Daryl Hall & John Oates: "Maneater" (Drip drip drip)27 Oct 202400:52:09

The spookiest episode of the year arrives with a song John Oates says is about the dangers of New York City. We're not so sure about that, but whether it's a dracula or a city or a person you ought not to date, this song will strike fear into your heart! We walk you through a brief history of Darryl Hall and John Oates, from ducking a shootout in Philadelphia as teenagers to the unfortunate end of their partnership over publishing rights. We also analyse the song and plum the depths of its darkness. Finally, we propose a Hallmark movie that challenges our ability to hold a narrative together. Thank you for joining us!

America: "You Can Do Magic" (We know darn well)20 Oct 202400:58:47

We make some magic for you in this week's episode. Kitch returns for #17 and Frank desperately battles to not only keep his position on the show, but also to argue for the existence of good witches. And we have lots to say and celebrate about America (the band, not the country) and their 1982 hit song.

Christopher Cross: "Ride Like The Wind" (Tents and Fleeing Flamingos)18 Aug 202400:56:22

"Ride Like The Wind" is both yachty and naughty: a smooth song about an outlaw who has escaped hanging for the murder of ten men. In our (limited) knowledge of the so-called genre, we believe this is the only yacht rock song that dares to deal with this subject matter. Truth be told, the song is so enjoyable that it is hard to imagine that it is about anything else but a good time - and what a good time it is to listen to Christopher Cross and Michael Macdonald on backing vocals. We discuss the surprising history of the song, give our in-depth analysis of the lyrics, reflect on the incredible (and hidden) guitar solo, and finally give an alternative vision for a proper music video for the tune.

Matthew Wilder: ”Break My Stride” (A success story)13 Nov 202200:48:08

"Break My Stride" is one of those songs that you heard everywhere in the 80s. It does not often feature on "best of" lists for the decade (even though it should), but it is arguably a song that is most indicative of the time - you would hear this in shopping malls, offices, radio, etc. And then, for a while, it just seemed to disappear. Or so we thought. The song has made its comeback in recent years, but even more satisfying is finding out who Matthew Wilder is and how this song reflects his life. His story is fascinating and we are thrilled to bring you this episode!

Jewel: ”You Were Meant For Me” (Frank feels all of the feels)06 Nov 202200:58:51

This episode found our two co-hosts with different feelings towards this song. To be specific, we had different "feels" from this song. While Bill was able to come around to appreciate the song in the end, Frank gloried in all of what this song has brought to him in his life. So let's break our yolks and make a smiley face and put on our coats in the pouring rain: it's time to feel all the feels of Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me."

The Michael Bolton Paradox: ”Said I Loved You...But I Lied”16 Oct 202200:35:17

Love might indeed be a wonderful thing, but Michael Bolton knows that even that word cannot truly connote how he feels for his significant other. Welcome to The Michael Bolton Paradox: the closer you get to describing the indescribable, the further you get from actually saying what you mean. As Wittgenstein claimed, there is an unbridgeable gap between what can be expressed in language and what can only be expressed in non-verbal ways. "Said I Loved You...But I Lied" isn't just a love song, it's a philosophical treatise.

Juice Newton: ”Queen of Hearts” (Clickety Clack)09 Oct 202200:42:01

There was a time when country was very comfortable near the top of the pop charts, and after 1981, you'd be hard pressed to find country and the pop charts commingling again. "Queen of Hearts" is a perfect example from that era, and it is one of those songs that can lodge right into a young 80s kid's subconcious and then reappear decades later to keep bringing joy. It's a big moment for our podcast: Frank is finally able to say "lover" comfortably and Bill is finally able to describe the "clickity click click clack" that he hears in this tune. *Editor's note: we're pretty sure those are hand-claps, but if Bill and Frank want to call it strumming, so be it.

Roch Voisine: ”I’ll Always Be There” (The Ultimate Canadian Man)18 Sep 202200:44:17

Roch Voisine is a legendary musician who has sold millions of records in Quebec and France. He does not have the same level of popularity in the English-speaking world, but we hope to change that with this episode. "I'll Always Be There" was co-written with David Foster and made its debut in front of Queen Elizabeth II for Canada's 125th anniversary.  Unlike Frank, she did not cry as she listened to it (as far as we know). We are excited to bring this episode to you!

Harry Styles: ”As It Was” (Late Night Sushi at Harry’s House)28 Aug 202200:58:59

This is new for us - we are stepping out of our comfort zone and focusing on a song from this year. To keep us from looking so obviously out of our element, we have brought on a special guest: Ella is a 16-year-old Harry Styles superfan and she was kind enough to join us for this episode. We all go gaga over Harry at various points as we examine three of his songs , Frank tallies points as he tracks Ella's superior analysis over Bill's, and Bill refuses to allow anyone else contribute to his incredible mixtape.

Atlantic Starr: ”Always” (This Out-hallmarks Hallmark)27 Mar 202200:37:58

If there was a template for a wedding song, this would pretty much fill it. Sure, it's pie-eyed and syrupy, but what do you expect? We welcome back Chris Newkirk to give us his feedback (33:52) and he does not disappoint!

Charles & Eddie: ”Would I Lie To You?” (No Good Dirty Doctor!)27 Feb 202200:36:25

We dive deep into one of the greatest duets of the early 90s! "Would I Lie to You?" was more popular in Europe than in North America, but it's power has grown over the last three decades. In this episode, Bill and Frank examine the lyrics closely and can't help but wonder if this is actually a "gaslight anthem" of sorts. Also, Bill's memories of Melrose Place are triggered, which leads to the subtitle "No Good Dirty Doctor!"

Heart: ”These Dreams” (Werewolves in the Mist)13 Feb 202201:04:01

In honour of St. Valentine's Day, we picked a band whose name represents the holiday perfectly. Frank is away running a marathon in Antarctica (!), so we have two special guests to make up for this massive loss: our frequent contributor Dave Kitchen and the famed "Wolfman" from the north, Dave Huizer.

Cathy Dennis: "Too Many Walls" (A Bonkers Great Songwriter)20 Jul 202400:55:50

"Too Many Walls" is a song that was played everywhere in 1991. It may not have soared to the top of the charts (except the Billboard Adult Contemporary), but it had staying power on radio. Bill and Frank learn all about Cathy Dennis in this episode, and we come away with a much deeper appreciation for "one of the most influential people in the music industry." Also, we collaborate together to create our greatest Hallmark movie yet!

Take That: ”Back For Good” (Lipstick marks on coffee cups)06 Feb 202200:52:40

We're going back to 1995 for this gem. Frank recounts how this song pushed him to take a stand and declare his love for ballads. Our visiting Guilt-Free Pleasures scholar Dr. Andrew Pendakis also sends his analysis of the lyrical content of "Back for Good." We also take some time to reflect on the music video and give some general advice on whether this song is a good template for apologizing to your romantic partner.
