The Search for Self, ADHD & Skateboarding | Adam Walker22 Jun 202601:00:46

What if the most important turning point in life is learning to move from autopilot to conscious choice?

In this episode of Beyond Turning Points, Ash Perrow sits down with psychologist, musician, skateboarder and creator of the Breadcrumbs and Alarm Clocks framework, Adam Walker.

Adam shares the turning points that shaped his life, from spending much of infancy in hospital and witnessing his grandfather die suddenly as a child, through to discovering skateboarding, coding and music as powerful pathways to agency, creativity and self-discovery.

Together, Ash and Adam explore sovereignty, nervous systems, parts work, ADHD, creativity, parenting and the difference between living on autopilot and consciously choosing your path.

At the heart of the conversation is a simple but profound question:

How do we move from autopilot into sovereignty?

In this episode we explore
  • The early experiences that shaped Adam’s nervous system
  • Witnessing his grandfather’s death at three years old
  • Discovering skateboarding, coding and music as pathways to growth
  • What sovereignty really means
  • Moving beyond autopilot
  • Internal Family Systems and parts work
  • Why anxiety is often multiple signals happening at once
  • Adam’s research exploring skateboarding and ADHD
  • Creativity, pattern recognition and nervous system regulation
  • Why creative practices can support children with ADHD

True Knowledge & Listening to Country with Kyran O’Donnell25 May 202601:05:04

Kyran O’Donnell is a proud Barkindji man with a powerful and deeply human story.

Many people know Kyran through  The Brother Boys where humour, brotherhood and positivity have helped him build a community of millions online.

But beneath the comedy is a much deeper journey.

In this episode of Beyond Turning Points, Kyran speaks openly about being removed from family as a child, violence, resilience, identity, survival and the moment he began reconnecting to country and to himself.

What unfolds is not just a conversation about Indigenous Australia.

It becomes a conversation about listening.

Listening to country.

Listening to yourself.

Listening beyond the noise of modern life.

At one point, Kyran shares:

“I thought I knew who I was until I started listening again.”

Together, Ash and Kyran explore:

  • Barkindji country and the significance of the Darling River
  • Growing up during the 90s and early 2000s in Australia
  • Being removed from his family
  • Colonisation and the disconnection many people experience from themselves and the land
  • Violence, masculinity and the search for identity
  • The warrior spirit within Aboriginal culture
  • Nature, intuition and connection to country
  • Spiritual experiences and inner knowing
  • Why many Australians are beginning to reconnect with country in a deeper way
  • Social media, leadership and using platforms to create unity and understanding

This is a yarn about identity, country, healing and what can happen when people begin listening differently to life.

The 6 Stages of Shedding Identity28 Aug 202500:48:16

In this episode, Ash unpacks The 6 Stages of Shedding Identity – a practical yet soulful process for anyone who feels the pull to evolve, shift, or step more fully into their true self.

Through personal stories and client insights, you’ll discover how ego disguises itself, why letting go feels so hard, why relapse is actually normal, and what it really takes to reach “escape velocity” and live aligned with your heart.

This isn’t about quick fixes or surface-level change. It’s about understanding the deeper process of identity transformation – and learning how to back yourself even when doubt, fear, or old structures try to pull you back.

What You’ll Learn
•Why awareness is the spark that begins every change
•How the ego works subtly to keep you tied to old identities
•The holographic nature of life – why shedding in one area ripples across others
•Why relapse is normal in behaviour change and how to meet it with compassion
•How to listen to your humanness without obeying it
•What it takes to break free and live as your true self

Breaking Free From the Life You Were Taught to Live11 May 202601:10:09
A conversation with Manal Waugh on identity, freedom and the courage to change

There comes a moment where the life that once protected you starts to feel too small.

This week on Beyond Turning Points, Ash sits down with Manal Waugh, author of Lucid Dreams: Waking Up to What You Truly Are, former teacher, creative director and founder of an internationally recognised bridal label featured in Vogue.

What makes Manal’s story interesting is not just the range of worlds she’s moved through, but her understanding of what it takes to outgrow identities that once felt safe.

She grew up in a community where expectations around behaviour, belonging and who you could be were deeply ingrained into the culture. Later, even through successful careers and creative pursuits, she kept encountering the same deeper feeling:

“There has to be more to life than this.”

In this conversation, Ash and Manal explore what happens when the version of you that once helped you belong, succeed or stay safe begins to feel exhausting to maintain.

Together, they speak about:

  • growing up inside strong cultural expectations
  • leaving teaching after deep misalignment with the system
  • building a successful fashion brand without formal training
  • identity as something we can outgrow
  • why freedom can feel confronting
  • inherited templates around who we’re supposed to be
  • creativity, ego and awakening
  • the tension between safety and aliveness

At one point in the episode, Manal says:

“Freedom feels terrifying because it asks you to let go of the version of yourself that once kept you safe.”

This conversation is thoughtful, honest, funny in parts and deeply human. It’s for anyone who has ever felt the tension between the life they’ve built and the life quietly trying to emerge underneath it.

Drawing from personal stories, psychological insight, and spiritual wisdom, you’ll learn how to reframe progress, reshape your inner dialogue, and honour your unique rhythm. Ash also shares a touching story about love, space, and rediscovering balance - along with how challenge and support work hand-in-hand.

Whether you’re a coach, artist, healer or heart-led entrepreneur, this episode will remind you of your strength, your mission and your very human nature.

🧭 What You’ll Learn

  • Why process over outcome boosts dopamine and motivation
  • How to transform your inner critic from handbrake to ally
  • Why space is productive (and how to create it)
  • The surprising benefits of embracing challenge
  • The story of The Man Who Planted Trees - and how it applies to you
  • How to keep going even when things feel hard or uncertain

🔑 The 4 Keys to Consistency

  1. Progress – Focus on the process, not the results

Why Leadership Feels So Hard (The Shadow Very Few Talk About)04 May 202600:27:09

The Four Stages of Heart-Led Leadership and the Hidden Patterns Behind Burnout, Self-Doubt and Growth

Why does leadership feel harder the moment you start doing it for real?

In this episode, you’ll discover:
  • The Four Stages of Heart-Led Leadership and how they actually play out
  • Why 40–50% of new leaders struggle early
  • The hidden shadow patterns that lead to burnout, doubt, and withdrawal
  • How to identify which stage you’re currently in
  • Why returning to earlier stages is recalibration, not failure
Episode Overview

In this episode of Beyond Turning Points, Ash Perrow breaks down a practical framework for understanding what it really means to lead from the heart.

While heart-led leadership is often idealised, the reality is that it can feel challenging as you grow. This episode explores both the qualities and the shadow aspects of leadership so you can navigate the process with more clarity and sustainability.

The Four Stages of Heart-Led LeadershipSelf Leadership

Self-awareness, inner alignment, emotional presence, and reconnecting to your values and vision.

Resonant Leadership

Natural influence where others feel your leadership before you claim it.

Effortful Leadership

Growth under pressure, where you lead while learning and build capacity in real time.

Natural Leadership

Sustainable leadership with greater ease, trust, and systems that support your growth.

Key Insights
  • Leadership is non-linear and dynamic
  • Each stage has both strengths and shadow aspects
  • Burnout often reflects a lack of support, not a lack of capability
  • Returning to earlier stages is recalibration, not failure
  • You are expanding your capacity to lead, not becoming a leader

The 'Canopy Effect': Why People Pull Back From Being Seen27 Apr 202600:13:05

The more visible you become, the more exposed you can feel.

There’s a moment when you feel called to be seen… and something pulls you back.

Why does that happen?

In this solo episode of Beyond Turning Points, Ash Perrow explores the tension between leading from your heart and the deep, primal need to belong.

If you’ve ever started showing up more… only to hesitate, overthink, or retreat after criticism, self-doubt, or fear of being judged arises, this conversation will help you understand what’s really happening beneath the surface... and how to move through it with strength.

In this episode:

  • Why your nervous system prioritises belonging over visibility
  • The real reason criticism can stop your momentum
  • The difference between sensitivity and taking things personally
  • How criticism can guide you back to your inner power
  • A simple daily practice to rebuild self-trust

Everything comes back to this:

Your inner power isn’t defined by what others think.
It’s revealed by how you respond.

Becoming Who You Truly Are - Nicky Convine 16 Mar 202601:09:30
Becoming Who You Truly Are - Nicky Convine

Music, spiritual awakening and the journey of rediscovering who you truly are

What happens when the life you built stops working?

In this conversation with singer songwriter and sound healer Nicky Convine, we explore what it looks like when identity collapses, life shifts direction and music becomes the pathway back to yourself.

In this conversation you’ll discover
  • How losing the identity you built can become the doorway to rediscovering your true self
  • Why voice, music and sound can become powerful tools for healing and transformation
  • How creative expression can reconnect you with purpose, wholeness and inner guidance

Sometimes life reaches a point where the structures we’ve built no longer feel true. The roles, expectations and identities that once gave us direction begin to feel empty or exhausting.

For some people that moment becomes a crisis.

For others it becomes the beginning of awakening.

Nicky shares the journey that led her from seeking validation externally to rediscovering herself through music, voice and inner guidance.

I invited Nicky onto the podcast not only because of her extraordinary voice and creative gifts, but because I’ve had the privilege of witnessing parts of her journey firsthand.

Over the years we’ve written songs together, performed together and shared many adventures as friends. I’ve seen how her relationship with music has evolved into something much deeper than performance.

For Nicky, music became the pathway back to herself.

In this episode we explore
  • The story behind the song I Was Lost and the life changes surrounding it
  • Feeling externally successful while internally unfulfilled
  • The turning point that changed the direction of her life
  • Working with a coach and entering a period of deep inner transformation
  • Music as a lifeline during identity collapse
  • Letting go of external validation and rediscovering authenticity
  • Identity fluidity and the freedom to evolve beyond who you once were
  • Voice and sound as tools for healing and alignment
  • Social media comparison and the trap of upward comparison bias
  • Moving from scarcity and comparison into support and abundance
Moments from the conversation

“What happens when you take everything away… what is left?”

“The voice is your own inbuilt tuning fork.”

“You don’t need to compare yourself to anyone.”

The Courage to Begin Again with MJ08 Mar 202601:12:15

The Courage to Begin Again with MJ

Healing after abuse, spiritual awakening and near-death experiences with the host of The Returned Podcast.

What if the hardest parts of your life were also guiding you toward your purpose?

In this conversation you’ll discover:

• Why healing often begins when we stop running from the past

• How near-death experiences can reshape the way we see life and purpose

• Why building genuine community may be one of the most important things we can do in the modern world

What happens when life breaks you open, and instead of shutting down, you begin to return to yourself?

In this conversation, I’m joined by MJ, host of The Returned Podcast, for a heartfelt exploration of healing, courage, creativity and what it means to keep showing up for the life that’s calling you.

I first met MJ a few weeks ago when I appeared on her podcast. I was immediately struck by the calm, thoughtful way she holds space for deep conversations about spirituality, life experiences and the profound moments that reshape us.

MJ shares openly about:

  • surviving abuse
  • navigating anxiety and panic
  • learning to leave unhealthy relationships
  • the long inner journey of taking off the masks she once needed to survive

We also talk about near-death experiences, intuition, synchronicity, purpose, community and the vulnerable process of creating something meaningful before you feel fully ready.

This is a conversation about trust.

Trusting the timing.

Trusting the path.

Trusting that even after everything, you can still begin again.

In this episode, we explore:

• How courage often begins with simply showing up before you feel ready

• MJ’s journey through childhood abuse, unhealthy relationships and deep inner healing

• The role of intuition, synchronicity and spiritual guidance in shaping a new path

• Why creativity can become a form of meditation and self-return

• The difference between building an audience and building a true community

• How healing unfolds over time through practice, patience and repeated choice

• The spiritual insights that emerged after MJ’s near-death experience

• The surprising ways purpose can appear later in life when we least expect it

MJ brings honesty, courage and deep reflection to this conversation as she shares the experiences that led her to create The Returned Podcast and begin building a community for people exploring spirituality, healing and life beyond the ordinary.

Riding the Rapids of Life with Ryan Gittoes16 Sep 202501:09:48

This episode is very close to my heart.

“If you asked how much connection currency I have in the bank… I’m loaded.”  Ryan

In this episode of Beyond Turning Points, I sit down with one of my dearest friends and creative collaborators Ryan Gittoes. We’ve shared hundreds of adventures, gigs and soul-searching conversations and this episode captures the essence of all of it.

Ryan speaks candidly about a pivotal moment in his early 20s, standing on a job site as a fourth-generation plumber and asking himself:
“Is this why I’m here?”

The answer was no.

We dive into:
 • The leap from plumbing to music and the courage to follow a calling
 • The magic and mayhem of early share house days
 • Building and the imminent closing of his creative studio on Tamborine Mountain
 • His powerful work with people of “unique abilities” and why that language matters
 • Creativity, presence and staying human in an AI-saturated world

Ryan is honest about being in the rapids right now – letting go of something he built with love, facing uncertainty and still choosing to back himself.

This conversation is for the conscious creatives, the empaths and the adventurers who are navigating their own wild waters.

Would love to hear any thoughts or insights in the comments.

Warmly
Ash 💙
