Recognizing the absence of authentic Asian-themed games created by Asian designers, Pauline & Marie founded Hot Banana Games to bridge cultural gaps and foster understanding through board games. Their mission is to craft culturally rich games that evoke nostalgia or ignite curiosity about Asian culture, delivering more meaningful and engaging experiences to every table. Their first board game, Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum, raise over half a million dollars on Kickstarter and was a fusion between their passion for cherished family traditional meal and the board gaming hobby. Pauline Kong is a Canadian-born Hong Kong girl. She grew up playing Atari and Nintendo games such as Super Mario and Zelda on gameboy to playing Mahjong, Gomoku, and Novuss. Her day job is an ICU and ADC nurse. She is also a retired magician/producer as her focus has been shifted over to board gaming with her interest towards worker placement games like Lords of Waterdeep & polygamino games like Planet Unknown. Marie Wong was born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada. Her day job is a UI/UX designer with skills that can easily transition to use in board game design. She grew up playing Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and many other JRPGs on PlayStation. Her addictions to board games started after Pauline introduced Carcassonne to her. Absurdist Productions is an indie board game studio in Oklahoma City, owned by Will Thompson and David Thomas. They pride themselves in creating games with unique themes that are well-researched, beautifully produced, widely accessible, and above all, fun to play. Will Thompson (Cherokee Nation) is a professional game designer, writer, instructional designer, and co-founder of Absurdist Productions. Will’s designs include several published games including PaleoVet, several RPGs, educational video games, and other applications. Winter Rabbit is Will’s second published board game for general release, and he couldn’t be more excited to share his culture. For Will, this game represents years of hard work developing the craft of game design to create something he can be truly proud of. In his spare time (which is far too infrequent), Will researches obscure lore, pines to get lost in the forest, and paints tiny spacemen. David Thomas is attracted to old and strange things. Antique tools, pulp magazines, pictures of dogs in military regalia. Similarly, he leans towards games with more esoteric themes like filling curio cabinets, working as a telephone operator, or fighting over food at a restaurant. In that last vein, David is the creator of Absurdist Productions’ first game, Churrascaria: A Cutthroat Game of Gluttony and has been co-author on both solo RPGs Transformation and Seven Murders til Midnight. For Winter Rabbit, David focused primarily on playtesting, streamlining mechanics, and balance as the game developed, as well as encouraging Will to inject as much Cherokee culture into the game as possible. The end result he hopes is a game that is authentic, engaging, and widely accessible. Becky is a Canadian game designer, who currently resides in Seattle. In 2018, Becky & her daughter created Rainbow Bunny Bop, inspired by her daughter's obsession with organizing anything (& everything) in rainbow order. And also her love of bunnies. Since then, Becky has been learning the ins and outs of self-publishing a game -- everything from designing cards, through manufacturing, and selling to stores. To help other indie designers like herself, Becky also runs a twice a year event for local designers to come showcase their games.
