thriller about a shocking debate that goes down in a 24 hour diner. Larry is an atheist with a dark past of childhood neglect and several stints in prison. In between working long hours at the milk factory, he expresses his inner torment by sexually harassing every woman he meets. He also loves owning Christians with logic and reason. But late one night, he meets his match. A clean cut stranger named Jesus stands up to Larry in the restaurant, endures his torments, and even pays his bill before leaving. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Merry Christmas in July! We love Christmas movies for their tedious pleas for a return to small town values despite clearly being written by effete big city media types. CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C is one of the most glaring examples of this we’ve ever encountered, which makes it extremely charming. Dan Reed (Ted McGinley) is the affable mayor of a small Alaskan town with the seemingly perfect life, until his former high school rival Mitch Bright (Daniel Baldwin, who sounds almost exactly like his brother Alec) returns to Alaska after making it big in the city with a plan to dethrone Dan as mayor and finally separate church and state by removing the Nativity display from city hall. It’s pretty obvious that this is a stupid idea and our hero Dan is going to prevail, which he quickly does, humiliating Mitch by revealing that his “rich and successful” act is a total lie. What’s more interesting here is how CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C reveals that many adults are perpetually stuck repeating their high school humiliations, living their lives according to whether they were designated a “winner” or a “loser” at age 15. Also, the film is notable for a show stealing performance by Christian stand up comedian and film producer Brad Stine, who wrote the song that inspired the story of this film and who doesn’t let a scene of his go by without completely chewing up the scenery. | In the Blink of an Eye (2009) feat. Anthony Banua-Simon | 29 May 2022 | 01:16:41
Although our journey through Christian cinema has taken us many places, we always return home — the filmography of David A.R. White. He’s the co-founder of Pure Flix, and the producer/actor/director behind so many of the most notable faith-based films. He defines the genre. The tones and themes that most people would associate with their conception of “Christian film” are inspired by David’s body of work. But IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE is an odd one even among his diverse catalog. This Christian take on GROUNDHOG DAY stars David as an atheist cop whose attempt to solve a kidnapping mystery while on vacation with his wife takes an unexpected turn when the rapture happens and traps him in a never-ending time loop. Joining us for this episode is our friend Anthony Banua-Simon. Anthony returns to the show to discuss his acclaimed debut feature documentary CANE FIRE and to lend his knowledge of David A.R. White to our discussion. We originally met Anthony because of his short documentary PURE FLIX AND CHILL (2018), which uses found footage and supercuts to present a compelling biography of David A.R. White, and proves definitively that David is the kingpin of Christian cinema. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy In this dazzling and sometimes intense one-man show by Curt Cloninger, people who personally knew Jesus come to life and share their stories with a (captive?) audience. Barabbas, now reformed after Jesus took his place on the Cross, reminisces about his days murdering dirty Gentiles. Lazarus speaks in a thick Italian accent as he describes what it was like to be dead. And an unnamed childhood friend of Jesus, who is portrayed as effeminate and possibly gay for some reason, remembers how the young Savior only treated him with kindness. It’s a deeply ambitious project that could only have been achieved by an actor as talented and willing to fully immerse himself in his work as Curt Cloninger. This VHS has been a favorite of the Boys’ long before we had a show, and we’re delighted to finally share it with the world. | Tartarus (2005) | 15 May 2022 | 01:08:50
In which we speak in reverent tones about a no-budget contemporary classic piece of sci-fi we absolutely love that gets unfairly marginalized to the “so-bad-it’s-good” canon. TARTARUS (dir. Dave Wascavage) is a deeply spiritual film with a complex cosmology that lends itself to a Christian interpretation. Its protagonist, John (played by Juan Fernandez) is a cruel and remorseless man abducted by an alien spaceship and tortured by an “eternal” in an extra-dimensional realm called Tartarus. As the film unfolds, we learn the John is dead and Tartarus is a zone of preparation for the true eternal punishment of damnation. John can free himself from the vicious cycle if he would only gain insight to how his actions affected others. We contrast this with the films of Estus Pirkle we’ve studied for the past two weeks, in which life on earth is the time limit for repenting and accepting Jesus, and there is no way out of the punishment that lays beyond. The afterlife proposed by TARTARUS is somehow a kinder and more merciful theory of hell that we personally believe is more in line with the attitude of a New Testament God. It’s amazing that Dave Wascavage and crew were able to accomplish such a subtle and detailed story within a campy sci-fi flick that is infamous for its unique CGI effects. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy We continue our investigation on Estus Pirkle — the Baptist preacher whose forays into film with collaborator Ron Ormond are among the most compelling Christian movies ever made due to their eager adoption of grindhouse aesthetics. The sequel to the cult classic IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (which we covered last week) is called THE BURNING HELL. It’s Pirkle’s response to what he sees as an increasingly soft Christian culture that has abandoned teaching that hell is an eternal punishment for sinners and nonbelievers. Pirkle thinks hell is literally real, and that fear of hell is an appropriate tool for converting people to Christianity. In the film, Pirkle (playing himself) meets two tough guys who don’t believe in hell. Before Pirkle can convince them otherwise, one of the men is decapitated in a grisly motorcycle accident. The survivor is now confronting the reality that his friend is covered in “tormenting worms” in hell for eternity, and Pirkle’s ministering to him guides most of the action of the film. The film is very entertaining and atmospheric, but one can’t help but recoil at the lack of compassion Pirkle and his congregation seem to have for the average person, although “compassion” is relative and it’s clear Pirkle thinks he’s doing the right thing by spreading this dire message. Ash and Scott discuss - is Hell real? Will there be worms there? Will there be movies? Will the movies be good? We also compare the work of Estus Pirkle and Ron Ormond to the era of Hong Kong black magic movies that emerged not long after the release of THE BURNING HELL. | If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? (1971) | 01 May 2022 | 01:10:57
At the intersection of Christian propaganda and exploitation filmmaking sits IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? Director Ron Ormand made his career in action-packed B movies until he survived a plane crash that changed the course of his life and career. He found God and began making Christian films instead. He formed a creative partnership with Mississippi-based Baptist minister Estus Pirkle, and the two men co-created a trilogy of spiritual propaganda films that are beloved to this day for being some of the most dramatic, colorful, and lurid examples of Christian cinema ever made. Many Christian films want to use the language of cinema to show the horror of the sinful, secular world — few are actually directed by someone with the skill level to create a truly disturbing scene. This is used to great effect in FOOTMEN, set in a not-so-distant future, where Cuban Communists have killed the United States president and instilled their socialist agenda on once free American soil. The Communists are sadistic beasts who live to kill. They mass execute innocent churchgoers for fun, and in one particularly gruesome scene, they torture a young Christian boy by puncturing his eardrums with bamboo sticks while he vomits profusely. It’s by far the most explicitly horrifying sequence we’ve encountered in a film that is unequivocally Christian in its scope. But the scariest part about FOOTMEN is, of course, that it could happen here! Estus Pirkle address the camera directly while he tells his viewers that the scenes depicted in the film are already happening presently in countries such as China, Russia, and Cuba. This exhilarating call to action, drenched in copious amounts of neon red blood, makes IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? one of the most memorable and genuinely entertaining examples of Christian propaganda ever made. We celebrate the start of the NBA post-season with this Christian basketball movie by director Tim Chay, who is also responsible for two films we’ve covered before on the pod — SUING THE DEVIL and THE GENIUS CLUB. We’re beginning to get a sense of Chay’s signature style. He began his career making made-for-TV secular movies, so he definitely understands the craft. He also seems to have celebrity friends, or knows how to book them. He’s worked with Christian movie faves Tom Sizemore and Stephen Baldwin multiple times. In SLAMMA JAMMA, former baseball power hitter Jose Conseco has a prominent cameo, as does former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, whose appearance is so crucial to the film it transcends cameo and could be considered more of a supporting role. SLAMMA JAMMA’s star is Chris Staples, a professional dunker known for his appearances in international slam dunk competitions. He shows off his genuinely incredible skills in this film as he portrays a formerly promising basketball star whose career was interrupted by a prison sentence. Like Tim Chay’s other films, SLAMMA JAMMA has extremely competent qualities but tries to do so much with the story that it falls apart into confusing and ridiculous scenarios. We got a kick out of the film’s complicated relationship with materialism, and how mean all the other characters are to the protagonist. | Easter Special 2022! | 17 Apr 2022 | 01:18:34
EASTER DREAM (1990) + THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM (2018) + JEHOVAH WITNESSES - SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE EASTER (Web, 2014) + AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY [TRAILER] (2013) He is risen! Is Easter Sunday one of the holiest and most treasured days of the Christian calendar, or does it represent a corruption of the church by pagan values meant to expose our kids to dangerous sex magick? We’ve selected a diverse program of films to help us grapple with this spiritual crisis. Our discussion begins with a handwritten letter the Jehovah’s Witnesses sent to Bible Boy Scott to invite him to their “Memorial for Christ’s Death” — a non-celebratory Easter alternative by the strictest of the Christian sects. Eager to know more, we watched one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ insane, text-heavy video slideshows to learn about Easter’s pagan origins. We were shocked by this new information, but as media researchers, we’d be remiss to not explore different perspectives. Next we go to the Mormons, who offer one of their trademark schmaltzy, glittering, and sentimental takes on the resurrection with a family-friendly VHS tape called EASTER DREAM. We combined this with a more typically Protestant, yet decidedly atypical Easter story — Christian LEGO enthusiast Josh Carroll’s notorious THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM, which uses LEGOs and copious amounts of fake blood to bring the dark story of Christ’s death to the playroom floor. Finally,.we splurge on a demented, fully secular Easter romp: AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY by David DeCoteau. DeCoteau is one of our favorite filmmakers of all time, so we take great pleasure in finally introducing our gentle listeners to his bizarre body of work. We hope this Easter Special will entertain while providing a sober reminder about spiritual vigilance on this controversial holiday. It’s a book series authored by Mary Blount Christian, a prolific children’s book author who has published work outside of the Christian sphere as well as within. Loosely based on these books was a 5 episode home video series directed by Stephen Erkel in 1980. Lead child actress Allison Balson is a notable cast member in all of these, since she later appeared in a recurring role in the 1980s TV series LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. Still, THE GOOSEHILL GANG doesn’t have a nostalgic fan community online, nor anyone who seems to have dedicated time to archiving information about it. (If anyone has more info, please contact us at boysbiblestudypodcast@gmail.com.) Although we didn’t have a lot of clues to follow, we were intrigued to cover this series — in fact, Bible Boy Scott owns a GOOSEHILL GANG episode on VHS from his days collecting forgotten tapes for Everything Is Terrible. We dive into two episodes. Notable is THE MYSTERY OF THE TREEHOUSE GHOST, where “gang” member Michael continues to defy his parents by reading ghost stories they would prefer he not read. The rest of Michael’s friends support his parents unequivocally, stealing the ghost books from him and reminding him he is not allowed. We also check out THE MYSTERY OF THE HOWLING WOODS, where the strong Christian faith of the Goosehill Gang leads them to not be afraid of a convicted armed robber who has escaped from prison and is hiding nearby in the woods where they are camping. If you’re a ten year old with God on your side, you’re basically immortal - unless you’re in the wrong kind of Christian movie and you perish from a sudden illness.

| I'm Not Ashamed (2016) feat. William Hellfire | 03 Apr 2022 | 01:13:04 | |
The tragic, infamous Columbine High School shooting of 1999 had an unintended result: it inspired a pop cultural Christian martyr story that is as well-known to millennial churchgoers as anything from the Bible. The legend goes that when high school junior Rachel Scott was approached on that fateful day by teenage gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, they asked her, “Do you believe in God?”. She responded in the affirmative, and she was promptly executed. It’s a compelling story, but is it true? Eyewitness accounts are conflicted, but that hasn’t stopped Rachel’s legacy as a bonafide martyr. Books, artwork, youth missioning materials, and now this 2016 feature film certify her status as a contemporary Christian icon. I’M NOT ASHAMED (2016) gives Rachel star treatment. The minute details of her life are elevated to drastic importance — even the doodles in her notebook take on spiritual significance. She’s troubled, but ultimately perfect. Even in her death, she inspires millions. But elevating an ordinary girl into a modern myth feels profane instead of sacred. Indeed, I’M NOT ASHAMED is a bizarre, cynical, and often hilarious mess of film with jaw-dropping levels of disrespect. We’re honored to have legendary underground film director William Hellfire as our guest today. He and his creative partner Joey Smack released their Columbine parody film DUCK! THE CARBINE HIGH MASSACRE in 1999, a mere 4 months after the tragic mass shooting that inspired it. Their daring artwork made national news and even got the directors symbolically arrested on a weapons charge, clearly meant as a pageant to get their local police force a television appearance. We had so much fun exposing William to the world of Christian film by showing him the funhouse mirror image of his own work. Buy DUCK! | Surfer: Teen Confronts Fear (2018) | 14 Jul 2024 | 01:35:27
This DIY surf thriller about the son of a military spy superstar is way more than meets the eye, revealing its intense Christian and poly-spiritual themes in an audacious 45 minute long opening monologue. SURFER: TEEN CONFRONTS FEAR is the first feature film by writer and director Douglas Burke, a physics professor at USC with a lifelong passion for surfing and theater. Burke seems interested in the ways the physical and metaphysical intertwine; most of the dialogue of SURFER attempts to explain the unseen cosmic forces that guide our observable physical reality. In the film, a young surfer played by Mr. Burke’s real life son Sage experiences a near death experience while surfing that causes him to abandon the sport. He is visited by the reanimated spirit of his dead father, played by Douglas Burke himself, who warns Sage that the new physical body which has been crafted for him by God using “squid and electricity” will only survive for a short enough time to reignite Sage’s passion for surfing. This scene between Douglas and Sage is truly astounding — it lasts for 45 minutes (nearly half of the film’s total runtime) and constantly escalates in emotion. After this transformative exchange, Sage finds a top secret military hospital, where a doctor called Banks (Gerald James) has information that could change the way Sage understands his world forever. We at Boys’ Bible Study were lucky enough to catch the Los Angeles premiere of SURFER back in 2018 before we ever had a podcast. We’re excited to share this bizarre and wonderful film with our listeners while also diving deep within its fascinating spiritual worldview. It’s your whale, boy! He explains: once you know how a magic trick works, you won’t be fooled again, and this is a larger metaphor for how reading the Bible is an immediate antidote for the devil’s lies. We watched a self-published DVD of one of Zech’s routines from an unknown year. We were a bit surprised to find that it was more like stand-up comedy than a magic show. The Gerbert franchise began as a pitch for a Christian kids music album, but soon took on a life of its own as a show that was broadcast on CBN (a spinoff of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network) from 1988-91. This late-80s era was pivotal for Christian media history. The youth ministry movement of the 1970s inspired many attempts at Christian kids’ entertainment, and then the rise of the VHS format during the 80s led to a robust system for producing and selling media directly to Christian audiences. It’s fascinating to hear Andy’s story of how his idea to create wholesome entertainment for kids snowballed into a relatively high budget production and worldwide phenomenon. But it was the archival work of VHS collectors and found footage filmmakers Everything Is Terrible that brought the once successful Gerbert franchise out of the margins of forgotten media history, securing its well-deserved semi-ironic online cult following. They fell in love with the Gerbert VHS tapes they collected in the group’s infancy, and through their recontextualization of the source material, turned Gerbert into an iconic figure whose wholesome vibes are a welcome contrast to the frequently demented subject matter covered in the EIT films. Our dear friend Dimitri Simakis introduced us to Andy Holmes, and Dimitri joins us to moderate this interview. We are all so grateful to Andy, a genuine and kind man with fascinating insights into the Christian media industry. He tells us that his goal with Gerbert was never to evangelize to kids nor use fear to inspire them, but to simply create a comfortable environment where kids could learn and develop a caring conscience. He has real heart and it comes through in his work. We hope you enjoy this special interview! | A Box of Faith (2015) feat. Jim Beird TEASER | 13 Mar 2022 | 00:02:09
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Disguised as a heartwarming story of a young girl’s steadfast devotion to God, A BOX OF FAITH is classic Christian movie misdirection. Dior’s father is sent to jail after being framed for stealing from his workplace, and Dior opts to run away rather than be sent to foster care. She lives in her family’s storage unit, in which she finds a mysterious box that essentially allows her to mail her prayers directly to God and get an answer from Him almost instantaneously. But this plot goes off the rails quickly when several characters separately engage in discourse about how Dior deserves to have her prayers answered because she is good at earning money. She meets another homeless girl named Emma who is portrayed lazy and freeloading, and the Box notably doesn’t grant Emma’s requests. Also, an incompetent yet enthusiastic social worker named Ms. Ward takes great interest in Dior’s case because she thinks Dior is “ambitious” and “wants to do things in her life”. American Protestant media is always equating strong virtue with financial success, but the appearance of this theme in A BOX OF FAITH is shocking in what could have easily been a straightforward and silly story about the supernatural power of the Christian God. Our dear friend (and Ash’s roommate!) Jim Beird makes his podcasting debut to educate us on Arizona culture and ruminate with us as we ask - does God really have a plan for our pathetic little lives? | Deception of a Generation (1984) feat. Michael Bilandic | 06 Mar 2022 | 01:22:46
The story goes that young evangelist Phil Phillips embarked on a 14 day “Jewish fast” and then wandered into a toy store. He saw a figure of Skeletor and it disturbed him so much that it changed the entire course of his ministry. He then made many works intending to warn kids and parents of the “occultic” influence of children’s media. The most infamous of these works is TURMOIL IN THE TOY BOX, a book by Phillips that was adapted into a documentary called DECEPTION OF A GENERATION. On this VHS co-hosted by Gary Greenwald of Eagle’s Nest Ministries, the two men dig through popular 1980s children's’ toy and television franchises to hunt for insidious imagery within. They don’t have to look far! Scooby-Doo glorifies witches and spell books, He-Man is more powerful than God, and the Smurfs are a living representation of the death of the human body. Who better to pore over this loaded evidence with us than filmmaker, DJ, and Smurf historian Michael Bilandic? We discuss how an infantilized pop culture has essentially turned everyone into a Christian toy freak. Michael’s fantastic new film PROJECT SPACE 13 (2021) is out now for streaming on Mubi and on Blu-ray via Vinegar Syndrome.

| A Man Called Norman (1988) TEASER | 27 Feb 2022 | 00:04:33 | |
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy This VHS release by famous Christian propaganda wing Focus on the Family stars author and evangelist Mike Adkins telling a story about his unlikely friendship with a man… called Norman. In the style of a staged sermon, Mike delivers a one man show about how he earned the trust of this neighborhood eccentric, whose erratic antics scared and alienated everyone else in town. In fact, Mike directly credits the voice of God for giving him the boldness to intervene in this possibly disabled man’s life — which Mike then promptly mines for inspiration to sell a sermon series and VHS tape. The kindnesses Mike showed to Norman are undeniably generous, but the way he seems to mock Norman while imitating him for his show seem callous and weird. Is A MAN CALLED NORMAN fuel for a common criticism of Christianity — that its followers do good works to get to heaven, and not out of the sincerity of their own hearts? The Boys unpack this topic and share their experiences of the difficulties of caring for the Weird Guys in their own lives. | Shatter Dead (1994) feat. Nick Vance of Cinematic Void podcast | 20 Feb 2022 | 01:13:48
This shot-on-video (SOV) horror film is a gory and campy, yet deeply profound meditation on Christian themes. An angel has sex with a human woman, and this perverted “immaculate conception” causes God to abandon the human race. There is no more death. Those who die stay awake in their current state, forever. Actress Stark Raven portrays Susan, one of the last of the living who encounters walking dead, preachers, and terrorists on her wandering journey to find her boyfriend. Along the way, many try to persuade her to take the plunge into the next phase of non-existence, but what is immortal life separated from God’s light? SHATTER DEAD is far from a Christian film, but it proves artistically that the absence of God is hell on earth. Our friend Nick Vance is the co-host of Cinematic Void podcast, and he shares our love of uniquely transgressive film experiences. Together, we wanted to introduce Boys’ Bible Study listeners to the wide world of SOV film, with SHATTER DEAD as a compelling point of entry. 🪞 Listen and subscribe to Cinematic Void podcast: https://www.cinematicvoid.com/podcast Follow Nick on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paranoidfutures/ View our full episode list and subscribe to any of our public feeds: http://boysbiblestudy.com Unlock 2+ bonus episodes per month: http://patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Subscribe to our Twitch for monthly streams: http://twitch.tv/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/boysbiblestudy

Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy It’s a film by Stephens, for Stephens! Directed by Stephen Yake and written by Steve Cleary, STEPHEN’S TEST OF FAITH is the story of a young boy named Stephen who meets his namesake - Biblical martyr Saint Stephen - after his faith is mocked in school by his godless classmates. That night, he dreams he is timehopping through disparate eras, communing with martyrs throughout history. He learns that many people have had to suffer in order to create the opportunities for Christians that exist today. He realizes that to deny Christ is to deny his place in heaven, even if there is a proverbial (or literal) gun pointed to his head. Everyone knows: the only thing better than having to go to Sunday school as a kid is being told you should be prepared to die for it! | The Man Who Went to Heaven (2021) | 06 Feb 2022 | 01:08:16
Since the dawn of Christian mass media and pop culture, people have been fascinated by stories of those who gained supernatural insight into the realms of life after death, but came back to earth to tell the tale. Near death experiences are a common vehicle for this, and have provided fodder for many popular books, movies, and daytime talk show appearences over the years. Notably, a young boy named Colton Burpo provided the vision for HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, a 2010 New York Times best selling book that got adapted into a film of the same name that we’ve previously reviewed for our show. Last year, we received a powerful new addition to this canon -- the completely fictionalized story of David Burrows, the titular MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN. David is a grocery store employee who was shot in a robbery attempt and died on the operating table for 20 minutes, during which time he visited heaven and learned of the spiritual destinations of many of his loved ones on earth. Heaven is depicted in the most incredible way in this movie -- CGI renderings of humans and angels look like genuinely beautiful y2k rave visuals, or Second Life avatars. The film is full of funny and shocking moments, including shows within a show (Dean Cain cameos as a doubting pastor on a TV show titled “Heaven!”). The film offers some wild commentary on abortion and criticizes spiritual leaders who deny the experiences of the common man. It’s one of the most compelling films we’ve watched for our podcast, and we hope you enjoy our review! Ray and Sarah, who both look to be about 12 years old, are somehow physiologically capable of making a baby despite the fact that Ray’s voice hasn’t even changed yet. Ray, the father, is notably way more excited than mother Sarah about this new life. Ray goes to an attorney to try to prevent her from getting an abortion, but ultimately it’s a horrifying nightmare Sarah has about a sadistic abortion clinic that convinces her to keep the baby. Still, what happens next would be considered a tragedy in the fathers’ rights community (preteen division). | 2025: The World Enslaved by a Virus (2020) | 23 Jan 2022 | 01:12:41
🦠 Captivating the internet this week is the debut movie by Joshua Wesely, a Christian influencer from Germany, whose fascinating personal life and unique creative vision caused he and his wife Isabelle to go viral on Twitter and get gawked at by a huge new audience. At first, Twitter users were simply struck by the premise of the film, that in 2025 “Christianity is illegal” and “Communism is all over the place”. But after combing through Joshua and Isabelle’s social media pages for clues on the artists, a startling new fact came out - the couple started dating when Isabelle was 14 and Joshua was likely 19 and serving as her church’s youth pastor. They got married in 2020 soon following Isabelle’s 18th birthday, the same year that Joshua made this film. Naturally, we at BBS got several requests to do a full review, and we rushed to watch the film ourselves. We found a fresh new twist on the Christian “pandemic film” - a microgenre that has naturally emerged since 2020 as certain conservative Christians felt threatened by heightened government surveillance, and spun it into fantasies that their very own reigion would be persecuted. This topic could easily make for a tedious film, but Joshua Wesley’s film debut held our interest very well with delightful ESL dialogue, vivid “YouTube tutorial lighting”, and bizarre subplots involving Christian hackers and graffiti artists. | Moms' Night Out (2014) TEASER | 07 Jul 2024 | 00:04:27
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Billing itself as a light-hearted Christian family film, MOMS’ NIGHT OUT is accidentally a chilling indictment of millennial parenting. Allyson is a busy full-time stay-at-home mom with aspirations to run a famous mommy blog. Feeling unfulfilled in her role as a mother, she decides to decompress with a night on the town accompanied by her two best friends Sondra and Izzy. Despite the full support each mom gets from her family for a well-deserved break, the act of the moms leaving their respective houses triggers a series of chaotic and traumatic events that are supposed to be funny but are actually extremely stressful. Every character is a terrible communicator, and you get the sense that moms having fun disrupts some kind of ancient social order to the point of severe consequences for everyone involved. Directed by the Erwin brothers (I STILL BELIEVE), MOMS’ NIGHT OUT is a competently-produced and commercially successful film, drawing appeal from its relatively star-studded cast including Sarah Drew (GREY’S ANATOMY) Sean Astin (LORD OF THE RINGS), Patricia Heaton (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND) and country singer Trace Adkins. Even more important to us at Boys’ Bible Study are featured performances by Christian film scene veterans Andrea Logan and also Alex Kendrick, one of the famous Kendrick Brothers, who have created and starred in some of the highest grossing Christian movies of all time. We were excited to watch MOMS’ NIGHT OUT for Mothers’ Day, but forgot, so we watched it for “Mothers’ Day In July” and ended up being horrified by the film’s grating millennial humor and depiction of each character as simultaneously whiny and helpless yet obsessively self-important. Bible Boy Julian calls the depcition of family in MOMS’ NIGHT OUT “scarier than THE HANDMAID’S TALE” and we think our gentle listeners will agree. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy [Episode contains spoilers.] The brand new tormented 17th century lesbian nun epic from master director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Showgirls, Total Recall, etc.) is the work of a man at the peak of his career, even at age 83. BENEDETTA is sexy, shocking, funny, violent, deep, and ecstatic. It has all the fire of golden era Verhoeven. He’s so good at intellectualizing while still appealing to your lizard brain - sensitive and sometimes damning theological critiques weave naturally in and out of scenes of bodacious babes sucking and fucking. BENEDETTA delightfully adapts the biography of a real lesbian nun, Benedetta Carlini, while obviously taking tons of artistic license with the story that is already partially legend anyway. The real Benedetta was also an abbess granted spiritual visions that were deemed controversial, leading to a church investigation into her sexual relationship with her fellow Sister Bartolomea Crivelli. Verhoeven’s BENEDETTA uses this compelling story as a backdrop to meditate on such topics as the virtue of suffering, the horniness of religious restraint, and the corrupting nature of power and hierarchy. While many scenes in BENEDETTA would offend a certain kind of Christian - and in fact, the film did inspire protests - it manages to be a powerful celebration of religious devotion and ecstacy while simultaneously dealing organized religion a sharp critique. 📿 View our full episode list and subscribe to any of our public feeds: http://boysbiblestudy.com Unlock 2+ bonus episodes per month: http://patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Subscribe to our Twitch for monthly streams: http://twitch.tv/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/boysbiblestudy

| The Genius Club (2006) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy | 26 Dec 2021 | 01:28:02 | |
On Christmas Eve, a terrorist with a heart of gold (Tom Sizemore in his best career performance) threatens to nuke Washington D.C. unless a handpicked team of the most intelligent people in the world will meet with him to debate moral and political topics. Stephen Baldwin joins THE GENIUS CLUB as a pizza delivery guy with a 220 IQ. Also with them are a seminary student, casino owner, and baseball player who all scored high on IQ tests. What follows is essentially a radical centrism manifesto where characters are sitting around a table screaming about why gas prices are too high while a proverbial gun is held to their head. THE GENIUS CLUB is, true to its name, the most intellectual Christmas movie ever made, so we are thrilled to discuss it with a true Christian genius Trans Regret Snoopy. Her podcast Trans Regret Snoopy Presents the Bible provides a calming scriptural solace for the misfits, rejects, and extremely online.
