www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Mort Fertel is a serial entrepreneur who started his first business at 18 years old. He has a private equity portfolio that consists of SudShare, 2 other businesses, and real estate holdings. He graduated from the Wharton School of Business, and, during a short time when he thought he might be a corporate guy, worked on Wall Street for Bankers Trust Company. Mort is also an author, creator of the first online relationship renewal system (2004), and the subject of Back from the Brink, a documentary written and directed by Toroes Thomas. Now a grandfather, success for Mort means making a difference. And SudShare makes a difference by allowing customers to enjoy life and Sudsters (washers) to have their own work-from-home business. Mort loves working with his family to revolutionize the laundry business. Mort was on this show back on episode #228, when he was discussing his book Marriage Fitness, so if you haven’t heard that one check out that episode too. In this episode, he’s here to talk about his new company Sudshare.

  • Personal story of Sudshare and how it came to be
  • What it was like to create a family business
  • Tips for families who want to create a business together
  • How Sudshare works
  • What Sudshare costs and how it compares to other laundry services

162-When a Biological Parent is Absent19 Feb 201800:19:30

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

There are many reasons why a family may find themselves in the position of raising a child without the other biological parent. There could be a death, therefore leaving someone a widow or widower, left to raise their kids alone. Unfortunately, there are lots of absent parents out there because those parents have made a choice to abandon their kids, leaving the other parent to pick up the pieces. There are parents who are serving time in jail. Others who serve in the military. Then there are others who live out of state, so perhaps they are involved, but only minimally. Regardless of the cause, the children can suffer greatly. There are ways to help a child through this, as well as ways to cope as the sole parent.

160-Valentines Special, with Erik Newton of Together05 Feb 201800:40:29

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Erik Newton is a former family law attorney who describes himself as someone who’s “been through a thousand divorces and still believes in love.” Ushering couples through divorce wasn’t easy for Erik, a romantic from birth, but it turned out to be the ideal medium through which to understand the entire life cycle of a relationship. As a result, Erik has a unique, real-world comprehension of what makes one marriage thrive and another fall apart.

During his time as an attorney, Erik racked up a few accolades: He founded a successful law journal, built the largest and fastest-growing family law firm in the Bay Area, and was named a Super Lawyer three years running. He also teamed up with a psychologist friend to lead premarital courses for couples, hoping to give them the skills they’d need to stay out of his office. Ultimately, his calling to help couples build healthy relationships superseded his legal career, and he decided to dedicate himself full-time to creating a place couples could go for information, inspiration, and a big dose of truth. That’s when Together was born.

Erik joins me to talk about

  • His personal story
  • His business, Together, and it’s mission
  • The “work” involved in relationships
  • His experiences working with couples over the years
  • His own relationship
  • And much more

158-Listener Questions22 Jan 201800:20:19

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

I’m answering some tough questions sent in by listeners. First, a woman who says her grown stepkids are jealous of her, and she’s having trouble with that around holidays. Next, a question about what to do with old albums and keepsakes, especially when moving to a new place with a new partner. Then, a listener concerned about the drama the ex wife brings to her relationship. Last, a meddling mother in law who chooses the ex wife over her own son.

If you want to send in a question or topic idea for a future show, please email me! All feedback and questions are welcome!

157-How to stand in your power15 Jan 201800:22:45

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Do you stand in your power? Unfortunately, many of us do not know how to do this. Standing in your power means that you honor yourself. It means that you know what you want and do not want, you know what you like and do not like. You stand strong for what you believe in and desire, and you don’t back down from your beliefs and desires just to please other people. You become the person responsible for your own happiness.

Use my 5 step process to help you finally become the person you want to be, the person who stands in their power. You will find freedom and happiness if you can master them!

  1. Pause
  2. Think
  3. Feel
  4. Trust
  5. Act

146-Working with difficult and uncooperative exes!16 Oct 201700:21:48

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

We all have exes, and many of us are dealing with exes who are difficult and uncooperative. Since there is not much we can do to change who they are or what they act like, we can only focus on ourselves. There are things we can do to make these interactions more pleasant.

  • Work on better communication
  • Treat your relationship with the ex as a business transaction
  • Seek help from your ex's family members or friends
  • Respond without reacting
  • Don't fight back
  • Don't seek revenge
  • Don't use the kids as messengers
  • Don't try to change your ex
  • Find support for yourself
  • Stay consistent

141-Storm update, and a special song by Songfinch!11 Sep 201700:10:08

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Because of hurricane Irma, there is not a topic this week. My family and I have been preparing for this storm, as it is threatening to hit my state of Florida.

In the meantime, listen to my special song by songfinch, that was created for my bonus children! See the lyrics below!

Sometimes reminiscing

Feels like yesterday to me

When you met 10 years ago

With your dad at Mikkey D's

And since then you've gotten close

Happy she could watch you grow

She could say she loves you both

But then you already know

Already know, no love is lost

From 2 young kids to young adults

The whole time with you has been awesome

Wouldn't trade it for a second

It's a blessing

When she step into the house and see you all

Always know that you can call

Anytime you need to talk

So she can say she proud of both of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Now Shawnie is sincere

A good heart that makes you cheer

He loves music, he loves football

Pick a concert he'll appear

And he looks just like his dad

Makes you smile from ear to ear

Your stepmoms your biggest fan

Just in case that wasn't clear

Madison she's super driven

Super strong, in it to win it

A competitive cheerleader

No one's better

When she goes for something

Both got hearts of gold

And their talents all their own

Your stepmom loves how you've grown

And turned the house into a home

Here's her way to say she's proud of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song
