We are rewinding the clock and rewatching Paul Verhoeven’s outrageous sci-fi action classic to find out if this movie still holds up nearly 30 years later.
Before the internet turned Starship Troopers into one of the most frequently misunderstood cult movies of the 1990s, it was a giant bug killing, space fighting, military science fiction movie packed with explosions, gore, cheesy performances, wild special effects, and a whole lot more going on underneath the surface.
In this episode of Nostalgia Check, BJ and Juan revisit Starship Troopers and take a fresh look at the movie we remember from the 1990s. Does the action still deliver? Do the giant bugs still look awesome? How well do the practical effects and visual effects hold up? Is the acting intentionally over the top or just wonderfully ridiculous? And perhaps most importantly, does the satire and political commentary behind Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers still land today?
We talk about Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Ironside, Jake Busey, Clancy Brown and the rest of the Starship Troopers cast, along with the movie’s unforgettable battle sequences, giant alien bugs, military propaganda, futuristic society, controversial themes, brutal violence, ridiculous dialogue, and massive 1990s sci-fi movie energy.
We also look at Starship Troopers as a piece of 1990s movie history and ask the bigger Nostalgia Check question: Are we remembering the movie accurately, or are we remembering the version of it that existed in our heads?
This isn’t just a review. It’s a rewatch.
Nostalgia Check is BJ in the Morning’s movie series where we revisit movies from across the last several decades, putting our memories and nostalgia to the test. Some movies get better with age. Some don’t. And some turn out to be completely different movies than we remembered.
So grab your helmet, report for duty, and join us for another Nostalgia Check.
