"Lanegan"/Greg Prato on Singer Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age)[Episode 116]

jeudi 2 mars 2023Duration 48:04

Greg Prato is a returning guest to talk about his brand new book “Lanegan”. Mark Lanegan is among the greatest voices of grunge rock’s golden era. His unmistakable and instantly recognizable vocals can be heard on classic recordings on songs by Screaming Trees. He can also be heard on several songs by the band Queens of the Stone Age. He was a poet and an author of several popular books. Sadly, he endured addiction, hard living and health difficulties before passing away in February of 2022 at the age of 57.

Prato pays tribute to one of rock’s great poets and lyricists in this book. It features over 20 all-new interviews with Lanegan’s fellow collaborators, friends and admirers. He'll share some of those stories from the book in this interview including one about the Nirvana song Lanegan co-wrote the lyrics for but isn't credited. Which song is it and why wasn't Lanegan given credit? Find out in this episode!

Jefferson Airplane's 'Surrealistic Pillow' at 56/w Richard Butterworth ("Jefferson Airplane: Every Album, Every Song") [Episode 114]

vendredi 17 février 2023Duration 58:42

On this month in 1967, Jefferson Airplane released the album Surrealistic Pillow. It’s considered to be one of the greatest albums to come out of the late 60s counterculture, psychedelic rock era. It's also considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Author Richard Butterworth is back on the podcast to talk about the album and the band’s history.

Richard recently released the book “Jefferson Airplane: Every Album, Every Song” as part of Sonicbond’s On Track series. Richard talks about the band’s origins, how they drew on folk, blues, jazz and even literary visionaries to create their sound and lyrical themes. We also get into the band’s rise to prominence followed by their demise. As the book promo states: “Jefferson Airplane burned fierce and bright before their decline with the death of the psychedelic dream in Haight-Ashbury’s dreamily LSD-drenched hippie heartland. More than any other, the band and their recorded output were synonymous with the birth and death of the hippie era.”

"The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song"/Andrew Wild [Episode 113]

lundi 13 février 2023Duration 49:30

Author Andrew Wild returns to the podcast to talk about his brand new book “The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song”!

The story of the Allman Brothers band is one of triumph followed by tragedy followed by a remarkable comeback in the wake of that tragedy. As it’s stated in the book’s overview: "The music of the Allman Brothers is the pure distillation of the four main ingredients of American music: blues, rock, jazz and country. At their best, they transcended genre: they just were."

In this episode, Andrew talks with me about the legendary Duane Allman, his little brother Gregg Allman, who, along with his bandmates Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe carried on in the wake of Duane’s passing and shortly after bassist Berry Oakley’s death. It wasn’t easy. They went through a rough period in the late 70s into the 80s before marking their comeback in the late 80s, a comeback that sustained right up until the death of Gregg and Butch. We’ll cover the legendary albums including ‘At Fillmore East’ and ‘Eat A Peach’ and the later members of the band Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, who helped rejuvenate Gregg and his bandmates in the late 90s into the 2000s.

"Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983"/Jen B. Larson [Episode 112]

jeudi 9 février 2023Duration 42:00

Jen B Larson is on the podcast to talk about her new book called “Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983”. “Hit Girls” is the story of local and regional US bands whose legacy would be otherwise lost.

Larson dispels the narrative that women are anomalies in rock music. In fact, women have played important roles in every city and every scene all over the country yet few if any know about most of them. The women in this book are now rightfully exalted to cult status. Their achievements are inspiring new generations of women rockers and you’ll hear from them in this book, which also features over 100 rare and never-before seen images.
