Margie Thompson is a Queenslander who lived in both North Queensland and Brisbane, before travelling the world and settling in the USA.

For the last few years, Margie has been talking all things Bluey on her YouTube channel - episode recaps, fan theories, news, hidden details and Easter eggs.

In this episode we talk being an Aussie expat in the US, her move back to Australia, how she discovered Bluey and why she loves these talking dogs from Brisbane.

We were lucky enough to attend the official opening of Bluey's world, alongside all of the cast and crew of Bluey, as well as the creatives who have brought the interactive experience to (for) real life.

This February it's the Bluey and Bunnings crossover with Bunnings stores across Australia and New Zealand diving into the Hammerbarn spirit!

Select stores will rebrand as Hammerbarn, with all stores offering up free Bluey-themed kids D.I.Y workshops every weekend in February. You just need to book in here.

A big thanks to Bunnings and BBC Studios who had us out to the launch at the for real life Hammerbarn - the Bunnings store on Settlement Road in Keperra which featured in the episode.

It's that time of year when we look back at the year that was, and highlight some of our classic catches - our absolute favourite podcast moments of 2023.

It's been another massive year for Bluey, with the show going from strength to strength internationally, the second album 'Dance Mode' being released, the announcement of 'The Sign', a 28 minute special coming in 2024, Blueyfest counting down the top 100 episodes and a teaser of 'Bluey's World' coming to Brisbane in August.

To celebrate five years of Bluey on Australian TV, the ABC has been running Blueyfest, which will culminate on November 19th, with a countdown of the top 100 Bluey episodes.

The order of the top 100 will be decided by fan votes, with ABC Kids having asked all of us to vote for our top 5 episodes.

The ABC also decked out a retro ice cream van in full Bluey kit, and drove it from Sydney to Brisbane, stopping at towns along the way and culminating at the South Bank Parklands in Brisbane, home of the episode Ice Cream.

So we grabbed the card table, and wound our way down to record a podcast ep at South Bank, right near the van!

In the space of five years, Bluey has gone from a new kid on the animation block, to being lauded as one of the greatest ever shows on TV.

Aside from the critical acclaim, Bluey has set new viewing records both in Australia and in the USA, and has picked up a swag of awards including an Emmy, a BAFTA Award, Logie Awards....and the list goes on.

David Peterson is a Brisbane based editor and screenwriter who mostly worked on season two of Bluey, but also come in to help production of season one at the very beginning.

David's credits include Dance Mode, Flat Pack, Dad Baby, Hammerbarn, Bingo, Army and more, and he sat down to talk about the early years of Bluey, what the role of editor entails in an animation series, and just what goes through your head when you are handed a script like Dad Baby!

Marianne Taylor is an architectural historian who investigates the history of houses and reveals the secrets of the people who lived there. She is a wealth of knowledge on the different styles of architecture that have appeared in Brisbane across the decades.

Marianne has also led the Brisbane Retro Project; documenting the post-war houses of Brisbane, and has been the President of the National Trust of Australia (Queensland).

After wowing international audiences for the best part of 12 months, Bluey's Big Play: The Stage Show returns to Australia, with a season beginning on December 30th at the QPAC Playhouse in Brisbane.

To celebrate the return of the show to Bluey's hometown, and the theatre that played host to the world premiere, Justin spoke to Bluey's Big Play director Rose Myers.

We'll hear about the reaction to the show from Bluey fans around the world, and how much the team is looking forward to its Australian homecoming.

Brisbane's iconic CityCats (named so as they are a catamaran) carry locals and visitors up and down the Brisbane River everyday. You've seen the CityCats in the Bluey episodes Spy Game and Ice Cream (and also in our pod artwork).

To celebrate the opening of Bluey's World this week, 2 of the Brisbane CityCats have been transformed into City Dogs, with Bluey and Bingo now sailing up and down the Brisbane River.

It's almost peak Bluey season at the moment, with new episodes starting to air in Australia, a new album only days away, and the release of Bluey's first ever music video.

Jazz D'Arcy is a member of the Bluey music team who has worked on the music for episodes like Born Yesterday, Family Meeting, Pass the Parcel and Copycat.

But it's on the episode Rain that Jazz's work really shines, composing the score for the almost dialogue free episode, as well as a vocal version - Rain (Boldly in the Pretend).

The vocal version has just been released as Bluey's first ever music video ahead of the brand's second album Dance Mode, which releases on April 21st.

To celebrate all the things Justin sat down with Jazz in the Bluey music studio to chat Dance Mode, the music video, new Bluey episodes and more.

It's a Valentine's Day special with Julia Quinn, the New York Times bestselling author of the Bridgerton series.

After our recent Father's Day episodes, we were contacted by US filmmaker Joe Gidjunus from Veracity Studios in Philadelphia.

Joe was in the early stages of a new documentary called 'Grown Up Dad'; a film which aims to challenge the negative stereotypes of fathers on TV and in the media.

Shortly after Bluey launched in America, Joe discovered the show and finally found the positive fathering role model he'd been longing for.

Joe is currently in Australia filming for the new documentary and Justin jumped at the chance to meet up for a chat about the film, and Brisbane's very own fathering legend!

Costa Kassab is the art director for Bluey, and his been with the show through its development, funding and launch.

We were really excited to talk to Costa, as the artwork of Bluey is what we were always fascinated with, and what inspired this podcast.

Costa speaks about creating the world of Bluey, the role that art plays in the show and how it works with the other production elements of the show.

There's also some deeper analysis of episodes such as Ice Cream and Grandad.

The third Bluey album 'Rug Island' is out now and to celebrate we sat down with Daniel O'Brien who is part of the Bluey music team.

'Rug Island' is themed around play, imagination, adventure and friendship so it was only appropriate the Rug Island became the title track - an episode that sums up all of those ideas.

In this episode we take a dive into the album, and find out more about how the Bluey music team works together.

Dan is a Brisbane based composer whose main focus is music for the screen, but who also writes for choirs and orchestras.

We've got a raily good idea to get your school holidays on track, with a visit to the Cross River Rail Experience Centre.

It's a great spot for the kids these holidays as it's free to visit!

Cross River Rail is one of Brisbane's biggest civil infrastructure projects, with a new underground rail line through the CBD and a number of new stations - including one at Albert Street in the CBD, just a stones throw from where Alfie is dropped off for his first day at work in The Quiet Game.

We dropped in to check out the Experience Centre, which is an immersive and interactive educational experience.

Not only can kids learn about the project but they can learn about science, engineering, history and they'll learn a bit about Brisbane as well.

The centre is really much more than just a visitor centre; it’s a true experience in every sense of the word, with virtual reality stations, a maker space, a 270 degree wrap around theatre and touch screens galore.

We spoke to Russell Vine, who is the Executive Director, Marketing and Communications for Cross River Rail and is a wealth of knowledge about the project and the Experience Centre.

The Cross River Rail Experience is located at 1/151 Elizabeth Street, just across from the Wintergarden Food Court.

Entry is free and there is an elevator and wheelchair accessibility throughout the Experience Centre.

With only days before new episodes of Bluey drop, we went down to the Wynnum Whale Water Park as featured in the Pass the Parcel episode.

In this episode we chat possible locations for the rest of season three, the writers workshop with Joe Brumm that we attended, and explore this part of Brisbane with our special guest, Spencer Howson.

Spencer spent 25 years as a broadcaster with the ABC, many of those were as the number one rating host of ABC Radio Brisbane's breakfast show. He is now with 4BC, hosting his own weekends show as well as lecturing the next generation of radio talent at the University of Southern Queensland.

Spencer spent his childhood in the area, with one of his childhood friends being Aussie radio star Kyle Sandilands. As kids, these two future radio stars were writing and recording radio scripts and terrorising the neighbourhood on their BMX's.

We also went on a tour, with Spencer showing us Kyle Sandilands childhood home and the Great Wall of Manly!

In our recent chat with artist Debra Hood, she spoke about how one of her artworks of Brisbane was used as a wrap for one of the CityCats - the iconic vessels that transport people along the Brisbane River..

You've seen the CityCats in Bluey - in episodes like Spy Game and Ice Cream. Debra mentioned how much she'd like to see some Bluey wrapped CityCats - in both Bluey and Bingo versions.

One Brisbane mum was way ahead of us though! Madonna Stephens lives in the riverside suburb of Hawthorne and saw first hand the devastation following the Brisbane Floods of 2022, in particular the damage to the CityCat fleet.

As a way of inspiring Brisbane kids, helping them recover after the floods and to bring in tourist revenue, Madonna has suggested that we do indeed wrap some of our beloved CityCats in Bluey and Bingo attire.

Madonna currently has a petition before Brisbane City Council, asking that council look at this option - you can sign the petition here (active until June 1, 2022).

Debra Hood is one of Brisbane's most loved contemporary artists, who, just like the Bluey art team, documents the shapes and colours of Brisbane's urban landscape.

Debra is well know for her portrayal of the Queenslander houses of inner city Brisbane, along with the colours of what she refers to as 'confetti'; Brisbane in spring time when the blossoms of Jacaranda, Poinciana, Pink Trumpet and Golden Penda fall to the ground creating a vibrant carpet of blossoms.

Her artwork has even adorned one of Brisbane's CityCats, the blue and yellow vessel you've seen in Spy Game.

When Airbnb brought the Heeler House to life in Paddington it seemed only natural that Debra put brush to canvas, and recreate Bluey's house once again as a beautiful piece of art.

And Debra had a surprise for us!

We sat down with Debra for a chat about Bluey, Queenslander houses, her work and why she couldn't resist the charm of Bluey's house.

Brisbane composer, arranger and orchestrator Joseph Twist has been a part of Joff Bush's Bluey music team since season one.

The pair, who both grew up and studied in Brisbane met by chance in New York while attending a summer school for budding screen composers.

You've heard Joe's handiwork on episodes such as See Saw, Blue Mountains and Verandah Santa and also has the distinction of having created the soundtrack for Joe Brumm's favourite episode - Calypso.

Away from Bluey, Joe is in demand as a composer for film and television as well as the concert stage. He has also worked extensively in choral music, with numerous commissions and performances of his music from choirs in Australia and around the world.

In the mid 90's there was an explosion of bands coming out of Brisbane and gaining attention both nationally and internationally.

There were four big bands leading the way - of course you know Dave McCormack aka Bandit's band Custard, along with Powderfinger, Regurgitator and Screamfeeder.

When Screamfeeder found themselves on high rotation on Triple J (the national youth radio station) in 1996, the band were based in the inner north-west of Brisbane - Paddington, Bardon, Milton and Red Hill - the suburbs that Bluey is now showing off to the world.

Justin sat down with frontman Tim Steward on the deck at Ashgrove Library to chat about their 30 year history, the Brisbane music scene and their new album 'Five Rooms'.

After days of torrential rain and what meteorologists termed a rain bomb, many parts of Brisbane went under as the Brisbane River and many suburban creeks flooded.

It's the most severe flooding in Brisbane since 2011, but this time around what caught many locals out was just how fast the water rose.

Lou lives in the suburb of Oxley which is in Brisbane's south west - it was devastated by the floods in 2011, and while I couldn't get in to speak to her in person because of the flooding, I managed to get her on the phone to chat about what Oxley was going through.

There were plenty of good news stories as well, like the cows rescued from a shed roof by a group of kayakers.

Bonus fact - Oxley is one of Dave McCormack aka Bandit Heeler's favourite Brissy suburbs - we know because he dropped that factoid when we got the chance to interview him last year. You can listen to that episode here.

If you love Bluey your social media feed has probably been filled with snaps of people outside the for real life Heeler house in the Brisbane suburb of Paddington.

Paddington and its neighbouring suburb of Red Hill feature heavily on Bluey, with the iconic vistas of steep hills dotted with the timber and tin of traditional Queenslander cottages.

Donna Dyson is an academic focusing on literacy in early childhood, and a children's author and composer. Her music has won a number of awards including being named APRA ASA Australian Songwriter of the Year.

Donna has lived in Paddington for over 20 years, and has seen the suburb change from a working class suburb, to the elite, inner city haven for professionals that the area has become.

She lives in a Queenslander that dates back to 1884, in a street that is heritage listed, and she shares what life in Paddington is like.

In a quiet street of inner city Brisbane the Heeler house has been brought to life by Airbnb and BBC Studios.

The house is found in the same part of Brisbane that much of Bluey is set in - it's in Paddington very close to the suburban border with Red Hill.

It was amazing to see the house but it was also fantastic to catch up with some of the key people behind the scenes of bringing the Heeler house to life.

We spoke to Bluey producer Sam Moor, Susan Wheeldon who is the Australian Country Manager for Airbnb, Madeleine Jelfs who is a senior marketing manager with BBC Studios.

We also spoke to Michael from the Bluey Locations Instagram page to see what he thought of the house.

Winton isn't just the cheeky little bulldog on Bluey, it's an outback town with a heap of Aussie history on tap and it's also the dinosaur capital of Queensland.

Winton is also the birthplace and childhood home of Bluey creator Joe Brumm.

Lou jumped onto the first ever Winton Day Trip aboard Alliance Airlines and spoke to everyone behind the scenes of Winton tourism; Winton Mayor Gavin Baskett, David Elliott and Jessie from Australian Age of Dinosaurs as well as Jenny Elliott from the Waltzing Matilda Centre.

There's been a ton of Bluey related stuff in the news recently - from the news that Bluey is now the number one show in the US, from Kelly Clarkson giving her entire audience a trip to Brisbane to visit Bluey's world - even the news that American Express named Brisbane as one of their trending travel locations for 2025.

Much of the growth of the show has been driven by adult Bluey fans, many of whom don't even have kids!

How has a (supposedly) show for kids resonated so well with grown ups?

Sarina Petersen will be one of the speakers at the upcoming TEDxQUT event on October 27th.

Sarina is a student of Law and Behavioural Science (Psychology) at QUT and works as part of the in-house legal team of one of Queensland’s largest not-for-profit organisations. She is most interested in social psychology and human behaviour - particularly, the way that these interact and influence one another.

Sarina is a fond viewer of the Brisbane-produced cartoon Bluey and is enthusiastic about analysing its enormous worldwide appeal and cultural impact - particularly its impact on adults.

In the Chest episode Bingo adds a special player to Bandit's chess game called Charleville.

The Queensland town of Charleville lies on the banks of the Warrego River, and is around 700 kilometres west of Brisbane. It's not the first outback town to be name checked in Bluey, with Winton, the dinosaur capital of Australia, getting their own doggy character.

In Charleville there's plenty of Bluey related activities on offer and Lou's explored the town on her epic road trip.

In the mid-90's the alternative music revolution was well underway, and Brisbane bands like Regurgitator, Screamfeeder, Powderfinger and Custard (featuring one future Bandit Heeler) were taking Brisbane to the world.

And 25 years before Bluey had international audiences swooning over Queenslander houses and the steep hills of Brisbane's inner city, writer Nick Earls had readers the world over falling in love with the River City when he released the smash hit Zigzag Street, which was set in Red Hill.

Lou sat down with Nick to chat about all things Red Hill and Nick's efforts at renovating a Queenslander workers cottage which featured a three sided dunny.

For over 30 years the Variety Bash has seen Aussies take to the outback in unique vehicles to raise money for the children’s charity Variety.

It’s all about giving a hand to kids in need – whether through disability or disadvantage.

The Bash kicks off in Longreach on November 6th and along the way will be visiting schools, with the cars and the teams bringing lots of fun and smiles to kids in the outback.

One car that will be bringing much joy will be Russell Gray and his Bluey themed vehicle – Russell has recreated the Heeler’s Queenslander house and attached it to a classic Holden 1 tonne ute.

Lou was up bright and early on Record Store Day to secure her copy of Bluey: The Album on vinyl from her local record store, Relove Oxley.

There were queues down the street of parents wanting to nab this hot ticket item!

She caught up with Relove owner Jason Fahy about Bluey on wax, and why this record has been in hot demand on Record Store Day.

Bluey and the Heeler family live in a Queenslander; to be precise it's a single fronted worker's cottage that is prevalent throughout the inner suburbs of Brisbane.

Queenslander houses dates from the late 1800's through to around the end of the second World War, and to find out more about the design we spoke to heritage architect Andrew Ladlay.

Andrew is one of Queensland's most awarded heritage architects and is a wealth of knowledge on preserving these pieces of Brisbane's history.

We took ourselves off to Hawthorne Park in Brisbane's east, and set up the card table in the location that inspired the Bluey episode Cafe.

Keen Bluey observers may also recognise the park from Season 1's Wagon Ride episode.

Early in 'Cafe' Bandit can be heard saying to Fido that "they're a pain to maintain", and we reckon that could be a reference to the Heeler's Queenslander house - remember that bit from Hammerbarn where the gutter falls down!

So we spoke to one of Queensland's most awarded heritage architects, Andrew Ladlay for a bit of Queenslander 101, and discover a bit more about this iconic Brisbane house design.

And when your friend drops a bombshell and lets you know that her daughter was the star of 'Cafe', you just have to find out a bit more about what it's like lending your voice to the Bluey-verse. NB - keeping with Ludo Studios tradition of not crediting the child actors on the show, we have not identified her - we'll just call her Annie.

To celebrate we spoke to Dr Justin Coulson about Bandit's parenting style, and the importance of a positive role model for dads being portrayed on our TV screens.

In the background of Bluey's house you can see the Mt Coot-tha TV transmission towers blinking away. Brisbane really is lucky to have this bushland oasis so close to the CBD!

The other Mt Coot-tha landmarks that appear in Bluey are the Tropical Display Dome and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium which both appear in the 'best of Brisbane' view from the Heeler's deck.

You can find both of these structures in the grounds of the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens at the base of the mountain, but today we've set our card table up at the very top - on the Mt Coot-tha lookout just outside the Summit Cafe.

Our guests on this episode are Channel 7 newsreader Kendall Gilding, who winds her way up the mountain each day to read the 4pm bulletin, and Rebecca and Imogen from Nature Play Queensland. They'll run us through some games we can play in and around Mt Coot-tha and talk about the Nature Play Passport - a fantastic resource for parents to get their kids playing in the great outdoors!

Jacob Williams is one of Australia’s premier puppeteers, puppetry directors and the co-artistic director of Lemony S Puppet Theatre.

Jacob has recently returned from performing on Broadway as the Head of Puppetry in the Tony award winning King Kong, Alive on Broadway to take on the role of Puppetry Director for the Bluey Stage Show.
