Basic Bitch - Floating, Olympics, Outside Lands and the DNC23 Aug 202400:39:13

Send us a text

We’re back with a Basic Bitch and we have a lot to catch up on! From the Olympics (and a certain pole vaulting video that we may or may not be watching regularly), to Outside Lands (Grace Jones AND Chappell Roan?!?) and the Democratic National Convention (“…from the windoooows to the Walzzzz…”), these bitches needed to float on the river just to recover from all the excitement. And we cap it off with a special announcement for friend of the show Anica Wu of Bonjerk who makes the best jerky we’ve ever had. If you’re living in the SF/Bay Area, click here to find out where it’s being sold at a location near you!

COPA 71 Director Rachel Ramsay26 Jun 202400:19:31

Send us a text

We are beyond excited that this documentary is out in theaters, because it is an event that we all should have grown up hearing about! COPA 71 shares the erased history of the 1971 Women's World Cup (more than 20 years prior to the first FIFA sponsored Women's World Cup), which was held in Mexico City and attended by more than 100,000 fans.

Director Rachel Ramsay joins us via zoom to explain her shock in finding out about this massive event that has been purposefully wiped from history, the extensive search for archival footage that continued until two weeks before they finished the movie, the emotional impact of the story, and getting major players like Alex Morgan, Brandi Chastain, and Venus and Serena Williams on board.

Sundance 2023 - Twice Colonized & Murder In Big Horn20 Feb 202300:26:54

Send us a text

Welcome to day 9 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Joined again by our Park City cohort & honorary bitch John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we're highlighting a Sundance film and series that focus on Indigenous issues.

Twice Colonized is a documentary that tells the story of Aaju Peter, a Greenlandic Inuit lawyer and activist who is working to bring her colonizers in both Canada and Denmark to justice, and defend the human rights of Indigenous peoples of the Arctic.  We had the pleasure of sitting down with Aaju Peter and director Lin Alluna, to discuss the difficulty of following Aaju through some of the toughest moments in anyone's life, the importance of bringing some light and fun into the film, and what it means to be Twice Colonized.

The episodic docu-series Murder in Big Horn gives a thorough examination of the tribal members and communities in Big Horn, Montana who are fighting an epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) that has been reoccurring since colonization. Directors Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin discuss how these social issues can be traced all the way back from the roots of being placed on the reservation, the frustration and anger that comes with not receiving sufficient help from the police, and how the community is left to pick up the pieces. You can watch Murder in Big Horn now on Showtime.

Slamdance 2023 Documentaries - Silent Love and Starring Jerry As Himself17 Feb 202300:27:56

Send us a text

Welcome to day 8 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Along with our Park City Co-Host John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we are sharing two award winning Slamdance documentaries that follow people with very complicated lives.

In Silent Love (winner of the Slamdance Grand Jury Honorable Mention for Documentary Feature Film), we follow Aga who, after the death of her mother, is raising her younger brother while keeping her relationship with a woman a secret in a small homophobic town in Poland. Director Marek Kozakiewicz discusses how he gained the trust of the women to tell their story, and how the film has helped to give them the confidence to be more open with their relationship.

In Starring Jerry as Himself (winner of the Slamdance Grand Jury Documentary Feature Film Award, Audience Award for Documentary Feature Film, and Acting Award), the genre lines become blurred between one part crime thriller, and one part documentary. Retiree and Chinese immigrant, Jerry Hsu, is joined by his family in retelling the story of how he was recruited by the Chinese police to be an undercover agent. We were joined by director Law Chen, Jerry, and his son/producer Jonathan Hsu, to discuss why they decided they needed to tell this story, how their family has grown closer throughout this process, and the complicated nature of filming real people playing themselves.

Sundance 2023 Documentaries - Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, The Disappearance of Shere Hite, and Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project15 Feb 202300:45:50

Send us a text

Welcome to Day Seven of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Per the usual with Honorary Bitch John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we're highlighting three Sundance documentary films that focus on strong women who changed the game.

In
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, we get an inside look on how her rise to fame at a young age caused her to be sexualized as a child, and the repercussions (both good and bad) that this had on her career on her personal life. We sat down with returning guest, director Lana Wilson (who we interviewed in 2020 for her Taylor Swift documentary,
Miss Americana), to discuss what it was like to tell the story of an American icon, and how the most important part of her film is about the relationship between a mother and her daughter.

The Disappearance of Shere Hite tells the story of a woman who
should
be widely known and talked about, but sadly, as the title suggests, her life story has disappeared from our country just as she did. Shere Hite was the author of The Hite Report, published in 1976, and was a nationwide study on female sexuality based on thousands of questionnaires that she received from women across the country. The book is a blueprint of what women really think about sex, and the importance of clitoral stimulation. Director and returning guest Nicole Newnham (who we interviewed in 2020 for her film
Crip Camp), shares our frustration in the men who were threatened by Shere's work, and explains why it was important to share both the strength it took for Shere to do this revolutionary work, and her weaknesses that caused her to eventually leave the country.

Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project highlights the life and legacy of legendary poet Nikki Giovanni. Directors Michele Stephenson and Joe Brewster sit down with us to talk about Nikki's unique outlook on life, how this film deals with tough topics at times and will als

Slamdance 2023 Documentaries - The Mad Writer & With Peter Bradley13 Feb 202300:30:37

Send us a text

Welcome to day 6 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Joined per the usual with our Park City Co-Host, John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we highlight two Slamdance documentaries that are centered around artists: The Mad Writer, and With Peter Bradley.

The Mad Writer follows hip-hop phenom and music producer L'Orange as he deals with his clinical depression, in addition to finding mysterious tumors in his ear canals that threaten his future in music. We sat down with director Zach Kashkett, producer Jon Webb, cinematographer Trevor Metscher, and subject L'Orange (aka Austin Hart), as they described what it was like to work together as longtime friends, the difficulties of filming a self-proclaimed recluse, and how important it was for L'Orange to share his struggles with mental illness.

In With Peter Bradley, we're introduced into the world of Peter Bradley, a 79-year-old Black abstract artist who hasn't had his own show in an art gallery since 1972. Director Alex Rappoport shares how he was able to record Peter Bradley (his neighbor) during the quarantine, and his decision to keep him as the only person on the screen (other than Peter's cat). And then legendary composer Javon Jackson, explains how he was able to take Peter Bradley's life and art and transform it into a collection of beautiful music.

Sundance 2023 Documentaries - Food and Country and 20 Days in Mariupol10 Feb 202300:29:50

Send us a text

Welcome to day 5 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Along with our Park City co-host, John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we're highlighting two Sundance documentaries that deal with current issues around the world and here in the US- Food and Country, and 20 Days in Mariupol.

Food and Country follows trailblazing food writer Ruth Reichl during her journey to connect with small farmers, ranchers, and chefs, as they try to survive not only during the pandemic, but through the systemic challenges they face in the food industry. We were happily reunited with return guest, director Laura Gabbert (our first interview was for her 2015 film City of Gold), and she explains how she met Ruth Reichl, and how a film about restaurants surviving during the pandemic became  an expansive history of the food industry, and the struggle behind the food we eat.

20 Days in Mariupol (winner of the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Competition Audience Award) is a film that everyone in the world needs to see. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine was all but imminent, a team of Ukrainian journalists enter the port city of Mariupol and the film captures those first 20 days of bombing, assault, and attempts at fleeing from the locals. Ukrainian AP journalist and director Mstyslav Chernov shares how he copes with the dangerous nature of his work, and his hope that this film will not only help people understand what it means to be at war, but also push people to demand that Ukraine gets the help that they deserve.

Slamdance 2023 Documentaries - Cisco Kid & Motel Drive08 Feb 202300:29:18

Send us a text

Welcome to day four of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Today we're getting to know two Slamdance documentaries that tell the story of overlooked or abandoned American towns- Cisco Kid and Motel Drive. Joined as always by our Park City co-host and honorary bitch, John Wildman of FilmsGoneWild.com.

In Cisco Kid, we meet Eileen, who is living alone among the remnants of a deserted ghost town in Cisco, Utah. Director Emily Kaye Allen shares how she met and gained the trust of Eileen, and how making this film helped her spend more time in nature and see the beauty in being away from mainstream society.

Motel Drive is a documentary about an infamous strip of motels in Fresno, California, and a family struggling to survive among its rapid decline. Director Brendan Geraghty  explains why he decided to make this film, the struggles of an indie filmmaker budget,  how his main subjects have become a part of his family and and composer Zach Wright chats with us about finding the right sound to help move this documentary along.

Sundance 2023 Documentaries - Plan C & Smoke Sauna Sisterhood06 Feb 202300:31:13

Send us a text

Welcome to day three of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Today we're bringing you two Sundance documentaries dealing with women's issues that we knew we had to cover, Plan C, and Smoke Sauna Sisterhood.

Plan C follows Francine Coeytaux and her team of providers as they find ways to distribute abortion pills across the country during the pandemic, as well as after the fall of Roe V. Wade. Director Tracy Droz Tragos shares how she met Francine and gained her trust, and how documenting this story has turned her fear into hope. Not only is this a great film, but it is a call to action! For more information, click here

In Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (winner of the Sundance Directing Award, World Cinema Documentary), we are invited into the intimate and sacred ritual of the smoke sauna in southern Estonia, where women share their deepest and innermost thoughts and secrets. Director Anna Hints and producer Marianne Ostrat joined us to share how they were able to convey the overall beauty and strength of women through both their shooting style and trust they gained with their subjects. We may or may not have cried both during this interview, and while watching the film.

Slamdance 2023 Narrative Films - Mascot, The Underbug, and Waiting For The Light To Change03 Feb 202300:43:58

Send us a text

It's day 2 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage and today we're sharing three very different, yet powerful Slamdance narrative films. Joined again by our friend & Park City cohort, John Wildman of FilmsGoneWild.com.

Mascot follows a frustrated young man whose dangerous actions are endangering not only himself, but his whole family. Director Remy van Heugten shares how this film was an expression of his fear for the younger generation and  the long term effects that our society will have on them.

The Underbug is a thriller (that won the Slamdance Grand Jury Award for Best Breakout Feature Film) based in India that shows what happens when two untrusting strangers meet in the midst of country-wide riots and violence. Director Shujaat Saudagar and star Ali Fazal share how they were not only able to make this film during the peak of the quarantine, but it also helped them cope with the trauma of the moment.

Waiting for the Light To Change is a coming of age film about a group of twenty somethings trying to process life while on a weeklong beach getaway. We had a big group for this one! Director/co-screenwriter Linh Tran, producer/co-screenwriter Jewell Santos, director of photography David Foy, and talent Qun Chi sit down with us to discuss how they were able to write and shoot this beautiful film (that won the Slamdance Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Film) in a short amount of time, with a limited budget.

Sundance Narrative Films - The Accidental Getaway Driver and Mamacruz01 Feb 202300:29:49

Send us a text

Welcome to Day One of our Sundance and Slamdance Film Festival coverage! We've joined forces again with our dear friend and Honorary Bitch, John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, and we're excited to a share our interviews with two Sundance narrative films that we really loved...

First we sit down with director Sing J. Lee to talk about his beautiful film The Accidental Getaway Driver (winner of the Sundance U.S. Dramatic Competition Director Award). The film follows a Vietnamese driver in Southern California  as he unknowingly picks up escaped convicts and becomes their hostage. Sing shares how he was able to infuse both action and thoughtfulness with both the writing and directing of the film, and how he adapted the film that was based on a true story.

Next we discuss the film Mamacruz with director Patricia Ortega. This hilarious and touching film follows a religious grandmother who accidentally stumbles across porn on the internet, and goes through a sexual awakening. Patricia shares how growing up under the sexual repression of Catholicism, as well as finding an interesting picture of her mother, led to her need to make this film.

Flashback Friday - Everything Everywhere All At Once: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and The Daniels27 Jan 202300:35:47

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!

This week, in celebration of the 11 Oscar nominations for one of our favorite films of 2022, we're throwing back to our interview with the directors and stars of Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The Daniels Everything Everywhere All At Once is 2022's best film. Go see it and tell us it is not. This is the most excited we've been about a major action/sci-fi release in a long time (maybe ever) and we were ecstatic to welcome the lead cast to the mic - Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and directors  Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

With the Daniels, we get to hear how they met, how they're process was writing this script before and during the Trump presidency, their very fun fight props, setting the tone on-set and off, how in the hell they got Andre 3000 on the score of this film and a little bitch talking about some of our favorite directors making movies that feel tone deaf.

Changing over to the lead cast, Erin talks with Michelle Yeoh about an off camera comment she made to one of the Daniels, Stephanie Hsu talks all about her bad ass wardrobes while playing villain Jobu Tupaki, and Ke Huy Quan talks about coming back to the big screen after years of feeling invisible in Hollywood.

Chef Catie Randazzo From HBO's The Big Brunch18 Jan 202300:33:21

TW, the topic of suicide is brought up during this conversation.

We think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship! Chef Catie Randazzo joins us from HBO's The Big Brunch, to talk about why they love being in the kitchen, how they got on the show, and the incredible difference the show has made in their life ever since. Catie shares what it means to be a "recovering pentecostal", coming out as non-binary, and being a self proclaimed flirt. Then we wax poetic about our mutual love for Dan Levy, and make plans to meet at the most beautiful Taco Bell in the world!

The Return of Daveed Diggs13 Jan 202300:35:14

Send us a text

Sixth time is a charm for one of our favorite returning guests, Mr. Daveed Diggs. He's our emotional support human and we are so thrilled that he is our first interview episode of the new year.  Normally we have Daveed on promoting a film or TV show, but this time we got to shoot the shit a bit and dig in to his music project Clipping - which is described as American experimental hip hop group and has been around since 2009. We also dish on a couple of his upcoming film and TV projects - The Little Mermaid live action film coming out this Memorial Day weekend, the second season of Blindspotting (which we just found out will debut at this years SXSW festival!) and hear about his holiday family activities. It's all about the board games we're told.

Also, we are at the tail end of our Sundance fundraiser. We take off in just a few days but are still in need of some financial help. If you are in a position to be able to help us, we'd really appreciate it. New Year Same Bitches - First Basic Bitch of 202311 Jan 202300:43:11

Send us a text

Hey there! Happy new year!  2023 marks our 10th year in podcasting and we're so excited to share this major milestone with you. Earlier this week we sat together in studio and recorded our first Basic Bitch of this year. In this episode we talk about our Sundance fundraiser that is going on right now. It costs upwards of $6K to cover both the Sundance and Slamdance film festivals (both go on at the same time in Park City, Utah) and as an independent podcast, this is a big stretch for us to cover. Any donation is appreciated and if you can't donate, spreading the word helps!

We also get into our new year's eve/new year's day shenanigans, Ange's boner killer convo's with dudes, how Erin is not going to run for Mayor of San Francisco, and more.  Stay tuned for our upcoming interviews with Daveed Diggs (our emotional support human) and The Big Brunch's Catie Randazzo in the coming weeks and of course, our coverage of the Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals.

Donate to our Sundance/Slamdance fundraiser HERE . Details on donation levels are below:

*Basic Bitch Level - $25: Tagged shoutouts in our Instagram stories while we're at Sundance. You never know who will show up.

*Fancy Bitch Level - $100: Only 5 slots available! You get a personal thank-you at the end of each of our original Bitch Talk episodes from Sundance 2023

Welcome to Bitch Talk's official 2022 year in review! We go over our favorite interviews, interesting things we learned about each other while Basic Bitching, and the return guests that make our year complete. We also share which episode "some people" call Erin's best interview, which guest was almost too hot to handle, and the magic of "perm talk". Thank you for hanging with us through the highs and lows of a truly crazy year, we'll see you on the flip side. Cheers!

Actor Jeff Hiller of HBO's Somebody Somewhere21 Dec 202200:33:56

Jeff Hiller plays one of our favorite characters (Joel) on one of our favorite shows (HBO's Somebody Somewhere), so this interview is something of a love fest! We discuss the significance of his character, the complicated nature of religion, and how he deals with the  pressure of singing alongside co-star and icon Bridget Everett. He also teaches us the secret to acting in an episode of Law and Order,  and gives us some things to look forward to for season 2 of Somebody Somewhere. He is a breath of fresh air and a warm blanket on a cold night. Enjoy!

Flashback Friday - BROS Actor/Co-Writer Billy Eichner & Actor Luke MacFarlane17 Dec 202200:17:49

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!  We're flashing not too far back to episode 700 when we sat down IN PERSON with actor Luke MacFarlane and co-writer/actor Billy Eichner of the film BROS. It was such a great interview and we really loved this movie and now that it's streaming on Peacock (and other streaming services!) we wanted to get the word out that you can watch it from the comfort of wherever you are. Original episode notes are below.

You are landing on our 700th episode y'all. Did you read that.....700 EPISODES. So, of course we brought fire - writer, comedian, actor Billy Eichner and actor Luke Macfarlane talking about their film Bros. We were lucky to be able to watch the U.S. premiere of the film a few weeks back at the beautiful Castro Theater in San Francisco and it was an experience. The movie is so good! Lots of laugh out loud moments (so many we missed some of the dialogue), sweet and loving moments, and some HOT love scenes cause they could.

We had an absolute great time talking with Luke and Billy and we hope that after you listen to our convo, you'll head out this weekend and see Bros. It's such a triumphant first major studio LGBTQ rom-com (lead by an LGBTQ cast) and yeah, you can take your teens, parents, family, and friends to see it because it's that accessible. Plus there are some fantastic cameos in Bros - you will hoot and holler when you see them.

On a personal note, we are so proud to hit this major milestone of our podcast and to have folks like Billy and Luke featured on this show. We want to thank you for listening, following, commenting, rating and reviewing us. If you haven't followed us on socials or written a review or rated us, we want to ask you to do that after you listen to this episode. It helps us in so many ways and it just takes a few minutes to do so.  Also, if you enjoy this podcast, tip us. It's easy and the link is right here.

Flashback Bonus: Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down09 Dec 202200:20:22

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!

This week, we are flashing back to EP686, when we brought back a couple of our favorite filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West,  as they discuss their latest documentary Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down . The film recently premiered on CNN, and can be found on demand on various cable channels and the CNN apps.

Original Show Notes Notes

It's our fourth time speaking with a couple of our favorite documentarians (RBG, My Name is Pauli Murray, Julia) - Julie Cohen and Betsy West about they're latest film, Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down which does not disappoint.  Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the face in 2011 at an in-person constituent event in a supermarket parking lot. She was severely injured and, at first, it was reported that she died from her injuries.

The film Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down takes you on a journey of Gabby's life from her humble beginnings, through her incredibly painful and heartbreaking recovery (shout out to her husband, former astronaut,  and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for being the ultimate caregiver!)  to her fighting for stricter gun laws through her non-profit Giffords.

We spoke with Julie and Betsy about this incredibly timely film and about how they were able to land (spoiler!) President Barack Obama, Gabby Giffords gift of music knowledge, a special surprise that was found in the Kelly/Giffords freezer, how important music therapy was for Gabby's recovery, and so much more. A big thank you to Julie and Betsy for loving what we do and always saying yes to having a conversation with us. <3

Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down will be in theaters this Friday, July 15. Buy your tickets and bring some friends.

Thelma director Josh Margolin and actor June Squibb19 Jun 202400:16:07

Send us a text

Thelma is the action/comedy film we've all been waiting for, and this interview was just as fun as watching the movie! Thelma is a 93 year-old grandmother who gets duped by a phone scammer and sets out on a quest through the streets of LA to reclaim what was taken from her.

Director Josh Margolin and the film's star, June Squibb, join us to explain how Josh's 103 year-old grandmother was the inspiration for the film, and that June was always his first choice for the lead. Then June shares her favorite stunts to perform, and the story behind her new nickname "stops-on-a-dime Squibb". We cap it off with some touching behind the scenes stories of their time working with Richard Roundtree.

Cat Daddies Director Mye Hoang07 Dec 202200:22:37

Send us a text

Who knew we needed a Cat Daddies documentary? Director Mye Hoang did and she uncovered stories of men across the U.S. who love their cats - like, A LOT.  Of course we know that cats are a thing (we're dog people over here, mostly because of allergies *sneeze!*) and we know so many folks who love them, but this film is actually a conversation about masculinity, love, bonding, and friendship.

Pets are the best, and as we found out in this documentary cats can have a special power over their male owners when they take them in.  If you are or are not a Cat Daddy put this film on your list because there's more to cat daddies (and their cats) than you think.

This episode is all about The Sports Bra! We get into Jenny's past as a basketball player, her training as a chef, how the bar's menu is a blend of both her Vietnamese and American roots, and the importance of supporting and empowering women. Basic Bitch - Vacation, Staycation, and A Medicinal Mushroom Journey23 Nov 202201:12:02

Send us a text

Welcome to our Basic Bitch about different trips we've taken far away, at home, and in our minds. Ange catches us up on her adventures in Mexico (and explains the origin of a "Kiefer Sutherland Hat"), Erin reflects on her work staycation at the Intercontinental in SF, and Char shares all the free stuff she gets at her new favorite casino. Then Ange explains how a medicinal mushroom trip helped her deal with her grief, and we cap it off by celebrating our moments of pleasure.

This week is a great time to continue supporting indigenous art and artists. A few of our favorites:

Urban Native Era - for clothing, shoes, accessories, and hats (including our favorite new beanie!)

Wahpepah's Kitchen - support this Native chef in Oakland, CA (you're welcome)

Reservation Dogs - comedy/drama on Hulu by co-creator Taika Waititi

And while we consider it important to be grateful for our many blessings, please also recognize that for indigenous people, "Thanksgiving" is a national day of mourning. For more information, here's a great conversation about telling more accurate indigenous stories hosted by the folks at the ACLU (they're also a great place to donate if you feel so inclined).

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! We are so proud re-share with you our SXSW conversation with director David Siev. David's film, Bad Axe  is out today in select theaters and streaming on Google Play Movies and Amazon Prime Video and we hope that you will seek it out while you're making your weekend plans.  Our original episode description is below:

Welcome to day 4 of our SXSW Film Festival coverage! We're excited to bring you a group of beautifully made, deeply impactful documentaries, and equally satisfying conversations.

Bad Axe is a documentary shot in 2020 as an Asian-American family struggles to keep their restaurant alive in the midst of a pandemic, Neo-Nazis, and Trump's rural America. Director David Siev explains the complications of switching between being a member of the family versus the director of this film, and how this project taught him more about his family- especially his father- than he ever could have imagined.

Flashback Friday - The U.S. vs. Reality Winner director Sonia Kennebeck11 Nov 202200:17:24

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! Since today is Veteran's Day in the United States and we are going through some scary mid-term elections, we thought it would be a good time to bring back our 2021 interview with director Sonia Kennebeck talking about her documentary The U.S. vs Reality Winner.  It's a story of whistleblowing, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, and 2016 election fraud.

Our original episode description can be found below:

Does anyone out there remember the name Reality Winner? We had a fuzzy recollection of this 24-hour news cycle name that we heard early in 45's presidency but had forgotten because of the 24-hour news cycle we all lived through the past four years. Director Sonia Kennebeck has done a deep dive into this story following Reality as well as her families struggle with a government who punishes its citizens for whistleblowing even if it's in the countries best interest.

Take a listen to our conversation with Sonia as we talk about the United States vs. Reality Winner, Edward Snowden, the strange goings on while filming in Russia, and how dangerous it is working on these types of documentary stories.

Dark Thoughts On A Plane, 11AM is NOT Early Afternoon, & The Lost New Years Eve That Will Never Go Away09 Nov 202200:48:53

Send us a text

In this Basic, the bitches are in a funky mood as Erin shares one last New Orleans travel story that goes a little dark ( no surprise). Then Producer Char shares a story of watching her neighbors getting rained on, and Ange shares a little about her current sabbatical in Mexico. There's an age old argument about what actually constitutes as "early afternoon", and Erin and Ange revisit a lost New Years eve evening  they spent together 7 years ago that they are trying to bury, but it just won't go away.

The Return of Shana Feste Director & Co-Writer of Run Sweetheart Run02 Nov 202200:27:02

Send us a text

We love when our return guests ask for us by name and that's exactly what happened when we were pitched this interview with director Shana Feste. We met Shana during her press tour of her film Boundaries back in 2018 and then we were reunited at the 2020 Sundance  Film Festival. It's been two whole years (plus some months) but her film Run Sweetheart Run is out in the universe streaming right now on Amazon Prime.

We get to catch up with Shana about using her hometown of Los Angeles as the backdrop of Run Sweetheart Run, her loyal music supervisor (who picked some great songs for the film btw), writing about periods for a film, her real life story of a date that got scary and later was the basis of Run Sweetheart Run, the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, and more.

It was great to speak with Shana again and we can't wait to see what's up her sleeve on the big screen and beyond. Thanks for another heartfelt convo Shana <3.

Flashback Friday - A House Is Not A Disco and I Don't Understand You14 Jun 202400:25:42

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! We're bringing back two great films that we covered at SXSW, because you will be able to see them on the big screen (and we highly recommend that you do) during the Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco (from June 19th -June 29th)!

A House Is Not A Disco captures a year in the life of the world's most iconic homo-normative community: Fire Island Pines. Director Brian J. Smith and producer Jeremy Truong share the difficulty of staying focused while you're being offered margaritas during filming, how climate change became an important part of the story, and the concept behind "food for bottoms".

I Don't Understand You is a narrative film that follows an American couple on the verge of adopting a baby as they find themselves stranded in rural Italy without transportation or language skills. And of course, chaos ensues. This interview is with producers Jessamine Burgum and Kara Durrett from Pinky Promise Films. We get into starting a production company during the heart of the pandemic, their decision making process for new films, how being a young company is an advantage in an ever changing industry, and what a difference it makes to work with really cool people.

Welp, we're back in studio y'all. We may have been able to record in studio a few times during the pandemic but this time was different. Ange is back in SF as her home base and it's so nice to record with her in person. In this episode we get into how Ange is feeling about being back home, more New Orleans stories from Erin's recent trip, and of course our moment's of pleasure.

Thanks for riding the roller coaster of life with us during the past couple of years.....we hope to record in person more often and keep on keepin' on as best as we can.

Flashback Bonus - Descendant Documentary Director Margaret Brown22 Oct 202200:17:25

Send us a text

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!

In this episode, along with Sundance co-hort John Wildman,we throw back to our conversation earlier this year with director Margaret Brown of the film Descendant. We were blown away by this documentary and are thrilled to see it finally make a wide release on Netflix starting today, October 21. Our original episode description is below:

Descendant follows the descendants of Clotilda, the last known slave vessel illegally brought to  America, before, during, and after finding the first remains of the ship. Director Margaret Brown shares not only the emotional, but also the environmental issues in historic Africatown (in Southern Alabama where this film takes place), and her own emotional journey in making this film.

Descendant is the perfect pairing of the Netflix series High on the Hog as well as the Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America which we have covered on this podcast as well.

Erin has been in New Orleans for almost 2 weeks, and shares her favorite recs for drinks, food, and music- not to mention her new love for NOLA's Bywater neighborhood! Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! Today we are flashing back to our conversation with author Laurie Woolever. Her book, Bourdain: The Definitive Oral History debuted in December of 2021 and just in the last week, it's come out in paperback. We had such a great conversation with Laurie and happy to re-share with you. Original episode description is below:

This conversation was a real treat! For anyone who has ever listened to Bitch Talk, you know how much we loved Anthony Bourdain. So you can imagine our excitement at getting the chance to speak with his co-author, assistant, and "lieutenant" for almost 10 years, Laurie Woolever. Her newest book, "Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography", is full of stories compiled by almost 100 of his closest friends, family, and co-workers. She shares with us the details of her first encounter with Tony, his obsession with tanning, some behind the scenes stories from their travels to Japan and Sri Lanka, why she thinks he would have loved living through a global pandemic, and what she misses most about him. We loved this conversation, and we love this book. Enjoy!

Flashback Friday - Lumpia With a Vengeance director Patricio Ginelsa and actors April Absynth and Katria Dimaranan07 Oct 202200:18:18

Send us a text

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!

This time we're flashing back to our 2021 conversation with director Patricio Ginelsa and actors April Absynth and Katrina Dimaranan from the film Lumpia With a Vengeance. We're picking this episode to flashback to because Lumpia is in Bay Area theaters now as well as Southern California  theaters and about they're about to add New York to their list. This film is a fully independent venture, not carried by any big studio and a great way to celebrate Filipino American History Month.

Original episode description is below:

We are back at the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) Festival and have a packed house this time around with director Patricio Ginelsa and stars April Absynth and Katrina Dimaranan from the long awaited sequel Lumpia with a Vengeance. We get into the creative ways to make lumpia on the go, having badass bitches as the hero and the villain, the importance of diversity and representation in this film, and the struggle to keep a straight face on a set of jokesters. Finally, Katrina dishes on the struggles of wearing two different colors of lipstick at the same time, and Patricio shares how Danny Trejo became part of the lumpia family. This was a fun conversation and we loved their energy! And now, we need to eat some lumpia.

700th Episode Featuring Billy Eichner & Luke Macfarlane of Bros28 Sep 202200:43:18

Send us a text

Flashback Friday - 600th Episode 24 Hour Extravaganza!23 Sep 202200:50:37

Send us a text

Welcome to Flashback Friday! With nearly 700 episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! Original episode notes below.

Coming all the way live from Top Chef's Nelson German's restaurant alaMar Kitchen and Bar in downtown Oakland AND from the season finale premiere of the Blindspotting TV show we are bringing you our 600th episode! The working title was "24 hour, whirlwind 600th episode extravaganza" if you wanted the inside scoop. Ange, aka Captain Party flew up Sunday morning from L.A. to join the Bitch Talk team to enjoy a beautiful seafood dinner from future guest, Top Chef's season 18 Chef Nelson German (psst....get the shrimp taco's, oysters, and peel-n-eat shrimp!) and to attend the in person (all vaxxed of course!) Blindspotting TV season finale cause we had to make it happen.

In this episode you're gonna hear from us,  Blindspotting creator/showrunner/director/actor Rafael Casal, creator/exec. producer Daveed Diggs, actor Margo Hall, and screenwriter Alanna Brown. It was a privilege to not only see these folks in person but to be in an intimate setting with their loved ones, homies, and other cast members. Shout out to Sam - she's the magician behind the event and is a fan of Bitch Talk. Thanks SAM!! And shout out to the Chabot Space and Science Center for the event accommodations. If you're in the Bay, go visit this beautiful spot nestled in the redwoods in the Oakland hills.

Thanks for listening and for your support! We couldn't have reached 600 episodes without your help so thank you and this episode is dedicated to y'all!

Frameline Film Festival Executive Director - Allegra Madsen12 Jun 202400:23:08

Send us a text

We're continuing our celebration of Pride Month by discussing the Frameline Film Festival (the world's oldest and largest LGBTQIA film festival, running June 19th-June 29th) with Executive Director, Allegra Madsen!

Allegra is a badass bitch who has been able to marry her love of community building with her love of films as Frameline's newly coined Executive Director. She shares how she ended up in San Francisco, her (sometimes embarrassing) favorite movies growing up, how she was able to create a space for communities that are continually displaced in SF's Bayview district, and why film is a great gateway to other art forms. We then discuss our collective excitement over this year's festival lineup, including an epic (and free!) Juneteenth block party in the Castro District to kickoff the whole event. We'll see you there!

Join the fun and get tickets to this year's Frameline Film Festival here!

Flashback Friday - 500th Episode Celebration with Comedy Duo Frangela17 Sep 202200:50:33

Send us a text

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With nearly 700 episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all!

Back in the fall of 2020 we hit our 500th episode. It was a two pronged event - one being an epic live Zoom event that ended with Ange's dad dressed up in his Elvis costume (rest easy Tony) and an extra fun episode with returning guests, comedy duo Frangela! Details from that episode are below. Enjoy!

We're thrilled to celebrate the occasion with Frances Callier and Angela V. Shelton, aka comedy duo FRANGELA. We get into the unsettling events of this year, the upcoming election, and our theories on the future of our country. We were dealing with heavy topics, but these ladies have a way of channeling our anger and anxiety into laughter, something we all can use a little more of these days. They're smart, thoughtful, unforgiving in their beliefs, and above all, best friends.

Director Isabel Castro of the Documentary Mija14 Sep 202200:23:44

Send us a text

Mija is a documentary that follows Doris Munoz, a young music manager whose undocumented family depends on her ability to find the next big star. We sat down with director Isabel Castro, and discussed the serendipitous way she got connected with Doris, the gold mine of family videos she had access to for the film, and the importance of elevating immigrant stories. She also shares the fine art of funding as an independent filmmaker, and how Disney came on board and picked up the film. Enjoy this thoughtful and informative conversation, and then don't forget to watch Mija on Disney+ starting Friday, September 23!
