Mini Ep. 79: Points of Control06 Nov 202500:09:05

In this week's mini-episode, we discuss how the torso and levers become points of control. With torso control, we clamp or hook onto our opponent's torso so we can hold them in position or rotate around them. With lever control, we use our opponent's arms, legs, and/or head to create leverage. Attacking a single lever usually affords more force, whereas attacking multiple levers simultaneously usually affords more control.

Mini Ep 74: Center of Gravity02 Oct 202500:05:11

In this week's mini-episode, we discuss center of gravity: your body's "tipping point" of balance. Your center of gravity is around 56% of the way up your body (around your pelvis) when standing upright, but moves as your body moves. Understanding your center of gravity is key to preventing it from being used against you. With practice, your center of gravity can even be a weapon.

Mini Ep. 30: Predictable Responses28 Nov 202400:07:57

In this week's mini-episode we explain predictable responses.  This mental model teaches us that each technique has a series of common reactions, and knowing these reactions allows you to anticipate and "mind read" your opponent.  In many ways, knowing a technique's predictable responses can be just as important as knowing the technique itself.

Mini Ep. 29: Alignment Over Position21 Nov 202400:08:36

In this week's mini-episode we explain alignment over position.  This is a refinement on the classic "position over submission" concept using Rob Biernacki's alignment framework.  It teaches us that having good alignment (base, posture, and structure) is more important than having any particular position.

Mini Ep. 28: Position Over Submission14 Nov 202400:08:07

In this week's mini-episode we explain one of the most commonly discussed mental models in Jiu-Jitsu: position over submission.  This concept teaches us that it's often better to maintain position than risk losing it by hunting for submissions.  This episode explains the reasoning behind "position over submission," as well as the exceptions.

Mini Ep. 27: Inside vs. Outside Channel Control07 Nov 202400:10:23

In this week's mini-episode we discuss two important and related concepts: inside channel control and outside channel control.  Inside channel control refers to taking the inside route around your opponent's weapons, such as going under or between their legs as you'd do with X guard.  Outside channel control refers to taking the outside route around your opponent's weapons, such as outside hook / de la Riva guard, closed guard, and matrix back takes.

Mini Ep. 26: Crossing the Center31 Oct 202400:07:20

In this week's mini-episode we're talking about crossing the center, an ancient mental model that appears in many martial arts beyond Jiu-Jitsu — and for good reason!  The "center line" refers to an imaginary line running down the middle of your body, where your spine is.  Forcing your opponent to "cross the center," or pass their arm or leg across the center line of their body, is a surefire way to break their posture and structure.

Mini Ep. 25: Hybrid Break Mechanics24 Oct 202400:05:32

In this week's mini-episode we finish our series of discussions on the different types of breaking mechanics in Jiu-Jitsu!  This episode explains hybrid breaks, or submissions that combine multiple breaking mechanics such as linear breaks, rotational breaks, and slicers.  Hybrid breaks are often more powerful than those relying on a single breaking mechanic.

(A note on terminology: a "break" as described here is technically more of a "tear," as you're not breaking bone, you're tearing soft tissue.  However, we'll use the term "break" as it's the more commonly accepted and understood term in Jiu-Jitsu.)

Mini Ep. 24: Slicer Mechanics17 Oct 202400:07:37

In this week's mini-episode we continue our series of discussions on the different types of breaking mechanics in Jiu-Jitsu!  This episode explains slicers, a submission that usually targets the bicep or calf, and discusses why these submissions may be underused due to IBJJF ruleset restrictions.

(A note on terminology: a "break" as described here is technically more of a "tear," as you're not breaking bone, you're tearing soft tissue.  However, we'll use the term "break" as it's the more commonly accepted and understood term in Jiu-Jitsu.)

Mini Ep. 23: Rotational Break Mechanics10 Oct 202400:10:41

In this week's mini-episode we continue our series of discussions on the different types of breaking mechanics in Jiu-Jitsu!  This episode explains rotational breaks like kimuras, omoplatas, and heel hooks.  We also explain the difference between internal and external rotations, and why internal rotations are so powerful.

(A note on terminology: a "break" as described here is technically more of a "tear," as you're not breaking bone, you're tearing soft tissue.  However, we'll use the term "break" as it's the more commonly accepted and understood term in Jiu-Jitsu.)

In this week's mini-episode we discuss compression choke mechanics!  Compression chokes involve squeezing your opponent's chest so tightly that their lungs can't expand to take in air.  They're a bit silly and not high-percentage, but they're still worth knowing about so you don't wind up on the wrong end of someone else's compression choke highlight reel.

Mini Ep. 17: Air Choke Mechanics29 Aug 202400:10:03

In this week's mini-episode we discuss air choke mechanics!  Air chokes involve cutting off your opponent's ability to breathe by either compressing their trachea ("windpipe") or covering their mouth.  Air chokes often don't act as quickly as blood chokes, but there are ways to speed them up by triggering the gag reflex.  We also talk about why air chokes are legitimate techniques and should not be thought of as "dirty."

Mini Ep. 16: Blood Choke Mechanics22 Aug 202400:09:09

In this week's mini-episode we discuss blood choke mechanics!  This is the concept behind all chokes we'd classify as "carotid restraints," where compression on the carotid arteries cuts off blood flow to the brain.  We'll discuss the simple "triangle around the head" concept that helps tighten all blood chokes including rear naked chokes, collar chokes, triangle chokes, and head and arm chokes.

Mini Ep. 15: Dominant Angles15 Aug 202400:08:15

In this week's mini-episode we discuss dominant angles!  The concept of dominant angles is more complicated than "being behind or beside your opponent."  It's more about positioning your body relative to theirs such that their arms, legs, and other weapons can't come into play.

Mini Ep. 14: Countergripping08 Aug 202400:07:38

In this week's mini-episode, we discuss countergripping!  There are three ways to counter a grip:

  1. breaking the grip (stripping their fingers),
  2. inverting the grip (pummeling to make the grip our own), or
  3. changing the angle (which can render the grip useless).

In general, breaking the grip is the least efficient option, changing the angle is the most efficient, and inverting the grip is in between.

Note that we want our grips to be dominant grips, meaning that they give us more control than they give to our opponent.

In this week's mini-episode, we discuss one of Steve's favorite mental models: grips dictate position!  As the name implies, whoever wins the grip fight in Jiu-Jitsu often dictates the position.  Focus on winning the grip fight before attempting to advance position or secure a submission.

Mini Ep. 12: The Anatomic Hierarchy25 Jul 202400:08:52

In this week's mini-episode, we're discussing the anatomic hierarchy!  The anatomic hierarchy is a simple but powerful mental model that organizes our body into six major tools, from strongest to weakest: our torso, our two legs, our two arms, and our head.  The anatomic hierarchy teaches us that when attacking, we should use as many of our weapons as possible, especially the stronger ones.  And we'll also have better success if we're attacking a weaker part of our opponent's body.

Mini Ep. 11: Posts18 Jul 202400:11:43

In this week's mini-episode, we're discussing posts, the last of the six core mechanics of Jiu-Jitsu!  Posts occur when you use an extremity of your body to connect with and base off a platform like the floor.  Posts are important for maintaining your own base and creating opportunities to attack your opponent.  This is the sixth in a six-part series of mini-episodes we're doing on the core mechanics of Jiu-Jitsu: frames, levers, wedges, clamps, hooks, and posts.
