| NOSFERATU (2024) | 13 Jan 2025 | 01:26:44 | |
We finally got out to see Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, and though the theater experience was not necessarily the best, we were still thrilled with this rendition of the classic vampire. We talk about the differences between Nosferatu and Dracula, the history of vampire lore, and then dive deep into what's on screen with conversations about the infamous first meeting with Count Orlock, how Eggers explores his own themes, and a lot more. We're also drinking Treehouse Brewing's Your Mosh Cherished Future Memories Are Happening Right Now, a double IPA with Riwaka and Citra hops.
| Festivus Series | CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS | 20 Dec 2024 | 01:10:59 | |
For our final Festivus episode of 2024, we're taking a look at a film we thought we already did for the show: 2004's Christmas with the Kranks! It also happens to be the 20th anniversary of the film. We're talking all things Kranks, including our drinking game, the spirit of community/communism throughout the movie, and the muddled themes about being coerced into the Christmas tradition. We're also drinking Jack's Abby's Cranberry Chaos lager. Approximate timeline 0:00-15:00 Intro 15:00-25:00 Beer talk 25:00-end Christmas with the Kranks We hope you enjoyed our Festivus series this year, and we'll be back with more episodes of random cult films in 2025. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, yada yada yada.
| Saxon Samhain (2) CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE | 27 Sep 2024 | 01:18:57 | |
Also known as Cannibal in the Streets, we're talking about John Saxon's contribution to cannibal film with a look at this PTSD-turned-cannibal-virus film. It's a strange concoction from Italian director Antonio Margheriti and we discuss how the PTSD element works, the inclusion of the kind of icky romance, the various cannibal gore effects, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Whitman Brewing's Festbier AND their Oktoberfest! Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro 8:00-15:00 Festbier 15:00-50:00 Cannibal Apocalypse 50:00-55:00 Oktoberfest 55:00-end More Cannibal Apocalypse! Continuing Saxon Samhain all Halloween season!
| Episode 211: THE BATMAN | 22 Apr 2022 | 01:26:58 | |
Finally, we were able to see The Batman thanks to it streaming on HBO Max and we've gotta say, we were pleasantly surprised to be completely enamored with the film. Both of us have strong Batman feelings, but Matt Reeves' film is the best of all worlds. It's gritty, grim, and smart; it compiles many different elements of Batman and Bruce Wayne; and it ends unexpectedly, with the Batman learning something about himself. We talk about all this and more on an extended episode. Also, we're drinking Beer Tree Brewing Co.'s Layered: Mango, Coconut, Granola, Vanilla Parfait Fruited Sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-9:00 Intro Coming soon: Difficult Films month!
| Episode 210: Easter Resurrection Sunday | CRITTERS 2: THE MAIN COURSE | 15 Apr 2022 | 01:15:49 | |
What better way to blaspheme the requel of Jesus Christ than to celebrate with Critters 2: The Main Course, a sequel directed by Mick Garris that sees the Crites resuming their attack on a small town, this time on Easter! While neither of us are huge fans of the Critters series, we certainly make it known why this movie falls short of more likely resembles a Leprechaun sequel - we talk the bounty hunters, the Easter setting, the lack of critters attacks, and more! We're also drinking Fiddlehead's Aetherium White Ale and making jokes about the resurrection. Approximate timeline 0:00-13:00 Intro Next up, The Batman and 3 hours of our life.
| Episode 209: AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON | 08 Apr 2022 | 01:20:48 | |
We've got some time to kill before our Easter episode so we thought, why not cover An American Werewolf in London? The movie recently got a new 4K UHD release from Arrow Video and for good reason; it's one of the best contemporary werewolf movies. We talk about John Landis' foray into horror, the transformations, the differences between wolfmen and werewolves, the downer ending, and a whole lot more! We also have Boddington's English Pub Ale on the show, for obvious reasons. Approximate timeline 0:00-15:00 Intro Next episode: Easter massacres with Critters 2
| Episode 208: SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME | 25 Mar 2022 | 01:23:05 | |
Finally we get to cover Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film we've wanted to do for some time. Now that it's getting its home video release, we get caught up on all the Peter Parker antics including the multiversal traversal that happens in this film. We talk about how much fun it is to get all of the universes together, why Spider-Man works even with its multiple supervillains, the usage of Dr. Strange, and a whole lot more. Also, we're drinking Sloop Brewing Co.'s Nelson + Moteuka Bomb NEIPA! Approximate timeline
| Episode 207: SCREAM (2022) | 18 Mar 2022 | 01:43:09 | |
We thought we were done with the Scream franchise back when we did Scream 4, but we were wrong! We're back to talk about Scream 5 or Scream 2022 or whatever you want to call it, and we have a lot to say! We tackle the new cast, the legacy cast, the richness of Woodsboro, the Ghostface antics, and a whole lot more. Also, we're drinking Weihenstephaner's Vitus weizenbock. Approximate timeline 0:00-15:00 Intro
| Episode 206: St. Patrick's Day Special | LEPRECHAUN: BACK 2 THA HOOD | 11 Mar 2022 | 01:07:06 | |
We finish the Warwick Davis Leprechaun franchise (finally - it feels like we've done an episode almost every year since our start!) with the painful Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood. If you heard our episode on Leprechaun in the Hood, you'll know we were not satisfied with Leprechaun's first trip, so heading back for a second excursion in the hood is another exercise in pain. Honestly, this one is a little bit better, but not by much - there's really not much more that can be done with the franchise, and we talk about that in detail. Hopefully you enjoy spending your St. Paddy's day with us! We're drinking Fidens' Collecting Shinies S'mores stout! Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro Next up - Scream (5)
| Episode 205: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022) | 04 Mar 2022 | 01:12:12 | |
Yikes. We've done the original, we've done the 2000s remake. Now we're back for Netflix's new requel Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which supposedly did so poorly in its test screenings that it did not get a theatrical release. We experience this firsthand with notations about exactly why this movie doesn't work. The excessive wokeness! The aping from Halloween 2018! The unlikable characters! Leatherface plain old having a crappy mask! Ultimately, we land on the movie is fine, watchable, but ultimately not good. Also we're drinking Artisinal Brew Works' Birria di Capriccio Italian Pilsener. Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro Next up: Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood.
| Episode 204: THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR | 25 Feb 2022 | 01:16:35 | |
Happy Black History Month! To celebrate, we're taking a look at perhaps the most important blaxploitation film in cinematic history with Ivan Dixon. We're happy to discuss the Black movement in the film involving guerilla warfare learned by the CIA, tokenism in the workforce and still at play today, identity politics, Herbie Hancock's score, the voice of Black writers, and a whole lot more. This episode may be one of our most liberal discourses. We're also drinking Ommegang Brewing Company's Keep It Crunchy Granola Stout! Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro Next up: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Netflix requel.
| Episode 203: MURPHY'S LAW | 18 Feb 2022 | 01:09:05 | |
We've updated our cover image to Bronson, so why not cover a film of his as well? We dive into Murphy's Law, a Cannon release from the mid '80s when Bronson was basically keeping the company afloat with his pictures. Here, we discuss the buddy comedy elements at play with Bronson's co-star Kathleen Wilhoite, get down to the ditty (at the beginning of the episode), and discuss just how generic this movie's villain motives are. We're also drinking Big Ditch Brewing Company's Pineapple American IPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro Catch us next week for some Black History Month Blaxploitation!
| Episode 202: HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U (Valentine's Day Version) | 11 Feb 2022 | 01:15:31 | |
We wanted to do a Valentine's Day episode and we picked Happy Death Day 2U misunderstanding that it is not, in fact, set on Valentine's Day but just released around that time. No matter, we make it a Valentine's Day episode anyway by rating the movie on scale of Turkish Angora cats and hearts, as well as discussing our love lives. Oh yeah, we also talk about the been there-done that Happy Death Day 2U, which transitions from slasher to sci-fi with its dimensional travel. We're also drinking Naragansett's Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout! Have a little love this Valentine's Day! Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro
| 300th Episode Celebration with THEY LIVE! | 20 Sep 2024 | 01:33:18 | |
We've hit a milestone at 300 episodes and we wanted to celebrate! In keeping with the pattern of previous milestone episodes, we're covering another big John Carpenter film with They Live! Also join us for a brief retrospective as we look back on some of our favorite episodes of recent past. Thanks for sticking with us and we hope to be back for another 300! We're also drinking Sloop Brewing's Pineapple Juice IPA. Approximate timeline 0:00-20:00 Intro and retrospective 20:00-30:00 Beer talk 30:00-end They Live Next up: back to Saxon Samhain!
| Episode 201: THE FRENCH DISPATCH | 28 Jan 2022 | 01:35:01 | |
While Wes Anderson movies might seem out of our wheelhouse, we have done a few in the past and we truly enjoy his wry aesthetics. We've been meaning to check out The French Dispatch for some time and now that we have, we can't stop talking about it. Despite the meta commentary asking us to stop overanalyzing, we certainly do just that in this episode, breaking down each of the three shorts in this anthology, the aesthetics, the great cast, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Fifth Hammer Brewing's Solar Circuit wit with lime, orange, and habanero! Approximate timeline
| 200th Episode Celebration with ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK | 14 Jan 2022 | 01:43:34 | |
WE DID IT! We've hit 200 episodes and we thought the perfect way to compile all of our hard work would be to pick a film that summarizes all of the things we've been working on in the past 7 years. So Escape from New York felt like the perfect amalgamation - action, Kurt Russell, neo-western ideas, Lee Van Cleef, Tom Atkins, a celebration of John Carpenter (who also has a birthday very soon!). We have a lot of fun discussing the film, loving the soundtrack, and ultimately just documenting our overall enjoyment of the movie. We also run down some of our best episodes in a quick retrospective of our podcast! We hope you enjoy celebrating our 200 episodes, and we hope to be around for at least 200 more. Approximate timeline
| Episode 199: CREEP | 07 Jan 2022 | 01:01:52 | |
Back to business with a new episode of the podcast - of course, we're not following a theme anymore so we wanted to cover our first found-footage movie on the show. We're in good hands with 2014's Creep starring Mark Duplass as a deranged guy who stalks our first-person perspective victim. This movie gets around all of the contextual issues found-footage films normally have trouble with, and we discuss what Creep does right to put it ahead of the pack. We're also drinking - random stuff! Including Kojiki Japanese whisky. Approximate timeline 0:00-9:00 Intro Thanks for listening! Write to us at bloodandblackrumpodcast@gmail.com to suggest films.
| Episode 198: Festivus Series | HOME ALONE | 24 Dec 2021 | 01:10:59 | |
Merry Christmas Eve! We close out our Festivus Series for 2021 with one of the most iconic holiday films, 1990's Home Alone! This John Hughes-written classic has always been one of Ryne's favorites, and we basically just discuss our favorite moments from the movie in one long dialogue about its greatness! You'll hear our favorite lines, traps, and more, and we hope you enjoy our breakdown of why the police officer in this movie has poor priorities. Also, we're drinking Drekker Brewing Company's BRAAAAAAAAINS Blueberry+Lemon double smoothie sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro Thanks for listening to our Festivus Series this year. We'll back soon with episodes on Spider-Man: No Way Home, Scream, and more in the new year, along with our 200th episode!
| Episode 197: Festivus Series | CHRISTMAS EVIL | 17 Dec 2021 | 01:00:46 | |
We continue our Festivus Series in 2021 with Christmas Evil, a film that Martin really didn't like. But that's okay, because Ryne really digs it, so we get a good discussion going about what works, what doesn't work, and why some people hate it and some people really love it. Christmas Evil is a weird movie, and it takes some appreciation to get past some of the rawer editing and absurdities. However, we see it from both sides, making for a good dialogue about the film. We hope you feel the same! We're drinking District 96's Sleeveless Flannel Winter Ale! Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro Check back all holiday season for new weekly Christmas episodes!
| Episode 196: Festivus Series | BETTER WATCH OUT | 10 Dec 2021 | 01:16:00 | |
This week we're tackling Better Watch Out (not to be confused with our episode on Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 3: Better Watch Out!) for Festivus! This one's a lot of fun - it takes one part Scream, one part Home Alone, and a bunch of small elements from other horror movies (I'm calling out Black Christmas too) and throws them together for a humorous but also brutal romp that has moments of greatness. Listen in to see what we thought of this holiday horror! Also, we're drinking Southern Tier's Frosted Sugar Cookie Imperial Ale! On this episode, we have the pleasure of premiering a promo for The Cult Film Companion. It's another movie podcast like us, but with an even greater emphasis on covering cult films! You can catch the promo at around 11:30 in the show, and do us a favor and head to their podcast page and join their Facebook group! Podcast page: https://shows.acast.com/the-cult-film-companion-podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/566867227341241/ Approximate timeline 0:00-11:30 Intro Check back all holiday season for new episodes. Next up: Christmas Evil!
| Episode 195: Festivus Series | BLACK CHRISTMAS (2006) | 03 Dec 2021 | 01:18:37 | |
Festivus Series 2021 starts now! We're returning to the lore of Billy and Agnes in our look at Black Christmas (sometimes stylized Black Xmas) from 2006, a remake of the original film that throws in quite a few odes and tries to give a LOT more backstory. That's not entirely successful, and we talk about why. But we also discuss the holiday festivities, the themes, the cookie-cutter protagonists, and a whole lot more... and we come to a conclusion why we don't return to this movie each year. Also, we're drinking Ommegang's Everything Nice strong blonde ale, perfect for the festive season. Approximate timeline Check back all month long as we cover some holiday classics (and some not-so-classics)!
| Episode 194: Thanksgiving Special | BLOOD RAGE | 19 Nov 2021 | 01:11:08 | |
We finally take on one of the most famous horror Thanksgiving movies: Blood Rage! We both agree that this is like a lower-budget, Thanksgiving version of Silent Night, Deadly Night, just way less effective. We talk about the randomness of the movie, the feeling that a lot of this was ad libbed, the gory violence, the interminable length, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Ommegang/Firestone Walker's Neon Giants NEIPA collaboration! Approximate timeline 0:00 - 10:00 Intro Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
| Episode 193: So Creepy It's Carpenter IX | HALLOWEEN KILLS | 29 Oct 2021 | 01:22:47 | |
Our final episode for 2021's Halloween season is a cheat with the John Carpenter thing; he didn't direct Halloween Kills, but he did contribute the characters and film score. But of course we had to cover this sequel to the 2018's requel, and we take a lot of time to channel our frustrations at this follow-up. We enjoyed 2018's Halloween quite a bit, and while we did have fun with Halloween Kills, we spend most of this episode discussing the many areas it goes wrong - and then try to cover a few places we really liked. Hope you enjoyed our series, check back with us in a couple of weeks for some holiday podcasting! Oh yeah, we're drinking Guinness' Nitro Cold Brew Coffee beer. Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro
| Episode 192: So Creepy It's Carpenter VIII | THE WARD | 23 Oct 2021 | 01:00:31 | |
Our final (?) episode in our So Creepy It's Carpenter series is on Carpenter's last (?) directorial film The Ward! Ryne thought he had seen this before but he was mistaken; so we both experience this psychological thriller for the first time and discuss how middle of the road it truly is. In fact, it's so difficult to talk about because of how aggressively mediocre it is. However, we give it a shot! Also, we're drinking Genesee's Cranberry-Orange Kellerbier. Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro We have one more Carpenter-related surprise for you next week, so tune in for our Halloween finale!
| Saxon Samhain (1) THE EVIL EYE | 13 Sep 2024 | 01:13:55 | |
We're kicking off the Halloween season this year with our new series, Saxon Samhain, where we take a look at various John Saxon horror movies! First up is The Evil Eye, which gets confusing because this Mario Bava film has two versions. We're specifically talking about the American AIP version that features a different ending, different score, and a couple of edits; we also do talk a little about the Italian version The Girl Who Knew Too Much. On the Saxony scale, this one scores a 4. Listen on to find out what we thought! We're also drinking Athletic Brewing's non-alcoholic Oktoberfest. Approximate timeline 0:00-13:00 Intro 13:00-20:00 Beer talk 20:00-end The Evil Eye More Saxon soon, but up next is our 300th episode!
| Episode 191: So Creepy It's Carpenter VII | VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1995) | 15 Oct 2021 | 00:57:10 | |
We're nearing the end of our Carpenter series, but that doesn't mean we won't go out with a bang! In Village of the Damned, we take a look at the creepy kid flick based off a prior movie that was based off a novel. While we note that this doesn't exactly feel like a Carpenter film, it does a good enough job of getting the eerie and the moralism across. We talk about Christopher Reeve, empathy, and Kirstie Alley being here, plus we get in a couple nods to Mark Hamill. Sorry about the clicks and keyboard clacks at the beginning - couldn't edit that out as we were doing research! Also, we're drinking Beer Tree's Trippy Tree Mango, Pineapple, and Coconut fruited sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro Continue to tune in as we cover more Carpenter hits and misses!
| Episode 190: So Creepy It's Carpenter VI | BODY BAGS | 08 Oct 2021 | 01:14:27 | |
We're over halfway through our So Creepy It's Carpenter series and we're tackling another surprisingly great Carpenter film with Body Bags. Shot for Showtime and meant to lead into an anthology TV series, Carpenter provides three very different stories in this 90 minute film, bookended by a great framing story starring Carpenter himself. Carpenter directs two out of the three, with Tobe Hooper providing the last short, and we discuss all three in their entirety. Oh, and we're drinking Ommegang's Hopstate New York IPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-9:00 Intro Subscribe to us to keep up with our Carpenter shenanigans all Halloween season!
| Episode 189: So Creepy It's Carpenter V | PRINCE OF DARKNESS | 01 Oct 2021 | 01:13:49 | |
This is one of Ryne's favorite Carpenter movies, and we give Prince of Darkness some good treatment on the show by covering the score, the creepy factor, the overwhelming foreboding elements, and a whole lot more. Is it so good, so bad, or so creepy? Listen to the episode to find out! We're also drinking Captain Lawrence/Snyder's of Hanover's Snyder Bier Pretzel Marzen! Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro Tune in all Halloween season for more Carpenter creepy coverage!
| Episode 188: So Creepy It's Carpenter IV | CHRISTINE | 24 Sep 2021 | 01:15:37 | |
Continuing our So Creepy It's Carpenter Halloween series, we tackle a surprisingly successful offfering from Carpenter, and also one of the best Stephen King film adaptations: Christine. This is a tough story to adapt for the big screen because of its limited scope and with the primary antagonist being an inanimate object. However, we talk about the successful use of emotional stakes and tension throughout to keep things interesting even for a 110 minute long film. We also discuss Carpenter's excellent theme, the '80s sociopathic bully antics, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Fidens' The Butcher double IPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-13:00 Intro Join us all Halloween season for more Carpenter films! Next up: Prince of Darkness.
| Episode 187: So Creepy It's Carpenter III | GHOSTS OF MARS | 18 Sep 2021 | 01:07:34 | |
Hey, we knew we'd have to do the crappy stuff too when we were doing a Carpenter series for Halloween. That brings us to Ghosts of Mars, probably Carpenter's worst film. It has a lot of poor decisions that lead to a really boring, awful movie - and quite possibly the lowest rating Ryne has ever given on the show. We talk about the wipes and fades (you know what we mean), the terrible neo-noir dialogue, have a disagreement about the choreography, and so much more. Be ready to laugh with us about this turkey. Oh yeah, we're also drinking Druthers Brewing Co.'s Oktoberfest! Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro Tune in all Halloween season long for more Carpenter film coverage!
| Episode 186: So Creepy It's Carpenter II | THE FOG | 10 Sep 2021 | 01:06:28 | |
Continuing our Halloween season spent with John Carpenter's filmography, we turn to the moody mistiness of 1980's The Fog, one of Carpenter's better films and yet still falling somewhere in the middle of his best output. We're disappointed with the lack of Tom Atkins mustache; we query whether Jamie Lee Curtis or Adrienne Barbeau tops the hotness meter; we dish out some fire at the founders of Antonio Bay who couldn't stand to live even a mile away from a leper colony. And we have a lot of fun talking about the film over the course of an hour, and we hope you enjoy our coverage. Oh yeah, we're drinking Leinenkugel's Collaboration Lager, and amber lager in collab with Hofbräu München! Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro Tune in all Halloween season for more Carpenter faves (and not-so-faves)!
| Episode 185: So Creepy It's Carpenter I | VAMPIRES | 03 Sep 2021 | 01:12:50 | |
All Halloween season we will be bringing you the So Creepy It's Carpenter series, a look at John Carpenter's filmography including both the good and the bad. For our first spotlight, we start right in the middle of that divide with Vampires from 1998, one of Carpenter's better late-career movies. We talk about the KNB effects, James Wood (an asshole), the Carpenter western-tinged soundtrack, the lack of a directorial signature, and more! No specific beer talk this week, it's just good to be back again (remotely). Approximate Timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro Check in with us weekly all Halloween season for new Carpenter flick episodes.
| Episode 184: Red Hot '80s Action Summer IV | STRIKE COMMANDO | 30 Jul 2021 | 01:13:53 | |
Red Hot '80s Action summer is sweating along and we are taking a look at Reb Brown's masterpiece, his opus, Strike Commando. If you've never seen the film, think First Blood: Part II but with a lot lower budget and with some extremely interesting dialogue choices. We're having a laugh at the whole plot, admiring Reb Brown's muscles, and yelling "JAKODAAAA!" a lot. Expect some good fun at the film's expense here. Also, we're drinking Ommegang's Neon Neon Rainbows Double NEIPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro
| Episode 183: Red Hot '80s Action Summer III | INVASION U.S.A. | 16 Jul 2021 | 01:11:01 | |
On our new episode for Red Hot '80s Action Summer, we are talking about the inestimable Chuck Norris in one of his classic terrorist shoot-em-up films, Invasion U.S.A. We touch on the sheer ridiculousness of the film, Chuck's fabulous red mullet, the inferiority of the US National Guard, and the homoerotic undertones at play here. We're also drinking Ommegang's Sleeveless Tea! Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro
| Episode 182: Red Hot '80s Action Summer II | POLICE STORY | 03 Jul 2021 | 01:16:36 | |
Continuining our hot '80s action summer, we're taking a look at perhaps Jackie Chan's finest film Police Story - subbed, not dubbed! Here, we marvel at Chan's ingenuity with the stunts while also commenting on the simplicity of the film's plot. We talk Hong Kong drugs, the various stunt sequences, rate our favorites, and also comment on the odd inclusion of some misogyny in Chan's character. Also, we're drinking DuClaw Brewing's Lil Sour Me America, just in time for July 4th! Approximate Timeline 0:00-13:00 Intro Next up on Red Hot '80s Action Summer: Invasion U.S.A!
| Red Hot '90s Action Summer (4) SPEED | 30 Aug 2024 | 01:10:28 | |
We come to the conclusion of our Red Hot '90s Action Summer coverage in rapid pace with Speed, possibly one of the best action films of the entire decade. Maybe it's our nostalgia talking, but we're still in love with this bomb-on-a-bus flick. We talk about Keanu Reeves' flat delivery, the excellent Jeff Daniels, losing your head on a subway, the physics of busses jumping gaps, and a lot more. We're also drinking Genesee Brewing Company's Black Cherry Vanilla Kellerbier! Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro 10:00-16:00 Beer talk 16:00-end Speed We'll be starting our Halloween celebrations with Saxon Samhain soon!
| Episode 181: Red Hot '80s Action Summer I | PREDATOR | 18 Jun 2021 | 01:15:21 | |
We're starting our Red Hot '80s Action Summer off with a jungle-tinged bang! Arnie's quotable film Predator is on the docket, and as we rewatched this John McTiernan action/sci-fi/slasher hybrid we couldn't help but feel disappointed with our rose-colored glasses view of this nostalgic classic, because it just doesn't hold up as well as we thought. We talk about those criticisms and joke about the soundtrack, the dialogue, the mystical Native American trope, and which form of Predator we'd rather... well, you know. We're also drinking Beer Tree Brewing's Layered: Maple, Brown Sugar, Blueberry Parfait Sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro
| Episode 180: THE WICKER MAN (1973) | 04 Jun 2021 | 01:11:35 | |
It's summertime, and of course we need to visit the island of Summerisle for a quick jaunt to a cult led by Christopher Lee. We talk about the excellent casting in the film, the heavy religious themes, Britt Eklund's booty dance, the missing deleted scene, Lee's hair(piece?), and the shocking finale. We're definitely fans of this crazy slow-burn movie, and I think you can hear in this episode. Let us know what you think! Approximate Timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro
| Episode 179: SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW | 21 May 2021 | 01:17:52 | |
We've done every other Saw film (1-7 in a marathon), so it was inevitable that we'd have to head out to the theater to see Spiral: From the Book of Saw. And for the most part, we liked this one okay - it's definitely better than Jigsaw, though its writers are the same, and Chris Rock is really doing the best he can with what he's got. The traps are cool, but there are still some major issues. Listen to the whole thing and let us know what you thought of this new reboot of the series! A note: we recorded remotely (for the last time) and we did have some issues near the end of the recording where the remote recording cut out some content and caused some skips and pauses. For the record, Ryne rated this a 7/10 creepy little marionette dolls. We're also drinking Founders' All Day Vacay Session Wheat Ale. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro
| Episode 178: MORTAL KOMBAT (2021) | 30 Apr 2021 | 01:23:38 | |
We're back! We took a long hiatus, but one thing helped us decide to come back: the new Mortal Kombat reboot. Being one of Martin's favorite franchises, we just had to take a look at the new R-rated film from director Simon McQuoid. Expect some nostalgic waxing about the original games, discussion on the film's storyline, groaning about this being more like an introductory lead-up to a sequel, and more! It's good to be back. On this show, we have Beer Tree Brew Co.'s Virtuosity - Blood Orange, Mango, and Marshmallow, as well as Artisanal Brew Works' Warheads Extreme Sour Watermelon Hard Seltzer. | Episode 177: Festivus Series | JACK FROST (1997) | 30 Dec 2020 | 01:05:27
Our finale for Festivus Series 2020 comes with a caveat: it's a bad movie. The 1997 slasher movie Jack Frost does just about everything wrong, and it's not even so bad it's good; it does have, though, a quick Shannon Elizabeth nude scene, so that's something. We talk about the really lazy snowman design, the bad snow, the ridiculous genetic material science, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Beer Tree's Virtuosity passionfruit dragonfruit marshmallow double NEIPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro Edit: there was an issue with sequencing that threw the later part of the track off, this has been fixed as of 12/30.
| Episode 176: Festivus Series | SCROOGED | 21 Dec 2020 | 01:00:36 | |
Sorry our episode is a little late, we had remote technical difficulties due to weather. We're talking the Christmas classic Scrooged for this episode, A Christmas Carol for the '80s which sort of acts as a metacommentary for the Charles Dickens tale. We talk about Bill Murray's asshole character, Bobcat Goldthwaite as a disgruntled employee, our favorite ghost, and of course the value of 5 pounds of veal. We're also drinking a couple different beers on the show!

| Episode 175: Festivus Series | BLACK CHRISTMAS (2019) | 11 Dec 2020 | 01:37:26 | |
We had meant to cover this last Christmas and for multiple reasons, it just didn't work out. But on this episode we take a look at the most controversial remake of Black Christmas, the Sophia Takal version released by Blumhouse in 2019. This film got a lot of hate from the people that it criticizes: straight white males. It's no surprise, since it wears its feminist leanings on its sleeve, but this is a pretty inoffensive film for people to level their ire at. And it's not really that bad - it has some homages to the original film (and other horror movies), it has competent direction and some iconic cinematography, and its first 50 minutes are a treat. But we talk about where it goes wrong and what really got our goat (hint: fake snow). Remote episode, sorry for any issues.

| Episode 174: Festivus Series | SILENT NIGHT | 04 Dec 2020 | 01:13:26 | |
It is Festivus time once again! We've got four weeks of... ahem... great films on the way, and to start things off, we finally get to end our longstanding marathon of the Silent Night, Deadly Night series with the loose remake Silent Night! This is definitely not the same film as the original though it has a number of references. We talk about the poor man's actors within the film and the surprising amount of known names, Malcolm McDowell's performance, the interesting special effects, the incredibly dumb backstory, and more! Again, recorded remotely so apologies for any weird audio issues.

| Episode 173: FIRST BLOOD | 26 Nov 2020 | 01:14:38 | |
Our intention was to do a Thanksgiving movie for the special occasion, but First Blood ain't it. Instead, it's more of a Christmas-adjacent film, but we're not going to let that stop us from enjoying this Stallone classic. We talk about the bike chases, the PTSD, the Stallone memeable monologues, exposition dumps, and a conservative's worst nightmare. We're also drinking Druthers' Apple Cranberry Kolsch, perfect for the season!

| Episode 172: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE | 14 Nov 2020 | 01:21:08 | |
As a tribute to Sean Connery, we decided to tackle our first James Bond movie for the show, and Martin decided that the best one would be From Russia with Love. We talk about the spy plot, this Bond caper's tendency to lean serious rather than over-the-top, its context in the history of the Bond series, and a whole lot more! On this show, we're drinking Saranac's new Winter Warmer.

| Red Hot '90s Action Summer (3) CON AIR | 28 Aug 2024 | 01:05:59 | |
Continuing our vehicle-obsessed action film coverage, we're talking about the convicts-on-a-plane flick Con Air starring Nic Cage. Here, he's given no other objective than to be himself, and we talk about the over-the-top ridiculousness of this movie, the saccharine sentimentality, attack chopper-trained DEA agents, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Bolton Landing Brewing's Big Squeeze double IPA. Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro 7:00-15:00 Beer talk 15:00-end Con Air Next up: Speed
| Episode 171: Reanimated VIII | SHAUN OF THE DEAD | 30 Oct 2020 | 01:18:44 | |
We complete our Reanimated series by going full circle with zombie films. We've tackled the serious types of zombie films out there, and now we're taking a look at a parody of a zombie film with Shaun of the Dead. A classic in every sense and oft-quoted from our school days, the film effectively encapsulates a loving ode to zombie films by playing up their ridiculousness. We're talking our favorite scenes and quotes, the various zombie elements at play, the surprising seriousness of the climax, and a lot more. We also have Genesee Brewing's Twelve Horse Ale on the show.

We're throwing things back for a classic zombie film in this episode of the Reanimated series! We're talking about the first official zombie film White Zombie with Bela Lugosi, and of course we have to talk about the zombie/slave element, the acting, how the film holds up in contemporary context, and a whole lot more! Also, we are drinking Dogfish Head's Campfire Amplifier stout!

| Episode 169: Reanimated VI | TRAIN TO BUSAN | 16 Oct 2020 | 01:10:51 | |
We've already covered fast-moving infected for the Reanimated series, but this time they can actually be defined as zombies in Train to Busan. This Korean blockbuster from 2016 passed by both of us when it released, so we get to experience this one for the first time. We talk about the rules of the infection in the film, the comedy and emotional elements, the naivety of its characters, zombie effects, and a whole lot more! We're also talking Decadent Brewing's Apple Cinnamon Doughnut IPA.
