In this episode, we sit down with conservationist and passionate birder John Kinghorn to explore how birding goes beyond a hobby—it’s a powerful tool for conservation. We unpack how data from everyday birders contributes to protecting critical habitats, the importance of community science, and how BirdLife South Africa is spearheading efforts to safeguard our country’s most threatened bird species. John also highlights the critical role of conservation through education—an initiative being championed by BirdLife South Africa to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Plus, he shares some of his most unforgettable sightings and what keeps him inspired in the field.

In our very first episode of BirdTalk presented by Fitch & Leedes, we focus on one of South Africa’s most iconic — and most endangered — seabirds: the African penguin.

Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, their population has declined by over 90% due to overfishing, habitat loss, and human disturbance. The species now teeters on the edge of extinction.

To unpack this urgent crisis, we’re joined by Andrew De Blocq — respected ornithologist and Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA) — who brings a unique blend of scientific insight and policy perspective. Together, we explore what’s driving the decline, what conservation efforts are currently underway, and what must still be done to save the African penguin before it's too late.

This opening episode sets the tone for BirdTalk: real conversations, critical issues, and a shared love for the birds and conservation.
