In todays episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I share my eating disorder (orthorexia) origin story, and I speak with my own sister (and clinical psychologist), Dr. Skye Fitzpatrick about how mental illnesses like eating disorders affect and are affected by family members and those in your immediate circle. Skye and I talk about how my eating disorder affected her as a young teen, and how families can often do more harm than good by over-accommodating the individual struggling with mental illness. This can often keep the person who is suffering from mental illness in a place where they don’t have to recover. I leave listeners with a list of dos and dont’s for talking to a loved one about your concerns around their disordered eating, and I also share a script on how you can broach the topic with your loved one.

Happy new year, friends! In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be talking to Lauren Hope Krass. Lauren is a comedian, a contributor to Betches media, and the co-host of the Good Bodies podcast - formerly called Diet Starts Tomorrow. She’s also a body positivity advocate and a fat activist and I’m so excited to have her on our show! Today we will be unpacking common misunderstandings and criticisms of the body positivity movement (ie. that it “glorifies obesity”) and how it differs from movements like fat activism and fat acceptance. Lauren also discusses how fat activism and body positivity is important for everyone, including straight size (smaller bodied) folks. We’re going to chat about how weight loss drugs like ozempic are affecting the fat acceptance community. Lauren also shares some tips about how straight sized folks can act as allies to their larger bodied friends. I finish off by discussing how fat phobia affects people in larger bodies, and how this differs from thin privilege.. No matter what your body looks like, where you are in your body acceptance journey, this is an essential listen any time of year, but especially as we’re currently in some toxic new years resolution waters.

In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be talking to Dr Emily Contois,  an Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa specializing in how identities are formed at the vital intersection of food, the body, and ideas about health. She is the author of “Diners, Dudes, and Diets: How Gender and Power Collide in Food Media and Culture” and co-editor of “Food Instagram: Identity, Influence, and Negotiation”. Today we will be diving into the intersection of gender norms and food choices. We will discuss how women are socialized to choose light dainty foods like salad whereas men are encouraged to eat hearty meals like steak and potatoes. We will be discussing the sneaky ways that diet culture and the food industry plays to these norms (ie. how foods are marketed to women vs men). We’re gonna talk about the “cool girl” story arc in TV and film (think Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls) and how that can be really damaging to young women’s relationship with food and their body. And I’m going to leave you with some actionable tips on how to reject these gendered food expectations which may specifically come in handy during the holidays when food judgement is at an all time high.

She is the author of “Diners, Dudes, and Diets: How Gender and Power Collide in Food Media and Culture” and co-editor of “Food Instagram: Identity, Influence, and Negotiation”. Today we will be riding on the heels of the popular Netflix show Adolescence, we are exploring the very scary effect of the manosphere, incel and “red pill” subcultures on young boys. Today we’re going to chat about how the patriarchy harms not just women, but men as well. We discuss the dangerous teachings of the manosphere and leading influencers like Andrew Tate. We also talk about the pipeline that young men are finding themselves going down starting with innocuous places (ie. self improvement, dating, fitness, dieting) that lures them into incel culture. We talk in detail about the intersection between diet culture and the manosphere and the lack of body positivity movements for men. We talk about the role of bullying, social isolation, AI, p0rn, types of school, and gender roles modelled at home.  I finish with a list of potential actionable tips to help you start to build emotional resilience, media literacy and tolerance to different expressions of gender to help set the stage to allow your kids to reject these manosphere ideologies.

In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I am chatting breastfeeding with Dr Lauren Hughes, a board certified pediatrician, lactation consultant, mom and founder of Bloom pediatrics. I will start by sharing my own personal story about breastfeeding struggles and Lauren and I will vent over the enormous pressures women feel by “breast is best” messaging. We will also talk about the potential dangers to baby and mom of insisting on breastfeeding at any and all costs. Lauren will chat about the *actual* risks of various activities and substances while breastfeeding (alcohol, caffeine, ozempic, smoking, CBD and THC) and discuss whether or not you should change your diet while breastfeeding if baby is fussy. And I will break down the data on the benefits of breastfeeding over formula for baby’s health, and future risk of obesity and low IQ when we rule out socioeconomic confounders (spoiler: the benefits might not be as profound as you might think). Note the purpose of this episode is not to downplay the benefits of  breastfeeding for mom or baby, but to help empower women to feel confident in the feeding choices they make.
