Jack's storytelling takes us back to his teenage years when he sneaked cannabis from family members, leading to a lifelong relationship that's infused humour and creativity into his writing and comedy. Happy New Year 202329 Dec 202200:02:22

Where are you listening from?

The calendar is about to turn and I’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy new year as we enter into 2023! For those who want to create some positive change for the upcoming year, let me suggest the book Atomic Habits by James Clear.

One’s condition on marijuana is always existential. One can feel the importance of each moment and how it is changing one. One feels one’s being, one becomes aware of the enormous apparatus of nothingness -—the hum of a hi-fi set, the emptiness of a pointless interruption, one becomes aware of the war between each of us, how the nothingness in each of us seeks to attack the being of others, how our being in turn is attacked by the nothingness in others.

Kindness & Cannabis with Ben Kaplan01 Dec 202200:24:34

Where are you listening from?

Ben would like y'all to start this episode with an edible so plan ahead, grab your favourite treat and get ready for a fun conversation.

Ben Kaplan thinks weed drinks should be sold in your local grocery store, that cannabis is unfairly stigmatized, that the nascent legal industry has a long way to go and that kindness is the best framework from which to operate.

As Editor-In-Chief of Kind Magazine, a cannabis magazine freely distributed in legal dispensaries across Canada, Ben has spent a lot of time with the people involved in legal Cannabis in Canada. He's both optimistic and critical of how the legal industry works but instead of complaining, Ben devotes his time and attention to activities that push the movement forward.

Because we had a limited amount of time to talk, we didn't have time to cover all of the questions that I was eager to ask, but Ben was kind enough to share some written responses.  Find those on the episode webpage and enjoy this conversation between myself and Ben!

Inspired by podcast guest, Monica Lo, author of The Weed Gummies Cookbook, she's also the creator behind Sous Weed, a website showcasing beautiful infused cuisine. There were so many incredible dishes on the site but these croquettes stood out. Using easy to find seasonal vegetables, cheese and a crispy breading, they hit all the right notes. As a bonus, I also tried her Garlic Aioli that serves as a simple dressing that elevates a dish without having to infuse an entire meal. Enjoy!

Classic Mac & Cheese20 Oct 202200:23:57

Where are you listening from?

Is there anything more comforting than a hot bowl of macaroni and cheese. When made from scratch and infused, it becomes the ultimate warm meal for a chilly day.

I used to smoke marijuana. But I’ll tell you something: I would only smoke it in the late evening. Oh, occasionally the early evening, but usually the late evening —or the mid-evening. Just the early evening, mid-evening and late evening. Occasionally, early afternoon, early mid-afternoon, or perhaps the late-mid-afternoon. Oh, sometimes the early-mid-late-early morning…But never at dusk.

Terri's Plum Torte22 Sep 202200:16:46

Where are you listening from?

This recipe came from a listener who was enjoying an abundance of plums from a tree in her yard. The results were so good she had to share. After I tried it, I realized that a torte was not as tricky to make as I thought it might be yet it sounds impressive. It's stone fruit season which means it's easy to find ripe fruit to use for this recipe! Easy to make and even simpler to infuse, this lovely dessert can be adjusted to use whatever fruit and nuts are in season. Enjoy!

If you substitute marijuana for tobacco and alcohol, you'll add eight to 24 years to your life.

If you enjoy edibles you may wonder whether it's worth going to all the trouble to make your own? Have you ever compared the edibles you can buy on the legal or legacy market in relation to the cost of making your own? While the results may not surprise you, the advantages of making your own edibles extend far beyond the cost. For now though, we take a look at the cost difference between making your own edibles vs. buying from the legal or legacy market. I should note that the prices I'm providing are based on prices in Ontario, Canada and thus in Canadian dollars.

Concentrates with Chase12 May 202201:07:59

Where are you listening from?

If you've been thinking of making your own concentrates, then this episode is for you.  Inspired by listeners who have been asking about making and using concentrates in edibles, having this knowledge can allow to make your own OR if you're buying concentrates, understand why quality matters.  I'm joined by Chase, known online as Temple Grower, a guest who knows a lot more about making concentrates than the average person.  Not only does he work in the legal cannabis industry in a lab making distillate, he is an avid cultivator, breeder, living soil advocate and concentrate maker.  He's truly a believer in growing and making your own medicine so you can take control of your high life!

Concentrates make for potent edibles and lend themselves well to many candy-making recipes. They're great for topicals, making infusions or you can also ingest them directly. Since they're so potent, a little goes a long way so be sure to start with the smallest possible dose and work your way up from there.

Here are the links for this episode:
Last but not least, do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area as alcohol fumes are highly flammable!

  • Temple Grower YouTube, Twitter & Instagram @templegrower, TempleGrowing website
  • High On Homegrown podcast
  • Percy's Growroom - look for Chase's (Temple Grower) living soil recipe
  • Chef Charleen Caabay likes to use concentrates in her edibles - episode
  • Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) vs. Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO)
  • Difference between types of concentrates is based on type of solvent used
  • Ethanol - drinking alcohol, Isopropyl - 99% alcohol, Acetone - toxic, don't use
  • Concentrated cannabis oil RSO/FECO does not preserve terpenes, tinctures can preserve terpenes
  • Get all that solvent out - improves the taste and reduces harm from ingesting the solvent which would be counterproductive
  • Lasts quite a while, store in syringe in the refrigerator to keep the molasses like consistency
  • Can use in gummies, candies, eaten directly, infused into fats
  • Start low and go slow - these oils are potent, proceed with caution
  • Test for potency by sending to a local lab, Gemmacert, tCheck
  • Buy RSO/FECO from a legal source unless you're confident with the producer, process and have a certificate of analysis. When you concentrate cannabinoids, you concentrate potentially bad stuff along side

Cooking with Chef Charleen05 May 202200:43:27

Where are you listening from?

Chef Charleen Caabay was pulled into the kitchen as a young girl, strongly influenced by her Filipino family and expanded into culinary cannabis in her late teens and early twenties. She made all the mistakes that you make when you start out creating your first edibles. Thankfully she figured out the best way to make a potent batch of brownies and learned to make her own concentrates so she could increase the potency of any dish she was making.

Chef Charleen's (@chefcharleen) career has taken her many places, from the winner of the Food Network's 2017 Chopped cooking competition, to hosting pop-up dinners, running dispensaries, supporting entrepreneurs and working on her own edibles and beverage line, she is a powerhouse fuelled by cannabis!

In this conversation we talk about her early influences, how she makes her own concentrates, her go-to edibles, how she calculates potency, partnering with Levo Oil, her work as co-founder of the People's Ecosystem and a lot more. Enjoy!
