E28. Inside Cystic Fibrosis: Jeremie Saunders on Life, Humor, and Changing the Story03 Feb 202601:00:12

In this episode of Beyond the Wheeze, I’m joined by Jeremy Saunders, Canadian actor, podcaster, and public speaker, to explore what it truly means to live with cystic fibrosis and how he has used storytelling, humor, and vulnerability to break health stigma.

Jeremy shares what day-to-day life with CF looks like, including managing complex treatments, navigating travel, and balancing physical and mental health. We talk about how new medications like Trikafta have changed the landscape of CF care, while also acknowledging the realities that many people still face. Jeremy also discusses his “expiry date” mindset, embracing mortality, and choosing to live fully despite uncertainty.

We dive into the origins and evolution of Sick Boy, the role of humor in serious conversations, and why authentic, sometimes uncomfortable dialogue is essential for building understanding and community. Jeremy also reflects on receiving the Meritorious Service Medal, his work with Breathless, and the projects he continues to pursue to raise awareness and support others living with chronic illness.

This episode offers honest perspective for anyone living with a chronic condition, supporting someone who is, or interested in how storytelling and openness can change the way we talk about health.

E27. From Reaction to Prevention: Using Environmental Data to Improve Respiratory Care with Eric Klos20 Jan 202600:57:54

In this episode of Beyond the Wheeze, I sit down with Eric Closs, Founder and CEO of Daily Breath, to explore the powerful (and often overlooked) relationship between outdoor air quality, environmental exposure, and respiratory health — especially asthma.

Eric explains how environmental conditions like air pollution, pollen, wildfire smoke, temperature shifts, and weather patterns can quietly increase risk, even before symptoms show up. Through Daily Breath, his mission is to help people anticipate and prevent attacks using personalized, real-time environmental data, rather than relying on generalized forecasts or reacting when it’s already too late.

He also shares the “light bulb” moment that sparked the creation of Daily Breath after witnessing his sister’s rheumatoid arthritis flare up due to weather changes. That experience revealed a major gap in modern healthcare: environmental triggers are real, measurable, and highly personal — yet they’re still often ignored in asthma care.

Our conversation goes beyond asthma alone, connecting environmental exposure to broader health outcomes like cardiovascular strain, the impact of cumulative exposure over time, and the need for localized, actionable information that helps people make smarter daily choices.

Rumi and Prince lost their son, Rudhro, to a severe asthma attack at just eight years old. Since that devastating day, they’ve turned their grief into advocacy, building a movement to raise awareness about the seriousness of asthma and improve education and resources for families like theirs. Through the Rudhro Prince Hope Foundation, they are keeping their son’s memory alive and working to ensure other families do not have to face the same heartbreak. You can learn more about their work here: https://www.facebook.com/RudhroPrinceHopeFoundation/

Asthma affects over 4 million people in Canada and claims around 250 lives each year. The heartbreaking truth is that many of these deaths are preventable. That is why conversations like this matter. E15. Optimizing Pediatric Asthma and Respiratory Care with Dr. Paolo Pianosi19 May 202500:59:36

This episode of Beyond the Wheeze is a special one for me. I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Paolo Pianosi, a retired pediatric pulmonologist whose work has made a lasting impact in respiratory care. As a child growing up with severe asthma, I was actually one of Dr. Pianosi’s patients at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. Having the opportunity to reconnect with him years later — this time behind a microphone — made this conversation especially meaningful.

Dr. Pianosi’s career took him from Northern Ontario to Halifax, London, and eventually to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Along the way, he witnessed firsthand how asthma treatment for kids has changed, what’s improved, and where there’s still work to do.

In this conversation, we talk about:

  • How asthma care has evolved over the years
  • Why patient and family education still matters just as much as the medications we prescribe
  • The advances in cystic fibrosis treatment and what that could mean for other respiratory diseases
  • The importance of mentorship and compassion in medicine

Whether you’re a parent caring for a child with asthma, a young healthcare provider working in pediatrics, or someone navigating respiratory care yourself, there’s something in this episode for you.

E2. Navigating COPD with Scott Bailey17 Feb 202500:35:16

In this episode of Beyond the Wheeze, we had the privilege of speaking with Scott Bailey, a dedicated advocate and COPD patient who has turned his personal journey into a mission to raise awareness and support others living with respiratory conditions. Scott’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of community.

Scott opened up about his diagnosis and the impact COPD has had on his daily life. Like many others, he faced challenges in maintaining his routine, but rather than letting the condition define him, he sought ways to take control of his health. He candidly shared the mental and emotional struggles that often accompany chronic illnesses, emphasizing the importance of having a strong support system.

One of the key highlights of our discussion was the Lung Health Foundation’s Fitness for Breath program, which has played a significant role in Scott’s journey. He spoke passionately about how structured exercise, guided by lung health coaches, has helped him maintain mobility and improve his overall well-being. This program, designed specifically for individuals with respiratory conditions, is a testament to how movement and community support can make a real difference in managing lung disease.

Scott also took the time to address common misconceptions about COPD, particularly the stigma surrounding it. Many assume that COPD is solely a smoker’s disease, but as Scott pointed out, numerous factors contribute to its development. He underscored the need for better education, earlier diagnosis, and increased support for those affected by the condition.

Despite the challenges, Scott remains committed to advocating for improved care and resources for people with COPD. His advice to others facing similar struggles? Don’t give up. Seek out community programs, find a support network, and take small, manageable steps to improve your health. His story is a reminder that even in the face of chronic illness, there is hope, and every effort counts.
