Episode 23: The Lure18 Jul 202201:08:54

This week Josh and Drusilla discuss 2015's Polish horror mermaid musical, The Lure. From Wikipedia: "The Lure (Polish: Córki dancingu, lit.'Daughters of Dancing') is a 2015 Polish horror musical film directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska. It tells of two mermaids who emerge from the waters and perform in a nightclub. One falls in love with a man, and gives up her tail, but loses her voice in the process. The story is a reworking of the 1837 fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, with inspiration from Smoczyńska's experiences. After a Polish premiere, the film screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and Fantasia Film Festival, to mixed reviews."

Then they get into the feature, which they both love. They discuss its release and distribution by Janus, how it doesn't feel like the 80s, the immigration allegory vs the trans allegory,  Dru compares it to Cat People, the terrible things we do for dick, the politics of aging and beauty, Josh hates dolphins, more Cat People and the Czech film Daisies.

When Josh brings up Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the pair get into problematic trans narratives in film which covers Silence of the Lambs, Dressed to Kill, She-Man, and Dog Day Afternoon.  Then they wrap up with Have They Seen It?

Episode 22: Lips of Blood (w/special guest Steak Mtn aka Christopher Norris)11 Jul 202201:14:53

This week Drusilla and Josh are joined by the legendary Steak Mtn aka Christopher Norris. Steak Mtn is the graphic designer behind legendary punk bands like Against Me! and others and is the author of Hunchback '88. He's also a hardcore punk musician and sometimes porn director. Steak brought the gang Jean Rollin's Lips of Blood. From Wikipedia: "Lèvres de Sang (English: Lips of Blood) is a 1975 French horror film directed by Jean Rollin. The film tells the story of a man who begins to have visions of a young woman dressed in white who is locked behind the gates of a château.[1][2] The director was "forced" to shoot the hardcore version as well under the title Suce Moi Vampire.[3]"

But first! Black Phone, the theaters of New York City, Belladonna of Sadness, X, and Ti West, the remakes of the 2000s, Ticket of No Return and Ulrike Ottinger.  Movies getting porn films wrong.

Then the gang gets into the feature and the work of Jean Rollin, who made tons of erotic horror movies in the 70s as well as hardcore porn. Steak Mtn saw these in the 90s and they struck a chord with him. Josh loves that this begins at a perfume launch party and how pretentious it is. Goofy fangs. How much of the movie is just vampires walking? A lot! And so what. Drusilla compares it to the Spanish film Count Dracula's Great Love. The movie has a secret cabal storyline that's a little weird, but it has great weird interiors, too, so it evens out. Dario Argento comes up a lot. There's a Jean Rollin film INSIDE this Jean Rollin film. The ending is so beautiful and romantic. But is it incest?

Next week's movie is a Polish mermaid horror musical, The Lure.

But first! Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Hammer House of Horrors. They wish all the daddies a Happy Father's Day and Drusilla gives her Western recs before getting into her survey of Child's Play and Chucky properties. They also talk about Flight Attendant and Sharon Stone.

During the film, they talk about Abel Ferrara's oeuvre including Driller Killer, The Addiction, Body Snatchers, and Bad Lieutenant. It employs mockumentary-style storytelling with found footage and docufiction elements, using actor "interviewees" to present the narrative of a family trying to come to terms with the drowning death of their daughter, and the potentially supernatural events they experience after it."

But First! Drusilla and Josh talk about typewriters, Josh's John Waters ripoff era, Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly and Summer Stock, Jinx Monsoon, Supernatural vs Riverdale, and more!

Then they get into the feature. They can't believe documentaries aren't the normal format for found footage horror. They discuss man vs nature horror and comp titles like Tickled, Three Brothers, Ghost Watch, and Picnic at Hanging Rock.  Its influence on Mike Flanagan's Haunting of Hill House. They discuss the film's history, its rise as a cult film, and its mysterious director, Joel Anderson. Then they play Have They Seen It?

Next week's movie is Abel Ferrara's Ms .45

Episode 19: The Whip and the Body20 Jun 202201:00:11

This week Drusilla and Josh get all into Mario Bava's BDSM haunted house flick, The Whip and the Body, starring Christopher Lee. From Wikipedia: "The Whip and the Body (Italian: La frusta e il corpo) is a 1963 gothic horror film directed by Mario Bava under the alias "John M. Old". The film is about Kurt Menliff (Christopher Lee) who is ostracized by his father for his relationship with a servant girl and her eventual suicide. He later returns to reclaim his title and his former fiancée Nevenka (Daliah Lavi) who is now his brother's wife. Menliff is later found murdered, but the locals believe his ghost has returned to haunt the castle for revenge."

But first! Dru got a tattoo. the D from Andy Warhol's Dracula! Cronenberg confirms that Crimes of the Future is a trans movie. They discuss the sexiness of mugshots. Drusilla watched the Gonzo Bollywood action epic R-R-R while Josh did a tour of the work of director Penelope Spheeris with Boys Next Door and Suburbia.

Then they get into the feature which they compare to Scooby-Doo and Dark Shadows. The suicide dagger dome is rad. They go into gothic media, Christopher Lee, Daliah Lavi, Mario Bava, murder by curtains, and more before playing Have They Seen It?

Episode 18: Men13 Jun 202201:12:09

This week Josh and Drusilla schlep to the movies to see Alex Garland's A24 joint Men (2022).

From Wikipedia: "The film stars Jessie Buckley as a widowed woman who travels on holiday to a countryside village but becomes disturbed and tormented by the strange men in the village, all portrayed by Rory Kinnear."  But first! Drusilla and Josh talk about John Waters' Polyester for a sec before pivoting to David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future, which they both ADORED.

Then they get into Men. They both sort of like this movie... with reservations. They talk about the performances by Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear and the beautiful cinematography. The pair discusses the state of arthouse horror and the evolution (or dissolution) of the A24 brand. Josh feels like arthouse/A24-style horror films are going out of style in favor of teen popcorn films. Drusilla blames it on Pixar! Of course, they bitch about the term "elevated horror." Josh is sick of tragic backstories. They both wished for Straw Dogs and got The Green Man instead. Then they play Have They Seen It? Before wrapping up.

Episode 17: Trouble Every Day06 Jun 202201:14:09

This week! Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day. From wiki: "Shane and June Brown are an American couple honeymooning in Paris in an effort to nurture their new life together, a life complicated by Shane's mysterious and frequent visits to a medical clinic where cutting edge studies of the human libido are undertaken. When Shane seeks out a self-exiled expert in the field, he happens upon the doctor's wife, another victim of the same malady. She has become so dangerous and emotionally paralyzed by the condition that her husband imprisons her by day in their home. It is Shane's chance encounter with this woman that triggers an event so cataclysmic and shocking it might just lead him to rediscover the tranquility he seeks to restore for himself and his new bride."

But first!

The ghost of Paul Lynde and the greatness of Bye Bye Birdie. the Haunting of Drusilla and ghosts traveling through mirrors, Drusilla watched Chilly Scenes of Winter. Josh watched Birdemic: Shock and Terror and Possession from 1981.

Then they get into the feature, Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day. Content warning: this film contains sexual assault and stars Vincent Gallo. Drusilla isn't the biggest fan of Denis' work or this movie while Josh likes it a little more. They discuss the complicated legacy of Vincent Gallo who was once very cool (Buffalo 66! Brown Bunny! was in a band with Jean-Michele Basquiat!) and became very much not that. Dru loves Beatrice Dalle. Josh was marked by the 90s and that sucks. Johnny Rotten sucks now, too. They discuss the plot and whether or not the movie is sexy. Josh thinks Vincent Gallo is a good actor, but Dru compares him to Joe Dallesandro. Vincent Gallo doesn't understand his lines? They discuss the aesthetics and music of the film. Things shot on digital video are kind of blech. They like the Tindersticks song, though. There are a few cliche art film scenes in this. Josh compares this to Daughters of Darkness, Dru compares it to Comfort of Strangers. They debate the way the film presents bodies and sex and also the way vampires work in this. They compare it to Cronenberg's Crash as well but Crash is a bottom and this is a top. Also, the fucking COMIC SANS OF IT ALL!!! Then they play Have They Seen It?

Episode 16: Let's Scare Jessica to Death30 May 202201:16:17

This week the duo watches one of Josh's all-time faves, 1971's Let's Scare Jessica to Death. From Wikipedia: "Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a 1971 American independent horror film co-written and directed by John Hancock in his directorial debut, and starring Zohra Lampert, Barton Heyman, Gretchen Corbett, and Mariclare Costello. The film depicts the nightmarish experiences of a psychologically fragile woman who comes to believe that another strange, mysterious young woman she has let into her home may actually be a vampire."

But first: Josh is big, blond, and beautiful. He guested on Nightmare on Fierce Street to talk about Friday the 13th Part 2.  Josh plays the tabletop RPG Dread. Josh watched Legend of Hell House and the duo discuss the hotness of Roddy McDowall, Steve Buscemi, etc. Drusilla is hungover from watching Karate Kid films.

Then they get into the feature, which Josh is obsessed with. This was somewhat of a lost film for a long time. They discuss the greatness of 70s horror, the end of flower children, the misleading title of Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Baby Natasha Lyonne, Zorha Lapert's incredible performance, the original marketing of the movie, theater people, the combo of horror subgenres this film belongs to, the chicness of doing grave rubbings, whether or not this is a lesbian vampire film, and then they play Have They Seen It?

Episode 15: David Cronenberg's Crash (w/guest Chelsea Stardust)23 May 202201:08:43

This week Drusilla and Josh watch David Cronenberg's "Crash" with filmmaker Chelsea Stardust, which Wikipedia describes as follows: "Crash is a 1996 psychological thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are strangely aroused by car crashes." Just in time for Mother's Day! But first...

Everybody hates their moms, Chelsea watched "Eyes of Fire" from the All the Haunts Be Ours boxset from Severin films, "Stepford Wives", "Petite Maman", "We're All Going to the World's Fair", "Bunny Lake is Missing", "Kalifornia." Drusilla watched "Arsenic and Old Lace" at The New Beverly, "Reds",  Josh rewatched "American Psycho" and the gang goes off on director Mary Harron and "I Shot Andy Warhol".

Then the gang gets into the feature. James Spader (not David Spade) eats a lot of ass in this. This film was sexually liberating for college-aged Chelsea and Drusilla both. We get a graphic designer's perspective on the credits, they discuss the marriage at the center of the film, they discuss the film's legacy from Cannes and the critical response and cultural homophobia. Francis Ford Coppola is a nerd. Josh worries about people being prudes these days. Rosanna Arquette keeps joints in her leg compartment. Chelsea doesn't think people should lick fresh tattoos, testing films sucks, and then they play Have They Seen It?

Episode 14: A Tale of Two Sisters16 May 202201:03:45

This episode is about the terrifying Korean ghost story by Kim Jee-woon, A Tale of Two Sisters. From Wikipedia: "The film is inspired by a Joseon Dynasty era folktale entitled Janghwa Hongryeon jeon, which has been adapted to film several times. The plot focuses on a recently released patient from a mental institution who returns home with her sister, only to face disturbing events between her stepmother and the ghosts haunting their house—all of which are connected to a dark past in the family's history."

But first! Josh receives a care package for his sickness. Drusilla goes to the super horny Renaissance Pleasure Faire. They discuss Our Flag Means Death, The Northman by Robert Eggers. Drusilla doesn't like Conan the Barbarian, which is insane. The past is TOO MUDDY!!! Does Jabberwocky suck? Josh watched the Blu-ray of LA Plays Itself: The Fred Halsted Collection and WOW. We love Altered Innocence and Anus Films. Josh watches Withnail and I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising. Drusilla sees the Nicholas Cage movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Josh crushes on Pedro Pascal. Dru watched The Crimson Pirate. Everyone in old Hollywood was queer and maybe Burt Lancaster was closeted trans? Jayne Mansfield and Anton Lavey were homies and it's Beltane.

Then they get into the feature. This is the most successful Korean horror film and the first Korean film to be released broadly in American theaters. Of course, Dru did the artwork for Arrow's release of this film. Josh and Dru compare this to the work of David Lynch and describe a horrifying moment. Black Christmas comes up. The duo gets into wallpaper, ghost stories, Lake Mungo and The Haunting of Hill House both reference this movie. Neither host cares for 90s horror movies from America, but the movies from abroad ripped. Steven Soderbergh comes up. Then the duo plays Have They Seen It? before announcing the next film.

From wiki: “Oculus is a 2013 American supernatural psychological horror film co-written, edited, and directed by Mike Flanagan.[7] It is based on his short film Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan,[8] and stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as two young adult siblings who are convinced that an antique mirror is responsible for the death and misfortune that their family had suffered.”

Episode 13: Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore09 May 202201:00:43

This week Drusilla and Josh watched Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore starring sexy, sexy Rupert Everett.

But first! Robert Eggers and hot directors, reclaiming the New Beverly with an Errol Flynn double feature, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, Robin Redbreast, You Won't Be Alone, Josh is ignorant about Macedonia, and then they get into the feature. Dru confesses her love of Angry Video Game Nerd, Josh goes to the video store, the life-changing Videoteque in South Pasadena, "style over substance" is bullshit, City of Lost Children and Jeunet et Caro, keeping your lover's head in a box, Kate McKinnon's doppelganger Anna Fulci, Michele Suovi and Stage Fright, this movie was filmed in a real cemetery with real skeletons, Magritte's The Lovers, little ghost sperms or will o' whisps, impotence and penis surgery, Tim Burton and Pee Wee's Playhouse, hilarious car accidents and motorcycle, the infamous ending of St. Elsewhere and movies that end with being trapped in a snowglobe, and Have They Seen It?

Episode 12: Midsommar (Director's Cut)01 May 202201:17:07

We can have a mainstream arthouse movie, as a treat. Josh and Drusilla catch up after a trying week and catch up on movies. Josh watched Hour of the Wolf before going on a Bergman break. Drusilla saw David Arquette at Bob Baker Day. The duo discusses goth fitness and the Andrew WK renaissance before Josh tells yet another cocaine story. Drusilla watched At Long Last Love, which is good no matter what boomers say, and we love Polly Platt. Josh watched and loved Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched as well as The Greasy Strangler.

And then onto the feature, the director's cut of Ari Aster's Midsommar. Drusilla gives a trigger warning for self-harm and suicide.  Dani (Florence Pugh) has the worst boyfriend of all time. The duo compares Midsommar to Hereditary and also the differences between the director's cut and the theatrical cut. They talk gaslighting and ritual, anthropology and the terrifying old people ceremony, vacations where they weren't wanted, Josh's pagan hillbilly family, meat pies full of pubes, inbreeding, then have a long debate about using disfigured actors in horror films before playing Have They Seen It?

Episode 11: Arrebato25 Apr 202201:03:34

This week Drusilla and Josh talk about the criminally underseen Spanish film Arrebato by Ivan Zulueta. We talk magic and Magic Castle. The Bergman Report continues with Persona and its influence on Lynch and Altman. They also discuss Day of the Beast, playing The Sims on cocaine, Adventures in Babysitting vs Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Days of Wine and Roses and other drunk films, Sid and Nancy, more Shaft, and then get into the feature. This movie is so hard to describe. New wave aesthetics. Josh says Almodovar wrong a million times. This is kind of a vampire movie where you're the victim for watching it. Directors who aren't from film backgrounds or the best. Dru can't see lips. Then they play Have They Seen It?

Episode 9: The Tenant11 Apr 202201:09:49

Boy oh boy! This is a film that Drusilla and Josh do not agree on. Josh goes on a tirade about "elevated horror" in regards to A24 and Ti West's "X". Josh saw his first Bergman film, The Seventh Seal. Drusilla watched The Girl Can't Help It for the first time. The pair discuss John Waters and taking acid at the movies. They discuss the overlap of trash movies and art movies (William Castle and Paul Verhoeven). Then they get into the feature, Roman Polanski's "The Tenant". Drusilla has a history with this movie as a sort of trans narrative. This pick was her revenge for Josh picking Takashi Miike's "Audition." Along the way they discuss Roman Polanskis' dark legacy, his apartment trilogy which includes Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion. They discuss the timeless glamor of Isabelle Adjani of Possession fame. The charm of Shelley Winters. The unfortunate tagline, "no one does it to you like Roman Polanski". Then they debate the merits and flaws of the film before getting into have They Seen It.

Kitty, kitty, kitty! This is a rough one, and also the first movie Drusilla and Josh don't agree on. The duo discusses Takashi Miike's 1999 film, Audition.  This is THE arthouse torture porn movie and an iconic Japanese horror.  Along the way, they discuss irony and The Worst Person in the World, Boy Harsher and The Runner, Hairspray and You're the Worst, insane sculptures, torture porn, Takashi Miike as an edgelord, Audition as a feminist women's revenge film (or not), the inherent scariness of burlap sacks, Tale of Two Sisters, Waiting for Guffman, does the dog die dot com, and Have They Seen It?

Episode 6: Don't Look Now (w/guest Christian Tucci)21 Mar 202201:00:08

Today's guest is artist and writer, Christian Tucci, who brought up the Nicholas Roeg masterpiece Don't Look Now. But before we get into the feature we discuss the new Apple series, Severence, a bunch of spaghetti Westerns, and the Vinegar Syndrome re-release of 1981 slasher, Just Before Dawn.

The trio discusses so much! This is a very sophisticated episode, going into the themes of water and mirrors, but they also manage to discuss the hotness of Donald Sutherland, his son Kiefer, beautiful Julie Christie, the best sex scene of all time, and how shocking the end of this. Long Island Medium comes up and the trio discusses their histories with psychics. Did you know Venice is a character in the movie?

Episode 5: Viy14 Mar 202200:57:04

This week Drusilla and Joshua watched the Soviet/Ukrainian horror film, Viy, which was the first and possibly only Soviet horror film. Josh watched Werewolves Within, which leads to a discussion of little dogs and the people who hate them and/or hate to see them die. Drusilla watched the criminally underrated John Ritter film, Stay Tuned, which leads into problematic Jeffrey Jones and another dog.

The pair briefly acknowledges the situation in Ukraine. Introducing the film requires a little discussion about Ukraine's place in the USSR and Gogol's history. This is a folkloric pagan horror included in Severin's folk horror boxset, All the Haunts Be Ours. It's kind of like Sondheim's Into the Woods.

The pair does a deep dive on the plot, aesthetic, and legacy with plenty of tangents along the way. Then they play Have They Seen It before signing off, but not before announcing the next movie, 1973's Don't Look Now.

Episode 4: The Hunger07 Mar 202200:57:15

Drusilla watched Mill of the Stone Women and Josh watched Netflix's new Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), which was surprisingly good. The duo discusses the sequels in brief and the general pitfalls of sequels and reboots.

Then they get into the feature which stars Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon, and David Bowie. They discuss the less-than-stellar reviews from the time and how it compares to the 80s vampire films that followed.  Drusilla and Josh go through the narrative, which takes them down tangents like whether or not New York has alleyways and the makeup effects. The studio ruined the ending, maybe.

Finally, Drusilla and Josh play Have They Seen It. They also announce the next feature, which is the Ukrainian horror film, Viy.

Episode 120: The House the Screamed (1969)03 Jun 202401:00:28

Episode 117: The Virgin Spring13 May 202401:09:45

Drusilla discuss Ingmar Bergman’s 1960 classic, The Virgin Spring. From wiki: “The Virgin Spring (Swedish: Jungfrukällan) is a 1960 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman. Set in medieval Sweden, it is a tale about a father's merciless response to the rape and murder of his young daughter. The story was adapted by screenwriter Ulla Isaksson from a 13th-century Swedish ballad, "Töres döttrar i Wänge" ("Töre's daughters in Vänge"). Bergman researched the legend of Per Töre with an eye to an adaptation, considering an opera before deciding on a film version. Given criticism of the historical accuracy of his 1957 film The Seventh Seal, he also invited Isaksson to write the screenplay. Other influences included the 1950 Japanese film Rashomon. Max von Sydow played Töre.”
